He WAS trying to sabotage it; he was totally done with the band and the fame at this stage and he wound up quitting shortly after. What makes this performance even more of a bummer is that John is right about to enter a really, REALLY dark stage of his life. It gets so bad that Johnny Depp made a short film documenting just how miserable heroin had made his life.
It's nothing short of a miracle that not only does he make it through alive, but he returns to the band and creates some of their most popular, beloved music in their entire catalogue.

I was in a band that the singer and drummer were mortal enemies. One of the last gig's the drummer broke a stick and the broken part hit the singer, singer thought it was on purpose and threw it back. By the end of the song the drummer had emptied his stick bag on the singer. That was the beginning of the end of round two with the two if them. Round one was while in practice the guitar player starts playing Tooth & Nail, We didn't play the song and nobody really knew it but we went for it. Well it started off pretty good but it did fall apart and before anyone could say something good the singer tells the drummer what he was supposed to of payed. The drummer said never ever tell me what to play or when again as he calmly got up walked over to the singer and punched him in the mouth, turned around and started to break down his kit. Singer jumped in car and sped off. Me and the guitar player started wrapping up cords..... Right after we stopped the tape recorder... Yep got it all on tape and it was a solid punch and with echo it was even better.

That's why every band member has to make sure they've ticked all the boxes like tuning, good knowledge of the setlist, comfortable setup and warmup. If you skip any of those, you're going to struggle at least a little. If you have a bad show, ticking those boxes means you can fake it through a bad spot and the band is helping you out. It also means the only way to screw up is a technical failure or you just forget something. Playing a show is an exercise in endurance

Idk. I’ve been in some awkward situations, but this feels like he went on one hell of a bender to deal with the situation personally.
I say that because he’s really struggling on that intro. It’s normal for him to simplify it, but he’s accidentally plucking muted strings. There’s no self preservation of ‘At least look good for myself.’

    • @MechanicalRabbits
      @MechanicalRabbits 7 місяців тому +6

@@jeffrey.a.hanson when your personal life and musical life become one and the same, the personal side going to shit can take out your energy to play altogether. I guess different people deal with things differently, but I remember being so stressed and unmotivated that I just stopped practicing, and went through many nights not being able to sleep at all, which in itself also made practicing impossible since I was always too tired for it. My playing ability took a huge nosedive, and even after finally leaving the band it took me about a month and a half to want to pick up the guitar and start playing again. I don't know what John was going through at the time, but I bet it was far worse (My issues with my band weren't even that bad it just wasn't the place for me), so I get it. I think that has a lot to do with it. There's also the element of the expectation to "play the hits" which apparently made John come to really resent the song and perhaps even go out of his way to sabotage live performances. The fact that he was struggling with serious addictions issues probably didn't help either.

Wow Mike! One of my favorite bands and what a great look at a bad performance.
First off, very thankful when I saw them in concert live for the By The way tour, it was magical and not dysfunctional. I do remember seeing the SNL performance live at the time and trying to explain to my mom, that they aren't singing off Key on purpose....hahaha
But secondly, what a great series this would be going through amazing bands doing bad performances. We all have done it, and we all have them caught on tape some place somewhere.
Love that as a guitar player, you still feel the pain of every other member on that stage. One of the biggest reasons I respect your views is that your not just a "guitar player", your a musician! You see the whole picture.
There is some stuff in that performance that John does that could be pretty cool on it's own if the tuning was correct and someone else was in control of the rhythm guitar parts so crucial to the song! Haha.

Saw them live in 2018 and couldn’t wait to see them, but I left the show disappointed. £80-90 on each ticket and they played for about 80 mins, missed out some big hits, few tracks were played at a really slow tempo, and Kiedis kept walking off stage between each song, looked like he couldn’t be arsed. No slight on Flea, Chad & Josh but there’s no chance I’m seeing them again

John was deep into heroine at this time. The whole band knew the struggles and kept their mouths closed, hoping he would stay, but in the end John made the right choice that saved his life. I'm happy he's still here. The 80's and 90's were completely different than today. It was fun and crazy but dangerous as hell.

2:20 That snare buzz is a constant, and it's really noticeable when you're sitting behind a kit. Certain notes that hit the drum's resonant frequencies hard will really make the snares sing, but they're pretty much buzzing whenever anyone is playing anything. I always used to throw off my snares if we had a long, quiet section like the intro to this song, then carefully throw them back on before I came in.

However, when I listened to the recording of it later, I genuinely felt depressed. He later explained he couldn't really hear my guitar, and I was like, "Well, how come you did not say anything about it?" That is why communication is so important. We are all capable of being off, but if you are playing music with someone and something is off, you have to be able to tell them about it.

Lollapalooza headlining spot was swiftly approaching at this point in time. They enlisted Arik Marshall for that tour once John finally officially quit. No slight to Marshall at all, he was capable, but the strength of the lineup- Soundgarden, Ministry, Pearl Jam- was such that Red Hots almost became an afterthought in the wake of 8 or 10 hrs of other bands before they took the stage. Our gang began the trek to the parking lot about halfway through. We caught a good bit of the set audibly while we walked, and there was a palpable feeling that the chemistry was just not the same without Frusciante. Great band, great musicians, great live show. Hillel and Irons were vital pieces early on, but they went the farthest musically when John was/is in the band.

Anthony Kiedies talks explains this performance in his autobiography "Scar Tissue" and says it's the worst himself. In short, he was very nervous for this performance mainly because he asked Sinead O Connor to watch it on TV as he really wanted her to like him. What messed him up is Frusciante as he felt he wanted to play it quite differently and it was not announced. Kiedies wrote John changed the chords which made him try to fit his singing and sound out of tune. He really didn't change the chords but did change some voicings, and his guitar wasn't in tune completely. I can imagine all those things add up and make you uncomfortable. I personally don't think this performance is so bad, hey, it's live music, I can listen to the CD anytime.

I threw a drumstick at a guitarist once, not hard, just enough to get his attention.
I was asked to do a couple shows with a band I knew, as they were looking for a new drummer, and I was just an interim. First show went fine. When we were loading in for the second show, a week later, the bassist asked me for advice on how they could grow their audience. I said I'd take notes that night and see what might need improving.
During the show, the band was pretty dismissive of the crowd that turned out, possibly because it wasn't that many people, maybe 20 or so. At one point the guitarist kind of gave up, and he was playing with his back to the crowd, just kinda leaning on a wall, so I threw a drumstick at him, and told him to turn around.
I tossed another drumstick at a bass player, but at her feet. She was getting lost in the timing of the song, and the drums weren't playing. I could see her getting frustrated, so I tossed the stick. She looked up at me and I pointed to my hi-hat, showing her that it was opening and closing on the beat heh. She was definitely cool about it, she just laughed and then kept her eye on the hi-hat. After the song I told her I'd keep it going the rest of the show, even where it normally didn't fall, so she could kinda crutch on it. In her defense, she wasn't a bassist, so playing in the pocket was super foreign to her.

The Chili Peppers are truly organic and they take you for a ride. When they are great, they are great. When they fall apart, it’s a mess. So I saw them twice in the summer of 2000. The first time was early summer and the foos opened. Homdel, NJ. They were amazing. August, Jones Beach, NY. They were good but Anthony was all over the place that night and during give it away. Chad was so angry he was hitting the drums so hard I thought he was going to break the kit. But there was a point where Chad was an actually flinging drum sticks at Anthony’s back. It was crazy.

I enjoyed this video but it's worth mentioning that this is around the time that John started dealing with serious substance abuse issues, and was subsequently replaced by Dave Navarro. Technically, this isn't his worst performance but his most experimental. Which isn't the best way to put it but the most accurate.

"replaced by Dave Navarro" - Replacing one substance abuser with another one! But i guess most clean persons couldn't have stood being in the band for very long anyway.

I saw them July 4th 2000 in Louisville with The Foo Fighters and John was playing all the solos differently and that would have been fine had it been as good or better than the way it was recorded and his back up vocals were off. The Foos blew them away because they seemed to be having a good time but the Chili Peppers were not.

Frusciante can write some decent riffs but I can't stand his improvisation. In my opinion he's a massively overrated guitarist.

The most interesting part about RHCP is the fact that each single member can be seen as unique: Fleas influenced one or two generations of bass players, Frusciante has a unique approach to sound and guitar arrangement, Kidies is Kidies and Chad is that muscular rock drummer how incorporates groove and funk. And together they form an even more special entity, that really set the tone in the 90s.

Fleas bass has only influenced one or Two generations? His influence is still around to this day.

I saw them in 1989 on the Mother's Milk tour. I won two front row seats from a college station at like 2AM while cramming for an exam. Fetchin Bones opened along with Follow For Now. I remember Tree came out on stage eating an orange. Some girl next to me was sporting a bra and a leather jacket asked to have it. He smiled and tossed it to her. It was a great show. As I remember it, John was on point. After BSSM, I guess the wheels started to fall off. Could have seen them in Hawaii in 1992 but didn't. Kinda glad, in hindsight.

Holy cow, the Chili Peppers was my first show at a small venue in Burlington VT back in 91. I was actually there to see Smashing Pumpkins, but the Chili Peppers put on such an energetic show, playing mostly Mothers Milk stuff. Pearl Jam opened for them. This was like a month after Smells Like Teen Spirit was played on MTV for the first time. One of the best shows ever. Each band really put their all into it. My memory of the Chili Peppers is nothing like what we see in this video, they were all just so full of energy.

This is a great example of what happens if you don't follow the old adage "Tune it....or DIE!!!!!" - Unfortunately, I didn't get to see them live until 1996 when they played before Kiss at KROQ Weenie Roast (Kiss's warmup show for the reunion tour at Irvine Meadows) - RHCP were great that night and more importantly - they were in tune with each other.

Thank you for this video! I first saw the RHCP in late 1989 for the MM tour. John was on fire that night. His playing lifted the band and audience. So when they came back in 1991 to play at the Aragon Ballroom with Pearl Jam & Smashing Pumpkins, I had to go. That night was a different affair. John wasn’t looking right, Luke he didn’t want to be there. He did pull off a sweet version of Tiny Dancer but overall, the band seemed uptight and stiff. They were professional but something was missing. For me

I think that was a great show to watch. I mean how many times does he play that intro part, let alone hear it on the radio. From experience, playing the same song back to back can lead members to mix up changes. This is great example of live breathing performance. Feels like it's coming apart, but always stays together. That is a strong band imo. Imagine had that been to a click and quantized?! As for Anthony, he struggles with pitch live regardless of tuning. It's part of their live charm. Thanks for the post!
