A few years ago, I sold a rare promo pressing of an Iggy Pop album to Henry. It was such a cool moment to see the name Henry Garfield pop up on the mailing label to an address in LA, and realize who the buyer was.
I've just spent the last 21mins the most entertained I've ever been while on UA-cam or pretty much anywhere in life. Henry Rollins is always amazing and ever entertaining in all that he does, but to hear him telling his story of his quest to annihilate Iggy Pop (who is the ruler of the universe in my eyes) was GOLD. I've never laughed so hard at Henry and his antics. And his impersonation of Iggy on stage was spot on! I'm absolutely certain my future holds for me another viewing of this video!
I read "the last 21 mins" and heard myself say "No fkkn way this was, like, 10 mins MAX!" Checked the time stamp THREE times... found this comment so I could say "Holy shit! You're right! How great is it to be so immersed in a story, it felt like time stopped? And I never would've realized it if not for your comment 🤣🤯!"
Thing is, while now in his mid '70s, and although he noticeably doesn't have the stamina that he'd had in his 40s and even 50s, he's still a manic and hyperkinetic dynamo when on-stage
@@shruggzdastr8-facedclown I had the DVD and I would play it on repeat, people started getting pissed because it was always playing in the background if I was around. :D
Henry is so right..... Down On The Street is such an amazingly primitive yet spectacularly beautiful sounding song. I'd pick it as the Stooges best tune.
should have seen the Stooges in the early 70's. i did and it changed my life. i no longer wanted to commit suicide. the stooges saved my life. this is the power that is real Detroit rock. MC5 and Stooges. i am happy now and going to be 70 years young.
There is a video of the concert in Finland. Iggy tells the security to let the people on stage around the 10th minute, when the band plays Passenger riff. Lust for life starts when the stage is already crowded. And the flowers for the Cure show are there. "Iggy Pop Provinsirock Seinäjoki Finland 10 jun 1996". ua-cam.com/video/9GsGuzbnkw0/v-deo.html
this is prime era Rollins spoken word. His shows were so strong between the era of 'The Boxed Life' and 'Think Tank'. I admire his constant adapting (the more politically-focused end-of-Bush-era shows, and then the Obama period), which he kind of had to do. I saw him in a small venue just before the more political talk shows took hold - about 2003/04: it was unforgettable.
This video disappeared from UA-cam a while back and I was quite sad as I regularly watch it 3-4x per year. Thank you SO much for uploading it - such a good story/performance :)
So great! I remember Rollins doing this set when he was on a festival tour in Australia. Iggy and the stooges were on the same bill. This worked as such amazing hype before Iggy.
it must be at 10 years since I first listened to this anecdote... My blurry memory being what it is, I had forgotten how well he told it! A pure pleasure!
Haha I knew it would turn out like this. The problem is that Henry looks at this too much like a man, with that kind of diligence, discipline, commitment to training and explicit expectation you may make a good soldier or serial killer but feral animals don’t think like that, it takes a mentality of truly not giving a fuck about anything but rock n roll and destruction to be a ride or die maniac like Iggy Pop. Sure everyone has to master their art by practicing but you don’t need no regimen if that’s who you are 24/7.
Well, I just watched this again, because this is still one of the greatest displays of a human being saying words for others to enjoy that I have ever seen/heard. I paused the video at 4:05 and listened to the song, Down on the Street, and yeah, it is a great song.
I never got into his band But Pop was a different story. One thing Iggy Pop had the music to back him up. Rollins I can't even name a song But Rollins sure can jack that jaw.
Saw his recent show in Annapolis and he brought it out again. Apparently "Jim" likes to keep Henry at a few arm's length nowadays. If I recall, Iggy Fuckin' Pop, by Rollins' recollection, said "uh, Henry, uh, it's good t'see you and all, but...you're kinda 'a lot' and if you could, y'know, go over to the other side of the room, okay..."
Awesome story. We got an extra encore in Utrecht not long ago. Ig came out and said, "Here's a little extra jam be a use we love you so much" and broke into Down on the Street> Fun House. Soooo good.
@@AnonymousAccount514 Yeah. I actually worked at a club years ago (91/92ish) in Jacksonville, Florida when his spoken word tour came through. I was working, but got to hear most of his set. And of course over the years I’ve listened to random bits and bobs from his spoken word. I also caught Rollins Band opening for Beastie Boys with Cypress Hill in ‘92. I’m not a huge Black Flag/Rollins Band fan but I’m an immense fan of his spoken word/intellect.
Henry autographed a ticket after a Rollins Band performance at First Avenue. He was TIRED, but gratuitous and kind. Excellent ... I wish my Bowie performances are a credit to his brilliance ... The audience is very specific ... so now I leave the car running ... David would smile.
Iam pretty sure I've seen them both twice, Iggy would have been 15yrs apart the 2nd time was when the Stooges had reformed and Iggy had more energy and was just as toned as he had been 15yrs earlier. 🙂

One thing about Henry is how he is always simultaneously effortlessly badass, brilliantly intelligent and adorably nerdy.
You nailed it.
Rollins is just that super intense weirdo kid from study hall, but extremely jacked and with a chip on his shoulder.
With every conformist opinion

‘Iggy, now unencumbered by vocal duties’ 😂😂😂😂😂😂
So accurate to Iggy's performances xD

His Iggy impression is outstanding lmao
I saw Iggy and The Stooges live in about 2010 and Iggy was still an absolute force of nature despite being in his sixties.
While he's slowed-down now that he's in his mid '70s, he still rocks harder than most frontmen a third his age
