Joaquin Phoenix is the latest actor to tackle the role of the Joker in a live-action movie, and there’s a lot of focus being put on how much preparation he put into the role. After the performances by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, there’s a lot of pressure from fans to nail this character. Oh yeah and Jared Leto played him too.
But why exactly do fans put so much pressure on actors who take on the role of the Clown Prince? When did this character become something that we expect actors to go super method on, and lose themselves in the process? It wasn’t always like this -- Cesar Romero didn’t even shave his mustache when he played Joker.
In this video we’re going to take a look at the history of The Joker and how the media crafted a narrative that drove fans to expect a WHOLE LOT from actors stepping into the role of the Joker.

Joker: "Why so serious?"
Screen Rant: Well here is why...
"Why so serious?"
"You wouldn't get it."
His father was a drinker.
jared leto: "but what about me?"
What I really want to know , why isn't there a reboot of clockwork orange
He's super psychotic. Barely coherent.
Heath: “Why so serious?”
Joaquin: “Why is everyone so rude?”
Joaquin's quote is better because it fits better in it's respected movie
No Joke you can’t really compare them cuz they are spoken in very different contexts and both fit into the respective characters in the films
@@vandit1010 yeah you're right
Joaquin joker is pre Heath joker. He transitions to why so serious joker by the end of the movie
CrimsonRedSky why so rudeeee?
I think the issue is that Health Ledger perfectly captured the joker as someone with the ultimate dark twisted sense of humor who thrives on chaos. It's difficult to tap into that. Phoenix does a good job showing how someone could be driven to madness and murder, but I could not imagine the Phoenix joker pulling off any of the heists or things that the Ledger joker does. They are different characters by the same name.
True
Lmao It's Heath not Health
Who knows what Joaquin's Joker might become over 20 years
You can see it towards the end though. He spent his whole life being ignored and questions whether he's even real. When he's in the police car watching all the chaos that is directly caused by him, he's ecstatic. He affected the world in such a huge way, and in the end everybody is looking at him. So, I could see him getting addicted to causing chaos, and thriving on it.
Rachel Rogers heath ledgers joker is just a future version of joaquin phoenixs joker
I think playing the joker is one of the most challenging roles in movie history so far.
Heath and Joaquin did extremly good in their own seperate ways.
And Jack
The original Joker during classic batman , was the best.. the most entertaining one ,the one always laughing and he was actually funny and had a lot of energy in his role , the second best is the Joker was Joaquin Phoenix , it was the most human joker ,and it was a new interesting one version of it . ALl other jokers were terrible. Specially Jack nicholson incredibly over rated actor.
@@technoartfest8708 You, sir, do not know whay you're talking about.

I feel like the role of the joker is a great one to show off your acting abilities. Everyone has their own take and adds something to the character.
Or to kill your acting career.

Phoenix: All I have are negative thoughts

Jack Nicholson: The gangster
Heath Ledger: The anarchist
Joaquin Phoenix: The mirror to society
Jared Leto: The clown
Jared Leto : the fu*kboy
Jared Leto: The Joke
Jared leto: the retard
Jack Nicholson: unparalleled
To me is more like this:
Jack Nicholson : The Histrionic (Jack Napier was the gangster, once he becomes The Joker, he gets rid of the mob, and was no gangster anymore)
Heath Ledger : The fascist terrorist (He talks about chaos and anarchy, but wanted a whole city to do his Will, that´s not Anarchy, those are more the methods of a dictator)
Joaquin Phoenix : The true Nihilistic Anarchist.
Cameron Monaghan : The sociopath (Jerome Valeska) and The Psychopath (Jeremiah Valeska)
Jared Leto: A transgender Catwoman on meth in a weird multiverse.
Willem Dafoe or Jim Carrey as Joker. That’s all I want. I’d even take a Johnny Depp Joker.
Willem Dafoe Joker already happened. But we call him Green Goblin.
Jim Carrey is the riddler though and be was great as that
I would kill for a willem dafoe joker
Willem Dafoe omg I would DEFENITLY watch that!!!
Billy Drago is the other best option
To be fair, i never noticed he had a moustache painted over until you mentioned it.
Thanks for the can't unsee-ness by the BTW
Honestly I feel so bad for Jered Leto, if you see interviews of Leto before he began his role you can tell his idea of joker was definitely what Joaquin Phoenix’s joker ended up being. You could see the sparkle in his eyes as he talked about his role. I genuinely believe he would have been a wonderful joker if they hadn’t made him an e-boy.
Leto's still a ridiculously talented actor. But boy oh boy did the studio take it in the wrong direction. Sure, have him be a crime boss. But... not like that.
He had the look and wardrobe of a mumble rapper, and drove a brightly coloured car with underglow. Why, Warner Brothers? Whose brilliant idea was that?
I think he just wasn’t right for the role :/ He tried at least
I actually like Jared Leto as the joker. But I like the Harley Quinn and joker love story more. They should not cancel Jared Leto's joker yet
@@juliantaffa4089 I think it's also bc the Suicide Squad happens in a different universe for DC comics. They play with that idea in comics. He had a similar look to the comic book version, yes the costume could have been calmed down, but I think it also is a way to see the difference between Jokers and placing him in the Suicide Squad Joker role.
I 110% agree and I've felt that from the start, especially considering how amazing Jared Leto is as an actor, and an artist in general.
The Joker isn’t just a character. He is a mirror to the darkness that lies underneath all humanity. That’s why the smiles and clown like facade is so in contrast to the real world. Greatest villain in literature history.

@@nolimitarmani Hamlet is a role that is considered so hard and intricate that only the most talented actors can take it on. Being able to play Hamlet demonstrates some serious acting skill while flirting with insanity.
@Blackpilled Saint It's the Shakespeare play that Lion King is based off on. It was arguably Shakespeare's best work. It's about a shattered son acting upon the request of his late father to revenge the latter's murder. If you want to watch it, I recommend the David Tennant version. Benedict Cumberbatch has also played Hamlet in a more recent rendering but I haven't seen that one yet (it's on the to-do list).
@321Ian123 i think leo can take on the role. just my thoughts though
puffinsunday muffin Leo would be a great Joker. His style of acting is borderline psychologically thrilling & his improv would suit such a role I think.
Damn the actors meltdown to pretend to be him an not even near the comics a part this
Cameron Monaghan’s performance in Gotham was seriously underrated to me especially for how young he was. He certainly seemed like he could really capture a great joker in the future. It really seemed like he was inspired from ledger’s joker.
Yesss. The only reason he isn’t more well known is because they weren’t given the rights to the joker. But he deserves to be known! Definitely too underrated

Jack Nicholson is the quintessential joker. He mixed in Cagney from White Heat w/ some Romero into his toolkit for the role. I’m always interested to see different interpretations & flowing creativity. I want to have fun. Everyone’s so stuck on this character. Like Joker said “Why so serious?” “This town needs an enima!”
I like Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker, but I think most of the Joker's bring something special to the role.
Heath portrayed the chaotic destructive force of insanity that the Joker can embody.
Jack Nicholson embodied the more classic criminal mastermind Joker
Joaquin Phoenix embodied the more humane side and the fall into Darkness that likely leads to the creation of the Joker persona.
Heath and Joaquin both portray Joker well as the unreliable narrator that likes to make his origin multiple choice as well.
Cameron Monaghan did a great job portraying three versions of the Joker. But he had a lot more screentime to refine the character.
it went from someone who couldn’t shave a mustache for the role to someone losing over 50 pounds for the role
AND someone losing his life to the role.
toe bro did you not even watch the video ?
remember the silly mustache pheonix had in "her"?
I believe he said in an interview that he lost 15 pounds and not 50.
Phoenix said that the 50 pounts thing was a rumor and that he only lost like 20-25 pounds.
Because he is one of the best villains ever created. Extremely complex, highly intelligent, unpredictable, a dark sense of humour, no motive except to cause chaos, fearless and throws in witty lines here and there. Like “if you’re good at something, never do it for free”. Most of us feared and loved him at the same time while growing up. Just imagine trying to play this role and create that feeling in your audience. Most people and villains fear losing something but the joker literally has nothing to loose.
One of the best? He is the best!
Exactly
He IS the best
Doc Ock is the best Villain ever made, Joker is punk.

If I were to rank the actors I would go with
1. Joaquin Phoenix: I know I know Ledger is everyone's favorite but watching the physical brutality Joaquin put himself through when he was preparing is just astonishing, the body language throughout the film is a treat to watch and having him on screen the whole time really helped
2. Heath Ledger: One of the greatest performances in film history, Heath did incredible and nailed the mental side of things where as Joaquin nailed the physical side
3. Jack Nicholson: Brought a proper dark side to the character as well as seriousness which forever shaped the future of the Joker as a film character
4. Mark Hamil: I know he only did voice acting but in terms of an animated Joker no one does it quite like Hamil but I'm also glad it stays as just a vocal preformance because I don't think he would do physically very well for the character
5. Jared Leto: Only thing saving this preformance is the fact that Jared took the role seriously and the movie took the character seriously
6. Cesar Romero: I'm sorry but this preformance was beyond ridiculous and can't be looked at seriously
Even in the intro Joaquin's movie version, we can already feel the weight of Joker's difficulties in life
Zac Efron as Ironman is funny now cus what if I told you one day Edward from Twilight is Batman

Jared leto shouldve kept making music and keep away from things he doesnt know anything about. i wouldn't go to a mechanic if i wanted a cake. His dream of being an actor should've stayed as a dream an nothing else. Now his music AND acting is pathetic. i wouldn't be surprised if he overdosed too...
I liked only one of his tattoos, the hand mouth. It would kind of make sense. The joker is known to put on this smile, look insane to everyone, even though he does have his serious moments they always go back to his insane smile. I'm pretty sure if the Joker got to much into the seriousness he would put the hand over his mouth and try to pretend he's still the same giggling man we all perceive him as.
Jaret leto is good actor in bad writing

Agree. Jared Leto is actually a good actor. Hell the dude even won an oscar already. But when a movie is trash not even the world's best actors could save it.
I defiantly believe that playing the Joker role has to be taken to the upmost extreme, considering the forts that Heath,Leto, and Phoenix put into their characters. Along with this, playing the joker should be a respectable privilege, because it is so iconic and difficult.
Imagine Depp plays this role, and he says: "remember this day when you almost got the Joker"

The joker isn’t a cursed role. It’s an epic role that over-scared the viewers into believing that you can only play one by being one. People need to study the definition of “acting” more.
in the 1950s, everyone wanted to play Othello or Hamlet. Today, it's the Joker.
Right? I always found the stories of Jared Leto’s pranks and antics pathetic. It comes off as performative and totally unnecessary.
It’s called method acting and i can confirm it is… smh at all these kids
Method acting is about channeling.. "Spirits", it's very real and dark, actors after that really either go to therapy for the rest of their lives, or they don't remember who they are, and stay in character off set as well, heath ledger is a perfect example, their are bjnch of videos talking about his METHOD, he locked hilself in a hotel for four months only dleepi'g two hours a day, meditating on very disturbing images, doung a ritual.
It is one of the reasons why Method acting gets criticized and is generally considered unsafe for actors. Most actors do not know how to turn the intent off once they are done working on a production.
rip heath ledger, his most famous line is
*why so serious?*
That line will never be forgotten R.I.P
Cesar Romero didn’t put much into the “Joker” character because it was a campy kids show that didn’t pay the actors hardly anything! The biggest perk of the job was eating at the cafeteria where they might run into somebody who is casting for a movie…..
Heath Ledger... what a legend. His prortrayal of the joker was undoubtedly the best thing ever, and having Joaquin Phoenix's show how the joker became the joker.... WHAT A MASTERPIECE!!

His acting was actually pretty immersive. The outfit was less than ideal for the joker's original and ideal but still not too bad. Don't really get why everyone complains about it. Seemed to fit the theme of suicide squad in my opinion.
Frankly, Jared Leto’s everything was laudable, brilliant.
Amethyst Moonshadow Because the Joker doesn't seem like the person who would go to a tatoo artist and say "hey can you write "Damaged" on my forehead in times new roman or something like that?". I'm an India and lemme tell you, I found atleast 5 critics here borederline bashing the movie with the same ' Glorifaction' excuse. Those idiots were also riding the bandwagon of sjws and were rightly put n place by a local director (whose film was bashed in same way for being too violent barely months ago but still grossed tons of money as the viewers loved it). He called those critics as Parasites who injure movies more than they help. He said that an critic who is far more interested in social chapter of a movie than the 22 different types of Crafts that make a movie, is not a critic.
Steezy Mac totally agree that audience score is a better reflection of movie quality. I usually ignore the critic score when I check Rotten Tomatoes, critics have so much content to evaluate and use to judge a film based on when really all I need to know to decide whether to see it is, “did you enjoy the film, yes or no?”.
Actually, in Europe pretty much every critics loved the movie...
Yeah, the prick who narrated this, was a moron. Besides the fact that even a 2 year old knows leto was a joke.
Most of the bad reviews from both critics and "audience" (i use that term sparingly since a lot of people just listen to what the media says without watching the film and deciding for themselves whether it was bad) come from the media that was branding it with a political affiliation; calling it a movie for "Incels" and "Alt-right" radicals. That is bullshit. I miss the days when movies could make statements or provoke thought without being branded with a political ideology or put with a group of people to be written off. If the movie wasn't boring, provoked thought and was generally well made, then it was a good movie. Critics, audiences and social media personalities are not good sources for whether something is good or bad. The only truly reliable way to know if it is good or bad is to watch it for 15 some odd bucks.
Damn you’re good imma suscribe
When I was a little kid, jacks version of the joker taught me what good acting was. The others brought more depth but the best joker will always be jack....hell Jacks the best in everything he does
Oscar press announcement: Joaquin Phoenix for Joker
Joaquin: One small thing.. when they announce me as the winner..can they introduce me as Joker..
Damn sir . I saw what you did there and i like it 😂
joaqer
Cringe
Kaff231 lmao imagine if he really said that and than they said the award winning actor for the year give it up for Joker playing the Joker
I am pretty sure I would have Run away from the show
Actor loses weight to play role
*he's insane*
Christian Bale in the Mechanic: "hold my diet plan"
I think you mean The Machinist.
What about the boxer ? With mark wahlberg, Christian bale boned himself for that role
It's the Machinist, and his next movie was Batman Begins. Major sudden weight change in this guy's life.
Same for ford vs ferrari
50 cent : hold my effen
Although Romero's Joker was played for 'camp' and usually not taken (very) seriously, he was actually quite remarkable in the context of the TV show. The darkness was usually camouflaged with some over-the-top visual joke... Like when Joker escaped jail by blowing up another inmate with explosives during a baseball game to distract from his being launched over the prison wall to 'freedom'. In the current movies that scene would have been Horrific..! I also think the choice of just painting over his moustache was inspired Badass...
It was also an accurate portrayal of the Joker as he was in the Silver Age.
I just saw Joaquin's Joker. It was interesting to realize at the end, that it was probably meant that everything that happened in the movie, other than the very end, in the hospital, was all in his mind. I got the impression at a certain point, that how it happened was not actually how it did, but then it seemed that it was all just imagination.
Same here!! I wondered if he was actually just insane for real and nothing happened.
Joker: Why so serious?
Also Joker: You wouldn't get it.
Because *That's Life*
There's a Joker in each of us. You just need a little...push.
It only takes one bad day...
I’m the jokah baby
@@_RobBanks you can say that again, pal
I don't want to say it but I can't hold myself... Ok here I go:
Cringe
Kroko Unseen Forces well said ... deep down somewhere (specially heath ledger one)
Leto is probably the only actually insane person to play the joker.
This was interesting, thank you. :)
So what you’re saying is that for Joaquin Phoenix to play the joker it was super easy, barely an inconvenience?
Getting prepared for a role is TIGHT!
@@coffee_junky I'm gonna have to ask you to get waaaay off my back about that
He was a child prodigy actor just like his brother, i´m sure he worked hard but that doesn't mean he´s going to let a role get into his head after finish it
Also for Jack Nicholson
I saw this kind of comment every where in this comment section, is this a reference? I'm new here
"Do you wanna hear another joke?" Became the most scary thing we ever heard in a movie. That scene looks so real, so real that we didn't realize intense and disturbing has become one.
You talking about when he killed muraaay?
*how about another joke murrayy?*
That whole scene from his entrance to the killing was shaking my heart so intense
What really sells the scene for me was the circus-like music
7:56 good way of explaining it nice example 💯
A GREAT FILM TO WATCH to show his versatility!!! IM STILL HERE.
that and Eslk the line are great examples of how Phoenix can TRULY IMMERSE himself into a role and TRULY become that individual!
He and his brother River are 2 of the greatest of all time! (Bless and rest poor River's soul. The night he passed away at the Viper Room.... Flea from RHCP was there and actually rode in the ambulance tot he hospital with River)
I still remember the night that happened! 💔💔💔💔😔😔😔😇😇
*why so serious*
*i use to think my life was a tragedy but now I realize it’s a comedy*
Joaquin and Heath and mark Hamill are my favorite jokers
What about "he's a hunka hunk hunk"?
And dont forget "You ever danced with the devil by the pail moonlight?"
I would also add in "without me you're just a joke, without a punchline!"
And of course "Nice of you to say, Bats, but you of all people should know, there's plenty wrong with me."
"Behind the stern and batarangs you're just a sad little boy in playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy. I'd Laugh if it wasn't so pathetic. Oh what the heck I'll laugh anyway HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
-Mark Hamill as the Joker, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Lies. Cesar Romero is best joker!
Ledger’s Joker walked, so Phoenix’s Joker could run.
I see what you did. Lol.
Nicholson's Joker stood up, so that Ledger's could walk.
Need a flyer next I guess.
But sometimes you gotta run before you can walk🤣-tony stark
Zac Efron as Iron Man in ten years sounds good actually. He really is very physical and is a good actor when given the right role like when he played Ted Bundy.
I never knew Ceasar Romero Joker never shaved his mustache. Learning something new is "super easy, barely an inconvenience"!!!
Jack Nicholson like they said just let himself have fun with the role.
Heath ledger showed his great acting ability.
Jared Leto went a different way to not follow Ledger and got screwed by how much hit the floor.
And Joaquin Phoenix I think had to reel it in a little bit cause I believe he's already a little crazier than the Joker.
Tui khankirpola
Jack nicholas joker was perfect it was the light comedy evil joker it was meant to be heath joker was too dark but played it perfectly and the films were superb leto done ok but the film was shocking!! I've not seen the new one yet but right now for me jack still has the edge
This comment
@@davywelsh5671 To each their own. Nicholson was great in his own way, but Phoenix and Ledger brought it to greatness. Leto was just HUNKA HUNKA
@@headsplayzone3975 Kan? Kotha toh thik bolse
Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, and David Bowie would have been a very interesting joker. Look at the way Joaquin took on the role, he gave us a very real performance on the fact that society can make you go mad and get you to your breaking point.
And Heath Ledger was on a whole other level.
I think what makes joker one of the best characters of all time is that whoever is portraying him, can make him unique. He’s such a flexible character so it’s cool to see how writers and actors will break the boundaries for him. I’d rather see Jared Leto portraying his version of the joker than see him try to copy Heath or anyone else for that matter. The joker is probably one of the most diverse characters in the history of cinema
I agree
Yup. ^.^
To be a good Joker, I feel you need to be a really good comedian. As you said, each actor can make up their own, unique version of Joker simply by playing as themselves. Restricting a comedian to a certain theme doesn't give them much wiggle room creatively, and the more restrictions, the more carbon-copy it's gonna seem.
Agreed
same as a character like Pennywise then
I like "He really enjoyed playing the character and was in good spirits" a lot more than "He went too deep into the character and ODed because he was going insane".
9:53 hahaha you put Romee Strijd in
Its so hard to be the joker. The laugh the behaviour the mannerism the eyes the voice everything.
True. People normally pay good attention to comic book character actors, but joker specifically turns it up a notch. There's so much to process from the character
Especially if you have a low voice
Not exactly, you have to a bit manic
@@haruhisuzumiya6650 and EVERYTHING else.
Heath Ledger is the most iconic joker- even my friends that aren’t huge fans of dc think so. It was honestly tragic when he passed away, and I feel like people don’t give him as much credit he deserves, even for his incredible role in “A Knight’s Tale.” We love you Heath, never forgotten. 😔🤍🤍
Heath Ledger’s “ look at me ! “ scene was still the most chilling part from TDK just my opinion
his voice shifted very quickly from a clown voice like to a demonic entity like he was suddenly possessed ... i miss him as the Joker 💔🥺
It's so confusing that Ryan aka Pitch Meeting guy is speaking this :D But great analysis!
I didn't know that Jack Nickelson was ever the joker thats awsome I learned somthing new thanks
