As It Happens - Multiple Tactics on an Epic Brown Trout Afternoon

  • An exceptional day of brown trout fly fishing happens when the angler is prepared to take it on, apply a host of tactics, and go at the fish in a manner they will allow. That's exactly what we do in this 4 hr, 1/2 day of fly fishing on a spring creek. The results are rather epic as dry fly and nymph fishing goes off the charts in stunning visuals in a gorgeous location. Brown trout aren't as picky as we're led to believe when you take them on and pay special attention - and that means treating each one as its own project.

    I’m a fly fishing addict and when I’m not fishing I love watching fly fishing UA-cam videos. Seeing new places and great fish is always fun but I rather learn new tactics and set ups for different situations to increase my odds when I’m on the water. Have to hand it to the two of you. Your videos are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of trying to share and teach the rest of us some important intricacies. First rate production quality as well! Only issue I have is serious fish envy, but that just fuels my need to learn more and travel to new places. Thank you for all the great videos. Keep them coming. Sincerely - Jim Jensen (no relation)

    The video is once again superb and the lesson in picking off the smaller, lower positioned first fish and still preserving the opportunity to also get that higher, bigger fish is awesome. The lessons on both increasing the leader/tippet length with 5X or shortening to 2X depending on the situation was terrific. It makes it possible to catch the same big fish in two very different locations. Thanks again.

    Lovely footage! That is indeed a great river, one of our favourites. In fact I had one of my most memorable fishing sessions there a few years back. We were heading to Franz Josef and I asked the missus if we could stop for a couple of hours as it was sunny. I had something like 19 fish to my dry,(not all landed though!) in about three hours. We dream of those days in the middle of Northern Hemisphere gloomy winters...

    Dang! That is my favourite stream I fish every season at least once. Great to see the experts cashing in on the bright conditions. Quite a mixture of fish with long term residents and sea runners. I only catch about 10 % but with the high population it isn’t a big concern and things get casual. A salient reminder that each fish deserves its own plan eh.

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing  3 роки тому

      definitely all that. Those hot little sea runners are neat buggers. They hold on a 1" change of depth of gravel at the mouth and are just a hoot before the kahawai move in :) There are certainly days that they are tougher but when on it's essentially like fishing cutthroat trout over here. Just plain fun. But always a diversity of tactics as it goes from shoulders and dry flies to deep and naked in a hurry. Love that one. We didn't do it on last year's trip - this was from a couple years back and prior that we hadn't done it 5 or 6, crazy as that is.

      @@jensenflyfishing I was there 3 weeks ago a couple days after 150ml of classic west coast wet. It was high and clear and the fish were mostly accessible on the edges and eating dries. The sea runners were deep mid pool and feeding and I had real trouble inducing a take. In the end had to go naked and trust my gut..... needs a lot of work that style!

    Hi to both of you
    I never miss any of your videos........so professionnal in every aspect: scenery, education, choice of music, etc...
    Question: I don't remember seeing one of you wearing waders. Always wet wading........isn't the water temperature sometimes cold enough so you'd have to wear waders ?

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Michel, It's wonderful to hear you're drawn to our content. We appreciate you sharing that and thanks for taking the time to watch it.🙂
      We certainly do wear waders in spring and fall and any winter fishing as those are the times that warrant it for sure. If you look at the "How to Fish Wholly Buggers in Rivers" video along with "How to Fly Fish Cross-river Back Eddies" you'll see Dave's in waders. The reality is that quite a bit of our content is filmed in summer conditions where we rarely do use waders. I guess we can handle a certain amount of cold on our legs and we keep warm with what we wear up top. We have a much easier and more enjoyable time hiking far distances when only wearing wet wading pants.
