Pavel Bure was the most exciting player who has ever put on a Canuck's uniform. I believe he had 3 fifty goal seasons and came close to winning the Cup in 1994. That Cup run would not be possible without some brilliant goals during the playoffs. Every night he gave 100% to the point where he injured his knees badly that affected the rest of his career.
And yet there is a large segment of fans in Vancouver who blame Bure for deserting the Canucks and demanding a trade. They are dead wrong.

Comments in here make it sound like Cherry did this all the time. You really think Don just decided to make this up out of the blue?
He obviously had a source and I don’t doubt that there’s at least an element of truth behind it.
And the point of him saying that he always praised Vancouver, is to show that it’s not like he was always pissing on the organization or it’s players and for him to drop this bomb means he trusted the source it came from.

Bure is all about the money??
Pavel payed money out of his own pocket so that he could play in the NHL. The Russians were insisting on 50k from the canucks as a transfer fee, and they wouldn’t pay. Bure says I will pay the 50k if it means I can play now. So he did. Once he got here, he showed nothing but crazy enthusiasm for playing in the NHL every game.
He was ferocious in the 94 playoffs and was one game away from his childhood dream. Anyone who says THAT guy was all about the money and would sit out Game 7 for the cup for more money is completely full of shit. I don’t know where the rumour started and I know Cherry doesn’t have the imagination or cynical motives to make up that story. Somebody started it and Cherry bought it - because Russians bad, I guess.
Maybe management had been floating the claim as a back up plan if Bure couldn’t be signed, or if he had to be traded due to finances. The city would have lost its mind if Bure was traded.
Only Bure’s agent and management really know what happened with negotiations. But there is no way in hell Bure would betray his teammates and put an ugly stain on his career as a negotiating tactic. I have never heard a Canuck player hint that this was true in all the years since.
It says a lot about Don that he bought it and would repeat a rumour like that on the air. The man never did have a filter.

I like Cherry, but every now and then he'd say something profoundly stupid that can't be defended. This is one of those times. And after Quinn sets him straight, Cherry whines about "making one little comment" and getting raked over the coals for it. Yeah, that wasn't some minor criticism, Don. This was about as stupid as Cherry calling Stu Grimson "a gutless puke."

@leafyutube Agreed; at least with Quinn, no matter how much the Toronto media disliked him half the time & wished for Quinn to get the boot, the Leafs were a contender throughout his coaching tenure. Some of the fans got on Quinn's case as well...I guess the folks in Toronto never realized, until now, how good they had it with Quinn behind the bench. I was skeptical of Quinn myself sometimes, but he did a great job coaching in Toronto.

    • @andrewlowe9969

The Mighty Quinn had the second most wins as a Leafs Coach next to Punch Imlach and won more games in only 7 seasons as Coach than the Leafs did the decade before. Misses the playoffs in his 7th season and that wasn't his fault (they got lazy the last 10-12 games of the season and Eddie the Eagle Belfour was letting in some soft ones) yet they turfed him. Never have forgiven the Leafs brass for firing Pat. He got the last laugh though, his number 23 came up in the game the leafs honoured him after his passing Leafs shots 23, a goal with 23 seconds left in the first period and 23 seconds into the 2nd period. His spirit was in the building for sure!

Quinn messed up the relationship with Pavel in so many ways it's not even funny. Bure asked to be traded almost immediately upon arriving in Vancouver. Between Quinn and Burke it's no wonder the guy wanted out. As for Grapes, you have to make allowances for people who have been through the peak of the Cold War. Until you go back and explore the 1970s, you can't understand where Cherry is coming from.

Don Cherry didn't like Pavel because he was an old fashioned, western conservative and a complete mark for the Cold War. Pat Quinn was just an idiot. This is the same guy that, let's not forget, thought Cliff Running, a then consistent 60+ point centre in his prime, wasn't work $1 million. He also pissed off Wayne Freaking Gretzky, who wanted to come to Vancouver until Pat gave him an ultimatum (?!) and decided Mark Messier in his late 30s, after 6 Cup rings, was still worth $24 million over 3 seasons - 2 years after he said no to $1 million for Cliff, who was 30 years old. Before we praise Pat Quinn too much, let's not forget the guy wasn't exactly pristine as a GM or coach. He hd one cinderella playoff run in 1994 when they were already on the way down and arguably 1991-92 was the Canucks best season in the 90s. They just couldn't get it done in the playoffs. Losing Larionov was brutal. Say what you want about Murray Craven, he wasn't Igor. I look on 1994 fondly too, because I think with some far officiating, we might have won, but there were some big mistakes that led to some really dark times. Quinn was borderline awful at the draft table if you take out Bure, Linden, Aucoin and Ohlund. They never did get that perfect set up man for Pavel and when they brought in a top pairing D...well, we know what happened there, don't we?

@SlightlyRaisedEyebro Hey, relax, dont get so emotional, its a game we all love. I never said vancouver didnt do well, im just saying there was so much hype around them, they were "guaranteed" to win, and they lost on home ice. Not to mention, they had the best record in wins at home, too. So you're sitting there, saying that boston is worse than them, when they came back from being down 2-0 in the series, and took it all. So be disgusted all you want, just dont cry anymore. thanks

I loved watching Bure, but definately got the vibe that he wasn't the truest player to his team, I could definately see him leaving for not getting enough dough

holy christ, cherry can barely speak correctly even 15 years ago. thought his incoherency was just a recent thing. don't get me wrong, he's a national treasure, but he muddles his words and sentences to shit and can rarely pronounce a player's name right (kevin BIESSKA?)

Glad you are smiling as I am too. Love UA-cam. I just wish more people would provide a comment or 10 while in the line up for a movie or a red light. Bring out the bull horn! ha ha

I walked in the dressing room of the Canucks during a series of 3 games in March back in 1995. My buddy played for the Canucks in the Pacific Stadium and I enjoyed a few cold ones as I read fan mail. Bure, Linden, Valk and Pat were all super cool....but I always wondered why the Russian mafia were in the dressing room.

Yes I agree with you that it's a good thing that Cherry the clown is getting closer and closer to his deathbed. I must admit that I also agree with you on the fact that Cherry would fit in much better at a traveling circus together with the bearded lady! It's a good thing that we got so much in common, don't ya think?
