This is on a 2021 Rebel 500. The concept is very similar on most any bike. Locations of the drain bolt is usually at the lowest part of the oil pan. The oil filter can be in several spots. I will do a cartridge style oil filter change video soon! I hope you all grasp the concept. Great how-to video! A lot cheaper to change the oil yourself rather than having the dealership do it.

I also let the engine run for a minute to heat up the oil before I let it drain.
And I cover everything that comes in contact with oil with aluminium foil.
Anyways - Contemplating on getting a magnetic drain plug? What do you think?

Agreed, I forgot to add that in the video. But ya a magnetic drain bolt would be a great idea, also get one with safety wire holes.

@@motomecha530 Good tip on the safety wire - messing with a motorcycle is too easy unfortunately

Perfect! how often do you recommend changing the oil and oil filter?

Depends on the bike, but no later then 3 k miles. The oil runs through the transmission and clutch in most bikes. As a rule of thumb I change my oil when my shifting isn’t as smooth.

I just bought a 2009 R1200GSA with 50,000 kilometres (I’m in Nova Scotia, Canada). Previous owner used non-synthetic 20w50. Do you recommend I continue with non-synthetic 20w50? I won’t be riding during winter months. Is there a particular brand I should use?

You could ask 100 mechanics and you’ll get 100 different answers. You won’t have a problem sticking to non synthetic oil and as far as brands of oil, everyone swears by something different. Maybe ask the previous owner what they used and stick with that.
