Thank you for posting this. I recall back in the 90's some friends were looking into doing business in Russia. They were small players so they could not be risk adverse with out insurance and could not get insurance to close deals, mostly because of Russian corruption. It was not uncommon for a train to lose box cars between cities. (It is still not uncommon for Canadians travelling to Russia to play in the K but their stick supply does not make it off the plane. Even coming home in the summer to visit family it was understood that anything you wanted to be 100 percent sure made it back to Canada had to be carry on.) There were other business issues since at the time if you dealt with Russia you could not do business in the USA and some had contracts with companies that had USA parent companies. But the interesting long term effect will be if insurers are not willing to finance deals, buying FOB Russia becomes way too risky. This only serves to make China stronger since if Russia has a smaller market for its raw materials then China has an unfair advantage in the Global economy by saying we will take your raw materials at 50 cents on the dollar and a war torn Russia will have no choice and the USA has to impose tariffs on China and then etc.. I do not envy the people trying to walk the Russia-Ukraine tightrope.

The facts about the war in terms of deaths, destruction, captured Russian vehicles remain in dispute, but what is not disputable is the massive and long term damage being done to Putin and Russia by consolidated Western sanctions. After Putin's decision to unilaterally keep leased airplanes, what country would ever lease to him again?
The west is printing money like they're going out of fashion. The way things are going airplane leases will be the least of our problems in the very near future.

After Putin's decision to unilaterally keep leased airplanes, what country would ever lease to him again? No worries, the chinese airliners are waiting at the door.
I kind of like the idea of investors taking a haircut for risking their capital in Russia. It sends a very clear message to other investors that it is far from risk free. The free-market insurance companies will ultimately set the price on taking that risk. I am personally delighted that Russia is pricing itself out of the world community.
ANY company that would lease jets to Russia, KNEW or SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, the very high risk of confrontation and the subsequent jeopardy to ANY leased assets or ANY financial transaction, contract or loan would result. NO government "bailout" for companies supporting the enemy: this enemy or ANY enemy likely to be.
What are you smoking dude? Nobody knew that Brandon and Ursula will ban Russian aircraft from flying over EU and US. The leasing companies will get their planes back when they have settled the breach of contract fines. Reporting half truths is worse than outright lies.
The West did not think it through properly before slapping mass sanctions, following USA blindly, but repurcussions for EU are different. Russia will survive, there are always companies willing to break sanctions.
Maybe if America had keep it's promises to Russia not to push NATO right up to the Russian border 25 years ago, this wouldn't be going on. And build Bio-Labs too.
The only option is for the Russian government to invest in Tupolev to start developing their own passenger jets again. Then the dependency will be over for Russia. There are also no problems with spare parts. Russia may be self-sufficient from the West, but it's just barely staying afloat. Russia is a resource-rich country and has everything it needs to be self-sufficient.
And think that the new Russian generation that are used to western style of life will go backward to the soviet life style, interesting. Having your money and assets frozen abroad wont make thing better neither.
Tupolev had a horrific safety record (look it up, it borders on comical if it was not tragic). They will never get International approval to fly outside of Russia. They will have to confine their crashes to internal flights.
First, the sanctions will not be lifted in a hundred years. Secondly, russia will not be in the mood to do business with the west anymore. They will close their border to the west and focus on trading with the east instead.
Russia will never get another lease or be able to buy another foreign built aircraft unless they return or pay for the aircraft impounded. The aircraft they keep will only fly in Russia if they can even repair or maintain them. The resolution will not happen until Putin is removed from power.
The relationship between Russia and the West is probably over for ever. Putin is not going anywhere, and his successor will follow similar policies. Pro western individuals in Russia have reached end of the road.

You're buying into bs, the reason Cuba claims to have the best doctors in the world is because their government eased what it takes to become a doctor so that they can produce thousands of doctors that rakes in billions for said government. This places Russia on the naughty list for the leasing companies. If you think a bad credit score is bad, try theft of rental equipment on your credit report. Lease was not renewed and they are keeping the aircraft? Not a smart move for your future, Russia.
We believe this move is sensible and provides us with a much better future than being a resource colony with no voice in international affairs. There is no point in worrying about our reputation with Western companies. These companies are too dependent on the Washington administration. They do whatever they are ordered to do. Now they were ordered to leave the Russian market, and they obeyed, tomorrow they will be ordered to insure market risks in Russia from 0%, and they will obey again.
@@milkman713 My State up here in Canada has a pretty good educational system. What you fail to gather from the article is that the effects of this are going to be long term. And force China and Russia closer together. This is not good for the future markets.
@@johnnychinstrap You're right. Putin apparently miscalculated how beholden to China he'd end up when the dust settled. His military's poor performance isn't showing him to be at peer or near peer level with China. Russia is going to end up another Chinese dependency. While, the aircraft already have navigation databases, the changeable, localized flight pattern info and location beacon info will become obsolete.
But, given that they are banned from most of the world, and Russia can 'freeze' the navigation markers within Russia, that may be a moot issue.

It depends. If they say it was a special operation, they can probably get it recovered
The only option is for the Russian government to invest in Tupolev to start developing their own passenger jets again. Then the dependency will be over for Russia. There are also no problems with spare parts. Russia may be self-sufficient from the West, but it's just barely staying afloat.
