man i would love that comic plot as a game where it's remasters and reworks of planets from all the past games. hey the physical copy argument is just "yo burn a disc, it's easy as fuck, and i actually want 2 own my dam games after the servers shut down or i stop paying the sub after i payed 4 the game." props 2 them 4 making a physical copy there and i hope devs don't just toss this aside. digital games only is very anti consumer because u have 2 either use external hard drives or cloud which u pay 4 and those servers die so even if u payed full price it's a glorified rental.
One thing that I will definitely give All 4 One credit for is how I really like all the fun and unique designs for all the enemies and creatures you fight in the game, you really have to give it to Insomniac, they know how to make some really great character designs.
As a huge R&C fan, I can honestly say I really enjoyed All 4 One. A lot. It's not the ideal R&C game but for what it was it's a very enjoyable co-op game. I think I finished it around 4 times already and it's always a blast to play again.
I think it says a lot about Insomniac as a developer that even the "shitty games" in the R&C series still maintain a level of quality and are fun to play. It's a shame most fans never give these games a shred of credit for what they do right, all because of the stigma attached that "These aren't mainline entries, so they're trash." A4O and FFA may have been misteps, but those were still *steps* all the same. Steps towards a better workplace culture at Insomniac and reworking the Ratchet formula to save or at least briefly halt the stagnation of the series. 'Adapt or Die'. Another great video!
33:08 The Golden Bolt: "As most of us grow up, we're naturally going to start moving away from cartoony platformers for a few years if not entirely." Nintendo in the back counting all the money that millions of grown adults have given them to play their cartoony games.
After years of sticking to the same formula for Ratchet, I completely understand and appreciate that insomniac would experiment a bit with franchise, which i honestly wouldn’t mind seeing them attempt again, especially with how big multiplayer centric games have gotten throughout the years.
Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if one of Sony's 10 planned live service games in the next five years is a R&C one; just looking at how heavily they're pushing the PS brand into TV/film/etc., I'd be surprised if there's not another attempt at a proper R&C cartoon, and a free multiplayer game would be just the way to capitalize on those kids that become fans through the show. Don't tell too many of us old-timers, though, I've seen enough 25-30 year olds crying about these games not catering to them already.
@@TheGoldenBolt The whole reason I got back into this series (partly because of TheGamingBritShow video) was because I was burned out on PvP MOBA, FTP etc. It was just so refreshing playing a good solid platformer which doesn't nickle and dime you or ask for an inane amount of time playing the game to remain competitive or even just have fun. Especially with the replayability. A FTP R&C game could be cool but it would be a tragedy if it fell to the same extractive corporate commercialisation (some commercialisation is necessary of course) it satired in the beginning.
I feel like it's best to describe this era as sorta experimental. Like there are some really interesting ideas with these two games, I actually really like the story and character stuff in All 4 One but they also sort of lost a certain charm the previous entries had. Anyways I'm really looking forward to watching this! :D
The ratchet and clank tower defense game needed more work. Wasn't terrible by any means; it was just missing a lot of stuff. No sauce just wet noodle I wanna say the succ gun in all4one was the method of throwing your friend off the cliff. If they bragged too much the next succ shot was "ooopsie I was a little short that time"
I loved Q-force when it came out. I played it for weeks, and had alot of fun online with it. I wouldnt mind them bringing back the tower defense style for a minigame in a future title. They almost did with that defense mission in rift apart for the chef.
Weirdly enough, this game was my introduction to the series. It was an odd place to start but I still enjoyed it for it’s set pieces and overall humor. I was also a kid when I first played it, so a game about a space cat thing with a gun naturally caught my attention.
All 4 One was actually my first game in the series (I'm a younger fan). Looking back it's definitely nowhere near as good as the series' best, but I'll give it credit for getting me interested in these characters and allowing me to enjoy it with my dad.
Oh I forgot you were going to have to cover these games in the retrospective. These games despite their flaws are still pretty fun (especially all 4 one) but this was definitely the most inconsistent era in the series history.
God, I LOVE the running gag of Nathan Hale as "Artist's Rendition of..." Also, weirdly enough, I find that Zurgo's horrible cringey dialog gets BETTER as it ages. He's _supposed_ to be cringey, that's his entire character! It's honestly a treat to see some people's reactions when they see the game's plot nowadays.
Looking back at these games; it definitely felt like the wisest choice to make to strike out into something completely out of the norm for the series in terms of Gameplay, especially after all that crunch and overambition that had led to A Crack In Time's success for many fans and critics. Back in the day, it was thrilling to actually play another multiplayer game in the form of All 4 One and one where the main campaign could be played locally or online mode and the same can be said of Q-Force and it's tower defence online mode. I was all in for these ideas back then, especially as a way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series with new content in the forms of maps, skins, modes and such. My biggest issues with both of these titles however stem primarily from the fact that these games were more so made with multiplayer in mind, meaning that playing these games solo leads to a pretty lacklustre experience which is definitely not a problem if you do have friends to play these games with, but when looking at the other two games with fleshed out multiplayer modes in them, those being the 3rd game and Gladiators; those still ended up being fully enjoyable in the single player experiences which for me personally ranks those games higher up than these ones. Would I consider these some of the worst Ratchet games Insomniac have ever worked on? Personally I'd say yes just because of the issues brought up. Are these games bad though because of the fact that they didn't focus on the narrative of the future series, didn't flesh out the single player experience as much as the multiplayer experience and had a different visual style altogether? Not really, no? Even though I would consider these their worst work with the series, I hold the opinion that Insomniac Games have never made what some might consider "truly bad" Ratchet games, at worst, I'd probably consider these mediocre experiences but even mediocrity can still hold some enjoyment and entertainment value. But bad Ratchet games? I'd say no to that. They wanted to get experimental and explore new ground with the series and with what ideas they came up with here, I'd say it was worth it. Besides, I wouldn't even go as far as to say they're even the worst games of the series if we counted them all in, and I'm not just talking about mobile games either.
With regards to All 4 One, I've always gotten a pseudo-Oddworld vibe from the environmental design and the more ambient soundtrack. Though I suppose hiring then-Oddworld composer Michael Bross would contribute to that. I've seen plenty of vitriol directed specifically toward these games for "setting the tone" for the narrative direction of the franchise going forward. Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I still enjoyed the in-game dialogue in the games that followed this; yes, even the 2016 game. It's like you said with regards to the overall quality of the games; I think some fans vastly oversell the quality of Ratchet narratives. I do feel a bit bad for Michael Bross, though. In interviews with outlets and fan sites like Ratchet Galaxy, you could tell he really had a lot of fun working on the Ratchet series, but nary a month goes by without some part of the fandom trashing his work from All 4 One to the 2016 game.
I actually love Michael Bross stuff and even then I also love the Oddworld games for how they give an excellent atmosphere of dark aura like presence that was excellent in Oddworld Strangers Wrath (one of my favorite soundtracks due to its dark western tone of it) All 4 One to me is an underrated classic that had a track that made me remind myself of The Sorcerer's Apprentice of Fantasia of the 1940s. Its really awesome. I enjoyed Michael Bross and the fans of Ratchet and Clank should give it a second thought. :)
Ratchet and Clank All 4 One is actually the only Ratchet and Clank game I’ve played through! Shocking I know! My brothers and I loved the multiplayer at the time. I loved Clank as a character because I love robots so I always picked him, and when I played the Clank demo for a crack in time, I was really disappointed by his lesser abilities and never moved past All 4 One. Oh yeah, and I just remembered the day I bought the game! I went into GameStop and picked it out, and the guy at the cash register said “just so you know, this one plays really differently to the other Ratchet and Clank games” and me having never played another Ratchet and Clank game just said “yeah that’s fine” lol
FFA is proof that you can add an original idea to a series and make a spin-off special. I hope they one day do Ratchet multiplayer again but I won’t hold my breath. Great vid
FFA was honestly a great game especially in the multiplayer aspect. I spent so many hours grinding multiplayer and I still even have my old username in the leaderboards. I genuinely wish we can see more multiplayer in the future.
I like Q-Force, but I remember there was an issue with difficulty. Particular with the snowstorm temple level. People said it was too difficult in single-player, so the Insomniacs toned it down, whilst also allowing your weapons to level up to level 5 ( it only went to 3 before) and giving you the ability to teleport to your base at any time, making the in-level teleporters irrelevant. The snowstorm level (in particular the base assaults) is now easier than the previous plasma harvester one (co-op's a different story) and that feels off to me.
I needed this video, as someone who's not played All 4 One but actually enjoyed Full Frontal Assault while being a little less enthused with the PS3 era after Deadlocked... Aha... I'm already a niche fan, but still, for the PS2 era fan I am, enough to choke down the HD re-destruction they released just to have a nostalgia trip, FFA actually hit that sweet spot for the short campaign and multiplayer that I missed from Deadlocked and the games before. Again, never played All 4 One, but I'd pick it up now with some friends just for the experience this video has sold on me.
I have so much love for All4One. It shocked me so much to find out that it's generally disliked. I loved the story, upgrading the weapons, unlocking outfits for the characters, collecting things, the level design and the enemies. It was all so cool.
I just love how you pull out my Ratchet and Clank geekiness by diving deep into the franchise lore. If anyone wants detailed value information about this franchise, then your videos is the right place to go to.
I was one of those people who played All 4 One with just my brother on local co-op, and I remember we liked the game enough to want to give it another playthrough with Nefarious and Quark (which we unfortunately never had the time for). Co-op is kinda our thing, so understandably we might have had a better time with it than people who were looking for a 'Ratchet & Clank game with co-op' rather than a co-op game. As for Full Frontal Assault, that was a game I started up with my brother, realized it was co-op, realized it was MOBA-like, and wanted to play through to the end right there and then (I was hugely into Dota 2 at the time). Unfortunately, like in my previous paragraph, we never had the time to get back to it and our PS3 doesn't even work anymore so we couldn't if we wanted to. If I had the chance, this would absolutely be a game I'd want to play more of.
I'm a triplet and a long time fan of R&C (it was the first game I ever bought with my birthday money when I was 5)! These games were amazing for 3 of us that wanted to play R&C on the one PS3 that we had to share. Fans will forever be the blessing and bane of R&C unfortunately
Grew up on ratchet and doing pass backs with my buddy, playing all4one with our girlfriends was a great bonding game and full frontal brought us back to deadlocked co-op. I enjoyed the hell out of both these
I actually really enjoyed the all-4-one game, it was an interesting spin on the series, being a multiplayer co-op game rather than a single player game with multiplayer pushed into it. The game also had a bit of replayability by having a different weapon for all characters, abliet, only one for each. They also had unique dialouge for all the events that occured, giving everyone somehing to say for what’s happening, and they had an interesting focusto only stay on one planet, allowing you to see the many sides of the planet than the series’ usual take to just have one city or valley per planet and then just forget it later. That’s actually something i’ve had a problem with most of the series with, that you have these planets that ratchet needs to get to, but only lands in a single area and then heads off to the next when his objective is complete. And while i’m not asking for no man’s sky ranges of exploritory depth, i just wish that they made more use out of these planets than just presumably having it’s entire population reside in one city. Even rift apart had that problem, too. Sure, it brought back some areas from past games, but while it was interesting to see the pirates cove from ToD again, i wish that planets like had more than one place to go to. A4O actually scratches that itch, if only a little. You got to explore the many different locales of the planet, even riding a ship to it’s moon, and while it’s the only planet that you’re on for the entirety of the game, after the opening level mind you, it was at least something to let you get the feel for the planet’s lore and what is occuring on it. The gameplay was fun, the story was interesting and the mysteries it held were actually pretty good. Is it my favorite ratchet and clank game? No, not really, i still love the first three, with crack in time right behind that, but this is still on the list. Is it my favorite spinoff game? No, i’d actually chalk that up to deadlocked that this. Which is also on the list btw. But, is it my favorite multiplayer RaC game? Well, yeah. Were you expecting me to say no to that, as well? Bottom line, this game is good and i’d play it again, if i could. I suppose i have to talk about FFA/Qforce now aren’t I? Ok, so, all i’m gonna say is that i don’t actually like this game. I know, shocker? But just not the whole thing, just the story. I actually thought it’s gameplay premise was pretty cool and only wish they polished up a few things. The story is my drawing line for why i never want to touch this game ever again. I do love that the game tries to showcase and reference as much in the series as possible, it was the aniversary game, after all. But what i didn’t love what the matter of the main antagonist being some overzealous fan that didn’t like where quark was going in life and decided that he’d show the world just how bad quark is at being a hero. And can i just say that doesn’t this plot feel almost like that song from eminem where he uses the letters from his then deceased stan fan to show how dangerous obsessing over your idol can get. And i know that some there are some really big differences in the two to have people even question my own sanity, but there were the similarities of the fan not getting what he wanted out of his idol that he lost it and went berzerk, that during my time watching this part in the video, i just couldn’t stop thinking on that. And that song is just good in a somber, kinda sad way. But anyways, the story was just a bit too much for me, where i just stopped playing altogether and simply looked up a playthrough to see how it ends. And yeah, that ending didn’t really feel that rewarding either, and i was just watching someone else play. The literal premise being that a fan turned villain to get back at their hero for being a fraud, and now you have to go to the planets to unbreak everything he did to them. Not to mention that our villain constantly keeps using L33T speak, which everyone knows isn’t fun at all outside of a computer, and well as messing with you with outdated memes, which is actually why i stopped playing as reaching a certain point in the game, your ship gets ransacked by the nerd and now plays a neverending loop of the troll song, which never ends, even after returning from a mission. That whole thing was just too much to bear and even though the notorious B.O.L.T. says otherwise, i really just can’t hold a candle to this game like he does, though i won’t try to argue on their preference on the matter and be civil about it. Different strokes for different bolts, you heard it before. So what’s my verdict? Well, to borrow goldie’s way of doing it, i give all-4-one a dented gold bolt. It’s not perfect, but hey, what is. As for FFA, i’m gonna give it the trashy bronze. This game could have the best gameplay and everything, but that storyline will always keep me from coming back. At the very least, they could’ve dialed back the computer lingo and definitely shuold have removed the troll song from the game. God, whoever thought that was funny should get a slap on the wrist of that, and if they still planned on doing that, the least they could’ve done was have it stop after returning from the next mission. That was just really souring the experience.
I played All 4 One back in college while everyone was on campus. It was great. But you didn’t need to remind me about the game pass. Man, what a terrible trend.
@@majinya6199 Sadly it died because the new trend is to just have digital purchases that can't be resold. Even have a PS5 and Xbox Series without disc drives.
@@mjc0961 That wasn't it really, I can't remember if it had started at that point but Microtransactions where the next thing to come after those passes (so even if you bought a game Used they where still making money off you... More so than the game purchase initially) and in terms of first party (which I think only Sony was doing it, I don't remember 360 Exclusives with the passes) PS+ became a requirement so that's how Sony was able to make money and pay for the upkeep of the server's etc. etc. These "Passes" where like a really shitty and not well thought out plan to mitigate some loss, as much as we all hate MTX they are usually unnecessary (and don't give any advantage over others) so thankfully we can let the small group of dumbasses keep the companies happy by spending hundreds on those 🤣
Hilariously, All 4 One was the reason I started playing any of the R&C games and I can't be more glad for it. Still, it makes me grateful that you work on these videos so we can all get a better perspective on what goes on behind the curtain of our favorite games... I only wish more people looked into the production aspect of games as deeply so that there could be a better understanding between the developers and consumers in these days where people start hate campaigns over the way a tree looks.
I've never had a problem with All For One, when it first came out, me and a buddy played it and got to the final level and quit. Then 5 years later me and another bro sat down and played it in the house. I'd go so far as to say I have some of the fondest memories of the entire series in A4O. And the music, even being different, kinda rocks. I love the ambient tones it sets. For me, it didn't use too many heroic sounds, but went another direction. Which is why i think I remember it so well. Plus the theme song is soooo good
The very first time I played FFA/Q-force, I was sort of lukewarm to it, cut to 5 or so years later when I decided to go through all the R&C games 100% again, and I absolutely fell in love with the game, the movement was brisk and responsive, the combat was fun, and augmenting your gunplay by utilising the turrets and defenses was so satisfying for me. I so desperately wish there was more to the single player then just 5 levels; Like maybe more levels, different difficulty options, a challenge mode, or even the ability to have bot opponents in multiplayer (I dont like playing competitive games normally, as I find them stressful) It's a game that left me with an itch that is impossible to scratch, and that makes me sad.
Totally disagree on it bring a blunder😂. Playing this with three friends was an absolute blast. If Mario can have games that deviate from the main series, so can R&C. 😊
I always thought of these games as Insomniac experimenting and having fun doing something else that just wasn't for me. But the lack of an answer to the questions the series had made me ask for the entirety of the PS3 era (where are the Lombax?) definitely annoyed me at the time. And when all my childhood game series were done or no longer what got me into them, Ratchet was the last thing I was still desperate not to "grow out of", and yet I sorta did for a sad reason: I didn't have friends to play with, and these were much less interesting on your own.
All 4 one was my first ratchet and clank game. I still remember trading in a bunch of games and my local game store and getting it really cheap. It even had the holographic front cover so I think that's what really drew my attention. I thought the game was tons of fun and while I did go back to play all the other ratchet and clank games only to realize that they were all better for the most part, I still hold a soft spot for it as it introduced me to the series. I despised full frontal assault however I couldn't even force myself to finish it
To me, Ratchet and Clank's most enjoyable days, were those of Deadlocked and All 4 One. I didn't grow similarly to the franchise that many did, but I can safely say, it's been quite refreshing and intriguing to see how most of these titles aged with time as emulation does help there a good deal (A Crack in Time's not running on my end yet though, oh well). Still, I can see why they got some shoddy reputation (Online Pass, simplistic story, troubled development and the such). Still, I did grow with the series over time and want to explore them further. The combat and setpieces are engaging, but what I think was missing till pre-Rift Apart, was purposeful implementation. Now, I know Tools of Destruction was received well and tried new things, but over time, the cracks (pun intended), began to show both on the devs and their products. In regards to this video though, I can say this. All 4 One was dumb in a lot of parts, but equally engaging and a surprizingly good Co-Op experience, botched by it's faults, release philosophy with the online pass garbage and a lack of meaningful context to dissect in regards to the story scope of the franchise. Still, it's combat, teamwork feel, character interactions (sometimes) and setpieces of just one planet most of the runtime, made it a wonderful experience to me, in contrast to Deadlocked's lack of interesting planets mostly. However, from a replay stance, Deadlocked still is my gold standard as you entailed in its video, in regards to it's difficulty and ways to hook you further if you want to. I think Insomniac did their best at the time for their devs, which is neat no doubt. Still, it didn't have to be so lacking and chaotic with Ratchet and Clank (2016), that game's best things were easily the Pixelizer and Groovitron, if not for me being a sucker for gun porn and variety in my arsenal. Regardless, good job with the video. You've earned my subscription today :).
As a dedicated single player...well, there you go. These were bad games for the sort of thing *I* wanted out of the series. I wanted more levels, more jokes, more time with the duo, and even more fun weapons to play around with. What I got were constrained levels like never before, with one being a literal corridor of enemies that I could in no way influence, and the other open ended, but dull. As such, I rated it lower than the others. I honestly think a lot of people who rated it low were in the same boat. They were catering with these games to other players, players outside the Single Player action gamers they'd been getting, and into the much more crowded 'party game' type of thing. While arguable with All 4 One's campaign, Full Frontal Assault is designed for quick play sessions, and then done. Which means that it runs counter to what some of us enjoyed about the original, referencing the old or not. And no, the jokes weren't as funny in some cases, either because memes, or simply because the games didn't have the time to set them up properly. Worse, a lot of exposition in A4O is given in level, with no subtitles, so I had a hard time making it out, and had to go online later to figure out the specifics of what the bad guy was(Who he was was obvious, what was not), and it also had the problem of the combat being very spammy That works for a group of friends, as you said, but as a loner, it failed hard. And then FFA came out, and not only does it love to difficulty spike with each map, as the enemies get harder and you have to grind a bit to get weapons up to snuff, but then the campaign is a one and done. To replay it you have to completely erase your save, a series first, and thankfully, last to day.
@@557deadpool I mean, even he admitted it, neither of these games are fun on their own, but they were sold with a Single Player component under the expectation that you COULD play them like that. The problem remains, that way to play them is not fun, and the games themselves suck under that light. And that's ignoring that they do have some very...mediocre gameplay at best. While he tries to say it would be fun with friends...well that's true of just about anything. Friends are the fun generators in that case, and the game merely the medium by which it happens. And yeah, if it's not the direction I want the series to head in, I'm going to express it. Turns out, I wasn't alone in that either.
@@SageofStars 1. Complaining about an aspect of the game that wasn't the main focus and saying it's a bad game as a result is just being intellectually dishonest. 2. He says that the games are played best with friends but just because that's true for most games literally means nothing. 3. You being alone in your mid af opinion doesn't really matter especially when the opinions of R&C fans are highly questionable most of the time (some of their complaints being highlighted in the same video).
@@557deadpool 1) It was not an aspect to me though, it was how the game had to be played at the time, and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. 2) That's intellectually dishonest right there, as this actually contradicts the first point you made, as it now says that it doesn't matter how I played the game so long as I didn't enjoy it, I was in the wrong. 3) This has one of the lowest scores of any R&C game, and a very, VERY limited sales record compared to most others. Now, the former can be simply taken as it didn't appeal to the core demographic, but the secondary means it didn't appeal outside of it either. 4) Just because their opinion disagrees with yours, doesn't make anyone opinion invalid so long as they experienced the product as well as they could, and gave them a fair shot. I beat BOTH games, as my above point says. I bought BOTH games, FFA at launch. I gave them a chance, and they did not do it for me. So I rated them as my experience dictated. If they wanted me to experience them in a different way, then they should have done something different. Again, similar to Resident Evil 5 or Dead Space 3, saying the games were designed for Co-Op first and foremost in a series that to that point was single player doesn't engender my love. And heck, RE5 was still a GOOD game, single or co-op play. It was better co-op because the AI was dumptrunks, but it was still an engaging plot with some nice characters...it also had that village segment, but we don't talk about that... Regardless, no, these games are not good just because friends make them so. If I can't play the game to my satisfaction without, well, then it's not good for me. For a series closer to R&C that did it well enough, Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon was the same, and I enjoyed that one far more, both because of the variety of useful abilities, and also because the bad guy was one of 2 in any series that lived up to his hype. Yes, this is going far afield, but I'm pointing out WHY I think the way I do.
@@SageofStars 1. Except it did work 2. Not really but go off. 3. You also forget that both games were barely marketed too which has a massive effect on a game's sales. I know a lot of people that didn't even know the games existed for the longest. 4. No it's been apparent for years now that R&C fanboys make the dumbest complaints and put the series on a higher pedestal than it really deserves just because they're blinded by nostalgia. You didn't play them how they're intended to be played (one of them being pretty goddamn blatant with how it was meant to be played) then bitched when it didn't meet your specific criteria. It's not the game's fault, it's your fault. Dawn of the Dragon was also the easiest and most broken Spyro game in terms of balance which rendered the co-op mechanic useless. And it had one of the worst stories in the franchise that's not A Hero's Tale or Year of the Dragonfly but ok.
I discovered your channel about a week ago cause of your Sly retrospective and I have been marathoning your Ratchet & Clank videos. I love them, and I hope you keep making more. I'm 35 and I have always been a fan of the R&C series. I even like the movie that most people hate with a passion (for reasons I do not understand) and I may have skipped a few games in the series, but I never hated on any of them. I hope you keep making more big videos like this (and take your time so your not crunching) and your making me want a PS5 more then ever so I can FINALLY play the newest R&C game. Subscribed.
It's okay, my crunches are self-imposed because I have a procrastination problem sometimes. I've been focusing all my efforts on squashing that once and for all (or at least mostly...) in 2022, and every week we're getting closer to the light! Here's hoping you can pick up that PS5 soon, that way I don't spoil Rift Apart for you when I get back to it. Much love, my friend!
This very reasonable look at these games makes me happy. I get that people hate changes but I still think that these games receive unreasonable amounts of hate. I played both A4O and FFA/QF co-op a lot with my sister, we had so much fun and made a lot of great memories and we've both been R&C fans since the very first game. Anyway, this was yet another great retrospective from you, I enjoy these a lot! Keep it up.
I remember when All 4 One came out I went over to my best friend's place and were played through the entire game in one weekend. Watching this video reminded me of both him and I using the vacuum gun to launch each other off a cliff and just dropping instead of swinging to the next platform killing us both. Thanks for helping me remember that fun experience.
The weirdestr bit about Full Frontal Assault for me in Italy was that Ratchet's voice actor changed, so now Ratchet is voiced by the same voice actor as Sasuke Uchiha, he just sounds happier and more lighthearted.
Looking back at Rift Apart now, honestly, this game felt absolutely like it belongs in the future saga. Like what Into The Nexus was supposed to be, but couldn't due to technical and time barriers.
I owned A4O but never got to play it more than once with friends. It was brilliant with others to play with, but alone... it just felt... hollow. And that made me sad at the time, but I still find myself remembering it every so often. It definitely didn't deserve the rep that it got.
All for One will always have one of the most underrated stories in the series and the interesting lore found throughout the game. Not to mention the interesting gameplay mechanics AND outstanding level design. It’s a different kind of game and I love it for that. Amazing video Golden Bolt
I find it ironic that Sony didn’t allow “Multiple Organisms”, “Bros b4 Foes” and “4 Play” as titles, but allowed “4 Play” to be the platinum trophy’s name.
Experimenting and being a little off the mark is INFINITELY more preferable than rehashing the same stuff... I wish more people would appreciate that but consoomers and publishers like despise change.
We getting close to the end of this retrospective that’s amazing that your videos amusing me so much in the last year can’t wait for the nexus video. Didn’t reed the comics because I don’t like comics but I’m happy that tj fixman managed to do what he wanted to do with the stories. About the spin-off era (i think it’s called “the ps3 era” in the 15th anniversary book while ToD-ACiT are called “the future era”) I can’t say a lot because they are the least games in the franchise I’ve played i only played the demos of all 4 one back in 2011 and didn’t like it and I remember I waited for the trailer of q-force in gamescom 2012 and i was so disappointed when i see the ugly A4O ratchet & clank models didn’t even touch it until last year. Because rift apart i play the games finally last years and to be honest i think my opinions on A4O change since 2011 and i think this game is alright and fun for local couch multiplayer with friends. About q-force this is the only game in the franchise I’ve never finished because when I started playing it rift apart was 3 days away from releasing and i only managed to play it for 1 and a half hour on my ps3 and after that i drive 45 minutes to a friend store outside of my city to get rift apart early. I maybe have no right to judge q-force but I didn’t like the single player gameplay in my opinion it’s the worst insomniac ratchet game in the franchise. I didn’t tried the multiplayer because my ps3 is modded and I can’t go online (i own the physical copy but i copy the iso from the disc to the hdd) but I heard that the online is really good and it’s so disappointing that’s I can’t try. I got q-force on my ps vita as well got it from the Playstation store because there are no physical copies on vita as much that this game running bad on vita the positive is this game make ratchet the ultimate Playstation franchise along with wipeout because as much as bad the ps vita q-force port is at least it’s a brand new (at the time) ratchet game that’s release on the vita and since the ps2 days we got a brand new ratchet game on every Playstation console and handheld (not even gran turismo got a game on ps vita).
I wasn't expecting All 4 One to be as good as it was. I honestly thought it would be like Crash Twinsanity; a game where the concept looked good, but it's execution was bad. I thought it had a fun story; a group of characters who don't all get along having to work together to survive a dangerous adventure. The co op gameplay was done well, mostly, and there were plenty of funny interactions between the characters. This game is definitely in my top 5 Ratchet and Clank games.
When I first played All 4 One, I had no clue why Ratchet seemed so ... odd in that game. Like, he had less going for his character compared to how lively Quark and Nefarious were. I realize now after the events from A Crack In Time that he was depressed! I had no clue. The PS Now service led me to believe I was playing these games in order, but I think I should have played A Crack In Time and Into the Nexus before this one now. Anyways, I actually really liked All 4 One, even when I played it by myself. It was fun to play as my favourite character, Nefarious, and there was an incredible variety of levels, enemies, and bosses. The story was interesting, as were the character interactions. Good to see that Quark could still be a hero like in Up Your Arsenal, and I enjoyed seeing the softer side of Nefarious--a side of him that I didn't even know he had. The twist villain was also a fun part of the story.
For me, Full Frontal Assault is pretty nostalgic because it was the game that introduced me to the series. It was pretty fun for what it was, and was especially nice I was able to play it with my dad and sister.
I can appreciate what you're saying, the history is interesting and all but at the end of the day these were products they wanted money for and customers are allowed to not like the product for whatever reason they didn't.
Last year I set out to platinum the entire series! It’s now turned into 100%ing them (because ToD doesn’t have trophies, and Crack in Time doesn’t require skill points for platinum) and I’ve been getting getting closer and closer to the spin offs. After watching this video I’m a little excited! I’m going to recruit my two younger brothers (22 and 11) to play All 4 One with me! I played it a bit with my middle brother a few years after it came out, but only for a couple of levels. Im hoping we all have a good time with it!
With the way the story's going, It seems like Ratchet and Rivet are headed to the Lombax dimension for the next game. So here's an idea, Have some spin-offs delving into Lombax society. Have a new, More in-depth FFA style multiplayer game, But it's styled like it's a sport for the Lombaxes. Have a game where a new Lombax character's trying to make a name for themselves in a combat arena, Basically giving us Deadlocked 2, Because I know a *TON* of fans would love to see that. Maybe have a game where you dive through dimensions to find Lombaxes that were left scattered through Dimension during the Fall of Fastoon, That takes on a Roguelike style of game. Like Enter the Gungeon, But with Ratchet and Clank's gameplay and weapons. The Lombaxes are my favourite Alien race in fiction, So I'd love to see the society they built after the Cragmite disaster. If Insomniac is going to answer the questions surrounding the Lombaxes, It doesn't mean that it needs to end there. You have a brand new society to explore, One that us, The fans, Have been wondering about ever since ToD, So explore it.
Don’t know if it’s been talked about here but I honestly would love to see an All 4 One kind of game but with Rivet and Kit in the 3P and 4P slots? Keep it as a smaller game, give it the time modern Insomniac is giving games, and boom, it will be an utter blast with even more detail and polish that I would by the heck out of.
First time I'm commenting before I finish watching one of these retrospective videos but I'm just going to say it now, the multiplayer components in these games were actually pretty enjoyable even if they're just above average co-op games at best. I feel It's the single player experiences which hurt the perception of both games the most which is a shame since I feel there's a lot that went into the competitive and cooperative aspects.
You'll end up hearing this throughout the video too, but I very much agree! I don't personally consider this era a big blunder as much as a necessity at this point in the series, but that's definitely not how most of the core R&C fans feel.
@@TheGoldenBolt I totally agree with you guys! It makes me wonder if we'll see some sort of new multiplayer game at some point due to how popular free to play games and that type of stuff has been lately.
I'll never understand people who complain about spinoffs which are clearly lower budget and also clearly SPINOFFS being different from mainline entries. Like, no shit geniuses, All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault are different from mainline R&C. That's by design - it doesn't make them bad.
Finally got time today to sit back and listen to this I saw the notif and had been waiting for some free time. I look forward to your retrospectives so much, man!
Funny enough, All 4 One is the ONE R+C game I have experience with during the time the series was on the PS3. Played it for about a couple hours at a friend's house back in middle school and had an ok time with it. Was it what long time fans wanted? No. Is it fine in its own right and should be commended (at least somewhat) for trying something new. Yes. I am likely never going to go back to it, not only because I do not own a PS3, but I also do not see much fun in doing so with my one friend who is still somewhat into the series. Seeing the game, at the very least, is somewhat nostalgic for me just due to when I played it. I thank you Mr. Golden Bolt for covering the franchise and this game as, for many of these titles, I likely would have never thought about them again had it not been for your videos. Thank you Mr. Golden Bolt for not only being unafraid to share your opinions on the attitudes of some of the more immature fans of the series, but also for making yet another great god damned video. As always, I am looking forward to whatever is coming next, whenever that may be. I do not mind a wait, something most of your fans seem fine with as well in regards to the many great comments I see with these videos.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Sam! I've got a quick detour left before I finish up the PS3 Ratchets once and for all, but knock on wood I'm hoping to keep the waits between videos shorter throughout 2022. (Really it should've been shorter already, but COVID has a way of stepping in and saying no to plans...so my January schedule got moved back like two weeks, between resting and taking my time getting back into the groove!)
@@TheGoldenBolt No problem sir! I hope some great R+R comes your way. Regardless of how long that takes, I (and many others) do not mind waiting. Be assured that the longest wait between some of your videos does not even come close to the length of time I have had to wait for other content creator videos (which even then, I can tolerate). Not that I know anything about content creation or anything of the like, but just keep goals in check and the ambition manageable and the waits should be fine.
Amazing video as always - I've been loving these retrospectives! Honestly, I think the comic is probably my favourite thing to come out of the Future era; it puts the characters and their relationships at the forefront of the story, and really delves into them in a way that's much deeper than most Ratchet stories. It definitely made me a big fan of Talwyn too!
I really love All 4 one, as its not only the first game that made me play online alongside other R&C fans(i didnt play online back on the ps2 days), but also the story which is something they only managed to do in this game, while i didnt like Full Frontal Assault but i do have some appreciation for this game.
As a creator, there is nothing worse than feeling creatively stagnant. It can really kill your enthusiasm. That is why I hate fanboys that can't allow creators create with a passion. I also hate the fanboy mentality that they were the ones that made the franchise successful. No, the creators made the franchise successful. You just gave them money.
I'm going to say a counterpoint... Success is measured on the backs of people who pay for the game... You can certainly hope it's successful... But one can never be certain.... In the end you are not the measure of a product's success.... It's money that is
When I got PS3 from friend of friend of mine for a month in July 2020, I had time for only 4 main R&C titles. Since, I also wanted to play few different games of different franchises(Killzone 2 and 3, GoW 3 and MGS 4). Even now, when I got my own PS5, I still want to get PS3(No, in my country PSNow does not supported), to replay those listed games on the top, and even to try those experimental R&C games. Oh well... Thank you, Golden Bolt for your another Ultimate R&C Retrospective!
Bravo. Love these games for what they are (All 4 One I especially enjoy in terms of laughs-per-minute) and I dislike that people hate on them so often. Excited for you to get to Into the Nexus!
I never completed All 4 One or Full Frontal Assault back in the day but after watching your video I think I will go back and give them a playthrough. These games are also the last two platinum trophies I need for the series so that would be a plus.
Thanks for your extensive coverage of this series! Love your dedication to cover all aspects. I happened upon your channel as I started my holy pilgrimage through R&C history and I must say that both A4O and FFA are far from the worst games in it. I'd say Quest for Booty is my least favourite closely followed by Size Matters. Always looking forward to your next video 😺
Honestly FFA is one of my favorite non-ps2 Ratchet & Clank, but thats also probably because of my love of the Tower Defence genre as a whole. The fact that I could not only get the gameplay of a ratchet game in a tower defence (and vice versa) made me fall in love with the game. Its a shame that the game was so short (and used the Warmonger as its missile weapon, im so sick of seeing it)
Insomniac Games is crazy. The series has evolved so drastically from 1 to Q Force that it feels like a 20 year span, not a freaking 10th anniversary, lol.
Honestly I wish I had 3 other people to play All 4 One, solo was okay but as you said it’s better with more. Full Frontal Assault / Q-Force I adored for the Tower Defense hybrid & the online multiplayer aspect of it. I remember getting to max rank, meeting friends that I’m still in touch with today because of it, not to mention the free updates with additional maps, & a new mode. I can see why people didn’t like it (mega sorry for people who ONLY played it on the Vita) but would love to know whom else played it.
Ironically it was discovered recently that All 4 One, and Full Frontal Assault are Canon to the original video games, but if you skip them, you wouldn't miss out on the story, so they are both side games, but they also aren't side games.
Recently? Into the nexus made it pretty clear that they are canon to the series, considering the meridian city museum has statues of characters from those 2 games as well. XD
I played both of these recently for the first time as I am a newer fan and your channel is what made make the jump and playthrough the series and I loved full frontal assault
I loved All 4 One. I was younger, but it was fun, and it was actually the 2nd Ratchet & Clank game I've ever played, and it was also the 3rd or 4th Ratchet & Clank game I ever finished. Edit: I already bought Deadlocked, and I could have gotten it free!? NOOOOOOOOO!!
I can always appreciate when devs try to branch out and experiment with something new instead of doing the same thing every single time. Even if those side experiements don't pay off, gotta atleast give them credit for trying something new
My biggest problem with All 4 ONe has always been how insanely easy it is. The older games, on PS2 and PS3, have never been Dark Souls level difficult, but they were challenging. But i never felt challenged at all during All 4 One. Never played it with friends though, so maybe that would change during Co-Op? Don't know why that would increase the difficulty, though.

man i would love that comic plot as a game where it's remasters and reworks of planets from all the past games.
hey the physical copy argument is just "yo burn a disc, it's easy as fuck, and i actually want 2 own my dam games after the servers shut down or i stop paying the sub after i payed 4 the game." props 2 them 4 making a physical copy there and i hope devs don't just toss this aside. digital games only is very anti consumer because u have 2 either use external hard drives or cloud which u pay 4 and those servers die so even if u payed full price it's a glorified rental.

As a huge R&C fan, I can honestly say I really enjoyed All 4 One. A lot. It's not the ideal R&C game but for what it was it's a very enjoyable co-op game. I think I finished it around 4 times already and it's always a blast to play again.
Wish I could enjoy it. Upon revisting, I was really not into All 4 One. Funny enough, I actually really, really enjoyed Full Frontal Assault

@@postproductions2466That's for the inevitable Smash Clone.
I think it says a lot about Insomniac as a developer that even the "shitty games" in the R&C series still maintain a level of quality and are fun to play.
It's a shame most fans never give these games a shred of credit for what they do right, all because of the stigma attached that "These aren't mainline entries, so they're trash."
A4O and FFA may have been misteps, but those were still *steps* all the same. Steps towards a better workplace culture at Insomniac and reworking the Ratchet formula to save or at least briefly halt the stagnation of the series.

His intro music is actually decent. That puts him above 90% of other channels.
@@TheGoldenBolt I’d honestly be cool if that happened.
It would be cool if the next experimental game was good
@@TheGoldenBolt yeah I’d be fine with a multiplayer pvp ratchet game.
No sauce just wet noodle

Same, I never owned a Playstation so seeing All 4 One was my first exposure to the series, and made me look into the history of it.
It was one of the first games i ever played so…
ALL 4 ONE IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE (but i haven't played the other ones unfortunately
Oh I forgot you were going to have to cover these games in the retrospective. These games despite their flaws are still pretty fun (especially all 4 one) but this was definitely the most inconsistent era in the series history.
God, I LOVE the running gag of Nathan Hale as "Artist's Rendition of..."
Also, weirdly enough, I find that Zurgo's horrible cringey dialog gets BETTER as it ages. He's _supposed_ to be cringey, that's his entire character! It's honestly a treat to see some people's reactions when they see the game's plot nowadays.
Z,,
Looking back at these games; it definitely felt like the wisest choice to make to strike out into something completely out of the norm for the series in terms of Gameplay, especially after all that crunch and overambition that had led to A Crack In Time's success for many fans and critics.
Dude, the amount of detail you continue to give in each of your videos is insane. I honestly love the work you do and enjoy listening. Much love bolt!
I actually love Michael Bross stuff and even then I also love the Oddworld games for how they give an excellent atmosphere of dark aura like presence that was excellent in Oddworld Strangers Wrath (one of my favorite soundtracks due to its dark western tone of it)
All 4 One to me is an underrated classic that had a track that made me remind myself of The Sorcerer's Apprentice of Fantasia of the 1940s. Its really awesome.
I enjoyed Michael Bross and the fans of Ratchet and Clank should give it a second thought. :)
One of the things that I dislike about Full Frontal Assault, is that they got the galaxy that Zurgo came from wrong.
He's from Bogon, not Solana.
Well, it's possible that he could've moved from Solana to Bogon to work for Megacorp. I don't remember if that was said to be the case though.
The dark era for Ratchet and Clank fans was the ps4, one reboot in seven years and no remasters.......
Agreed....
All 4 One is legitimately in my top 5 Ratchet and Clank games lol I adore the story, characters and especially the writing
I absolutely adore that game.
Sadly
I was always a Nefarious Guy, guess you could call me a Nefarious Main.
Same I used to just go in ranked and make friends
I like Q-Force, but I remember there was an issue with difficulty. Particular with the snowstorm temple level. People said it was too difficult in single-player, so the Insomniacs toned it down, whilst also allowing your weapons to level up to level 5 ( it only went to 3 before) and giving you the ability to teleport to your base at any time, making the in-level teleporters irrelevant. The snowstorm level (in particular the base assaults) is now easier than the previous plasma harvester one (co-op's a different story) and that feels off to me.
Plays with friends: *All for one*
Plays alone: *One for all*
Well, well, well.
If it isn’t my monthly indulgence of nostalgia

I got mines new and it came with the pass in the case not sure if that is for all copies or only certain ones
@@majinya6199 oh wow yea that's sucky
@@majinya6199 Sadly it died because the new trend is to just have digital purchases that can't be resold. Even have a PS5 and Xbox Series without disc drives.
@@mjc0961 That wasn't it really, I can't remember if it had started at that point but Microtransactions where the next thing to come after those passes (so even if you bought a game Used they where still making money off you... More so than the game purchase initially) and in terms of first party (which I think only Sony was doing it, I don't remember 360 Exclusives with the passes) PS+ became a requirement so that's how Sony was able to make money and pay for the upkeep of the server's etc. etc.
These "Passes" where like a really shitty and not well thought out plan to mitigate some loss, as much as we all hate MTX they are usually unnecessary (and don't give any advantage over others) so thankfully we can let the small group of dumbasses keep the companies happy by spending hundreds on those 🤣
I can definitely understand why they said no to multiple organisms. I mean, nefarious is a playable character.
What about 4 play?
Hilariously, All 4 One was the reason I started playing any of the R&C games and I can't be more glad for it. Still, it makes me grateful that you work on these videos so we can all get a better perspective on what goes on behind the curtain of our favorite games... I only wish more people looked into the production aspect of games as deeply so that there could be a better understanding between the developers and consumers in these days where people start hate campaigns over the way a tree looks.
23:25 "Wallopper style boxing gloves for four man fisting action, don't google that"
man this shit had me dying lmao
I so desperately wish there was more to the single player then just 5 levels; Like maybe more levels, different difficulty options, a challenge mode, or even the ability to have bot opponents in multiplayer (I dont like playing competitive games normally, as I find them stressful)
It's a game that left me with an itch that is impossible to scratch, and that makes me sad.
Honestly I wouldn't consider them spin-offs considering they're also canonical
"the game should only be what i want it to be" headass
Except it did work
R&C: FFA
Ratchet & Clank: Full Fuzzball Alchemist
Thank you for being the voice this series has always needed
Why does that MykonosFan guy keep playing as Qwark
All 4 One is such a huge staple of my childhood. I wish it were ported to current consoles somehow.
“IM A LITTLE TEA POT”
Can't wait for the into the nexus one. Was short but had some of my favorite weapons
You have a brand new society to explore, One that us, The fans, Have been wondering about ever since ToD, So explore it.
how did I not see this video released. you really are in depth and it's incredible to see what you do here.
I feel It's the single player experiences which hurt the perception of both games the most which
is a shame since I feel there's a lot that went into the competitive and cooperative aspects.
@@REDRatchet If they can make a FTP game while also doing the classic satire of commercialisation, that would be, how shall we say, golden?
Every single one of these uploads I look forward to where the teapot line smacks me our of nowhere happens and it always makes me smile ♡
I didn't think I'd squeeze one in this time, I'm not gonna lie, but a lot of this episode just landed perfectly in place!
I'll never understand people who complain about spinoffs which are clearly lower budget and also clearly SPINOFFS being different from mainline entries. Like, no shit geniuses, All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault are different from mainline R&C. That's by design - it doesn't make them bad.

This scene honestly has me dying XD
Finally got time today to sit back and listen to this
I saw the notif and had been waiting for some free time.
The fact that u guys go way deeper then the actual game and tell us what the devs went through and everything is so much more interesting
Damn I need to read this comic!!
@@Tantuhard Highly, highly recommended! It also merges the PS2 and PS3 era worlds/characters together quite well, which is a lot of fun.
I love that I'm watching this strait after release, turning on my ps5 just to watch it.
As someone with no friends, All4One was boarder line unplayable. It’s the only Ratchet and Clank game I never completed.
As someone with no friends, it was so “boarder line” fun that I’m surprised how I’ve managed to play it so much with not a single 2+ player session
another banger. i look forward to these videos so much!
XD
@@michaeldunlap1032 Oh, so the one I saw was made a while ago
@@DemonHunter-yk6xh yeah, into the nexus already confirmed it back in 2013, it's not very recent tbh.
@@michaeldunlap1032 Ah...I see
I played both of these recently for the first time as I am a newer fan and your channel is what made make the jump and playthrough the series and I loved full frontal assault
