Tom reviews the new 2021 Toyota Yaris Hybrid hatch and provides an expert opinion.
Is the Yaris really worth this much money? Even though this review should have been all about the 2021 Yaris is a much better car to drive, on the new TNGA platform and with a new three-cylinder engine, it’s much more expensive than we thought. Why? Because of stringent new safety requirements. This new Toyota Yaris has heaps of safety tech, including intersection AEB and a centre airbag. But does it really make sense? How much fuel does the Yaris Hybrid use? Let’s find out!
In today’s view, Tom Baker from Chasing Cars conducts a review of this new generation of the Toyota Yaris ZR Hybrid finished in blue with a black roof over light Y-shape cloth trim.
What do you think of the all-new Yaris? Would you go petrol or hybrid? Or would you take a Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta or Kia Picanto instead? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments box below.

Congratulations on being the only reviewer I've read who mentions the spare wheel - why are they not making more of it?
Thanks Archie. A mention of the spare was introduced in response to viewer feedback maybe 6-9 months ago.
GREAT review.
You tell it as it is.
Keep up the GOOD work.
THANK You.
This car is really quite nice. I've always driven cars without arm rests and it is pretty easy to get used to. But definitely not worth $25-35k. 100% rather a corolla for the same price.
I feel it is a crime to not have an armrest in a 35K car. After market tends to be very flimsy, so better to buy the ones fitted from factory.
@@Abhinav-fs7rp Mazda 2 Has it as an option I believe, so why not just put it in given its a collaborative product between mazda and toyota? I do believe it is a crime as well, I just don't see why people complain about it so much. That's my personal opinion though, take it with a grain of salt :)
@@TheSabotageMan this is not a collaboration between Mazda and Toyota. The USDM Toyota Yaris is a rebadged Mazda2, this is not.
@@TheStigHCE09 The Mazda2 is a rebadged Yaris, not the other way around.
@@Abhinav-fs7rp My european August 2022 Yaris has an armrest, factory fitted. It must be a marketing decision for the Australian market. Price wise in Aus compared to some countries the price of around AUD 30k is quite reasonable equating to about Eur 18k or USD 19k.
Thanks for yet anther excellent review, Tom. I don’t know what to make of the Yaris, particularly the price. It looks good, it’s nice inside and the safety features are first class The fuel economy is excellent and it goes reasonably well, if you buy the hybrid. As I get closer to retirement, I want to like the Yaris. Unfortunately, I just can’t get past the price. I have a feeling other ‘brands’ might offer what I’m after for less.
good luck with finding the same amount of technology and maturity/refinement of the hybrid system in the competitors ;)
Hi Tom, great review as usual. If someone wants to go for a compact suv with pretty good safety tech and drive comfort within the city and long drives to country side, what will be your pick? Budget upto 60kAUD and preferably lasting more than 5 years with some resale value. I think too much of expectations ,buying car in Australia(sydney) for 1st time can be an overwhelming experience for someone coming from India. Any suggestions will be helpful(if you see this comment). Thanks in Advance(if this comment is noticed and replied upon 🙂🙂)
You get way more interesting colours than we do in the UK! Red is the most exciting colour here 🤨
Hi Tom,
Is this engine both port and direct injected, just as RAV-4 hybrid?
We place an order for the Yaris hybrid 1 yr ago? Not sure we still have the filling I had a yaris before I know the car
I think it looks great, but I wonder if the high price if it will impact fleet sales? Which are surely one of the biggest buyers of these. These are a regular fixture in airport car parks as hire cars. I know I have rented many (as they often have a manual version available). Otherwise good on Toyota for slowly changing its imagine with some interesting to look at and drive cars.
Interesting to see how differently equipped the same car can be all over the world. I've driven a rental Yaris in Italy last year. It was basic trim level, but it had an armrest.
Another interesting thing for me: Because I'm getting one soon, I've watched a lot of Yaris reviews - mainly from Germany and the UK, and now this one from Australia. All of the Yaris had the indicator lever on the left side, even in the UK, except in this video.
For me, if it was the yaris vs other light cars i would get the hybrid yaris zr over things like the polo gti. I'm a Toyota fan afterall. BUT would I get a yaris zr over say, a corolla sx? I don't think I would.
I appreciate the dynamics, styling and economy of the new model but not the price - Fiesta st for me or focus st line. The CHR and Corolla arguably better value if Toyota is your brand :) Great review Tom
Nice review. The trim levels in Australia seems to be under par compared to Europe. 8 inch monitors, armrests and much better looking seating fabrics come to mind. This really is a car for European or Japanese cities with heavy traffic. If I lived anywhere else I would opt for a Peugeot 208 or VW Polo. I should have mine in 2 months, Greece, with the hybrid engine and safely / driving features that won me over.
The trim level I have ordered, Dynamic Style, has a cost of 20.300 Euros which is around 32.000 Aus D. 8 inch monitor, electronic brake, better looking seating fabrics, armrest, different 16 inch alloy, camera assistance for parking are the differences I have noted. These featuteres are available as stabdardAdvanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Turn Assistance. These are available only as options on more expensive cars.
They should have kept the Prius C/Aqua. Larger boot space and slightly more cabin space especially for back seat passengers. And cheaper. The 2018 Prius C version sold in NZ for NZ$24,999 which is cheaper. Even the Corolla hybrid has less back seat space & less boot space than the Aqua/Prius C. That it would pay to upgrade to the CHR or Yaris Cross.
Keeping aside the fuel savings, I wonder why would someone buy this over Corolla especially in ZR disguise. I would definitely pay more and get the Polo gti anyday.
What do you think about the noise isolation and the acceleration of the hybrid? "the back doors open really wide" - based on many other reviews I saw unfortunately the opposite :(
You can get new hybrid mid version corolla but then newer hatchback corolla rear space, accessing rear seat and limited boot space are not great and that way Yaris then is better. For me from user end perspective Pros for corolla hatch are: electric parking mode, arm rest, wireless charging. Cons: limited rear space and boot and no space saver spare.
For Yaris Pros: decent boot with space saver spare, nice accessibility of rear space.
Cons: no arm rest, no wireless charging and no electric parking mode.
I have got the GR on order "maybe some time in Jan 2021" is the Toyota word here in Adelaide. I liked demonstrator a lot but the absence of the centre armrest/storage bin is a big glaring omission at this price level.
I have the ZR hybrid and I love it!! I'm not sure why but here in NZ its quite a bit cheaper? It was $32,990 which is around $30,700 AUD.
Isn't the PriusC based on the Yaris? Wonder if Toyota is still making the PriusC or are they now offering the Yaris Hybrid as a replacement for it?
Was going to buy a ZR Yaris like this till the price dropped! $35k for a small car - no thanks! Even if it’s fuel economy is brilliant, the upfront cost is just to damn high. Went for a Kia Picanto GT line auto instead for $18,690. The Kia was just much better value for money over the next five years.
Only Hybrid is available here in UK. We test drove the Excel version (comes with every option) in Tokyo Red for about 3 hours yesterday. It's a good car better than imagined to use around town and commute to work etc. Panoramic roof is cool reminds me of a Tesla Model 3's glass roof even. Not impressed by LED headlights which don't have Adaptive feature and even projector lens so cut off line of light beam pattern isn't sharp. It has head up display, can drive itself for a short time auto follow car at front, brake itself and keep in lane etc Costs around £22k with some discounts. Still thinking to get this or a slightly used BMW i3S which drives more fun and faster.
To quote the words of Darryl Kerrigan "Tell 'em they're dreamin'."
One of my favourites...
Thanks for the nice tour of inner Sydney, we really miss it :) There's a market for the Yaris and Toyota know it and have treated those buyers with an outstanding update. People who will pay a little more to get a rock solid little car that will last a very long time. Medical couriers, the bus depot changeover cars, people who see a car as simply an appliance to get from A to B, and cheapskates who see the ultra-long term value proposition. Well done Toyota.
cheer squad at the ready
@@letsseeif lol 🤣
I tend to agree.
The comments are indicative of why the small/city car is disappearing, "I can get a bigger car for the money", yes you can, a lure I can understand perfectly, but does that make your parking spot bigger?
How about that city traffic?
Small gaps are often the only gaps, and fuel is never, ever going to get cheaper.
In the decade you drive the yaris, how much will fuel be in 2030?
The cars listed as comparable class and price wise, will have a lower resale and their reputation for reliability has nowhere near the same level of consumer expectations.
Great review. Nice looking car. Price will knock it off most lists. But more importantly for me, the lack of the centre arm rest is a big miss Toyota. You can't even option it?! I would fall over every time I sat into the car. A similar issue with RHD Mustang’s in Oz. The cup holders in the centre arm rest are right where your arm sits. Ford was too cheap or lazy to convert the centre arm rest. I would never buy one for that reason.
Fantastic review Tom.
Hmmm, despite its “good” look , would anyone want to spend $35k on this car. It probably makes more sense to upsize to a Corolla ZR.
35000? That’s too much for this car. Better options out there.
Have to agree, the pricing is a risky strategy, given the competition but for looks, I think its ok. Little things like the single USB, small touch screen at this price suggest Toyota are still content to rest on their deserved rep for quality rather than compete actively imo. Glad to see the sass delivered appropriately here, Tom. $25-35k... nah.
35k... da FAQ? My corolla zr hybrid was 33k lol... its just spend maybe 7k more and get a rav 4
Better bang for bucks out there eg Hyundai n line Suzuki Swift with 3 pot turbo ,Kia Rio .Also at that price more punters will flock to the mg at 16k driveway
Does this compare to the Mazda 2, at all? Which would you stay is better?
Even the current 2015 Mazda 2 looks much more premium than this Yaris. Heck, the Corolla is pretty much the same price and it's much nicer in every way. I have no idea what happened here.
@@adam145 Why does everyone keep comparing the Corolla to the Yaris? What does it have in comparison? If I wanted its top-spec model (which I'd need if comparing to the top-spec Yaris model) I am spending almost 40K! I don't understand why people say X is better than the Yaris, and their X is mentioning a bigger car. I don't want a bigger car, I want the smallest car possible.
I also want a Hybrid, I don't, again, see why people compare petrol to Hybrid. Yes, from the get-go you're spending more, but that's the price of a Hybrid, it's not meant to be compared to a petrol. You pay more $, and you see that as an offset in itself, I accept the extra cost, and then my day-day is cheaper.
I don't get why there are so many articles calculating how long it takes to offset the price of the Hybrid, compared to a Petrol. It's like comparing apples and oranges. The Hybrid price, currently, should be accepted as is. Again, I accept the extra cost, and then my day-day is cheaper.
Again, sorry for the rant! Not at you, just in general, about car reviews! :)
Such a shame on the price. I really love the new yaris especially in zr spec. Even more than the corolla.
Lovely car, but at that price it's a no from me.
Maybe not a car for Australia given the price. Seems like a decent effort though. The extremely well resolved hybrid version will probably be appreciated in congested Europe/Japan.
In Europe a Polo GTI is like 50k AUD and a comparable Polo 40k. So its actually good value here.
Well, as of 2021, I have yet to see these Yaris running along side me during my daily commute from home to work and that is on the M5 and some of the busiest roads in syd ... I drive the 10 model!! I think it is because it is too expensive!!!! If it is under 25000 aud for the hybrid model, then maybe it is the sweet spot.
Late night uploads for the boyss
was kind of holding out for the Yaris cross awd hybrid, but given the price of that....nope.
Nice review as always👍🏻 Toyota have totally blown me away. The arrogance of Toyota Australia stating that if you can't afford the new Yaris "buy secondhand" is simply stunning. Pricing is ridiculous, and as the world economy crumbles I'm sure they will think again. As others have said, pricing against their own Corolla is plain weird. On this basis their Corolla based Cross model will be priced above the now overpriced RAV 4! I don't normally have much to say, but I'm angry when other industries are holding or cutting pricing to survive, Toyota are living in their own blinkered "lets hike up prices" bubble. Such a shame. Toyota are not alone in this, I should add. I find it a big turn off from the brand.
It's a nifty little car, with a lot of good points. But ultimately the Polo & Polo GTI for the same money absolutely beats the pants off it where it counts - practicality. The Polo is almost half a size bigger with more leg room than full size hatchbacks, such as the Mazda 3 and Corolla.
... Unless this is a taste of things to come and the other companies are going to start ramping up prices soon. Great review as always!
How do you measure your fuel consumption? Do you just take the figures the digital trip computer gives you? Or do you measure how much fuel by taking the figure from the petrol pump and doing the math to get a number for ?L/100Km?
The latter, the proper way
@@chasingcars nice work. I find that the trip computer gives a more generous reading than real life. Great reviews as always 👍
Thanks a lot!
Hmmm, that screen is so dated. The new picanto has a better screen, also not even electric seat adjustment on a 35000 car is crazy to me especially for the top trim.
You can get a nice F-Type or BMW M4 for that price. Or I3 in UK.
It's going to be ultra reliable though. VW cambelt driven cars won't be long term. Trust me.
Today went to car dealer, they don't have much car left and keep saying sell is very good under virus, this may be true, just wait after the mortgage holiday and end of job keeper, sale will drop for sure and that is the time to buy car not now. 35K maybe get a demo WRX later not a tiny yaris
They should have just stuck a Lexus badge on it and upgraded the interior. Then yes it would be worth it and would for sure have been a USP for the Lexus stable. The first super mini hybrid from a luxury brand.
why not to buy a corolla instead?
35k sounds reasonable and appealing if the new yaris puts on AWD plus hybrid
Unfortunately not AWD
Wow $35k for a top spec is a tough ask. It's pushing it a bit too high for me
Now with covid 19 I'm not so sure about such a big price increase.
well sad to say there are some in Australia rolling in cash and faking hardship; watch D-Max release videos and you will hear all these people ordering $65k cars as if it is $6.50! There are heaps of business and tradies who can legally keep most of their earnings due to favourable tax ruling - it is the mid income earners and the poor that get kicked in the gut all the time.
A Yaris. At that price!? No way.
Was going to buy one. Though maybe 30k tops.
35k and manual seat adjustment and no armrest. ? No value at all. Pass. I have a rav4 2020 which is excellent value. Not this one.
There’s really no moving past that asking price. It’s definitely going to be a turn off no matter how safe or refined it may be. I’m assuming these are similar prices to what Honda came up with for the new Jazz.
In UK almost to the penny - as other makers move to hybrid technology, watch prices rocket...
how about 2021 honda jazz hybrid
Looks like the new Jazz won't come to Australia. Sad!
NZ is not much better as due here second half next year
In UK, it's almost exactly the same price but Honda want to charge you 5% interest on PCP or HP - £2000 or so over 2 years. Toyota 0% so no contest. Also, no spare wheel even as option, dreadful looking wheels so another £865 for half-decent-looking alloys, and for me, it's just got too big. So Toyota wins.
Wow $35K and no power seat adjustment, at least leather accented seat?
You won’t find those features here...
Pricing aside, shame that Toyota decided to invest money into useless rubbish like a soft front dash when it would have been much better spent doing so on the rear doors, at least on the armrests. I’ve always thought it and I’ll say it now, it’s pretty much only car reviewers that give a toss about the front dash material. families wanting a small city runabout would get much more utility out of investing just a tiny bit in rear passenger experience in tactile areas, as nobody likes hauling the kids when they’re unhappy at being in an uncomfortable back seat.
Spent a tiny bit extra and get corolla.
Better looking car in my opinion
Sad the European version gets better kit, nicer interior and full stop and go adaptive cruise control thanks to an electronic park brake.
Yeah, the presence of a physical handbrake was a shock.
I would definitely choose this car over any European equivalent. You are paying for reliability with Toyota. This car won't break down like euro cars do. That's why I'm trading my car for one. I want something I can do 250000kms in.
I have a friend who has a 2000 rav 4 and rarely services it, never washes it, drives it like a maniac and it's done over 500000kms with only a gear box change 5 years ago. That to, second hand. Toyota charge for their engines. That's what I want. If I want luxury, I'll buy myself a Louis Vuitton bag or Tiffany jewellery.
I will go for Polo GTI😍😍
Yeh a proper sports hatch correction a real hot hatch who would have thought the euro better value for money
It's not the same type of car - GT's, Sri's and GTi's etc. are history - you are paying for some very sophisticated engineering and rock solid reliability...
Boy racers should and will look elsewhere. The UK version has an armrest and, almost unique now in smaller cars, a spare wheel as standard. Under 4 metre length clinches the deal for me.
Looks a nice car but the price seriously. Even the starting price of $25000 for a yaris you can buy a corolla for $28000. Yaris was always popular at the $18000 because of the price surely not now.
Wonder what'll happen for the next Corolla? Maybe that time the safety features will have come down enough in price so it won't make such an impact.
Why do journalists take the top spec model, which is expensive, and then complain about the price? Barely anyone will buy that version, because you can get a Corolla for the same money, and anyone that still buys the Yaris does it because they like the car, and don't mind the price. Lower spec versions are cheaper and just fine for most people. There's definitely a market for these cars. Recently I've seen all the previous gen Yarises in my area magically turn into new ones.
The lowest spec version is still 27k on the road
@@chasingcars That's still cheaper than in Europe.
I was disappointed to learn that EV mode has a range of 1km.
I heard Toyota have stopped selling the Yaris in the USA meanwhile we get a new one. Bit odd I thought..
Looks ok(ish) rear quarters make the wheels seem too small. Lift in quality interior is a good thing. I drove an old one and it felt like everything inside was about to break. Good review Tom, thanks :)
Oddly enough, their Yaris was a rebadged version of the Mazda 2 like we get here. In exchange, I think Mazda in America gets Toyota's HiAce van......so I've heard.

the "real" bezel isnt that thick. The button design is a bit of problem.
At least you get really incredible reliability with thr price aswell, this yaris wont break down as much as a vw or ford or kia
Wrong on the Kia from my and my family and friends experience.

Mk 7.5 Highline is a great car at a great price at the moment…
I'd pay max $24,000 for that. Not worth a cent more
I agree. Wait 1 year and they will be selling for $24,000 with only 20,000 kms
Of course that's what we would have been paying before the price rise - the big factor is all the new safety sensors. It comes at a big $$$
@@chasingcars Really can't put a price on safety I suppose.
you can get a golf comfort line for the price of this 🤦♂️
I like Toyotas as a brand. Very reliable cars, but might as well pay just a little extra for the Corolla or pay less for the VW Polo or Kia Cerato or Hyundai i30. For the price minimum of $25,000 for a light car, you certainly want your money's worth.
The interesting thing will be whether those cars see price hikes when they eventually have to adopt the same level of safety tech as standard as this Yaris.
@@chasingcars I 'm sure Toyota didn't want to charge that much for their light car (Yaris) but to make it sustainable to them with all those safety features, they would've had to make a hard decision for that price with all those safety features.
Some of us want a compact car for a variety of reasons, so those bigger vehicles are not for us. eg in my case, I need to get my car into a nose-to-tail garage behind my wife's i10 and the Toyota is just right. It is expensive (Jazz same tho') and I suspect all manufacturers will be heading the same way with this technology.
Archie Brock I’m happy with my little VW Polo too. That’s all I need. Small cars are cheaper to run and the space in them is decent with most of those small cars.
@@94vrcommodore Correct Gordon. I don't need 4 seats often or an enormous boot or 0 - 60 in 5 secs. I do need under 4 metre length, a spare wheel and reliability/economy. Yaris does it even if the technology makes it pricey. You get what you pay for.
Hahaha ... Tell'm they're dreaming ...

Yeah until the Honda breaks down, not even near as reliable nor efficient as the Yaris.
@Reconstituted Redeemed2 Yeah, and the vehicle will break down after the warranty expires, and in the long run the Honda will be more expensive to maintain, less efficient and less reliable.
A Yaris cross is a budget car for someone who wants to ride a bit higher but this thing is a different animal. These gadgets will push up the price so I might as well buy a real SUV.
I bought old model for 18.000 this one is priced like corolla, looks like a toy and has 3 cylinder engine .. Its ok from front but side look is really terrible. Also dashboard with those two small holes are also terrible. I prefer old dashboard with combination of digital and analogue.. Air vents are like in Citroen, look at that old Yaris propeller style, much better. Also display is awfull, sticking out of dashboard, terrible bezel.. omg..Actually I like old model look more. But people are different. Fuel economy is great and that's it.
I just don't understand who is going to buy this for 35k ... Unless there are cheap driveway covid deals to get rid of them off the lot
Toyota have come along away with there new platform and style but to me their engines feel like a generation behind everyone else. Sure the hybrids are a good party trick with amazing economy but I feel they added the electric motor more to mask how bad their combustion engines are rather than an innovation.
Is it worth 25k? No.
Good car, but pricing the poverty pack at $25k is delusional. Does anyone NEED hybrid when city cars are so efficient, anyway? Also, it looks like a manta ray.
$35K is way overpriced, but then again 3.3L/100km...
Yaris Cross 😊
Looking forward to driving the Yaris Cross!
I was lucky enough to see the upcoming Yaris Cross dealer spec sheet at our local Toyota dealer.
Yeah until you see the interior of the top spec limited with its horrid brown interior! Very impressive spec with 360 degree camera, foot activated electric operning hatch, electric front seat which I hate as like many no memory. But if the normal Yaris hybrid ZR is NZ$33k well then the cross with that spec will be close to the $40k price range!
Funny the base spec has the nicer colour interior.

Yaris Price doesn’t make a sense
Bought Corolla for $28500
Happy Days
So, Toyota sticks a hybrid motor in it and kicks the price up over $5000? It's a freaking sub-compact. That's like the Fiat 500. Those things are going for the cost of a fully equipped compact. And I repeat, "It's a sub-compact."
I currently drive a 2012 Corolla sedan, which I've owned since 2013 and had no issues with. I might replace it with this model Yaris in a couple of years time. It's certainly attractive inside and out.
Don't understand the appeal of two tone paint though. It looks far more cohesive when the roof and body are the same colour.
I'll take mine in electric blue!
John Gibson I see where you’re coming from, but I think it makes the car look more premium and lower the visual centre of weight, making it look sportier and more premium. The blue definitely is gorgeous!

The depreciation after a few years will be hugely painful. There are just way too many better choices, even within Toyota’s own lineups. Toyota officially lost the plot, but there will always some idiots buying it

Too small for this prices I will get the Kia Seltos much much Betterrrr :)
Yeh nah, it’s a no from me.
What a joke. Who is gonna pay that kinda money for a Yaris???
We'll see, I guess.
Don't compare the Volkswagen with Toyota, they are of totally different mindset. Toyota builds expertise "boring" time proven cars, Volkswagen bulbs bountiful "sporty" cars and the fact that they burn oil as soon as you are turning them on is an "operational characteristic". that said, some people don't care about reliability because they don't keep their cars that long any away and just want to have fun, so go for it.
That’s no longer accurate, and I say that as a Volkswagen owner. Toyota cars drive very differently nowadays - since the company started moving each model onto new platforms that place emphasis on dynamics. The president says “no more boring cars” back in 2012 and slowly, each badge is falling into line. The price is a separate issue - but Toyotas are undeniably better than ever to drive...
