The brevity of these original rules, in comparison with knock-offs like OSE, is astounding to me (to say nothing of the pure, unadulterated nostalgia rush of the Jeff Dee/Erol Otus/Bill Willingham art and the classic TSR font from the early 80's...). Flipping through these old books never fails to spark my imagination.

I’ve always compared Thieve’s Skills to this: Anyone can play hide and seek. But when a thief is involved, it’s like playing hide and seek with Batman.

I prefer to play the original rules. The new games get to crazy sometimes with all the special abilities.

I hear you. They are very different games in that regard.

You should review the B/X Companion. TSR never released the B/X Companion. However there have been a few unofficial ones written.
    I like the B/X Essential.
Works great for Dolmenwood and Midderlands game settings.

Volume sounds fine to me. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge on the matter. It is appreciated.

Thanks, glad you found it useful! This was one of the earliest videos that I produced but it’s consistently one of the most popular. I may give it another go at some point but enough folks have found it useful as is that I can live with it and it’s rough around the edges production.

Very low volume for me. Thanks for the video Hexed Press.

Good video, and great choice in a first video for this channel.
    * One note, your sound output seems to be a bit low. I could not hear it well on my Ipad, even with the volume set to max and with earbuds. I had to switch to computer and still increase the volume settings on my end.
Good luck with the channel, subbed and alert for your new content.

I shared your video in a couple RPG vlogger groups. I hope that gets you some subscribers.

Why not use the 2d6 reaction table more? 1d6 is the more arbitrary and the roll against a stat has more problems. It's already set up for some basic mods to be figured in.

I think the guidance in the books themselves is to use whichever resolution system works best for the task at hand so if you want to lean on one method more than another, go for it! (Even if the books themselves didn't think of it, I'd still say go for it!)

Do you have series of B/X videos? Combat perhaps? Thanks.

+mewithoutmae just two but I’m happy to make more! b/x is one of my favorite versions of the game.

@@HexedPress I'm about to run my 5e group through a side campaign with Old School Essentials (OSE) a B/X reproduction by Gavin Norman of Necrotic Gnome and Dolmenwood fame. The hope is to convert my main 5e campaign to BEMCI. I ordered the Rules Cyclopedia, bought the OSE Kickstart and all the BECMI PDFs. I'm excited to run BX but can't find alot of BX videos on the "How To". Thanks! Do you have a discord or are you on mewe?

I’m technically on mewe but I’ve been absentee from it. I need to get back on there. I don’t have my own dedicated discord but I’m on a couple, Tenkar’s Tavern for one. I have some of the OSE material,it’s good stuff. I prefer b/x to BECMI myself but it’s also a very good system. The RC is a great book. Good luck with your game- I love OSR D&D s, fingers crossed, that your group takes to it.

I think I'm on tenkars discord as well. Do you mean red box vs the whole BECMI series? Mewe is great! I'm on there every now and again.

Audio is so low that I can barely hear what toy have to say with my phone on max volume.
Concerning the clarity, maybe it's better than the previous D&D rules, but the layout is a disaster after returning from more modern games. Why are Saves not with the classes? Why is encumbrance values of Items not in the item section? Etc. Great system, though. Old School Essentials is a great update.

Thanks for the feedback. This is one of my oldest videos and it shows in all facets. I should probably record an update now that I'm better equipped and setup than I was at the time!

Sorry for that! The quality of some of these early videos (heck, even newer one!) can be a bit rough. It’s probably getting to time to make updated versions of these.

Funny how moronic people are when it comes to THAC0. All you do is subtract the AC you're trying to hit from your THAC0. If your THAC0 is 10 and you need to hit AC 6, then 10-6=4. Not exactly difficult....

    • @HexedPress
      @HexedPress  4 роки тому +4

No it’s not. I think it got a bad rap and it just became this thing to pick on.

I still prefer the old THAC0 system.
