The competition involved setting up 2 sets of drive tractors and one anchor tractor to test the tires in the same field at the same time with the same sized tractors. Each drive tractor carried an equal load and could float in relation to the other depending on the grip or slip of the tires they run on. Both tractors ran at the same gear and rpm. As the tractors pull the anchor along, the tire with the most traction pulls ahead. The difference in traction was measures by the distance between the tractors at the end of the run.
