never understood why the Manics don't like Gold Against the Soul. Debatably the most blisteringly brilliant three-track opening punch in modern music history.
I think it was just the knee-jerk reaction to the perceived 'polished' production and feeling they had to go back to being 'punk'. I think JDB now regards that as 'selling short' some of the songs, especially on the later album 'know your enemy' (again reeling from the 'overproduced' tag, and consequently overcalculating the next album). I'm glad they don't feel dictated by that kind of reaction anymore, and can make the music they want to. Returning to your point, I absolutely agree, GATS had so much energy, a real feeling of youthful potential. I think Nicky likes it!
That was totally stupendous. All sounded so superb, esp the guitar sound on the solo. Can’t believe what a great player and singer JDB is sometimes. All the little fills and riffs, so easy to get wrong (esp when concentrating on vocals as well) he gets spot on time and again. I’m guessing that was you voicing your delight behind the camera on behalf of all of us not there. Brilliant.
