Lol. Paused it at Army Painter uniform grey to go find an equivalent Citadel paint. Eventually find dawnstone comparison. Restart video and immediately have the comment 'you could use dawnstone instead'.
You have just become my number one hero. I have just purchased Kill Team and was trying to work out a good collour scheme and how to paint and then boom I saw your video. So a big thank you
Thanks for the great vid. I've only just dived into Warhammer (with Genestealer Cults) and its thanks to folks like you my minis don't look like crap. xD Awesome work.
These Genestealer Cult miniatures are absolutely bonkers. There's so much you can do with them, they're a real blast to paint. Thanks for stopping in! :D
It needn't be complicated! The only trick to this really is the drybrushing, which - with a little bit of practice - becomes just as easy as anything else. :)
It's a really good box! They're awesome miniatures, and the multi-part figures are great for converting stuff. There'll be a box of them in the Kill Team collection, so if you want the scenery as well, you're on to a winner.
Unless I'm very much mistaken, that's one of the Neophytes from Deathwatch Overkill, isn't it? Those guys are the core of my GC army! I love the Neophyte models: the extreme lights and shadows cast by their ridged armour make them so easy to highlight!
It certainly is! I had Overkill miniatures sitting around for a couple years untouched, and when Kill Team came along I knew their time in the sun had come. Most of the autoguns in my team are from Overkill, using the Neophyte Hybrids box to make up any additionals and different weapons. :D
Not sure if you'll see this as it's an old video... but if I wanted a more box art scheme, could I paint the ridged armour black and dry brush them with the blue and grey or do you think that would need to be painted after and drybrushed separately?
I'm actually planning on tackling the GSC 'on the box' with a couple of simple techniques fairly soon. As it happens, I think you'd get a pretty close result using Contrast quite similarly to how I did with the Nighthaunt Gloom. It'd be worth experimenting to see if you'd get the result you like, since you can always fairly easily strip plastic. :)
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thanks so much for replying! Ah awesome, I'll keep an eye out. I have a Start Collecting box and I've just spent far too long on my first 5 Neophytes for something that will get wiped off the table by a stiff breeze. I'll give it a go and let you know if I have any success in the meantime. To confirm, you're suggesting black contrast on the rubber parts before the drybrush right? I can confirm basilicanum grey works wonders on the grey armour from past experience.
I'd be surprised if they hadn't seen how well it worked in Bolt Action and made note of it. In Necromunda you now have alternating actions with Leaders and Champions allowing another nearby gang member to activate with them, much like, "You Men Snap to Action!"
Have you ever tried using painting handles? (I use thread reels myself) I've found they actually help speed up my painting as they are easier to position for those hard to get places.
I've actually got a couple of different handles, and the Citadel one is probably my favourite for how well it fits in my hand. The only problem is how awkward it can be to paint in front of the camera with the way I have to sit behind it; the handle adds just too much and I'm forever trying to figure out which direction I'm holding my hands while peering at the screen. Definitely agree, though!
My phone sits right at the edge of my desk as it is. ;) Unfortunately, there's not much more I can do to make space. It doesn't matter much if I can't use the handle in a video, though, so long as I can use it on my own stuff.
Not a big fan of the colour scheme but I love the video regardless. Solid techniques and really appreciated the easy way to do the light on the armour!
Honestly, I'm still not 100% sold on the colour scheme itself, but as far as fast and easy goes, I couldn't pass it up. I wanted to get a couple of Kill Teams finished before release, so I'm going to stick to this for a couple extra guys and then start thinking on something else to use that Nighthaunt Gloom for. :D
With these guys, I simply painted in the whole goggle area in straight Ulthuan Grey, then filled the 'glasses' with Fuegan Orange shade. Any colour would do fine, though, and you could use a glaze just as easily!
Thanks a lot! All the audio is actually taken straight from my phone - this is a 'cheap as free' kinda setup. Any minor trimming, EQ and gain issues I futz with in Vegas, and it's good to go.
It surprised me when I got started, and was only ever really intended as a stopgap solution. As I got my head around the software to fix up some of the minor issues, though, the outlay on a separate mic and camera became less of a priority. Big win to Huawei phones, I guess! :D
Yeah that's really convenient - I use Corel VideoStudio Ultimate and so far have had little luck with the audio adjustments in it (I don't think they are very good tbh). So to clarify you record yourself on your phone while you are at the painting table, or do you record yourself after the fact and add the VO?
It's all recorded straight from the phone. I'd thought about recording a VO later, but I think it'd lose some of the conversational, unscripted nature that makes it... well, me! I'm fairly brutal with my editing to cut down on waffle, but I find it hard to go back and dub myself.
Thank you kindly. :D I've been asked about them a couple of times, but it's largely down to what I've got in my supply. I'm just a hobbyist, so when there's something specific folks want to see, I've got to head out and buy it. I'll certainly touch on some Infinity stuff eventually, but I doubt it'll look much like their particular style. Their box art seems to use a lot of airbrushing to get that smooth finish, which looks damn good on their miniatures... but I'm gonna get me drybrush. ;D
I understand that not everyone has all the models you want to see painted. Please don’t go out of your way though! Keep up the great work, and nothing wrong with a dry brush haha!!!
Whenever I use Agrax Earthshade I always have the problem of it drying with a gloss. Especially if I am too liberal with it. (I checked that my pot does not say Agrax Gloss). Do you ever have this problem? Great vid! Thanks!!! Army painter Strong Tone does not seem to have this problem.
Yup! Best thing to do after you've given it a shake is to tip the pot upside down and check the bottom. If there's still any visible sediment in there, give it another shake for about thirty seconds and you should be good to go. New pots that haven't got much air in them yet can take a little more time to mix.
2 Question do you put thinner in your paint pots. I noticed you get it straight from the pot. And if so how much thinner do you add to them and what do you use for thinner. Great video! Keep up the good work!
i asked the exact same question once :P i think he said 2-3 drops of lahmian medium. i could be wrong about the medium though, but that's what i use and it works great :) that, along with 2 small metal balls in each pot (ball bearings or something similar) to help mix the paint.
Ordinarily, I usually put a couple drops of Vallejo Thinner into a fresh pot of paint when I first buy it, and one of the little steel agitators. You don't strictly need to do this, but I like the way the ball bearing works the paint up from the inside edges of the pot, too. For thinning paints out, I'll usually have a little water in my brush before pulling paint from the lid - you'll see me working the brush on the palette a little before I put it on a miniature, and that's usually just testing consistency before I lift it up.
I'd probably use it as a highlight on something like Mournfang Brown for leather gear, but you could try doing a couple of coats to get a solid colour and then give it an Agrax Earthshade to give it some depth.
On these guys I think the smallest I went to is a Citadel Medium Layer brush, but you could dip down smaller if you needed to. It's all a matter of what works for you!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio when painting guardsmen faces what brush do you suggest using because I always end up getting a little bit of flesh color on the helmets
I tend to take the paint from my pots with a little bit of water in the brush, and take just a bit each time. I try not to put anything in a pot so that I can rely on each pot to have the same characteristics when I go to buy a new one.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thank you for responding. I am trying to improve my painting skills and the videos you make help alot. I was removing paint from the pot and adding water but ended up wasting some paint. Stupid of me not thinking just to add water via brush before dip. This video will help me grately painting my Genestealer Cult. Thanks again!
I started from Daemonette Hide, then hit it with a Druchii Violet shade and layered back Daemonette Hide. Then I touched the recesses with a little Reikland Fleshshade and highlighted with Slaanesh Grey, if I'm remembering correctly. I might have done the fleshshade last!
The washes can sometimes separate when they're left to sit for a little while. I recommend giving it a good shake for thirty seconds or so and tip the pot upside down so you can see if there's any sediment left on the bottom. If you're still getting a shine after that, try a matt varnish once the miniature's finished to seal it and smooth out that effect.

Love the video and the experimentation even more. An old friend of mine used to say "The experiment of today is the foundation technique of tomorrow."
I love seeing what people do with the new paints when they come along, and this Nighthaunt Gloom is too good to pass up the chance to play with. :D
Top tier painting tutorial. Fantastic result for a relatively small time investment.

I hadn't even considered it for the Van Saar! That could look really slick. Just dark enough to look mechanical and semi-futuristic.
