With rock it's not about having a perfect vocalist. It's about having a message, style, or attitude. Perfection in imperfection.

These guys must have watched a lot of manufactured pop/R&B stars. Sure, there is an important place for full range vocal stars, but a lot of us want the original artists that do their own song writing and lyrics. They seem to kind of miss the point at times of being a personal experience over a public performance.

The “garage” sound of these bands was a feature, not a bug… it stems from the punk, diy aspects of ‘alternative’ music at the time, they purposely didn’t want to sound overproduced or over polished. Most iconic rock bands don’t have virtuoso singers, the Stones, Bowie, Rush, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Chilli Peppers, Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, etc… it’s really more about ‘the feel’ of the song vs perfect technique.

  • @texashookem22

Not everyone is trying to sing like Dimash. Just cause it’s not the most “beautiful” by certain world metrics doesn’t mean someone “can’t sing”. I’d rather hear rough vocals with feeling and meaning than empty perfect pitches any day!

One of the best 90s' alternative songs that shows the real 90's 'slacker' culture. When I bought this CD in 1995, I was so hooked- as their music fit so well with the atmosphere at the time (it is so (really) different from when I listen to this in 2023).

Rivers is brilliant. He loved the Beach Boys and stylistically he adopts the nerdy vibe of Brian Wilson and 1960s rock-pop era vocals, but he doesn't copy it because it don't go today (or in 1992), he's adapting it. It's so clever and he uses it for effect and it just makes the tune. You may laugh at it, but it's genius and it grabs you and it's intentional.

At first I was never a huge fan of Weezer, but the more and more I listen to them the more and more I got into them easily. Like you guys were saying, Weezer is a easy flow carefree sort of band and a lot of their music is what they wanted to play. They did what they did which made them who they are. Definitely a great listen and definitely listen to more in the future.
I recommend songs like Beverly hills, a perfect situation, can't stop partying, and probably one of my all-time favorites, the sweater song.

I get the chill Otis Redding vibe, i.e. Sitting at the Dock of the Bay, in terms of the verse parts. But wait till you get to the choruses.

Its fun music, not serious music. Ive seen them twice and they are a lot of fun. And just as you said, they are just having fun and rocking out. The sweater song is another fun one

You say that as they are reviewing a song about alcoholism and the singer having Ptsd about it as a child

My FAVORITE song of the 90s; played it for my HS talent show. 'Blue Album' is amazing and the only album (of theirs) I truly loved.

This song is about the singer finding a beer in the fridge when he was young. After having an alcoholic dad, he was afraid his step-dad was going down the same path. So, the lyrics are about the anxiety and fear he felt.

You nailed it with not take himself too seriously. They never have as far as ive been able to tell. ITs all about good and fun and relatable. IVe always felt i shouldnt like them as much as i should being that I have a deep prog base to my music preference but they are so solid and true. Idk man... gotta love weezer

I can see not liking the vocals during the verses, but I think they're perfect for the chorus. On the whole, standard songwriter-who-can't-sing-so-good vibe.

This song live is fire. Saw them at minute maid park in Houston a while back and not one person in the ball park was not singing this song from the top of their lungs.
Also, do either undone or hash pipe next from weezer.

He may not be able to sing, but he can SANG! His delivery, the vibe he conveys and the emotion he invokes is great. I like how it all tied in at the end for you. This album is 30 years old and still just as good as the first time most of us heard it.

"own who they are and don't take themselves too seriously" Perfect description in my opinion 👍🏾 Also a bias one, this being my favorite Weezer song and a song that's in my top ten all-time
