I always thought that if Corgan had ended up just being the guitar player, with Chamberlain on drums, BUT with a really good singer, they would have been a ridiculously good band. And I've loved SP since the day Gish came out, but even I gotta skip a bunch of their songs when listening to their albums.
There doesn't seem to be much middle ground when it comes to SP, people either love them or hate them and you almost had to be there (in the 90s) when this dropped to really understand it's magnitude on alternative rock. For me, this album, cover to cover is a masterpiece.
they were just so different from the rest of the crop. 100% agree that you had to experience it back in the day when this album dropped, it was such a refreshing change from all the Nirvanas, Pearl Jams , and STPs of the era.

Hummer is my favorite song off this album. Jimmy is a phenomenal drummer, and he and Billy’s chemistry is something special. All of their early albums are very different from each other, so don’t get too settled into any one style if you plan to go down their rabbit hole.
Facts. It's amazing what a band can do when a drummer and lead guitarist have thst type of chemistry. When Jimmy left, you could hear the change in the band. I don't mind the songs The Pumpkins made without Jimmy, but it wasnt the sound that made me fall in love with them.
One aspect you don't get listening to individual songs only is the album flow. This song is after Soma and the contrast is substantial. Geek USA reinvigorates you from the heavy and burdensome feelings you get while listening to Soma. This album is a masterpiece. Point blank.
Not sure reinvigorates would be my choice. Yes it’s faster than Soma… but it’s one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard… that guitar solo is desperation caught in sound.
@eccehomer8182 invigorating as in energetic. Regardless of emotion behind it, soma is the song version of the end of ABrave New World. Anything with an upbeat tempo is going to untie the noose of that one, regardless of message content or delivery. Imo, of course. Whole album is a banger.
Man, you nailed it! The album concept is so incredibly lost in this generation. I listened to this album a minimum of 300 times and will listen to it at least a hundred more. I think this is my favorite song of theirs all-time.
The Mayonaise drum beat took me forever to figure out when I was in high school. I thought it was so odd to keep time with 4 on the hi-hat pedal. Definitely don't hear that much.
“Siamese Dream” is similar to Alice In Chains’ “Dirt”, in the sense that the sound and songwriting is consistent throughout, and consistently great, at that. There aren’t really any weak tracks on either album. That said, I’d suggest avoiding the other singles on “Siamese Dream”, as I’d say they’re amongst the songs least likely to grab you. “Hummer” could be a good call for the next one you react to.

13:32 yup! The singer (Billy Corgan) had a rough upbringing and was bullied frequently for his birthmark. He was also suffering from suicidal depression before and during the recording process of Siamese Dream.
The Pumpkins have always had a great balance of heavy and softer sounds and I love the meshing of the two. I could recommend just about any song off of the first three albums. Gish is their first album with great songs like Siva, Rhinoceros, Bury Me and Tristessa. The year Mellon Collie came out they also released five singles that had so many great tracks on them. Pretty much fifty songs came out of that era! Thru the Eyes of Ruby would be great as well as Jellybelly. A longer song but one of my favorites would be Porcelina of the Vast Oceans.
Those break downs that fall off the table into another style entirely is an artistic choice. Not many songs do it, but the dynamic is very effective. I like it. This song kicks ass! The Pumpkins are surprisingly heavy enough to hang with big dogs, yet their mellow side is very chill and very moody. They do both equally well and this song shows that.
As a teenager when this came out and grunge and the music of the 90’s was exploding, the Smashing Pumpkins and this album introduced a sound that was completely new. Your description of “fuzzy” is spot on.
I agree with OLLY, Siamese Dream is my nominee for the golden standard of grunge. It's a flawless album, it plays through from first song to last. Amazing accomplishment.
Ryan, that’s my fave song on SD. I broke up with the first girlfriend I ever loved right when this album came out, and for 6 months Soma comforted me. It definitely helped me to get over her. ❤️ Musically, I like how the song builds to a crescendo very similar to Metallica’s song One.
You guys would love their song "Here Is No Why." It's got that magical formula of theirs from their golden era. Soaring melody, beautifully heavy guitar, soft-ish vocals from Billy, and it's less chaotic than this one (though what isn't lol)
This is one of my TOP3 from them, definitely. Highly recommended NOT to listen while driving unless you want to fly off a cliff - that's how crazy this song is!
That comparison of that first slow break to Barry White! That was unexpected lol! It's interesting how you guys got Barry White vibes out of it, that's the magic of music. To my ears at least, The Smashing Pumpkins were basically channeling My Bloody Valentine in every slow dreamy section of this album - the shoegaze influence on this album is significant - and once you hear more shoegaze bands, it can't be unheard.
When I was in elementary school, my mom worked at the school so I would hang out in the minivan after school until my mom was done working. One day, I opened the glovebox and saw a cassette tape with the word “Silverfuck” written on it, which my sister had left there. That song is on this album too. Soma is great as well - I remember listening to it when I worked at a Boy Scout camp and had to stay up all night for the overnights. Geek USA is an aggressive song and so great. Essential album for its time and it still holds up today. Probably my favorite track on it too. Jimmy Chamberlain might be my favorite rock drummer. His skill really shines on this track. He brings the thunder here. Just listen to that energy and intricacy. Relentless.

when I was 5 years old my mom came home from a walk and gave me this CD that she found on the ground. 20+ years later this is still one of my favorite albums of all time, and Smashing Pumpkins is easily in my top 10 bands of all time. like George pointed out, the guitar tone on this album is unmatched and highly regarded as one of the best guitar tones in rock, period. Geek USA is one of SP’s more over the top tracks, but features a lot of the elements that makes them so great and unique: the groovy, riff heavy approach, the dynamics - going from loud and fast to soft and slow, Corgan’s unique vocal style that alternates between a whisper and a yell, the insane drumming from Jimmy, and as mentioned before - the immaculate, fuzzy and distorted guitar tone that covers you like a warm blanket. I can guarantee that George would absolutely love this album. some other essential tracks on this album would include: Hummer (as a lot of other comments mentioned), Quiet, Rocket, Mayonaise…I could list the entire track list. like most of their albums, it has a great mix of heavy rock anthems and softer ballads - and several tracks the do a bit of both. I would also recommend listening to their first album, Gish. Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness is also a great journey of an album, but like y’all mentioned in the Bullet For Butterfly Wings reaction - his voice is quite nasally on a lot of the tracks. it doesn’t bother me but I can see how it could be off-putting to some. keep ‘em coming, boys!
George, it's time my man. Front to back listen of the whole album, it's one of the best of the '90s and the band completely firing on all cylinders. Aside from Tool's Danny Carey, Jimmy Chamberlain is one of the best drummers of the '90s. If I had to pick one more from the album for you guys to listen to, I'd recommend "Rocket". It has another memorable guitar tone throughout the song and rocks hard.
This really interesting actually because this is my favorite pumpkins song but it took me 20 years to get there. On your first listen you’ll gravitate to cherub rock/ today/ disarm. Watching Jimmy play drums to geek USA is what really got me. Like a 10 minute drum solo
Soundtrack of my teenage years. With the possible exception of Metallica, the most important band of my formative years. Billy Corgan is an absolute genius.
I love the slow breakdowns - definitely a Pumpkins signature thing to do. They were influenced alot by rnb and psychedelic rock so it has that element to it. It was also super 90s to have songs with a lot of weird transitions in them.
Geek USA is my favorite song on the album. Not sure why Ryan doesn’t get it. This song is a barn burner. It rips! And that slow Part in the middle is a really nice breather. It just hits hard in a different way. Like slamming on the breaks for a few seconds then revving the engine back up before going into “destroy mode” at the end! That ending riff is a juggernaut!
It's definitely got that "it could go off the rails at any minute" chaotic thing going on and I think that's where it lost him. I bet he gets into it more after another listen though
Ryan has the right to dislike anything he wants, lol. That's the problem with reaction channels. They have to fake liking everything just to get views. I feel bad for Ryan for having to basically apologize for not liking a song.
Chamberlain's drumming in this one is tight and that outro is so heavy and crunchy - great song from an all-time great album... "Mayonaise" is one from SD to check out that never fails to please.

Smashing Pumpkins are an absolute staple of the 90's. They have so many great songs but my favorite is "Tonight, Tonight". Others I love is "Today" and "1979" I hope you guys check it out sometime! Keep up the amazing work!
One of my favorite albums. When I first heard "Today" on MTV, I knew this was a band for me. I like a lot of their stuff, but nothing ever hit as hard for me as the Siamese Dream record, and I think "Today" is still my favorite song of theirs.

You guys should do hummer from this album. To me it's the most underrated song on the album (because I think its the best song). It's just a beautiful, groovy, heavy song that kicks all the ass.
"Disarm" from the same album is the track that even can make people´s opinion/perception of Billy´s voice turn around. Sure, I´m a rocker but it was their big killer ballad that got me hooked in the 90s.
do HUMMER or SOMA next from this same Siamese dream album. people are also going to want thru the eyes of ruby from MCIS as well. also: the fuzzy guitars have a ton of energy in the midrange where vocals generally are. it's kind of a mixing miracle to have an album sound this good considering how much layers this album has. same producer as nirvana nevermind on this album - butch vig 9he also did pumpkins 1st album (before nevermind)
One of the Pumpkin's big things is switching back and forth between super heavy riffs and light/floaty sounds, both between tracks and within tracks. And yeah, there's a lot of repetition of grooves because they're usually going for a sort of trance-like effect. Their big singles tend to be their least hard hitting or energetic stuff, though, so you'll probably need to go for some deeper cuts to find something you'll like. Based on this reaction, the tracks you're both most likely to dig are "Silverfuck" or maybe "Drown", but I'm not sure what other tracks would tick enough boxes (the former has a long & soft middle section and the latter has a long crazy noise ending). I could see you guys liking the textures on a track like "Hummer", but it's probably too slow for your style.
I remember getting this album on cassette tape when I was a teen and just playing it on my Sony Walkman over and over again until the tape unraveled that I had to buy a new one. It was that good! I still have that cassette tape somewhere.
Siamese dream is more than a classic, it's one of the best alternative albums ever and an all time best rock albums. Another masterpiece production by Butch Vig - the other being Nirvana's Nevermind.

Not sure they will like Zero based on the nasally vocals they hated in BWBW. Billy's voice is at it's most nasally on Zero, especially the "emptiness is loneliness" section. Hummer, 1979 and Galapagos great picks!
Been a pumpkins fan since day one, and I’ve only now just realized that that ‘Barry White’ transition all the way to the end of the song is straight out of Prince’s playbook.
I'm surprised you guys haven't checked out "today" yet. That was probably the biggest hit off that album. I'd recommend that one next. I think you guys should stick with Siamese Dream. Their later albums were different. You guys might like 1979 though

Damn, first time listen for me and that was not at all what I expected, didn't know they had tracks like this tbh. The slow section and the outro reminded me quite a lot of Deftones. Good pick for sure

Chino has always stated his influence goes further back to the 80’s and new wave and singers like Morrissey and Dave Gahan.
@@sharinglungs3226 well they didn’t come up at the same time considering the Pumpkins actually started in the 80’s and the year the Deftones had their first album out, Pumpkins were on their third & blowing up. Chino has said this multiple times including a “Chino picks 5 non metal albums for metal heads” list for Revolver where he lists Siamese Dream. Plus it’s pretty obvious just actually listening to the guitars on multiple songs like “Be Quiet and Drive”.
Pumpkins I always found to be a band best when heard from start to end of album.. Individual songs are often so different and varied, they had some of the sodtest sweetest melodies on albums shared with brutal hard fuzzy sounding songs.. theres a few songs I really dont enjoy if I play them on thier own, but by the end of album am perfectly set up to enjoy them.
As SOOOOO many other s have stated, this was an excellent album. Excellent song. I don't care what it is about. Their wall of sound on this album was exceptional.
My favorite SP song! That's saying alot since I've listened to them from the beginning and it's super hard to pick a favorite. The drums just help finish such a great tempo and song altogether.
there's some old live video on YT where they do a few songs back to back, this is one of em and Jimmy is just going off, playing so fast, it's fun seeing the rest of the band try (and succeed) in keeping up. man I love (and miss) 90s rock, there's so many elements to this, but watching that live ver, it's damm near metal

MCIS has that in spades, especially on disc 2. I love the 1979 - Tales Of A Scorched Earth - Thru The Eyes Of Ruby sequence.

The producer, Butch Vig, was known for that wall of distortion by layers dozens of guitars on a track. This album is one of the best examples of it.

Classic album and better than Melon Collie, in my opinion. I love the slow hard breakdown in the middle of the song and it still grabs me today.

like George pointed out, the guitar tone on this album is unmatched and highly regarded as one of the best guitar tones in rock, period. Geek USA is one of SP’s more over the top tracks, but features a lot of the elements that makes them so great and unique: the groovy, riff heavy approach, the dynamics - going from loud and fast to soft and slow, Corgan’s unique vocal style that alternates between a whisper and a yell, the insane drumming from Jimmy, and as mentioned before - the immaculate, fuzzy and distorted guitar tone that covers you like a warm blanket. I can guarantee that George would absolutely love this album. some other essential tracks on this album would include: Hummer (as a lot of other comments mentioned), Quiet, Rocket, Mayonaise…I could list the entire track list. like most of their albums, it has a great mix of heavy rock anthems and softer ballads - and several tracks the do a bit of both.
I would also recommend listening to their first album, Gish. Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness is also a great journey of an album, but like y’all mentioned in the Bullet For Butterfly Wings reaction - his voice is quite nasally on a lot of the tracks. it doesn’t bother me but I can see how it could be off-putting to some.

George, it's time my man. Front to back listen of the whole album, it's one of the best of the '90s and the band completely firing on all cylinders. Aside from Tool's Danny Carey, Jimmy Chamberlain is one of the best drummers of the '90s. If I had to pick one more from the album for you guys to listen to, I'd recommend "Rocket". It has another memorable guitar tone throughout the song and rocks hard.
This really interesting actually because this is my favorite pumpkins song but it took me 20 years to get there. On your first listen you’ll gravitate to cherub rock/ today/ disarm. Watching Jimmy play drums to geek USA is what really got me. Like a 10 minute drum solo

This was a monster of an album when it came out.
I love the slow breakdowns - definitely a Pumpkins signature thing to do. They were influenced alot by rnb and psychedelic rock so it has that element to it. It was also super 90s to have songs with a lot of weird transitions in them.
Geek USA is my favorite song on the album. Not sure why Ryan doesn’t get it. This song is a barn burner. It rips! And that slow Part in the middle is a really nice breather. It just hits hard in a different way. Like slamming on the breaks for a few seconds then revving the engine back up before going into “destroy mode” at the end! That ending riff is a juggernaut!

One of my favorite albums. When I first heard "Today" on MTV, I knew this was a band for me. I like a lot of their stuff, but nothing ever hit as hard for me as the Siamese Dream record, and I think "Today" is still my favorite song of theirs.

You guys should do hummer from this album. To me it's the most underrated song on the album (because I think its the best song). It's just a beautiful, groovy, heavy song that kicks all the ass.
"Disarm" from the same album is the track that even can make people´s opinion/perception of Billy´s voice turn around. Sure, I´m a rocker but it was their big killer ballad that got me hooked in the 90s.

do HUMMER or SOMA next from this same Siamese dream album. people are also going to want thru the eyes of ruby from MCIS as well. also: the fuzzy guitars have a ton of energy in the midrange where vocals generally are. it's kind of a mixing miracle to have an album sound this good considering how much layers this album has. same producer as nirvana nevermind on this album - butch vig 9he also did pumpkins 1st album (before nevermind)
Hummer, Soma and Mayonaise are the best 3 tracks on this album for me
One of the Pumpkin's big things is switching back and forth between super heavy riffs and light/floaty sounds, both between tracks and within tracks. And yeah, there's a lot of repetition of grooves because they're usually going for a sort of trance-like effect. Their big singles tend to be their least hard hitting or energetic stuff, though, so you'll probably need to go for some deeper cuts to find something you'll like.
Based on this reaction, the tracks you're both most likely to dig are "Silverfuck" or maybe "Drown", but I'm not sure what other tracks would tick enough boxes (the former has a long & soft middle section and the latter has a long crazy noise ending). I could see you guys liking the textures on a track like "Hummer", but it's probably too slow for your style.
I remember getting this album on cassette tape when I was a teen and just playing it on my Sony Walkman over and over again until the tape unraveled that I had to buy a new one. It was that good! I still have that cassette tape somewhere.
Siamese dream is more than a classic, it's one of the best alternative albums ever and an all time best rock albums. Another masterpiece production by Butch Vig - the other being Nirvana's Nevermind.

Jimmy Chamberlain is a legit force on the drums. Dude is soooooo smooth! Incredible chops and feel, one of my favorites.
I'm surprised you guys haven't checked out "today" yet. That was probably the biggest hit off that album. I'd recommend that one next. I think you guys should stick with Siamese Dream. Their later albums were different. You guys might like 1979 though

Pumpkins are a prime influence on Deftones. Especially Chino. He even did a guest spot singing a song with them around ‘18.
@@chrisfuentes4482 first I’ve heard of anyone saying pumpkins were an influence on them, let alone a prime one, lol. Considering they both came up at the same time I highly doubt that. Chino has always stated his influence goes further back to the 80’s and new wave and singers like Morrissey and Dave Gahan.

@@sharinglungs3226 well they didn’t come up at the same time considering the Pumpkins actually started in the 80’s and the year the Deftones had their first album out, Pumpkins were on their third & blowing up. Chino has said this multiple times including a “Chino picks 5 non metal albums for metal heads” list for Revolver where he lists Siamese Dream. Plus it’s pretty obvious just actually listening to the guitars on multiple songs like “Be Quiet and Drive”.
I love this album. In the 90s I listened to it nonstop. We’ll still today! Been a fan of SP since 1993! Soma is my favorite off this album!

Pumpkins I always found to be a band best when heard from start to end of album..
Individual songs are often so different and varied, they had some of the sodtest sweetest melodies on albums shared with brutal hard fuzzy sounding songs.. theres a few songs I really dont enjoy if I play them on thier own, but by the end of album am perfectly set up to enjoy them.
That gurn and slow head nod you guys slip into at the end proves you need more Crowbar in your life.

My favorite SP song! That's saying alot since I've listened to them from the beginning and it's super hard to pick a favorite. The drums just help finish such a great tempo and song altogether.

there's some old live video on YT where they do a few songs back to back, this is one of em and Jimmy is just going off, playing so fast, it's fun seeing the rest of the band try (and succeed) in keeping up. man I love (and miss) 90s rock, there's so many elements to this, but watching that live ver, it's damm near metal
