All kidding aside, much respect to the mechanics who rebuilt this beautiful monster. In general, mechanical aptitude is an art-form that is dying with each passing generation. Sad eh?
I love the overdrive howl. Dads 82 mack superliner had a RTO-12513 in it and it was insanely loud! Dad also drove a i think it was a 65 peterbilt with a RTO-9513 and it was at a good sound level when it was in overdrive. If you are trying to avoid headaches then i would not recommend the Double overdrive RTO-9513. I never heard one in person, but i've heard thet you are heard on the freeway when people are passing you in the opposite direction. I wish we had a RTO-9513 in our 65 freightliner.
Fine Kenworth with a great engine just pulling away ,, theres a lot of hills down your way ,plenty of hard pulling dont mind the box whining , most of the trucks would be groaning with up around 70 ton ,she is 50 years old and flying , great project its like brand new with a lovely set of trailers ,, greetings from ireland
I remember a few Petes and KWs with 12V71s here in Alaska with extended cowls (standard length hood with a 10 or 12 inch spacer between the hood and firewall to accommodate the added length of the V-12) - havent seen an extended cowl in many years though. Ive put a fair amount of time in a truck but I dont think Id be worth much shifting a 13 speed with my left hand. My truck has a Spicer 1241 auxiliary in it also. Plan to rebuild it this spring - 30 years of service with nothing more than a few oil seals and some shims removed isnt bad. Beautiful old truck, thanks for posting.
A.T. you will find there is still one KW up there with the extended cowl, I sent the owner a few photos a couple of years back, he is intending to restore his..i missed meeting him at the Yakima ATHS display in 2013.
G'day there young Kerby, man your going to be a wealth of info with a few more years under your belt. That old man of yours is lucky to have you so interested in those old trucks. That KW still has the SFDD Timkens in it, but we changed the gears to 5.2 ( the quickest available )now we have double over , 94km/hr at 2100rpm.Still slow for today but i'm not in any hurry. We have mufflers, but there's nothing in them.
a bit late on the game but to the guys talking about running the high rpms hard, these motors run at high rpms, most 12v71 and 8v92 motors run at 2300 rpm
Driving on the wrong side of the road!!! lol Look at the long nose on that beast!! Jakes sound AWSOME!! Hell truck sounds awsome!! 5 stars, faved and shared!!
Chris, It is the same truck you saw in '07. It won't be worked again while I own it.The truck you drove may well be the same one, there were only a handfull of W's here with the 12V71.I have photos of the truck with a fridge van in 80's, which i could send you to check out.
You can time them on the B setting and the EX valves will close before the INT ports and then yes it will be supercharged BUT! the problem then being is that since only about 2 inches of the CYL liner has cooling water to it they just cannot take the heat and can burn the heck up pretty fast.
They just sound so dirty... Naughty... It's like unbelievable sound, when you compare it to the "normal" 6- and 8-cylinder 4-stroke truck engines. Sounds like it revs 10000rpm and way beyond
wow.. kol vid! that trucks a real classic.. even down to the paint job... Im green with envy..but thanks for sharing(teasing) us with that video of her.
@Righty736, There was a Series 110 - predominately made as a industrial and marine engine! Allis Chalmer used the Series 110 in the bigger HD series dozers! Joe
I know but I just needed to have it confirmed if it was the Supercharger or the gearing or could have been an external waste gate. Those will whine like that too when making the low end pressure.
When you are cruising, Detriot Diesels love to be at 1500 rpm.. BUT when you are working, pulling hills, keep the 2 cycle Detriot in the 1700-2000 rpm range.... no sweat all day long .. ask old school trucker about that, they will concur with me..
Murray, Would love to come see the Foden, the Kenny and the White - especially the Kenny! It's gonna have to wait till I get meself a better digital SLR camera! Joe
mate, that is the most beautiful sound i have heard in KW in a long time, very nice truck, i seen it in a copy of owner driver and good to hear it on the net too, you have done awesome job restoring it , great driving, love the jake . an old truckin company down home use to 12v71's in there peterbilt's but i was only young and they sold them all off before i was old enough to drive them. thank you for posting it on here to show all us young bloke's what the real trucks look n sound like.
There was a 12V92 engine produced, if you have seen it, it sorta looks like two 6V92s bolted together. Similar to 16V92 (two 8V-92's in series). I dont think theese models were very popular in truck use, but more as generators or boat engines. Never heard of inline 92 series though.
Good old American steel, Love them old school screamin Detriots!!! Detriot Deisel was a division of General Moters. Do they have manufactering plants over there? Thanks for sharing.
huettmr, The inline 92 (6 cylinder - 9 litres) would have taken sales away from the smaller inline 71 engine (6 cylinder - 7 litres) - that is why there were no inline 92's ever built! Joe
It is funny how the old Detroit diesels sound so strong and tough, but they were not very high in horsepower compared to the new truck engines. I still like the older trucks much better as far as looks go.
There is a rule with these. Slam your hand in the door or kick the tire before starting, and then never drive below 1900 rpms. Actually if you turn like a 8v71N (318 detroit) to 2600 rpms, they will actually run and last better because they like the high rpms, and it doesn't hurt anything.
Teamster, yes, we were deliberately trying to make it lug hard to seat those rings in, should have waited and made the vid. at a later date, It sounds much better at working revs.
Not as bad as those double over 9513 boxes. Those things just screamed! Todays transmissions uses more teeth in the gearing. These old 12513's and 9513's had less teeth and bigger vs small teeth and more of it.
My good friend Allen ( Sparrow ) Hodson who (R I P )use to drive the old fodens in the Northern Territory he has a rest area named after him south off Darwin
The one I had a spin in definately had the wide grill as standard, like the latest W models before they dropped them . I've got some photos of it ( not digital ) which I can scan and email . There's a vid of your's being started in a large shed on UA-cam , have you seen it ? My own truck was at the show , right at the end of the line , could say it it is "post vintage" being a 1980 cabover !
No sweat, make another vid and post it. That is a beautifull old KW. That 12v71 is a totally bad to the bone motor, no doubt in my mind. I think they were low rated at 450 hp, and could be made to make well into the 500's ...
Pretty sure we saw your truck at the Sandown show Nov '07. Do you regularly work the truck or is it more or less retired ? They built them to last in those days , all metal no plastic like now . Quality guages and controls . In Perth about 1985 I saw a W with a 12V71N , came over from Adelaide , had the big wide tropical radiator and Seattle cab . Went for a drive round the block in it . She sounds good your old girl , like a real truck should .
Just currious, where is SA ? Used to drive a Chevy Bruins with a 12V 71 with twin turbos and N90 injectors but it was a homemade or remade truck. A duptruck used off road at Renabie Mines in Canada an the mid 80's. Verry nice truck truly a work of art. Is it single or twin turbo and what injectors are in it?
Yea they could depending on vocation. Emissions, fuel economy and other problems inherent with the 2 strokes killed them off. Ever see a 2 stroke not leak oil or blow thick black smoke after a few years use? Oh and the 12v92 never saw use as a highway engine save for custom jobs. One thing is for sure, nothing will ever sound as sweet as a Detroit Diesel 2 cycle.
how well does the RTO-1213 hold up? Because they're built to hold up to 1200 ft-lbs of torque. I'm pretty sure this has more than 1200 ft-lbs of torque.
Beuutiful hearing those detroits in action. Seeing that tritrain on the back where is that south oz or tazzie. The roads look a bit like godzone mainland.
WHere's the SSPicer? Is it a second aka brownie or a solenoid/hydralic switch like the main stick'ers? All anyone apparently can see's the Eaton main. Still excellent truck, and with those Australian train type trucks, 10 to 18 trailers, it's expected, esp.over the mountians and with a truck that old...
What do you have for rear end ratios? A friend of ours has a 75 pete that has 5:29s, 12513 fuller, and a buzzen dozen v12 and redlining at 2200 it goes about 55 mph which is around 88 kph. I got a video of it, check it out if you want.
Gorgeous truck with a gorgeous sounding engine. More videos please. Sad there isn't more of these still floating around.
Old Kenworth W's and B Model Macks , dead set legendary trucks, awesome video and beautifully presented rig mate.
One of the best sounding trucks i have ever heard . 2 Stroke Detriots and Scania V8:s must be the best sounding truck engines ever made
Definetly agree with you but I think the cummins 6inline (16 litre?) is definetly on that list
Sounds great and looks even better!
I love the sound of that Detroit pulling those hills.
Wow she's a beautiful old girl with the best sounding 12v71 that i have ever heard!!!!
I love the sound of 12v71! My favorite detroit sound out of all of them!
All kidding aside, much respect to the mechanics who rebuilt this beautiful monster. In general, mechanical aptitude is an art-form that is dying with each passing generation.
Sad eh?
I find that ludicrous as someone who grew up around machines. They are so god dam interesting.
I love the overdrive howl. Dads 82 mack superliner had a RTO-12513 in it and it was insanely loud! Unlike the modern stuff the Detroits have soul, your double clutching skills are to be commended!!
chevy82250,
I've been fortunate enough to see this rig (just the prime mover/tractor part) in the flesh!
Joe
I never get tired of listening to that V12.
Wow, what a beautiful rig! Great to see these time machines still out on the road today
id love to give it a thousand thumbs up what a truck and its wounderful engine and running gear great video chaps

Beautiful old truck, thanks for posting.
Did you rebuild it?
+IDreamOfDragons O
Yeah we did the aux trans and both rears - they didnt look bad either, those Rockwells are tough muthahs!
+Alaska trucker I bet they are my dad rebuilt a 10 speed Eaton transmission a while back. it was difficult to sync the gears.
A.T. you will find there is still one KW up there with the extended cowl, I sent the owner a few photos a couple of years back, he is intending to restore his..i missed meeting him at the Yakima ATHS display in 2013.

He realy should not be letting her dy down that low in the rev range ..keep her up 24./2800 after all they are a 2 stroke .
Driving on the wrong side of the road!!! lol Look at the long nose on that beast!! Jakes sound AWSOME!! Hell truck sounds awsome!! 5 stars, faved and shared!!
It's a 12v71 in this truck, but like I said a guy put a 12v92 in another KW and it got a write-up in Australia's Truckin' Life mag a few months ago.
Chris, It is the same truck you saw in '07. It won't be worked again while I own it.The truck you drove may well be the same one, there were only a handfull of W's here with the 12V71.I have photos of the truck with a fridge van in 80's, which i could send you to check out.
All 2cycle detroits are supercharged and they can be both if it has a turbo
My first time seeing a right hand steer tractor and seeing it at work
Great Sounding, Beautiful Looking, Clean Running Rig!
Kerby, It's a RTO 1213,the 1st 13 spd.Fuller made, with a Spicer P-1241-C Aux.
You can time them on the B setting and the EX valves will close before the INT ports and then yes it will be supercharged BUT! the problem then being is that since only about 2 inches of the CYL liner has cooling water to it they just cannot take the heat and can burn the heck up pretty fast.

Love the blower whine around 1:45
@Righty736,
There was a Series 110 - predominately made as a industrial and marine engine! Allis Chalmer used the Series 110 in the bigger HD series dozers!
Joe
@SteveCarras I think the lever for the Joey/Aux box is down low beside the seats!
A guy over here put a 12V92 twin turbo under the hood of a W Kenworth recently. They did a write up in Truckin' Life magazine (Australian mag.)
I love the sound of it on the surround sound.
Excelente video,el mejor motor de la historia es Detroit Diesel.Yo trabajo en Argentina con un GMC 630 con Detroit 4-71 y es único,de los mejores.
beautiful truck mannn I'm about to build me a 1/14th scale model of your truck bro, it looks fantastic
@unclewilly2 idk if its supercharged but this engine is 2-stroke(71 series is twostroke)
I know but I just needed to have it confirmed if it was the Supercharger or the gearing or could have been an external waste gate. Those will whine like that too when making the low end pressure.
MAck V8's also sound like the Scania as they had the same firing order. Too bad Mack no longer makes the V8's.
The 3408 cat as well and I drove a Mitsubishi V8 that sounds the same they all must share the same firing order I guess
total nice truck and sound
cheers Haustan
Bloody good stuff! Cheers!
nice video
trucks sounds nice
do have any recordings of things like its revving
When you are cruising, Detriot Diesels love to be at 1500 rpm.. BUT when you are working, pulling hills, keep the 2 cycle Detriot in the 1700-2000 rpm range.... no sweat all day long .. ask old school trucker about that, they will concur with me..
24/2800 with 12v71
ua-cam.com/video/-yiIbkcQBzI/v-deo.html
Great vid!! Love the sound of a 12V-71 Detroit Diesel!!
BTW- On the title slide for this vid it says "12V79" not 12V-71.
I agree with mrpowertorque- That is an absolutely beautiful truck with an awesome growl
chet328 ain't she a beauty
gotta give the Aussies props for the love of the old Detriot Diesel
That's the rig they used in Maximum Overdrive.
Remember the Goblin Circus truck? I swear I see images of Maximum Overdrive when I see this rig.
That explains it well Jeremy, thank you.. That old 13 speed does make a fair whine though.
Murray,
Would love to come see the Foden, the Kenny and the White - especially the Kenny! It's gonna have to wait till I get meself a better digital SLR camera!
Joe
the whine is in the gear boxes most likely the main being that it is a 13 speed
ken hatfield yeah probably a 12 series punching right at the top of its rating.
Sounds GREAT Murray!
Work that old Detroit.
mate, that is the most beautiful sound i have heard in KW in a long time, very nice truck, i seen it in a copy of owner driver and good to hear it on the net too, you have done awesome job restoring it , great driving, love the jake .
an old truckin company down home use to 12v71's in there peterbilt's but i was only young and they sold them all off before i was old enough to drive them.
thank you for posting it on here to show all us young bloke's what the real trucks look n sound like.
Roll On KW! I like the way you sing!
John

Beautiful truck my friend. That's a nice sounding jimmy diesel. Love the fuller whine.
@72klinger These are usually 475 hp, but who knows if it has better injectors or not
That’s the sound of the blower. Roots type blowers are extremely loud.
OH duh yea its your truck so I guess you do understand LOL. It sure is a real sweet classic. Thanks for keeping the old iron alive.
Awesome looking truck and that 12v71 makes some beautiful music....:)
omg what a beauty she is sounds amazing as well. Make another vid if you haven't already!
-Joe
Great truck! Makes me wish I still drove rigs.
Yeah a 12v71 could keep up with todays engines. Might not go as far on fuel, but will sound better then anything they offer today.
Good old American steel, Love them old school screamin Detriots!!! Detriot Deisel was a division of General Moters. Do they have manufactering plants over there? Thanks for sharing.
huettmr,

Great video. Beautiful truck / trailers
OOOOHHHHH The dirty dozen!!! that is damn sharp !! Thanks for posting
It is funny how the old Detroit diesels sound so strong and tough, but they were not very high in horsepower compared to the new truck engines. I still like the older trucks much better as far as looks go.
Love the overdrive whine.
I found a Kenworth with a 12v71TT on craigslist for $9800 i believe. I. WANT. THAT!
The jakes sound like they're releasing the compression twice as fast. Still sounds good :)
Hotrodx199 yeah drive 'em like you mad about 'em
Great truck..
**** and FAV..

Well, were half way through a 1952 Foden bogey drive prime mover, with a great old Gardner LW 6 cyl.-- that will sound nice too.
My good friend Allen ( Sparrow ) Hodson who (R I P )use to drive the old fodens in the Northern Territory he has a rest area named after him south off Darwin
Well you never know. Lately my Cummins has been sounding pretty good. I have some newer videos posted.
great truck and that V12 sound, truly awesome stuff
WOW!!! you are a lucky guy 2 have that truck
Nice sounding truck :-D Love the sound of a Detroit in the evening ;-)
Thats a13 speed with a couple of million on it!!!
The one I had a spin in definately had the wide grill as standard, like the latest W models before they dropped them .
I've got some photos of it ( not digital ) which I can scan and email .

How does a 12v71 compare to a Big Cam 400
No sweat, make another vid and post it. That is a beautifull old KW. That 12v71 is a totally bad to the bone motor, no doubt in my mind. I think they were low rated at 450 hp, and could be made to make well into the 500's ...

This truck is the fucking beast
I love the jakes and im proud to drive an old beast than the new ones :)

Mount Gambier, SA! Murray/Mercus135 only worked her to get the piston rings to seat properly and that's it!
Joe
man nice truck! she sounds nice!!!
Gotta love that upshift bark
love the truck mate, well done
we used to have a v8 and a v6 diesel detroit engine in out old school buses, sounded awesome
Yea they could depending on vocation. Emissions, fuel economy and other problems inherent with the 2 strokes killed them off. Ever see a 2 stroke not leak oil or blow thick black smoke after a few years use?

What do you have for rear end ratios? A friend of ours has a 75 pete that has 5:29s, 12513 fuller, and a buzzen dozen v12 and redlining at 2200 it goes about 55 mph which is around 88 kph. I got a video of it, check it out if you want.
man i would love to have an old truck that the drivers side was the right side
I wasnt aware that a 60 series will lug? Joking mate. A mate of mine has an 8V92T in an 84 star. She sounds the goods.
