I once hitched a ride with an empty rig on the main route E of OKC sometime/somewhere late 1960's (my buddy's stovebolt Chevy had blown-up after cave exploring near Jay OK ). Early AM the hiway vacant our host wound up that V-12 in 15th gear after switching-on a huge overhead light that seemed to reach-out a couple miles. We touched 100 MPH several times! The sound of that mighty 2-stroke clings to my memory at age 83.
Nothing sounds like a Detroit Diesel lad! Just like the US v8 motors. Affordable, reliable, and full of fun and WOW! Nice rig! Cheers from the heartland
My late uncle drove a fruitshaker like this that had a 318 Detroit....love that sound....cheers for keeping that old girl on the road...stay strong on the road
I drove a 77 Astro 95 with a nicely tuned 12v71n, set at 467 hp. I can assure you NO 400 Cummins ever presented a problem uphill or down! When the going got tough all she did was make a little more noise, never slowed down.
Man, the old 12v's were great! I remember my first truck I ever leaned to drive was a 65 Freightshaker COE with a 12v in it and an 18 speed and I jumped a gear once comin up over a hill loaded and twisted the frame! lol that really sucked
@MattytheDem - Yup, both heads are off of a straight 6-71 on a single cast V-12-71 block. I put a lot of miles on a White Freightliner like that one plus just the plain Freightliner COE's that they made after dropping White trucks to sell them. I love them as I was very comfortable for me to drive. One of the best COE's that I ever drove. 95% of my driving was in COE's until I retired with a conventional Pete that I hated.
yup, used to pull 47,000 out of Billerica, MA back to Jersey and just let it coast to bottom of hills on 90 and 84 then step down and you could feel motor twisting truck it was pulling so hard going uphill. 1693 was the original four and a quarter and was a bulldozer engine in a truck. Expensive to repair back then as Cat only had off highway support and was told you are paying for the four foot thick concrete floors in shop. 1693 was the brute and V-12 was the sweetheart.
Man.. I Love that Truck !! one of my big dream, dirve such a Freaking awesom 12V71 in Germany, and scare the shit out of our Scania V8 Drivers and Mercedes V6
Sounds like one bank of Jakes are half stuck on, a 12V71 should purr this one sounds like it's got lungs full of gravel at low revs. It does sound sweeter at flight revs.
@decaay sure it is. check out those large, dual split exhaust tips. the wheels as well. all those little details and specifics were only built on and for the M5
I have many parts for 8-71's including remanned heads, blocks, cams, exhaust manifolds, and more. These were spare parts I kept on hand for a boat I no longer have. George 727-688-FISH
had a 1693 turned to a 440 and used turnbuckles and chains on motor to frame as it would pull bolts out of bellhousing to motor mounts from torque. That and twist round axle housings in mounts peterbilt used to have. 12v71NA I also ran would pull snowshoe in PA @ 52MPH with 46,000 and just change tune in pipes. Today's generation of drivers don't know what they missed.
@decaay just look at some of the subtle styling cues. check that vent on the front left quarter panel too. that isn't built into a stadard 5 Series. only the M5
"Hes moving faster.......than a Jimmy Eight" Old Detroits are the best. I miss my Dad's1971 White Freightlnier COE with it's 8V71 (318). Nothing beats that sound... but this is pretty close with alot moore Ass to it.
Minddriver is right. Most shift patterns on Semi's aren't all that much different. Hell, an Eaton Fuller 13 speed, if you skip low-low range, is basically shifting a 4 speed, with range splits. Very easy. Some are tough, but others really aren't.
I've always been told that when you drive a 2 stroke detriot you should drive it like you stole it. These engines like to be ran at higher rpms! Awesome truck! What trans does it have in it?
Hell yea, looks like it hauls ass too. Its a Detroit TWO stroke diesel; believe it or not these things rev up to maybe 2800 RPM tops, but since its 2 stroke it sounds alot more like 6000.
The way to get the drivers to operate these old Detroits properly was to slam their left hand in the door before they went off on a run. That way they'll drive all pissed off with their foot in the accelerator to keep from lugging the engine. You have to keep Detroit 2 strokes wound tight. Lugging them will kill them.
he, hallo! jullie zitten ook al in de vrachtwagens? wat doen jullie precies met vrachtwagens? graag meer van dit soort filmpjes! vooral van deze 12x71!!! magisch geluid!!

Those 12V71s had some pretty awesome torque! I've got some old footage of a '70 Brockway with the 12V71. I'll find it and post it. Thanks for this.
Whether 6V,..8V,..or 12V,..I like the sound of those old Detroit two strokes! Even a 6-71 engine sounds good! And,..I'm a Freightliner fan, too!
My late uncle drove a fruitshaker like this that had a 318 Detroit....love that sound....cheers for keeping that old girl on the road...stay strong on the road
No,12V71 is V12 and 71 cubic inches per cylinder for a total of 852 cubic inches or about 14 liters.
Greatest engines ever made and that truck is so kick ass it's amazing.
Thats sweet! Glad you love the Detroit as much as we truck fans. One could hear it miles away. Owns the road.

neil farnell imagine if it was a T model 12v

I love what you guys do at STP. I'm a fan of old Detroit diesels too!
@MattytheDem - Yup, both heads are off of a straight 6-71 on a single cast V-12-71 block.

Fun cab ride! King of the road for sure. You have to love the sound of the 12 banger 2 stroke mill.

Wow can't believe these had to go =(. Wish I lived in the 70 's big v8 muscle cars and two stroke diesels
that thing is an animal i like how the whole rigs rocks when romping on the throttle
Buzzing dozen - no other sound like it - Best one I knew of had 100mm injectors, twin Turboes, and made 1250 hp in a long nose W9oo Kenworth
The people in the tiny cars going the other way were crapping their pants!!! LOL. Sweet old freighshaker!!! I want one bad!
Wow!!! I love Cabovers, especially those with Detroits in em!!! They're bumpy as hell, but oh so fun to drive!
Man.. I Love that Truck !!
one of my big dream, dirve such a Freaking awesom 12V71 in Germany, and scare the shit out of our Scania V8 Drivers and Mercedes V6
Looks like the netherlands!
Cool old trucks are far inbetween there, good job man
What a bad ass big rig!!!! Cool video,, THANKS
Sounds like one bank of Jakes are half stuck on, a 12V71 should purr this one sounds like it's got lungs full of gravel at low revs. It does sound sweeter at flight revs.
Hmmmm- Detroit, the most efficient way to turn diesel fuel into noise!
She's got one hell of a roar! Very nice!
@decaay sure it is. check out those large, dual split exhaust tips. the wheels as well. all those little details and specifics were only built on and for the M5
Very good sound v12 diesel
Awesome Video!🎥
Trust me, the novelty wears off quickly when you are running them from Vancouver bc to Los Angeles
12V Freightliners are pretty rare. Freightliners in Europe are equally rare.
I have many parts for 8-71's including remanned heads, blocks, cams, exhaust manifolds, and more. These were spare parts I kept on hand for a boat I no longer have. George 727-688-FISH
Damn that Buzzin' Dozen still sounds good.
surprised 12V in A freightliner CO wasn't one of those powerliners with the big grille.
@bugablue GM used to own Detriot Diesel, and that's why they were called Jimmys!
I love these old machines.
that detroit sounds pissed, just the way it should be.
had a 1693 turned to a 440 and used turnbuckles and chains on motor to frame as it would pull bolts out of bellhousing to motor mounts from torque. Those detroit diesels always sounded scary but dam good!
hahaha that ash tray is the best part, its like the truck wants you to smoke
@decaay just look at some of the subtle styling cues. check that vent on the front left quarter panel too. that isn't built into a stadard 5 Series. only the M5
That is 1 bad ass truck! Nice turbo sound! !
Tk Kahivere that’s the scavenging blower it needs to run

"Hes moving faster.......than a Jimmy Eight"

i wish our 65 freightliner had this! Or a 318 at least.
superb sound... more more more.. please
That is just awesome 😍.
Btw. Nice Trabant... 😉
Trabant is gei
yes that motor sounds really good.
The only thing that a Buzzin Dozen couldn't pass was a fuel stop.
Minddriver is right. Most shift patterns on Semi's aren't all that much different. Hell, an Eaton Fuller 13 speed, if you skip low-low range, is basically shifting a 4 speed, with range splits. Very easy. Some are tough, but others really aren't.
@decaay it's the silver BMW on the end closest to the camera around the 30 second area
12V71 sounds downright ANGRY. Good old dirty dozen.
See how the huge torque twist the the whole truck when pushing the pedal.
I've always been told that when you drive a 2 stroke detriot you should drive it like you stole it. These engines like to be ran at higher rpms! Awesome truck! What trans does it have in it?
It seems to me as if this freightlimer was one of the rare engines over here in Europe
@TheFireman203 I agree. who needs a stereo Eh? you have this jewel of an engine to listen to :)
Hell yea, looks like it hauls ass too. Its a Detroit TWO stroke diesel; believe it or not these things rev up to maybe 2800 RPM tops, but since its 2 stroke it sounds alot more like 6000.
That's an American original right there.
Just imagine that in a GM Newlook bus!
this is a rare truck in the uk sounds great
what a sweet sound!
Gotta love those 2 strokes :)
Lovely sound
Neat old truck!
this thing is AMAZING holy shit
The way to get the drivers to operate these old Detroits properly was to slam their left hand in the door before they went off on a run. It has some balls.
Dude can shift !!
the blower sounds good. the only thing is about the detroit diesels is that the idle was too high
this is a REAL TRUCK!!!
Not exactly a hot rod, but still pretty cool. And fast for what it is!
Nice sound
Yeah I bet your a Master at it. Gimme a break!!!
Most coach buses use Series 60...Good engines.
2 stroke diesel trucks can gradually speed up faster with a heavy trailer than these 4 strokes today
WOW i soo wanna get one of them!
he, hallo!
jullie zitten ook al in de vrachtwagens? wat doen jullie precies met vrachtwagens? graag meer van dit soort filmpjes! vooral van deze 12x71!!! magisch geluid!!
perfect sound
I wish my Dodge could sound like this.
see even the europeans love our trucks! And the drive the mercedes and man trucks that can blow the doors off us!
Geez, mate, you shift like my granny!
Mooi stukje film heren!
Way to dominate the ENTIRE road!!!!
WOW!!!! what a rare sight! and very rare in your parts! is this England?
Netherlands.
very very good
no computer in that truck and not much plastic a real truck not a toy truck
Where do you put the DEF?
(ik denk dat 't ook in 't Nederlands mag) PRACHTIGE machine!
@yamahonkawazuki thanks lol i will sit an do other stuff on the computer with this pumpin out the speakers lol
2 Stroke diesels make the best sounds, check out some of the EMD 645 and 710 loco videos
Hello there. Do you have the longer version of this video?
@bisbutt I thinks it's in the Netherlands. They don't drive on the right and don't talk Dutch in the UK.
Must have a nice acceleration without the trailer 8)
nice sound! What rpm are you revving this thing too...sounds pretty high.
We want our American back!
They sound wicked, but it's olny 852 CID guys. A 400 cummins will pull that motor backwards.
i think that europe nice truck
mooi ding machtig geluid
because they were powerful an very reliable
what is this 16v-71, I'm from Germany and I dont understand that
no, 71 is the displacement in cubic inches of each cylinder. why would a US company use metric measurements?
