I unfortunately never got the chance to meet Dave, but he will forever live in my fly box and my library. His hair big is one of my favorite bass flies and his Near Nuff crayfish is responsible for the biggest smallmouth I have ever caught.

Thank you Brian, nicely done. I hadn't heard of his passing. I had the good fortune to meet Dave at a show Jan 11, 1997. I only know the date because he took the time to sign and do a lovely, little illustration and note of encouragement in each of the books I bought. One was his Guide to Aquatic Trout Foods and the other the L.L. Bean Fly Fishing for Bass Handbook. He was not just wonderfully talented, he was enthusiastic and generous with his time and knowledge... He was a great ambassador for the sport. Thank you as well, I certainly have benefit from your videos and insights and I greatly appreciate it. I am sorry for your loss sir. best, marc

Nice to remember such a good friend and remind us of what he brought to our sport . I remembered buying his book in the mid 80s and it changed not only the way I fished but also what I tied . I can’t tell you how many people I’ve given this book to read when they start asking me about aquatic insects and there life cycles. To this day it’s still one of the best books and every fly fisherman should read it . Thanks for sharing

Great tribute Brian. When Dave passed I had a drawing of his from Trout magazine of his Night Stalker fly on my bench, I’d been making some modifications for night fishing for bass. I caught some beauties with it that week. I was honored to be using that when I got the terrible news. Happy Holy fishing Dave. Thank you Brian and MRO. I really look forward to your upcoming videos.

I have Dave's Artwork Hanging on our Bedroom Wall. Guy was So Talented in Teaching, Drawing & Painting, Tying, Swinging Wets and was also a Chemist. I have a Book Signed by LaFontaine and Jack Dennis and Several Prints from Whitlock. Lefty once called when I was at Chris Helms. Now they both Gone. I wonder what ever happened to Kauffman. I think he was incredibly talented as well. Dan Bailey I think has passed as well, I was once in their Shop. Joan Wulff, Flip, and Galloup still around. We need to Cherish them.

I have one of Dave Whitlock’s books. Excellent artistry with concise notes on biology, behavior, and fishing techniques to make the fly work best to imitate the movement of trout food species. Mr. Whitlock’s publications are worth adding to any fly fishing library. RIP

Dave was a true gentleman. I was fortunate to meet and talk with him on several occasions. On my first meeting with him, he drew some artwork in my copy of Aquatic Trout Foods. I bought another copy to use as my working copy, and I keep the signed copy on my bookshelf. He was a fellow Oklahoman and the last time I talked with him a couple of years ago, he gave me his phone number and told me to call him when I was in the area to go fishing. Sadly, I let that opportunity slip away.

I've been out of the loop for a while. I'm lucky to get to fish 6 or 8 times a year for the past couple years. I had no idea that he had passed. Heartbreaking. He was yet another one of those pivotal people teaching and bringing new people into fly fishing. I already had a book or two of his on the shelf when I was 14 or 15. I also seem to remember seeing his drawings and illustrations EVERYWHERE.
I'm sorry you lost a friend, Brian, and i'm sorry the community lost another legend. Modern fly fishing is truly built on the shoulders of giants.

I am sorry for your loss Brian. I know what it is like when a friend and hero is lost. It's very difficult. I am definitely looking forward to your entomology series because it is a weak area for me. And I will be sure to think of your friend Dave Whitlock every time I learn something from you about the bugs that trout eat. Thank you for posting this. Based on everything I have read or heard and especially from you, he was truly a special human being. May he be with you always.

I never met Dave but if he was anything like most of the, let's call them senior, members of the fishing community I'm sure he was very generous with his knowledge and skills. This generation is leaving us too quickly so for any of you younger guys if you get a chance go to see these folks whether it be at a show or elsewhere, just go. After the show go talk to them, they are usually more than willing to share their experiences. God speed Dave.
