To be fair, Derek was never very happy or very good being a vampire... And he was terribly lonely. So at least now he has a comunity who will embrace him! That's nice!
I love to think that Nandor was stalling to get to Guilhermo, because as soon as he decided not to kill him, he did exactly what he needed to do to find him.
