I played every version of every main Nickelodeon Avatar game, from The Last Airbender's GBA port to The Legend of Korra on 3DS, and even the movie games. 16 unique versions in total across 17 years, and all I wanted was one truly good game deserving of the series' quality. I knew the odds, and I'm still disappointed. We're not allowed to have nice things.

Let me tell you a story about the first GBA game from Halfbrick.
The project was of course under a tight schedule and budget, and the team was working hard to get it done. The game was tested throughout development. The boss level with the drill machine in its original incarnation made a 10 year old tester cry with its difficulty. The designer was directed to write the child an apology and make the level easier.
Source: I worked at Halfbrick and am good friends with that designer

If true, very interesting info to hear.
Nice to hear some behind the scenes details, and from one of the only Avatar games actually praised through this whole video.
I guess that just proves that Halfbrick espically during their 2000s years is just pretty quality company for output.
Jetpack Joyride was a lovable piece of me and many other's childhoods. I deeply miss when companies of those types were the focus of mobile games and not the predatory unbalanced gachas and bootleg scams that are typical today.

One of the episodes in season 3 was very obvious about it (at least when it first aired, idk if the blu-ray cleaned it up). First of all, it was a clip show, one that the producers explicitly said was due to budget cuts. But also, at some point in the episode, the person narrating the clip show inserted themself into the climax of Season 2's finale and... well his face was poorly composited on top of the original footage, if I'm being honest.

Avatar as a franchise deserves so much better than the games it has gotten up to this point. I'm still holding out hope given Viacom still being willing to hand out the license even today, but it just feels so unlikely there will ever be a truly great Avatar game.

@@NoahDaArk Back in 2014, Platinum wasn't doing too well. Their games were generally critical successes that didn't sell well like MadWorld, Wonderful 101 and even Bayonetta. Platinum did a trilogy of licensed games with Activision (Korra, Transformers: Devastation and TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan) as a way to bring in additional revenue while Nintendo funded games like Bayonetta 2 and Star Fox Zero and Guard. Now, they're in a much better place with Nier: Automata and Bayonetta 3 both doing extremely well, so they're way less likely to develop licensed games.

To be fair to the Kyoshi story you talk about near the end, that is exactly how the novels start. Kyoshi is an orphan taken in by the people responsible for the Avatar, who is presumed to be Yun because of the cultural Avatar tests (which failed, woo). Yun and Kyoshi are good friends despite the circumstances, so the first act actually has some personal stakes for when Yun is discovered to not be the Avatar, since he will be summarily discarded and Kyoshi will likely never see him again.

@1:19:06 Okay. I have to jump in here as someone who has read both the Kyoshi novels. Those books kick serious ass. But it sounds like the Gatcha game doesn’t even get beyond the set up chapters because once Kyoshi discovers she’s the Avatar and goes over her revenge mission, I was hooked. I don’t want to spoil for people how cool parts of it are. It really needs a good adaptation.

Finally some appreciation for the Platinum Korra game. That always got such an unfair treatment, as if a budget priced cartoon tie-in game was ever meant to be a follow-up to Bayonetta in the first place. But for what it is, it's a solid fun game that delivers on making elemental combat feel great.

I think the best route for an Avatar game is to either feature a new Avatar (or other character) or use one that we don't know much about. That way, they don't run into the issue of trying to awkwardly adapt seasons of television episodes and they can pace you learning the elements to whatever works best for the game.

About the Kyoshi novels, what you describes from Avatar Generations, is basically, how she starts out, basically the traditional way to find an earth Avatar fails, and as such, the friends of the late Avatar Kuruk, who had died young, try some despaired techniques and misidentify the avatar as a boy named Yun, meanwhile one of them adopts Kyoshi, a homeless girl, which leads to this situation. To note here is, this is only the status quo for the first few chapters, once it becomes apparent, that Kyoshi is the real avatar, she basically goes rogue and starts becoming the badass, we know.
Btw, “the Rise of Kyoshi“ is probably the best to come from the avatar universe since at the very least TLOK Book 3, if not ATLA.
Really a recommended read for any fan of the shows.

I think I had just finished playing Wonderful 101 on Wii U at the time, and I was happy to see Platinum's general gameplay design made it way into such a budget game. I remember buying it for a few friends after that, and they all hated it, and refused to see it as more than just a budget cash grab. Aw man, Burning Earth for PS2 gave me one of the unintentionally funniest moments I've ever had playing a game.
There's one level where you need to go in some barrels to sneak past some guards. Basic stuff at the time: you move while a guard is watching you, you fail the level. You stand still, and the guards' amnesia kicks in and they forget where the barrel was five seconds ago. Thing is that if you're playing alone, the other character needs to follow you while in a barrel too, and in a game like this, it wouldn't be fair to have the player fail if the other character was caught, right?
Well, my bro was playing this level. The pathfinding for the other character breaks right as the guard starts turning around. We watch in horror as, while this guy's turning around, the AI character revs up and starts spinning in place like a beyblade. Guard walks over to it, stands in place watching the beyblade barrel for five seconds, then just turns around and walks away.
We couldn't breathe for two minutes.

Man, this series always felt like it could have made for such great video games. Unfortunately, Avatar never really got the chance to be the broader franchise it could have been, really just being two TV series with some tie-in media.
Also the Wii version of the first game (which I played as a kid) does fix the issue of not indicating which direction switches to each character. It's very subtle and easily missed, but they do fix that issue.

Building on to how you mentioned Viacom should just let WB make a LEGO Avatar game, that's not even that far outside the realm of possibility, although it would've made more sense back in the 2000s. Back during Avatar's original run, they actually released at least two LEGO Avatar sets. There was an Air Temple set and a FIre Nation Ship set. I had both of them growing up (RIP my Air Temple set that my brother destroyed and RIP the Fire Nation ship that I could never complete because I was missing a piece). Anyway, clearly they saw some value in a LEGO collab at one point. Maybe when the newmovies/shows come out we could see new sets or a game be released. Avatar as a property has a lot of characters to work with now so it could work really well, especially if they pull in the Korra characters and characters from the new projects.

On the topic of how people started watching Avatar again when it was put on Netflix, it was weird for me because as a kid when I got my Wii for Christmas not only did I get a copy of Avatar into the inferno with it, but all three season box sets of the show on DVD. And then about 2 years before it was put on Netflix, I found the Blu-ray complete series set on Amazon for about $20 and jumped on it as soon as I saw it, I jumped on it so quickly that when I ordered it I was outside of the grocery store I work at pushing shopping carts as I was putting in the order. Main reason I wanted to upgrade from my DVD copies to the Blu-ray was because many many years ago I lost book 3 disc one. So i wanted to have a complete set again. And when i got it i binged the whole thing over the course of a few weeks. Basically the point I'm trying to get at is that I had no clue why everyone started talking about Avatar again when it dropped on Netflix until I found out that it had dropped on Netflix.

Ah, a beloved franchise that hasn’t gotten the backing it needed. I was a college student so excited for Korra!! We did get together to watch it in the dorms, even Saturday morning and Friday nights. Nickelodeon couldn’t stop us! I have the Platinum game and enjoyed it. I’m never letting that hard drive go. And I checked out Generations, but I put too much time into the Star Wars version of that same game that I didn’t want to do it again with this one. Didn’t know it was shutting down, but I hadn’t heard anything about it since the Kyoshi stuff, so that makes sense.
Speaking of Kyoshi, from what I heard it pretty much is the book. I think only 1 or 2 things were off. But the book is great! Yes, Kyoshi was never discovered as the avatar and grew up orphaned on the streets as an awkward girl. She was not liked by the town and had issues earthbending anything small. Meanwhile, Kuruk’s former Team Avatar knew how important the avatar was and eventually found Yun. He knew a pai sho move that Kuruk did, and the world had been without an avatar for 16 years, so fuck it we ride. The book goes on to tell the story of Kyoshi being revealed as the avatar, seeing the giant mess that it causes with the wider political spectrum, questioning what kind of legacy Kyoshi will have as the avatar after St. Yangchen and party-hard Kuruk, and teasing why Kyoshi was never found as an avatar earlier. Generations got some buzz since it gave official appearances to these characters. It’s nice to have an actual face for Kelsang and others. But the books are a good read. I’d recommend.

Nick treated this property so badly, they took freaking forever to even make available the soundtrack for AtLA, as well as a high definition Blu-ray of the series. We had to listen to bootleg soundtracks taken straight from the episodes (still with remnants of the removed sound effects) and upscaled versions of the DVD quality seasons. So stupid. Never mind how they knee caped the then very anticipated first season of Korra, which snowballed into storytelling problems all the way to the end of the series.

The PC Legend of Korra game was actually my first experience with Korra and, in a certain way, Avatar in general. Sure, I knew Avatar The Last Airbender (watched it a little as a kid, I liked it, but I was never able to constantly catch it, so I just got random episodes once in a while that didn't really make sense) and I heard a lot of Korra since one of my friend watched it and was talking about it a lot when it originally aired, but I never took time to really immerse myself in it. I got the game on sale for like $3 (or maybe it was in a Humble Bundle, I don't remember) and that made me interested in the universe, so I watched Avatar in a few days, followed by Legend of Korra (which I still think is better than TLA on some aspects). It's so sad to see such a good series getting destroyed again and again by Nickelodeon for some weird reasons and never getting a trully good game.
(Actually, that's a lie, I played the GBA version of the first game when I discovered emulation, but I didn't care about the story, I don't think I even read anything they were saying, I was like 10)

Better than literally any of the games, or even the comics.

That being said, no great loss that you didn't torture yourself with them, most of them were just. Nothing. Also, thanks for the segment on the korra game, I had never really been interested thanks to the negative press despite being a massive platinum fan, but I might give it a shot through definitely legal means now

It'd be interesting to hear you talk about Peter Jacksons King Kong The Official Game Of The Movie. Specifically the psp version because that one is very much a scaled back version of the console game. It has actual whole levels from the console version but no voice acting, less enemies populating the levels, no NPCs like Ann, Carle, Jimmy or Hayes and the levels are generally more empty. Its pretty sureal to see something so close to the console version. You could also talk about the ds version and any others that might exist.

No no that's a fair shout, I'm disappointed too. The timing of the gacha game's shutdown announcement screwed up the original read & plan here. The plan for the vid was for the newer games to come first, because they'd somehow approved a read where half of it was me tearing into Viacom on their dime for the child-targeted Avatar gacha (despite Viacom also being a longtime partner of theirs). Their approval of that read was _the_ reason I agreed and took this vid from "I'll chip at one game every few months" to "I'll make this now."
When the gacha shutdown was announced _after_ my submission deadline, I had to either default to the boilerplate backup read I'd done, keep it as is and use ad time to eviscerate Viacom for a product they were actively discontinuing, or cancel the spot entirely and get a black mark that'd affect the next several months of unrelated sponsor comms (word gets around). I even tried delaying the prior vid and bumping this one up to change the order around, but no dice. (Also why the last two vids dropped so close to one another.)
TL;DR idea was to use like 60sec of the paid ad time to further critique the gacha game, because somehow I was given the approval. But instead of the mother of all ad reads, timing screwed it up and made a few of us here sad

As someone who has played most of these games out of some desperate hope that someone, anyone would put in some damn effort... It has become quite clear that the only people who EVER put any effort into this IP are the original creators. Not the people making the games, certainly not those involved in the movie, not even Nickelodeon themselves who were sitting an a dammed gold mine and just couldn't see it.
It's time to just let the franchise die. The shows will live on and that's enough.

Surprised there wasn't a mention of the Avatar Secret Scene Creator. It's pretty much one of those "create your own animations" flash games that were in abundance back in the day, but with Avatar characters and backgrounds. Technically not a game, but I vividly remember playing it and seeing ads for it, including the promise that if you make a scene that the creators enjoyed, they would recreate it. I don't quite remember if any of the fan-made scenes got that treatment, but it was a thing. I definitely remember the Quest Creator though - pretty barebones, but I remember playing it quite a bit as a kid, along with a number of the other flash games.

It's so damn tragic we've basically gotten nothing that realizes the absurd amount of phenomanal potential this World and it's Concepts would have in a playable form.
All the forms of Bending as well as all the crazy fantasy creatures and contraptions and etc have perfect potential for gameplay, and a lot of story potential, and there's so many possibilities in terms of story.
Yet this video starts with you stating that you consider only 2 of the 60+ different games good.
That is one of the most tragically painful disgraces of a track record, this series deserves so much better, the fandom deserves better, the employees deserve better.
And with the fact that there have only been 4 Nickelodeon IP Games in the past many years I can consider of any worthwhile quality (The BFBB Remake, Cosmic Shake, and NASB 1+2) and the fact that nearly every single game they liscence being sent underneath Gamemill, the company that made freakin BigRigs ages ago and whipped their employees to absurd extents to crap out Kong 2023 only makes the future still deeply concerning.
Arguably no other IP that has this level of misfortune in Liscene Games.
(Also than Cameo fron Jon was absolutely hysterical)

I am very happy that you gave each game a chance and didnt just call them cheap garbage and moved onto the next game like EVERY other review did of any of the games.
You somehow managed to pickup a 1.00 version of the first game which has alot of unfinished and broken stuff, which kind of suprised me! What ROM on what website were you using? Only French and Dutch copies are known to have 1.00 releases inbetween the finished global version 2.01.
The graphics on the PS2 version are by far the worst and was definitely the wrong choice on your end. Shadows are broken and FPS are halfed compared to the Wii and Xbox version.
The Wii version of the game actually shows which character is on what d-pad direction with a blue arrow next to the characters image. No idea why this isnt in every version.
The games story was actually written by the actual avatar team! And oh boy am I glad. As simple as the plot may have been, I love it!
I've been playing this game for over 11 years and last year is when I figured out where 2 last quests were, which is honestly a plus point for me, since theres just always something new every time I play, rather that be a good or bad thing for anyone that just would play it once.
Its just so super complex for no reason at all and I am in love with it!
The developers were sadly forced to release the game early which got alot of stuff cut like backtracking on the globe in your inventory and multiplayer. This was all confirmed by a developer!
This hurt the game quite alot, especially the balancing like you mentioned. They have a built in level selector that sets your stats and they balanced the game around those pre-set stats. Problem being, you can have around 3x those stats in the last chapter, which is why the final boss is sooo easy, especially with the tornado move.
Sadly all the games that came after (Burning Earth and Into the Inferno) were just following the shows second and third season, crammed into a 2 hour experience.
The first game even teased a continuation at the end!
For The Burning Earth's GBA version, the publisher asked the devs to cut half of the game since the console team ran out of time and had to end it at the drill fight. They were told that last minute and thats why the files arent deleted and still in the game.
I am serious, theres a video about it online from one of the devs talking about it.

The first game… It wasn't perfect, but I didn't mind the mechanical enemies, as well as the main villain. Heck, I even had speculations that she might be the villain in the legend of Korra. Of course I was wrong but still the story wasn't bad and the mechanics of the game was pretty good for most of it. But I will admit that it could've looked better. The second and third game was definitely an improvement but the mechanics changed. The second one seem to have better mechanics than the third though and I didn't mind the first games ability to level up the characters, skills abilities not to mention having certain weapons, but only work for certain characters. It was actually pretty fun, like creating their own special armor. As the game of all most of that went away and they tried to make it simple unfortunately, for the third game, it was a little too simple. I did like the fact that you get to glide, even if it was a mini game just to earn some extra cash, to get all the other items that you need, but one thing all three had in common. They had plenty of content, but not enough of the story, and even though they had some special side missions, or rather the first one did, it at least kept the games. Interesting not to mention the puzzles, and the ability to talk to people of course, that was for the other two games and asked for the legend of korra game it was actually pretty nice and well spot on even though it was based after two, that would lead into book 3 I like the gaming mechanics I like Korra was able to move on her fighting style, and I, especially like the fact that at the beginning, she loses all of her bending abilities and you have to fight without them. And you can still kick some serious serious butt. And I definitely like that they kept the whole certain items give you an extra boost to help you through the game. To be honest what personally got me for all four of these games is that it felt so limited it didn't feel like I was part of the original story at all. The first one was all right. I don't mind them adding a new chapter in the avatar the last Airbender saga, but it just feels like we want to relive everything including the extra stuff they put into it the entire season of avatar, the last Airbender and maybe even Korra's game as well.
Pardon for the mouthful, but bottom line, I guess we all just wanted to relive Aang's adventure with everyone throughout the entire story, as well as Korra's and feel like we might be able to control it maybe make up a few differences if they allowed it or you know be in their shoes basically. That's my take on it.
😅 again sorry for the mouthful that's just on my mind
