  • It's not everyday that you think about the posessions of former European colonial powers. But you should know that not all former colonies have gained complete independence. Some still have strong ties with the old empires. Curacao is one such place, and that's what we're here to discuss today.

More information about the video content bellow:
    1. Curaçao is a Lesser Antilles island country in the southern Caribbean Sea and the Dutch Caribbean region. It is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
    2. The original inhabitants of Curaçao were the Arawak and Caquetio Amerindians. The first Europeans recorded as seeing the island were members of a Spanish expedition under the leadership of Alonso de Ojeda in 1499. The Spaniards enslaved most of the Arawak for forced labour but paid little attention to the island itself.
    3. Willemstad is the capital city of Curaçao. The historic centre of Willemstad is a World Heritage Site.
    4. One explanation is that Curaçao was the name by which the indigenous peoples of the island identified themselves, their autonym. Early Spanish accounts support this theory, as they refer to the indigenous peoples as Indios Curaçaos.
    5. In 1954 Curaçao was joined with the other Dutch colonies in the Caribbean into the Netherlands Antilles. Discontent with Curaçao's seemingly subordinate relationship to the Netherlands and ongoing racial discrimination and a rise in unemployment owing to layoffs in the oil industry led to an outbreak of rioting in 1969. The riots resulted in two deaths, many injuries and severe damage to Willemstad.
    6. While tourism plays a major role in Curaçao's economy, it is less reliant on tourism than other Caribbean countries. Coral reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving can be reached without a boat. The southern coast has calm waters as well as many small beaches.
    7. Although it was given a separate status on October 10, 2010, comparable to Aruba, the ties with the Netherlands are still strong. Unlike the Netherlands, the island is not part of the territory of the European Union and for that reason Curaçao, equal to Aruba and Sint Maarten, does not have to comply with European law nor use the euro as legal tender. The islands are eligible for European funds and EU-wide cooperation agreements such as the Erasmus+ programme. Furthermore, the inhabitants of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands possess European citizenship in addition to Dutch nationality.

I hated when people paint a pretty picture of a country but leave the dark stuff out of it, let's keep it real, you also got to include the dark side of curacao, and as a local, I know for a fact that like every other Caribbean island in the Caribbean, Curacao is among the favorite islands used by the cartels to smuggle their drugs, there is a reason why the Caribbean islands are called the white route by the biggest cartels in the world, 95% of Colombian and Mexican drugs pass through the Caribbean islands on their way to Europe, corruption on the island among politicians, the police and other high ranking members of the society is a day to day business, the drugs and especially the human smuggling on the island has become a big problem, drugs using among the population has also increased, the island maybe a paradise to tourist but for us locals the situation is getting worse, thanks for the video thought at least you are promoting our island in a good way.

Can attest to that fact, as i have personally lost friends and family members to cartel traffickers. A few of them have disappeared, puff, forever.
Also, had personal experiences, admittedly innocently, of transshipment and pickup, decades ago.

If I understand correctly, every part of the West Indies has been a colony/territory/etc. of at least one European country at one time or another.

While I do admire the effort off creating this video. It pains me to see that often when most videos about the Caribbean. Doesn't seem to highlight the local population. The sun, sand and beaches are secondary to the people.
The creators of the local culture, tradition and general atmosphere.
The people should stand tall and center. Hopefully you take that as a constructive criticism.

I know about the Danish Caribbean. The colonial history is interesting and scary. Some old and troublesome eBay, I guess.

Curaçao means something like where the Medicine man or Vet guy lives or full of wild dogs or grassing sheep. "Healing" was the best one, though. It could be more simple like "Hospital."
