How does a 50yr old vehicle get up tracks like this?

- The Old Le Bons Bay track is located just 10 minutes out of Akaroa and offers a fun little track from the sea to the summit road.
When wet this track becomes nearly impossible (for standard 4wd's)

Nice to hear the birds and see the views ...and hear those multiple endless levels of silences....everywhere ..
"Oh the sounds of silence.....
Oceans ......
Flooding......
Mountain peaks
And sky.....
and in the midst of it..
Listening
You and I.... "
brings back country living life ...thankyou for that ..
Great production. You captured the sounds of the vehicle and the journey perfectly. The drone and sounds of the birds... Great job
Thank you 😊
Thanks for taking Liam & I out with you, we had a great morning. So good to see what the old Landy can still do!!
Thanks for coming along. Was a nice little trip.
You live in paradise.
That 50 year old vehicle was designed more with tracks like that in mind than the M1 motorway......where you are looks so much like parts of Wales where the 1st Landrover was conceived. Thank you for these great vids.
I genuinly thought it was Scotland it looks so similar,no wonder so many Kiwi's I met in the past have Scotttish rootes.
As for the Landrover I was doing this fifty years ago with Landrovers that were twenty years old then. Jeeps, Champs and DKW Munga,s and Unimogs also, only farmers and The Army had 4x4s in those days. The older generation had had their fill. After so much conflict, they wanted comfort.
Stunning scenery. A couple of diff smashers on that track!
Luv the old bone shakers first 4b I drove was series 2 mate
Tough, durable, reliable and manageable i like land rover defenders.
That aint no Defender Laddie, thats a Series 111, though I would'nt like to be certain whats under the bonnet.
If not the original two and a quarter lump, possibly a perkins or isuzu.
How does a 50 yr old vehicle get up tracks like this? Simple. First, it has to be a Series 2A, then 50 HP and excellent driving made it up those tracks. Good job, mister!
Thanks so much.
Good vid Hayden, have not been up this track for over 40years, good to see it again
Cheers Ross 🍻
Love this track, and yes much more challenging in the wet!
Yeah I've heard it's super tough in the wet. I've only done it in the dry. It's a shame there's not more tracks like that out that way.
@@hayden_jones Kiwi Wet, i'll bet it's tough ! No cakewalk in the dry !
Land Rover llega a lugares increíbles de la naturaleza y es cuando uno lo quiere mucho más
Nothing beats a well sorted Landrover. I wish I had an excuse to buy one.
Life's too short mate, if you want one, go and get it !!! 👍🏽
Awesome looking track
Yeah it's cool. Amazing scenery up there.
amazing, love this view
Good stuff Hayden - I need to get back onto my restoration 😀
Thanks Kevin 👍🏼
They built them tough back then and made to last not like todays Jappa! 👍🇳🇿
Superb!
Nice driving.
Thanks 👍
wish my d4 was rugged, although it'd eat that track, the wagon is just too flash and expensive, miss NZ grew up there, subscribed Hayden
Thanks mate. 🙏🏽
Take a shovel to the sides a few whacks then it would not matter if you hit it going up tracks like that! Or go get a V8i D1 and go play!
Hi Hayden, great to see some good South Island scenery, have you done Lees/Leighs Valley yet? Thank for the ride along, best regards from Melbourne.
Not yet! BUT... We might be heading over there soon.... Stay tuned !!
Only in a Land Rover
It's a way of life
Exactly 💯
Fantastico!
Cheers Forbes
My parents drove their then-new LWB pickup with custom made camper back on it from England to Bombay in 1970. They then shipped it to NZ, bought a building plot in Dunedin and were planning a new life in NZ. When my mum found out she was pregnant with my sister she got homesick and they came back to England, where they still live.
They sold their Landy before they left NZ. It would be amazing if I could find out what happened to it - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Not bad. Very capable beast. Looks like a beautiful part of the South Island?
Yes, it's in the south island.
@@hayden_jones I thought it may have been . Getting down somewhere around or near Queenstown . ? I'm in Port Macquarie NSW but did NZ & the South Island a few yrs ago .
@@Coastmac2001 It's right beside Akaroa (close to Christchurch)
Landies were built for this.
100% yes !!
How? It's a Landy...
Where is this please …great stuff .
Starts near Takamatu (near Akaroa) comes off old le bons track.
New Zealand 🇳🇿
@@hayden_jones thankyou for that ..keep well guys
What size are your tires? 235x85?
Yeah that's right.
What engine is in the landy?
Toyota B engine
3ltr 4 cylinder diesel
@@hayden_jones I had a long WB, series 2, six cylinder gas hog, and put in a 2.8, 4 cylinder Mitsubishi diesel, with the 5 speed, it had more power and great economy.
A rather hard climb. I don't believe you would ever make it on the standard 2.2ltr factory fitted LR diesel engine. Those Toyota 3ltr diesels are dead reliable and virtually indestructible. Did you couple this to the standard LR tranny or are you using the Toyota gearbox too?
Yeah it's running a 5 speed Toyota gearbox. The 3ltr Toyota diesels are very reliable. I've seen a few standard series LR with the 2.25ltr make it up this track !!
@@hayden_jones The old boys in their series ones used to make it to the top off hills like those in the distance over the water with 1600cc 80 inchers. Some had eight wheels on though, poachers, drove the cops mad..
