    Hey Anthony, Awesome videos, keep em coming until you don't have any moves left to share! One question for you, two step is quick quick slow slow, which should be 3 beats where as a lot of songs are a 4 beat count. I've had people comment saying they don't know how to dance to the music while doing two step. Should they ignore the down beats in the music?

      I love this question. Thanks for watching and commenting.
      Actually, QQSS is 6 beats of music as a quick is 1 beat and a slow is 2 beats (with the weight change happening on the first of the 2 beats). If you counted two step in numbers, the weight changes would happen on 1,2,3,5.
      Two Step music is in 4/4 which is 4 beats per measure, 4 measure per bar... so if we think of counting a 6 count rhythm to a 4 count song, that may be confusing.
      I would generally suggest not thinking of it in numbered counts. There is typically a down beat on every odd count and an upbeat on every even count. Thinking of it that way, you could count it as 1,2,1,2.... so you could start on every other beat.

      @@countrydancex Hey awesome response! I have a follow up question to this which is, historically, why were the dances developed as 6 count if its to 4/4 music? ive noticed this with some other social dance steps as well, maybe swing, and then also with line dancing you start the cycle over in an odd place in the song. Is it done this way because it is more intellectually stimulating and exciting? it would be a bit boring to do the same 4 count steps over and over ? too symmetrical? and then maybe also because of the delayed gratification of when after a number of cycles it finally gets back to starting in the "correct" feeling place again?

      @@sheetmusic5949 That's a really good question. Honestly, any answer I would have would just be a guess. Many dances are counted in multiples of 4 beats, though. Salsa, Rumba, Nightclub Two Step, Polka, Cha Cha, etc are all done in multiples of 4 or 8 beats.
      Of course, Waltz and Viennese Waltz are multiples of 3s (they're in 3/4 time signature).
      Where it really gets weird is a dance like Hustle which is a 3 count dance to a 4 count song. We count that as &1,2, 3 (or 1,2 & 3)... so technically, it would be danced: &1 2 3 &4 1 2 &3 4 1 & 2 3 4. Hahaha

    It would be nice if they gave a demonstration with music to make these instructions come to life. It's a lot of theory for the non-dancer. The music makes it come to life.

    Thank you for this wonderful video. I'm a native Texan who has tried for years to learn the two step and gotten a lot of advice from friends. I still could not pick it up until watching your videos. My husband and I are learning from your videos. Doing so has helped us bond and create amazing memories together.     I really like you progressive dance instruction technique. A couple of points I didn’t realize beforehand were body speed vs feet speed and distance between partners. Thanks Anthony!

    I think I dance a Tejano type of two step/ Waltz lol if there is a thing but me and my dance partner will get on this soon... hopefully we can move to more advanced stuff soon. I enjoy dancing with her.

    Awesome video! Lots of great tips. As a Texan, I've been 2-steppin' practically since I could walk; and I love it... I think your viewers will, too. I would loved to have seen y'all put on some George Strait and take a lap or two around the floor TO THE MUSIC, so we could see the rules in action. It's difficult to imagine all those tips without seeing them in actual use. Just my 2-cents worth. Thanks for sharing!

    The quick quick slow slow is hard to understand for me. I took dance class for a couple of years and it really confused me. Seeing how your feet move in short and longer steps then reading some of your answers to Grant Gunnison it finally dawned on me. Now things are starting to make sense. Thank you for the detail in your explanations. My wife and I are enjoying your videos.

    This took me back 40 years when as a 20 year old my friends and I would go dancing on Saturday nights at the club. We however, danced much closer to our partners than the two of you do 😉.
    The same local band played every week. Here in South Africa, it is mostly Afrikaans speaking people who do the two steps and waltzes, much to the amusement of English speaking people. The music was mostly Pop with Rock and traditional Boeremusiek (think Chet Atkinson) in the mix.

    Tip for beginners. Work on your peripheral vision. This dance is meant to be simple to allow eye contact. When you start you naturally want to look around so you dont bump other partners. You can learn to make those judgment calls and never break eye contact.

      Hi there! Glad you enjoyed it. You’re right… this is a really old video and you find that we’ve been demonstrating with music for several years now.
      Two Step and Swing are different dance styles. That’s kind of like asking if there is any basketball in golf 😉

      @@countrydancex I understand completely that you believe there to be a firm difference between the two. I on the other hand tend to believe that there's a little bit of swing in everything. Especially when dancing. Just another point of view from someone who knows only how to Fox Trot b/c I was taught that dance for Mayday celebrations when I was just a child.

      You have 2 hands and 2 feet. There are only so many hand changes and moves you can do in any style of dance. Many movements cross over from one style to the next...
      But saying that there is "swing in two step" because some concepts carry over is like saying there is basketball in golf because you put a round ball into a round hole.
      The same movements can also be done in any number of dances including salsa, bachata, jive, hustle etc.

    or even quick slow slow, (depending on the music).

      Even as I was writing my post I thought that maybe you were in Texas. Perhaps I should have been more specific by saying Deep South Texas on the border. Down here they often mix country up with tejano, cumbia, polkas, and waltzes. However most of the clubs are going to have mostly salsa.

    I am a really old lady, but I have always danced, starting left foot back two steps, to.my left two steps. To my right two steps
    Then two steps back. Starting the whole thing over again
    The man lead me and this is how they danced

      Hmmm... I think I kinda get what you’re saying. That doesn’t sounds much like Two Step, though. Ok that note, it is actually not possible to step with the same foot twice in a row. You must have the other foot taking a weight change in between (a step is simply a weight change)

    Hey Anthony I’m from North Dakota. I was taught the two step as “triple step, slow” from my mother and that is how they taught us in high school. The problem is that it doesn’t feel right to faster music. So we would resort to “polka” for faster songs. Around here we don’t see a lot of “Texas two step”. Mostly “polka” for fast tempo and the “triple step, slow” for slow to medium tempo paced songs. Although seeing a lot of “country swing” now. My question is what kind of step is our”triple step, slow”? To me what I was originally taught seems limited although it works well for turning in closed position. Love your videos.

      This does not seem to be the ragtime era two-step, which was often in 2/4 or 6/8, more like the polka step you describe. I wonder whether the Texas Two-step is derived from the Fox-trot?

    Great video! It is very hard to do this dance style while maneuvering through people when it is a crowded Dance (the loop d loop) Track! or Dance floor Why does everyone hate the 1 2, 1 two step?

      Thanks for watching. Actually, this style is infinitely more maneuverable on a crowded floor. When your feet pass, it create mobility. If the feet close, you’re “stuck”. If it’s crowded, you just have to take smaller steps.
      Btw... we don’t “hate” the 121 stuff. It’s just that this channel is for people who want to learn to dance. We simply teach what works. The 121 stuff is very inhibiting and, beyond the basics, is essentially broken.

      Country Dance X it was different for many people like in Augusta Georgia where i learned and Dallas Texas they two step like me. Here in San Diego CA and in Phoenix Arizona they do to step like that. Just find it interesting but would like to see if you could upload a video doing the different two step

      the Basic of Two Step since the beginning of time has had four steps. You cannot avoid putting weight on the right foot between the "two steps forward with the left."

    Great videos. One question. When you are actually dancing, demonstrating the lesson, you don't play country. Country has the quick quick slow slow. Is there a purpose for not using country.

      Hi there. This video doesn’t play any music... it’s a really old video lol
      Our newer videos do use music and when teaching Two Step, we use Two Step music.
      On the selection of music, we are bound by copyright laws so we can’t use music that we don’t have rights to.

    Not the two step I learned in 7th grade I dont think. We didn't walk across the whole floor there were people um dancing there.. I do remember a step or two forward then maybe step backwards then a slide which was a lead foot by the male changing direction of the path usually 45 degree angle never a 90 degree turn or anything lol..what dance was I taught that I'm describing?

      @@countrydancex thank you. I'm terrible at dancing still. I remember maybe counter clock rotation of dance partners and counting in my head and hand placement but really I wouldn't be able to demonstrate much on video.

    I’m a beginner, all I can do is slow dance and maybe a few of the coordinated dances but that’s about it. Believe me I got slapped one time, I ultimately failed to try 2 step but I didn’t know what I was doing so yeah that’s why I am here. Like if you agree😅😅

      i wouldn't want to speak for Rose and Anthony because they are true professionals who really know what they are talking about, but from my amateur's perspective: it really doesn't matter which beat you step on to begin the dance because Two Step is not a "phrased" dance, it is a 6 count dance done to 4/4 time. Most of the time you will not be stepping on count 1 of the bar/measure as you start your basic step. That being said, it feels most natural to start on the "1" downbeat to begin the dance. To do otherwise feels odd.

      @@autobus45 Understood. I am not certain that my explanation is 100 % accurate, anyway. And I think that it is really important to start on the "1" count when you dance. The music is written in downbeats and upbeats. We give the downbeats an odd number (1,3,5,7) and we give the upbeats an even number (2,4,6,8). So the music is always going "down, up, down, up, down, up...." You step on three downbeats (1,3 and 5) and one upbeat (2). You have to listen to the music and hear when an 8 beat section is ending, and then go on the very next "1" count. Requires an ear for music and a bit of anticipation. Not an easy thing for most men to do. Take care and happy dancing!

      The quicks can start on any odd numbered beat. Two step music has a down and an up beat. 1 (down) 2 (up) 3 (down) 4 (up). Start on the down beat.

    Two-step is danced offset... meaning
    toes and knees won't be bumping into one another and the guy will be able to see past her head on his right.

    In the early 1990's, we learned that the man's right hand rested on the lady's left shoulder while her left hand rested midway up the man's right arm, his right arm being extended. The reason for this is to allow a little more distance between the partners.

      Sure. Turns. With your arm over her shoulder and her arm coming from underneath , you’ll have problems getting the arms hung when initiating a turn. That’s just one of many. Don’t do that.

    When I go out I have the problem of not being able to make it through a full song without burning in my thigh muscles. What could be wrong?

      Hi there. Thanks for watching. We wouldn’t want to suggest that we know what’s going on with your thighs in case theres something physical going on. Sometimes, however, muscles that aren’t used often will be used in ways they aren’t accustomed to when dancing. In those cases, the answer is sometimes to be patient as those muscles strengthen through use.
