If you're looking for bodies on the table, I don't think you can go far wrong with these batch painting methods. The Citadel shades and others like them are a great method for taking advantage of that 'pre-shade' effect you can get with priming and drybrushing. :D
As someone that paints minis one at a time and tries to get them all as good as I possibly manage, even after almost 30 years of painting I struggle to get an army painting in a time frame that I dont loose interest. Definitely going to follow this guide to try it out some speed painting on my own GSC. Its looks really good for such a short time frame and it leaves the mini in the perfect spot to add more details later on.
I find batch painting can be a chore, having to paint the same handful of sections over and over across a handful of miniatures, but it really is the best way to speed up the process with an assembly line approach. Even doing five at a time will let you finish a mob every few days, which will get a fearsome-looking army on the table in no time!
Well worth the wait! I like that you minimized the amounts of colors needed and simplified the painting process. This will really help a lot of people and inspire us all to pick up the brush and start painting . Thanks for sharing this.
I'm really surprised by the reaction this one's gotten. I think there might be something to these! Someone mentioned it being similar to a coloured sketch, and that seems a fair comparison; as far as a style choice for wargamers on a time budget, it might be fun to tackle a few more and see what I can come up with.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio yes! Freakin cool video. I'll vote for guard because well you cant sneeze without needing to pain six of th ed blighters and Skitarii because killteam. :-)
So refreshing to see a video for newcomers that isn't filled with non-entry level techniques or heavy airbrushing, thank you! I think you could expand on this as value sketch painting is really easy to produce nice effects. I would recommend some inks to go with the washes but think that could be another section of videos for you. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
While I understand there's a niche for every variety of painting style and everybody's got their own definition of 'easy,' I do tend to grit my teeth when someone's suggesting a newcomer to the hobby ought to drop the cash on an airbrush to get started. Brush techniques are a necessary skill to practice, and you're not gonna get that by cranking the compressor every twenty minutes. ;D
Another great video. I've been watching for a while not really into commenting but feel like I need to this time. Recently got back into the hobby after about 20 years with kill team playing and painting with my boys. After watching your skatari videos I finally plucked up the courage to get mine painted over the last week or so. Thank you for spending the time to give us some inspiration and a different take on painting.
Nice one! Thanks for dropping in to comment - turns out you might have been exactly the kind of person this one was put together for! Really glad to hear the Skitarii ones helped out, so if you've got some Cultists needing a lick of paint, maybe a shade or two will do the job. ;D
Awesome work! I love these kind of introductory painting videos. Even if you've been painting for a while and are pretty deep into the hobby, it's nice to take a breath and go "oh yeah, I don't have to try my hardest every single time." And that's especially true if you're painting board game miniatures where there's a bunch to get through. I'm a big fan of the drybrush then wash method of batch painting small minis in big numbers!
I've found it's been quite refreshing getting back to the simple techniques and knocking out a handful of miniatures at a time for the satisfaction of having a bunch done rather than spending forever on single characters again. It's easy to get a bit myopic at times!
LOVE your channel and painting guide videos. I myself use a fair amount of dry brushing and creative shading to add a lot of quick detail to my Seraphon army. Definitely going to use your method here for my Genestealer Cult team in Kill Team
Excellent, excellent work. Great to see a video that looks at speed painting techniques that achieve a very nice looking miniature in 15 minutes time. I appreciate you taking the time to create all the videos that you do. This is one that I have been waiting to see, not because of the miniature per se, but to see how you approach the miniature painting and generate a very nice looking miniature in a short time frame. Please keep up the good work.
Someone described this as being similar to a sketch drawing - you're filling in shapes and giving the impression of something from arm's length, which I think works pretty well as a description. Folks have been so receptive to this guy, I'm going to try and knock out another couple of quickfire miniatures in this kind of style and try some others!
Thank you! Please, keep doing more videos like this. Although many of us can paint better, you achieve that sweet spot between speed and quality that is so difficult to achieve (at least for me) Kudos!!
Not sure if I've said it before, these videos are awesome. I think it's so intimidating for some people, when they see Golden Daemon level miniatures being posted on social media. This shows perfectly that good looking models don't need tonnes of effort to look good, especially if they're gaming pieces. I try to stick to the "does it look good at 2'" rule, I think it's a rule that doesn't get preached enough :) keep up the stellar work :D
I think we tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to 'keep up' with some of the great work we see online and in competitions. There's nothing wrong with aspiring toward and working to achieve that kind of standard, of course, but it ought not distract us from being able to just enjoy what we're doing and painting for its own sake. Bob Ross had it right: Every day's a good day when you paint. :D
another great video mate! btw because of your easy drybrush video for IH, this weekend I drybrushed 20 tactical marines and painted 2 captains, 3 agressors and ancient with banner. Going out and having a beer is so overrated xD xD
Plus you get to keep those miniatures for as long as you like, rather than an evening's worth of beer - though mind you, there's still something to be said for drinksies now and then! ;D Sounds like you're well on your way to a large army, too!
I started modeling at age 8 with Revel snap-tight models. Built models and diaramas into high school (through 4-H). After a 30 year break and now In my 50’s, My young sons were interested in Warhammer and we have been building, painting, and playing for 5 years. Always been a WW2 armor guy so of course I’m a guard player- since back when they sucked.
We're not so different, you and I! I got my start around age 9 with those same Revell kits. I suspect my grandfather might not have been quite so keen to see me develop a hobby like that if he'd known I'd be hunched over the turps and enamels quite as long as I did, though! Treadheads unite! :D
My father was a Radar Air Force guy. My first two real-glue together kits were a Curtis P-40 flying tiger and at Mitchell B-25. Seeming those two planes on the amongst all the other models on the store shelves still brings a smile to my face.
that purple shade over the clothing makes a really cool effect! never really thought of using a shade to tint a pre-highlighted surface, I might try my luck at seeing if a similar process can help me speed up painting some ork skin
With Ork skin, I've had a bit of luck by laying down a generous Casandora Yellow first, then hitting it with Biel-Tan Green. The yellow gives it a little extra depth and 'life' and will really help sell the shading. :D
With a bit of practice, it is easy! :D I think it's important for hobbyists to maintain a wide variety of techniques in the toolbox, and drybrushing is certainly one of those easy places to start where you can build on the foundation to something more.
I have Cult Codex Fever , and this is the prescription I need! :-D I have been using the basecoat/drybrush/wash with Nighthaunt Gloom for my GSC Kill Team and it worked wonderfully, THANK YOU!!!
I'm glad to hear it's working out! :D With a little more time I'd love to get back to doing some Cultists of my own using that method, since the Nighthaunt Gloom works so well over plain grey, but everything's happening at once! There aren't enough hours in the day for all the good stuff coming out lately.
Have you tried the Vallejo Earth Texture for basing? That stuff is amazing! For $13 you get the equivalent to a small jar of peanut butter and it’s super easy to use. Great for desert bases but I paint them to as urban debris. I highly recommend it. They also have 2 types of really cool mud (“European” and “Russian” mud) that actually looks like wet mud w/ vegetation in it.
I saw them once in my local gaming store and they haven't had them in since! A couple of buddies of mine use the stuff too and it's great for quick results. I've got a few of the Vallejo dirt and grime filters which are super good, very simple wash-like stuff, but the texture material I'll need to try getting my hands on at some point too.
I like this as a concept for beginners and hord armies. You have great videos for higher level painting. How about a series on 15 minute guardsmen, orks, edar, cultist, etc? Then link in the description to the more advanced videos.
I think it'd be interesting to try and tackle some of these other miniatures in the terms of absolute basics. What's the easiest way to do something that looks good and stands out on the table? I've also had some requests to look at more advanced techniques, so as for your suggestion, it might be neat to do a trio of videos for something - the bare basics, the 'good standard' and then going to town. Though I'll admit I'm probably not as sharp on the high end of things as some other folks on UA-cam!
Sonic Sledgehammer Studio- the high level can be a simple as a highlight follow up with extreme highlight or armor extremes. Besides the recommendations of minimal colors should include a detailed discussion on the brush. I think that a newby (or someone coming back into painting) needs to walk away with a shopping list.
I've loved watching your tutorial videos over the last year. Even though I've been in the hobby for many years, I still procrastinate too long on how to paint my miniatures and my collection just seems to grow and sit in the cupboard of shame. I noticed that there is a step that could be taken out in this tutorial. If you lay the base texture down before the all over wash, it can be washed at the same time. Then you're down one wash drying stage and a little more time shaved off. But great work nonetheless. Keep it up, looking forward to your videos in the coming year. Seasons greetings and all that :)
Now that's cunning! If I'd thought ahead I'd probably copy that, but in truth I'd simply forgotten and wanted to do the base 'last.' Shows what a little forethought can save you in time. ;D
I know this video is quite old, but thank you so much! Ive been thinking about starting a gsc army for a while but people saying theyre tough to paint has been scaring me away. Seen this and its really helped me overcome my fear of taking way too long to paint a bunch of neophytes! (Also what grey primer did you use if you happen to remember😅)
I am one of those parents looking to get back into the Hobby, been collecting the Warhammer conquest magazines. These sort of 15 minute, quick paint or minimal paint scheme vids are great for me as time is quite limited due to real life. :D Any plans to do more like this?
There's a Death Guard one I did a while back that's pretty good, I think, though not on the 'minimal' side of things. I could definitely take a look at that. As far as Ultramarines go, there's been a couple of requests for an even easier method than I've demonstrated before, so that could be an interesting one to tackle in the new year. I figure there's gonna be a fair few new hobbyists in the world that could use a hand! :D
This came up in my reccommended (I follow several other painters on youtube) but I have subscribed to you now as well. I would love to get into Kill Team (I sold out of most of my 40k some years back) but I do have a Khador and a Circle army for Warmachine and Hordes respectively. I'm not sure you would know but "The Fang" is the last Citadel paint I've been using in my current armies having switched to P3 paint for the most part so I'm actively hunting for another line that has an equivalent colour to "the fang" or a number of P3 paints I could mix together to make my own "The fang" so thats my current painting quest outside of actively painting models.
Admittedly, I'm not really very good when it comes to colour matching across multiple ranges. Half the reason I have such an eclectic mix of paints is that I like specific colours from different manufacturers! There's an old conversion chart on Dakka Dakka for paint ranges, but it's never struck me as being terribly accurate and I'm not even sure it'd have the P3 paints on there yet. I'm afraid I can't be much help, unfortunately! Kill Team's a cracking way back in for anybody wanting to just grab a fistful of models and have some fun. It's an angle I'm glad GW have attacked with real vigour!
No worries If nothing else I can just keep buying more "The Fang" until GW decides to change the range again lol The one chart I found said it was most close to Greatcoat Grey in P3 so I am going to try mixing that with some sort of blue to see if i can get even closer from there but really its not a huge deal to just keep using the fang.
I managed to get a couple of Battleforce boxes of these lovelies this year in Spain before they were out of stock, they've got new miniatures coming out next year with the codex, don't think it will be an entire new range though.
Call me jealous! Those big Overkill boxes were packed with awesome stuff for these guys. There's a few new miniatures coming with the Codex, too, which ought to be super interesting to see the army expand. I'm dead keen to see more of them on the table!
Love your videos, and your channel. You are a lovely bloke and I really love your painting skill. I do have to mention one massive issue though: Frame rate, I guess you have a camera that has 24fps? It is not a massive issue, but does sometime make your technique hard to see and sometimes looks like a slideshow when you are dry brushing :\ Love your channel! Keep up the great work!
Thank you kindly! As it goes with the framerate issue, all this is done on my phone - I can't afford a camera for this kind of gig, unfortunately! It records at 30fps if I'm remembering correctly, so there's not a great deal I can do about some of that blurring and stuttering in places. Just kinda stuck with it for now! If Santa's really, really nice this year, maybe? But I think he'd have to miss someone else's chimney for me to score a decent camera for that. ;D
Suggestions for GSC that have chitin on their arms or whatever? I'm thinking of hitting the plates with something like stegadon, leaving bugmans' underneath that in the joints.
I'd probably just give them a couple of generous coats of Druchii Violet and call it done, but if you were wanting something that'd stand out more from the skin, something purple and then highlighting with Bugman's Glow might work.
Easy wins are great, my son got into the 40k s couple years and dragged me back in...yeah, he “dragged” me back in. His paint skill are still developing so I’m always looking for easy ways to help him as he develops
I think these little victories are important for developing confidence to keep practicing a skill like painting, especially for younger hobbyists. It can be disheartening not to get something 'right,' so finding a way to try things out with a pretty safe, simple technique to build from is a great place to get started. Good luck to you and the lad! I'm sure you resisted the lure of plastic for as long as you could. ;)
Everything is practice, even the long form stuff. Don't be afraid to try out new things though, and try a different use of a skill you might already have. :)
thanks for the vid, I really like your simple but effective style vids. Couple of quick questions, what do you prime with or do you spray straight onto plastic model, also if you don't have the spray can you base paint straight onto plastic model or would you use a dedicated primer first and if so what non-spray one would you recommend?
With the Citadel sprays, you can use them as a primer - no need to go mucking about with black or white beforehand! That being said, I've seen some neat shading effects done by priming with black, then spraying a grey tone from on high to leave the deeper recesses shaded more darkly. If you can spray prime, I'd always recommend it over brushing something on since there's fewer ways to end up putting too much on, but I do quite like Vallejo's Surface Primers if you're in a bind. They work pretty well off a brush and come in a variety of colours, just like the Citadel sprays.
Great video this type of painting, will be a good way to beat Painters Block My current project is ACW Confederate 10mm lots of gray happy xmas Alex Mc
You're far braver than I am to tackle 10mm stuff! I squint at 15mm already, but getting even smaller might be beyond me... :D Hope they come out the way you'd like, and have fun!
I've had some good results with them on tanks, but never really given them much thought on infantry stuff. I've seen some neat stuff done with them, but it steps a little outside my usual 'just get the bugger done' style. ;D
just been giving this a go on some mini i've strip and re-primed, the only thing is there a medium grey colour so was wondering if i should go for a white or off white for the first drybrush?
I'd probably go for a just off-white colour rather than pure white, since it'll fit with the Agrax Earthshade's tone a little better. There's nothing stopping you from trying both though!
And the old Overkill box, too - if you see that sitting on a shelf in a gaming store anywhere, nab it! It's a great deal on the Genestealer Cult stuff in there and you can toss the Deathwatch stuff to a pal.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Yeah - I have to say im super excited about the Genestealer Cult - the Models are looking great and the bikers we got teased are so cool
I've swapped it out for Coelia Greenshade on my own guys and find it comes pretty close to that teal effect the 'standard' Cultists have. It's never going to look perfect if you're mashing them out at this kind of pace, mind you! ;D
Mentioned in the video that it's primed with Stormvermin Fur. You can't get that one any more, unfortunately; something like Uniform Grey from Army Painter or Mechanicus Standard Grey primer will do the same thing.
I like the miniatures, and they're in a few good starter boxes lately, too. I figure I've painted plenty of Space Marine variants by now, so it doesn't hurt to show a little variety in choices on the table. ;)
Dad here, getting back in after a two-decade hiatus using GSCs. Thank you for speaking directly to me and my needs!
First miniature paint job or 500th miniature paint job, this is a great approach to painting any high model count force like Genestealer Cults.

Really good stuff. Thanks. Have a good Christmas if I don’t see another post before then. Cheers
No worries If nothing else I can just keep buying more "The Fang"
until GW decides to change the range again lol
The one chart I found said it was most close to Greatcoat Grey in P3 so I am going to try mixing that with some sort of blue to see if i can get even closer from there but really its not a huge deal to just keep using the fang.
Proper job, that.
I always wait patiently for these amazing videos I love them
Love it.
Nice job bud
I'm sure you resisted the lure of plastic for as long as you could. ;)
Dude, this technique is amazing!! Big thumbs up. Any chance of a similar work up on a classic looking purple genestealer?
And there is me.. spending over 8 hours per miniature. Aaaand it looks not half as good as this -.-
Everything is practice, even the long form stuff.
Another nic3 vid...keep it up...Greetings from germany
Great video this type of painting, will be a good way to beat Painters Block My current project is ACW Confederate 10mm lots of gray happy xmas Alex Mc
You're far braver than I am to tackle 10mm stuff! I squint at 15mm already, but getting even smaller might be beyond me... :D Hope they come out the way you'd like, and have fun!
Do you think this would work on Acolyte Hybrids? I'm doing icy grey skin with dark green carapace, grey armor, and purple fabric.
Looks good, but I am fine with my 3:45 hours for 1 cultist and it looks awesome :-) But great tutorial!
Hey man do you ever use pigments? Great mini as always
There's nothing stopping you from trying both though!
great ! can you do the same for the skitarii of the Kill Team box??????? something quick
You might find this one useful: ua-cam.com/video/cpghNyxWVAI/v-deo.html Not literally as simple as the Cultist here, but really easy and pretty fast.
can you please do a video on the genesestealer cults goliath please??
Not just in Kill team but Tooth and claw too.
Very Nice Video 👍🙂 ....
when do we see another „how to ....“ napoleonic french inf. ?? 🙃
I managed this pretty easily but the druchi violet wash just looks a bit rubbish. Great way to get them on the table quickly though.
I've swapped it out for Coelia Greenshade on my own guys and find it comes pretty close to that teal effect the 'standard' Cultists have. It's never going to look perfect if you're mashing them out at this kind of pace, mind you! ;D
Was this model unprimed?
Mentioned in the video that it's primed with Stormvermin Fur. You can't get that one any more, unfortunately; something like Uniform Grey from Army Painter or Mechanicus Standard Grey primer will do the same thing.
You should do one for Post-Heresy World Eaters
Post-Heresy World Eaters? ...aren't they just red? ;D
AND BRASS!
You really like to paint genestealer cultists don't you ? :p
I like the miniatures, and they're in a few good starter boxes lately, too. I figure I've painted plenty of Space Marine variants by now, so it doesn't hurt to show a little variety in choices on the table. ;)
Super easy, barely an inconvinient
I don't know man, there's very little that looks better than straight grey plastic. I mean, other than... you know... paint.
