I just test drove this car a couple of days ago. I drove around for an hour, on small and large city streets, and on highways at 80-120 kph. I averaged 3,9l/100km. The car felt nice and peppy, and the ergonomics were pretty good. Definitely very nice.
@@autogefuehl You hit the nail on the head. Toyota infotainment is still lacking behind Android Auto and other manufacturers. Fortunately, we have an Android option now. I am very surprised by the interior quality and seat. It is better than even Auris 2018 or Camry pre-2018. The 3-cylinder sound is more pleasant than the older one and has a better torque curve. The safety sense 2 with laser cruise control and pedestrian detection as standard is striking for Yaris price.
the question is, does it make sense to buy the hybrid over the normal one considering its a significant price jump. You would have to save 1000L of fuel to make it worth considering and the car probably wont even be driven enough to make it worth it with current gas prices
For people binge watching UA-cam this can be too detailed and boring. For those that are considering to buy and wanna know all the details this would be good. I watched it simply because carwow hasn't reviewed it and Doug Demuro won't review it.
Not everyone has 35 - 55 minutes to watch a review, so there is value in the shorter ones. I love the thoroughness of Thomas' reviews and the cars I'm interested in more, I watch Autogefuhl, for the ones I just want to have an idea about, I watch Carwow or something similar. Great for details geeks, could be a bit too long for the "bingewatchers". But all in all, these are great detailed reviews for sure. Thomas has catapulted himself in my ranks of car reviewers when he reviewed the Golf GTI (German guy reviewing a German car) and he said "capacitive buttons are bollocks" Big thumbs up for being honest and speaking on behalf of the people.
@@terenceting26 you always have an option skip some info, but Thomas more detailed than carwow or Doug Demuro, and that guys usually also have long videos
Additional interesting info: - The B mode does recuperate more at very low speeds and could thus be more efficient in this case, however at normal speeds, it does turn on the engine to use engine brake for long downhill moments, e.g. then used for running down a mountain while the battery is already full, overall less efficient. So usually just leave it in D mode. - PWR mode does tune the accelerator pedal whereas ECO mode tunes it down. - Toyota engineers say that wether Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium Ion battery is used does not depend on which tech is best, they are switching back and forth depending on available raw material, concise vehicle, use case and also battery generation. They are using this tech here right now whereas the new generation Nickel Metal Hydride battery is also being developed. - The Toyota Yaris offers central airbag between driver and co-driver as first vehicle in this segment, great job for safety!
The principle of B mode is mainly to allow you to switch the continuous transmission to a "lower gear" as in manual, to prevent heat building in brakes for long downhills.
The rationale behind the B mode should be properly understood. A hybrid vehicle has the advantage of having the possibility of using electromagnetic braking to slow the car because of the electric motors. Because of this possibility, the conventional mechanical brakes could be downsized somehow to reduce cost. Each time the electromagnetic braking is used, electrical energy is recuperated and sent to the drive battery to charge it. The problem is that during long braking situations (like when going downhill on a long road), the recuperated electrical energy from the main driving motor (MG2) is so much that the drive battery, being relatively small in terms of capacity, gets fully charged very quickly. Once the drive battery is fully charged, it can no longer accept any further electrical current from the MG2 and thus, according to Lenz's law, no back emf is developed to create the braking effect to slow down the car. Accordingly, the car's onboard computer then is forced to use the conventional mechanical friction brakes. However, since these are slightly undersized, they will become very quickly overworked. That's where the idea of using the conventional engine braking effect comes in. And Toyota does it in a brillant way with its Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) technology. In the B mode, the engine computer, using power electronics, sends the recuperated electrical energy from MG2 to MG1 (the electrical motor that reverses the car and spin the internal combustion engine (ICE) into operation whenever it is required), instead of into the drive battery. In this way, a current can flow, and according to Lenz's law, the electromagnetic braking effect is still obtained. However, in addition to the electromagnetic braking being obtained from MG2, since the ICE is now being spinned by MG1, additional braking effect is being derived when the ICE is doing work by air compression in the cylinders. The computer is not instructing the fuel injectors to send fuel to the cylinders and therefore the ICE will never start in this mode and will thus be working only as a compressor. In this way, the kinetic energy of the car is being converted into heat in the ICE, heat which is ultimately rejected to the atmosplere through the cooling radiator.
Yes, this is quite often (about always actually) wrongly described for Toyota cars. B mode is really for mountains to help to keep your brakes safe and not overcharge battery. It actually recuperates less energy, but brakes more with petrol engine. There is a Polish video where guy measured how much energy was recuperated for both modes during same downhill drive and for B mode it was less (not much but measurable and repeatable). Most importantly car behaves differently as in B mode it breaks so heavily (but with petrol engine) that sometimes (less hill) he had to actually press acceleration. In D mode you break less (but recuperate more), but you need to press break pedal way more and use actual discs (so they can get hot).

It’d be awesome if you can bring a decibel meter along so we can know exactly what’s the noise level about compare to other cars 🤟🏿 GREAT works as always tho

Rumour has it that Toyota we’re going to present their fully electric range of vehicles at the Tokyo Olympics. Obviously because of COVID-19 that’s no longer possible but they were scheduled for full launch in 2023 using their newly developed solid state batteries which allow a range of 600 plus miles between charges.
@@andydavis7254 Well, the Olympics were at first supposed to present Japan as a hydrogen nation. That seems to be ”on ice”. Now Toyota teases solid state batteries, knowing well that the technology won’t be exploitable another 5-8 years. In the meantime, they clame that they want too ”ease” costumers slowly into electrification via mass-produced hybrids, then plug ins, before full electrification. This looks a bit much like a desperate PR stunt, after realising that their ”wait and see strategy” on electrification was 5 years too late. The Coreans are leading, the Americans are pretending they do, the Germans have taken the turn, and the Chinese will eventually dominante. Did anyone notice how other drivers were trying to take a peep at the Yaris whilst overtaking it? Such is the striking design of it. Its actually quite refreshing how relaxed and refined the Yaris is at speed. Seems noise suppression has been greatly improved. From a practicality perspective, Yaris Cross will obviously be a better choice for me though.
@@kinocchio If your country has good tax rules, I'd go for the new Skoda Citigo/VW UP electric, if they cost roughly the same as the Yaris. The old Citigo/UP with petrol engine is super reliable and cheap to service, can't imagine the new electric being worse.
Owned original 1st gen Yaris and 3 years ago decided to go with Mazda 2 instead last gen Yaris. One of the best decisions I've ever made. This new Yaris finally looks like massive step forward. Best review channel, cheers!
Thank you for the review. Once again a thorough report. Your easygoing way of explaining cars is impressing. After quite a few videos from you I am convinced no one does it better.
Toyota in Japan announced fuel consumption this car (maybe little different figure in your country), less than 3L/100km in city : 36.9km/L outside city : 39.8km/L highway : 33.5km/L
Great review Thomas, but you forgot one big change I noticed it just in your video: it's now a electric handbrake, so that's why there is more room to put away things. That's nice too!
Great review as usual. Getting new Yaris this week (April 2021). Fantastic town car with capability on the motorway. So quiet and smooth when in EV mode. My wife who is a nervous driver with new cars took to this really quickly. Glad she's getting it. Thinking seriously of Corolla estate to replace my golf estate also.
I have a 2015 yaris and I have next week appointment on Toyota garage to drive the new one 😅 I'm so excited probably after I see this video I will exchange mine for new one wish me luck 😅
I've been waiting for a proper review of this car. I really like the design and it sounds like Toyota has done a really good job. I'd prefer it in a single colour I think (Thomas Blue perhaps), but otherwise, really good.
I have great respect for Toyota for having a hybrid lineup. The major weak point of Toyotas is interior design, though. It’s always too gray, black, plasticky. Although this Yaris has improved when looking at the lines, it’s again the materials that hold it back. Nice to finally see CarPlay and Android Auto. Great review.
I also made a few test drives and was very enthousiast. Toyota here in Holland now also offers a so called FlexLease contract which is very interesting. So I ordered the Yaris Hybrid Dynamic.
A couple of misconceptions: 'B' is a driving mode which increases engine braking. You perceive more braking in this mode than 'D', but the additional braking is not going to regen. For efficiency you should always use 'D'. Also. Acceleration in PWR mode is exactly the same as in ECO mode in the scenario showed in the video. The difference in the various drive modes is the throttle mapping curve.
cracking review as usual Thomas, who else just wanted to see how Thomas was going to fit himself into a Yaris. Can we vote for a Smart Four-Two sitting challenge next please??? 😁😁😁😁
As always great points... If you could change the camera aperture according to the interior colors and lighting it would be fine (often too dark 16m.40s.). Thanks
Looks like a very cool little car. Yaris in that sense is a bit more different than other small cars too is that its used as a WRC car then thats why it might have those more angles in places you wouldnt excpect. the GR version of it looks sick too!
I've been trying this car all through Italy and I drove 200k and it filled up with 9 liters. I've been trying it everywhere and the gas gauge didn't even budge!
Hi Thomas, it appears the UK version will NOT get maps, only Apple car play/android auto heated seats & steering wheel. I am still trying to find out if we do get the adjustable boot height floor.
Hello Thomas ))) could you please perform test drive of new Toyota Yaris Cross or comparison between Toyota Yaris vs Toyota Yaris Cross! Thanks a lot )))
Realmente vale a pena comprar a nova versão em comparação de Yaris 2017-2019? Sobre a questão de valorização? Is is really worth to buy the new yaris used instead of the old facelift version? The old has lost a bit more value.
I had a prior _Yaris_ model and the handling felt somewhat like you were sat over the front axle. It would understeer, and when cornering, felt as though - if you were, say, bearing left - the right-side, front tyre and wheel had to cope with more _Newtonian_ physics than it was truly capable of. (And, vice versa.) So, I imagine that, sitting further back in the cabin will give the vehicle more of a 'big car' feel, vis-a-vis the handling.
Nice looking car. My Mum needs a new car so this is a possibility. I noticed in your reviews you never talk about safety equipment such as the number and location of air bags for example, N-Cap crash test results for a vehicle or service intervals and costs. Is it something you could possibly do in the future? Thanks for your review.
I think the design is much better as compared to prius which is the ugliest looking design. Thomas great job for doing this review. They have improved a lot of stuff but the only drawback for me are the boot size and the infotainment system. Thomas please can you also do Honda Jazz hybrid review as well please?
I've owned the design model for 1.5 years. Toyota hybrids are perfect if you want to look at EV but don't have the infrastructure to support .e.g live in block of flats so unable to charge. This model is better in every way to the previous generations , handling is good , ride comfort good (mine has smaller wheels) , noise suppression ok but again better then previous generations. Over the summer months I average 75 mpg and I've had journeys over 100 mpg. However in winter this does fall back a lot seeing 55 to 65 mpg. Rear legroom seems smaller than previous gen and paint seems to chip really easy , I have blue metallic and I note Toyota has withdrawn this colour...maybe issue with paint? Radar cruise control...never had it before and I initially wished they offered a model that was cheaper without all the tech kit, however I'm converted and wouldn't be without it now. I've owned premium German brand cars and honestly they are no better you are just paying for the badge. I'd give this car a solid 8/10. And most importantly - no issues at all in 1.5 years.
Nice video..just one suggestion, use lighter coloured pants while reviewing dark coloured interiors..makes it easier to view the legroom of the rear seats
Excellent car review, clear explanations on most topics - I only miss a real central city drive test where the fuel efficiency and driving agility will be most at work on the hybrid function. Thanks anyway !
Hi Thomas , can you please tell me how noisy is the car on 100 km/h ? My main driving will be on the highway at this speed . And also the fuel consumption at this speed ... thank you 🙂
The EV button is to let you push it more before the engine kicks in at low speeds. Without EV mode engine will start half way the EV meter, with EV mode will go up to 3/4
The second airport barriers open only when first one closes. Also there's 30km/h zone till 21:07 :) you could get speeding ticket for 150€ going 50 in 30 zone :) BTW in Belgium speeding over 7km/h is already 60€, so be careful. In Germany I think it's only 20€
Dear Autogefühl-Team, thank you very much for the Yaris HSD presentation - but just as a bold question: could you test the Clio E-Tech as well? ^^ I'm quite curious and would love to see those competiting hybrid vehilcles in close comparision to each other.
I have a 2016 D4D. The other day I drove from Bath to Leeds and achieved 100mpg (admittedly with a tail wind). I don't understand why hybrids can't touch this and why diesels have been discontinued.I won't be buying another which is sad as the chain link engines in the diesels go forever (my previous one did over 200k and I never had an issue with it)
Hi, I quite like the new Yaris, and seems like they managed to ged rid off few details I am not very satisfied with previous generation first facelift (until 2017) (now 2 front wipers, rear wiper centered in correct position now, more decent and effective arm rest between front seats, bottle holders in rear side doors). But I want to ask, if there is some roof light for rear passengers? Because in previous generation there was nothing and I just missed it there everytime I wanted to take something from my bag or so. In one video from Asia I think few months ago there was a roof light in the interior, but it can be specific only for certain Asian markets and not for Europe. Thanks in advance for the answer. Nice review by the way,
Always appreciate the reviews on Japanese cars. The amount of tech in that car is pretty cool. The infotainment is a bit disappointing, same story with my Japanese car. Great review again. Thanks Autogefühl team.👍🏽😁
Toyota hybrid B mode operation does not increase regeneration, is traditional engine braking. for example, when descending a mountain when the battery is full and the brakes need to be cool..

B mode does less recuperation because it engages engine braking.
In D mode you break less (but recuperate more), but you need to press break pedal way more and use actual discs (so they can get hot).
Oh not again, reviewer gets B mode wrong. Thanks all commenters above to clarify this. Toyota really should educate the reviewers more.

Remember how Japanese electronics went from pioneering to irrelevant ? Wait and see the next episode...
Great car for the city use. Always a good Thomas team production!
I paid attention to the other drivers after reading your comment and didn't see anyone trying to have a look though. Haha
This is for people that need a reliable car.
The hybrid? Naah
Toyota is king, the old Hiace and Hilux are legends.
This or i10?
@@kinocchio If your country has good tax rules, I'd go for the new Skoda Citigo/VW UP electric, if they cost roughly the same as the Yaris. The old Citigo/UP with petrol engine is super reliable and cheap to service, can't imagine the new electric being worse.
@@kinocchio I10 is from another lower class. I20 is the competitor They are also reliable. No towbar for I10 or Aygo.
Owned original 1st gen Yaris and 3 years ago decided to go with Mazda 2 instead last gen Yaris. One of the best decisions I've ever made. This new Yaris finally looks like massive step forward. Best review channel, cheers!
Thanks keep following 🙏
This new Yaris does look good, but I still think I prefer my 2018 Mazda 2. Waiting to see what Mazda do with the next 2.
What is the fuel consumption with the Mazda 2 in town?
Good overview of the vehicule. I have to taste it on the highway to make my mind about it but what you just told us sounds very nice.
Beautiful! Stunning! I own the one from 2009 1.4 Diesel and I'm quite surprised with the performance. But this one is just beautiful! 🙌🏻
Finally been waiting for this one! preordered one! :D
are you happy with auto
"Use The Force". Great Review and detail Thomas.
😎
Thank you for the review. Once again a thorough report. Your easygoing way of explaining cars is impressing. After quite a few videos from you I am convinced no one does it better.
Welcome! Glad to see you here
Toyota in Japan announced fuel consumption this car (maybe little different figure in your country), less than 3L/100km
in city : 36.9km/L
outside city : 39.8km/L
highway : 33.5km/L
Thats the official figure, unrealistic to reach
@@autogefuehl this is " WLTC " , So all car manufactures same conditions. just good reference for finding new car.
One of the best presenters around ..thanks
You want to know what i think?.......I think you're the best Autojournalist this wold can offer!! Greetings Aus Holland...
Bedankt 🙏
Great review Thomas, but you forgot one big change I noticed it just in your video: it's now a electric handbrake, so that's why there is more room to put away things. That's nice too!
Your reviews are the best Thomas! Keep up the good work!😎👍
😊
Great review as usual. Getting new Yaris this week (April 2021). Fantastic town car with capability on the motorway. So quiet and smooth when in EV mode. My wife who is a nervous driver with new cars took to this really quickly. Glad she's getting it. Thinking seriously of Corolla estate to replace my golf estate also.
Love this review
This may be the best value car of the decade
I have a 2015 yaris and I have next week appointment on Toyota garage to drive the new one 😅 I'm so excited probably after I see this video I will exchange mine for new one wish me luck 😅
Na proefrit gelijk één besteld.. 😅
Looking back at this now in 2024 I love my Yaris I have the GR line version & it's still brilliant 👏🏻 a proper go kart for the street 👍🏻
Liking the new design
I've been waiting for a proper review of this car. I really like the design and it sounds like Toyota has done a really good job. I'd prefer it in a single colour I think (Thomas Blue perhaps), but otherwise, really good.
Awesome review and very informative as always Thomas. Thank you.
👌
Wow! Yaris suddenly got cool! Looks fantastic.
Out of the Jazz Hybrid and the Yaris Hybrid, which do you prefer ? I'm considering both.
Tomas. Yes, great review, but did you like the car? Does the car inspire enthusiasm? Is the car just a sop to efficiency in motion without emotion?
Wow! So quick! Great review as always!
Great review of an interesting car. I wonder how it compares to the new Honda Jazz?
Thanks 🙏 Actually B increases regen at low speeds and at normal speeds the engine activates indeed
@@autogefuehl Then Toyota has to update their Owner's Manual for the car... but that will not be the first time.
Thank you Tomas, a good in depth review.
interior is much better :o
Agreed, But rear seating, not so much. Really loved the car, but this point raises some concerns.
Just ordered the yaris excel in white
cracking review as usual Thomas, who else just wanted to see how Thomas was going to fit himself into a Yaris. Can we vote for a Smart Four-Two sitting challenge next please??? 😁😁😁😁
🤗
Love the looks! Will definitely buy one as our second car.
As always great points...
If you could change the camera aperture according to the interior colors and lighting it would be fine (often too dark 16m.40s.). Thanks
2:11 Cool Design! No more boring car.
I average in city driving easily 4,4l/100 km with a Rav4 AWD hybrid premium no stress 🙂
Regarding the rear seats room Thomas, major improvement on my old GT86 had 😁
Hello Thomas ))) could you please perform test drive of new Toyota Yaris Cross or comparison between Toyota Yaris vs Toyota Yaris Cross! Thanks a lot )))
Realmente vale a pena comprar a nova versão em comparação de Yaris 2017-2019? Sobre a questão de valorização? Is is really worth to buy the new yaris used instead of the old facelift version? The old has lost a bit more value.
Surprised you could fit your 1.81m frame onto the front driver’s seat and still be quite comfortable, Thomas! Great review, as always.
Is the Corolla worth the extra relative to this?
Another very informative review, I like the way you present in the video.
Looks ok. Had a 2006 Yaris 999cc engine. It was fun and light 2 drive. Wish we still have it.
(And, vice versa.)
So, I imagine that, sitting further back in the cabin will give the vehicle more of a 'big car' feel, vis-a-vis the handling.
Best car I have ever owned. 68mpg in urban and motorways. Amazing car.
Thanks 🙏 will do!
This is how reviews should be done
Thanks 🙏 feel free to share!
And also the fuel consumption at this speed ... thank you 🙂
Quite cool, the new Yaris has a centre airbag. Great review btw
The front reminds me of the ford fiesta ST
Awesome review as always! But I think it’s a bit dark filming the interior on a parking lot
Would be nice to compare it to the 1.5L 120hp petrol version !
The roof creases are inherited from the 2nd gen Prius and other models that help with aerodoinamics. The design is polarizing but I like it.
The EV button is to let you push it more before the engine kicks in at low speeds. Without EV mode engine will start half way the EV meter, with EV mode will go up to 3/4
The second airport barriers open only when first one closes.
Also there's 30km/h zone till 21:07 :) you could get speeding ticket for 150€ going 50 in 30 zone :)
BTW in Belgium speeding over 7km/h is already 60€, so be careful. In Germany I think it's only 20€
Horrible! 😂
Nice review!
Would love a 1440P/4k 60FPS resolution video.
I don't understand why hybrids can't touch this and why diesels have been discontinued.I won't be buying another which is sad as the chain link engines in the diesels go forever (my previous one did over 200k and I never had an issue with it)
Excellent review, Thomas!!
Thanks 🙏
Did they accidentaly melt the front?
Would you choose the Hybrid or the manual petrol ?
Toyota hybrid B mode operation does not increase regeneration, is traditional engine braking. for example, when descending a mountain when the battery is full and the brakes need to be cool..
Yes at normal speeds, at slow speeds it just increases regen
