      Excellent. Next, I would like to see you take a complex tune (Stella by Starlight) or something like that and break down the harmonic structure (key centers, deceptive resolution, modal substituion) and your approach to improv on a more complex structure.

    I am a classical pianist & composer and I am so interested in playing jazz. I improvise everyday, sometimes it sounds jazzy sometimes very classical and sometimes quite contemporary. @@JoelElias2_1idk video yet, but me i take a scale, usually it's gonna be mimor or change a scale for it's sound more classical, like scale C, i change E to E flat and A to A flat and everything sounds good, for the melody of the left hand i do arpegios or chords/break chords, right hand just do everything you want in the scale, trille, chords, some chromatic if you want, octave. I hope it would help you, if you have any question, i can try to answer it. (And sorry for my bad english, im french)

      @@jazztutorial I've heard many times that as a beginner you should transcribe songs. I have a bit of a problem with that because the songs are either poor audio quality or are just too difficult for me. A series with easy licks to transcribe be great. @@jazztutorial one thing I’ve wanted to learn is how to play a non jazz song in a jazz framework. Take a song like Happy Birthday or Yesterday or whatever and show how it can be reframed in a jazz style. Show how you can vary the degree of complexity you take in a jazz approach. Can any song be reframed like this? Can Metallica be re-interpreted? Do you have to stick with the standard jazz chord progression through out or can you swing back and forth to suit the original song? Are there any techniques to employ to make sure you are taking the audience with you as you improvise around the root melody?

    Thanks, great lesson

    • @garethharrison5797
      @garethharrison5797 2 роки тому +2

      A7 is the dominant 5th of d minor so it resolves to the d minor 7 which is the start of the original II V I in C Major. In minor keys, the leading note or 7th is generally a semi-tone below the tonic (The root note). For example, in C minor the dominant 7 is gbdf (G7) rather than g-bflat-df (g minor 7). The b major is the leading note or 7th, resolving to the tonic which is the root note - C.

    This just proves the point that keeping it simple is the fastest way to develop.
    Too many teachers try to make ill begotten money and will try and mistify the obvious in order to throttle the max $ out of a student.
    I used to teach jazz guitar decades ago.
    I always tried to do exactly the same simple but fast track methods such as he does in his ii V I (vi) examples above.
    My biggest problem was that students expected it to be really difficult and was their biggest obstacle breaking the mindset that it MUST be diffcult..
    This demonstrates it fantastically.

    This was an absolutely fantastic dive into improv. I have about 13 years of classic local music training but after starting jazz this was the one thing really holding me back. This is super helpful for making it sound great while still letting you understand the theory!

      @@jazztutorial For years I was confused on how to get sharp and flat extensions to sound well. It's not very wise to use them as lead tones but rather use them as a harmony accompanying the lead tone. Most people show you how to build the dominant chords with flat and sharp extensions but don't show you how to voice them to sound amazing. You did point out in this video on having a stronger lead tone with certain notes in the chord. Your videos have helped me a lot through the years.

    Thanks for another amazing video! I was hoping someone could answer why in the II-V-I-VI in C major scale the VI is Amaj. Also how do these improv tips (enclosures, half step below, etc) connect to the scales mentioned on your other video (beginners guide to jazz) where you mention for example improv with C Lydian scale when playing Cmaj7?

      i was wondering the same thing re. Amaj as the VI. Did you ever find out why? It should be Amin in key of C Major, right?

    • @andresbermudez8498
      @andresbermudez8498 2 роки тому +1

      It's the dominant (V7) of the II. It's A7 to resolve in Dm. If you find a dominant chord in the progression and don't know how it fits, just look at where it resolves.

      @@danieljames8954 If you wanna play the VI of C yes, it should be Amin, but here that A7 must be seen as the V7 of Dm.

    This is awesome man. I wish I had seen these types of tutorials a bit sooner haha. Every time I played a solo in my high school band I would always just use the blues scale. Yeah sure it sounds good, but it doesn’t always work and it kinda gets boring! Your tips about the “whole step above” and the “half step below” and the “enclosures” were so good. I’ll really try and master these as it they sound so good when you play them!
