Just FYI, my house burned down in March, 2014. Unfortunately, my feline companion of 8 years didn't make it. Neither did my laptop, netbook or desktop computers. My iPad2? One of the firemen said he saw it laying on the bed when he went in trying to find my cat. He didn't bring it out, but flung it into a corner along with other stuff he soaked with water. Later that night, he retrieved it for me-except for a cracked screen, it worked fine!! I still have it, but just keep it in a drawer to remind me of that night.

+Kylie Brokamp lol, thanks hon. Everyone was fine except for my kitty I'd had for 8yrs, Sita. I actually tried to crawl back in to find her, but a neighbor pulled me out by my feet, screaming. I still haven't replaced all my furniture, but friends found this precious lil ball of orange fur, a few weeks later, outside their store and brought her to me. Considering my kids all live on the other side of the country, my Lil Leela has become my now 2yr old "baby"-AND I've trained her not to be afraid of strangers, noise-and to come when she's called. (Any of which would have probably saved Sita-but she hid under things in a closet when everything started-it happened SO fast. :( )

+Rainbow Unicorn It's all dependent on how the force is applied. When the ipad is dropped, there's a lot of force being applied at usually a single point (i.e. the corner). The rapid application of force at a point that's further away from the center of mass creates a large amount of stress on the screen. The reason it shatters when it falls face down is simply because of the shape of the ipad (the screen sits a bit higher than the sides, so the glass takes the entirety of the force). When the firework explodes, since it's not in a confined environment, the force is spread about the surface of the ipad and is also exerted upon the incendiary pellets.
Also the mortar ball fell off the ipad.
