Bevan Darke I don't know if you have heard the phrase "how the sausage gets made", but most things we enjoy in life have a not-so-pleasant aspect to their production, anti-venom included. This facility looked about as ethical as it possibly can be.
The horses injected with venom would probably prefer not to be, but I am comfortable with that knowing how many lives are saved after their temporary discomfort. I guess some people are just too sensitive to see "how the sausage gets made". Unless of course you think we shouldn't produce anti-venom? Or really any medical treatments, which have to go through animal trials to be approved for human use.

Also compare raising a sheep or cow to this is dumb livestock is killed for meat in the first 12 to 24 months sometime sooner these snakes live this way all day everyday for decades the least the could do is rotate them so for 1 year that use these snakes and the other group get to live in nice encloses and then swap them with the ones that where being used to milk

Considering this is basically a medical manufacturing facility (of antivenin), the snakes are all being treated with respect and care and are healthy. And that’s all we can ask for in these kinds of reptile care scenarios. That everyone and everything is as safe and healthy as it can be.

@@inmydarkesthour2278 At MToxins we design our husbandry protocols to find a balance between safety, sterility, security, and meeting all of the biological needs of our animals based on the best available research and established practices in the field.
These rack systems allow minimal light in, and they are designed that way intentionally. Most snake species we keep in racks and extract from are nocturnal. They sleep in dark burrows or dens during the day, and are only active at night when it is dark out. These species often live the majority of their lives without spending time in the sun - They evolved that way, and their captive conditions should reflect that. We do house some species which prefer small amounts of light or other special requirements such as UVB rays, and their enclosures are outfitted with the proper provisions.
Additionally, the tubs within the rack look deceptively small, because they lack vertical space. This is also an intentional design feature, as tubs maximize the floor space that snakes need most. Extensive vertical space cannot be utilized by most of species we work with, and those that do are houses in special enclosures that provide extra vertical room.
The thermostat-rack system is also the most accurate way to regulate temperature and humidity for species with sensitive environment requirements. Rack systems simply provide the best environment for nocturnal ectotherms whose main requirements are maximizing heat and humidity while minimizing light, while also being escape-proof, safe for handlers to work with, and are easy to completely sterilize.
If you have any specific questions always feel free to reach out and ask us, we are an open book. Everything we do, we do for a reason.

I live in an area with the beautiful copperheads - and seeing that poor girl was upsetting. If you can't own the animal as it is, safely, don't torture it to make it safe for you. Copperheads are absolutely gorgeous, and I'm glad someone is trying to make life liveable for that poor girl. Everyone should love the forbidden hershey kisses snake! Their heads are so pretty - so bright, and metallic out in the wild.

I am from Oshkosh and have never heard of "MToxins". The next time I am in Oshkosh, hopefully June, 2023, I am going to make it a point to go there. I don't mind handling snakes of all kinds but there is no spider that is going to crawl on me. I love the way the staff handles the snakes and with the intent of not hurting them. Can't wait until I get back to Oshkosh. I am in Tampa, Fl now.

"You can watch another, just call in sick.." I love you guys, you're so cute and your energy is infectious. I mean, I'm not especially interested in snakes. I live in Australia, so there are some snakes around, and it's good to be able to tell them apart so you don't freak out for no reason, but I don't want to keep snakes or breed them or anything. I just enjoy your enthusiasm and professionalism and your joy.

I live in an area of South Africa nicknamed Mamba Valley. The green and black mambas along with Mozambiqan spitting Cobras, have graced us with their presence before. It's scary as hell but the people don't treat it with the respect it deserves. It's comforting to see these snakes being so well taken care of in captivity. Great job!!
Edit: found a harmless green baby boomslang (tree snake) in the aircon ducts of my car about 3 weeks ago. I wasn't gonna chance it. And called out local snake catcher and be got the most adorable tree snake.

Angie they don’t want to murder they just have the capability to kill. It’s mostly for their own defense (only being used for being able to eat otherwise) they’re not evil they just want to protect themselves much like you want to protect yourself from anything that could harm you.

This was super fascinating, so good to hear people talk informatively and with care about these animals. The careful handling, the way they're kept, the minimising of contact... so good to see. And to learn about antivenom production is super cool as well!
