Thank you John!
To see other skilled tradesmen truly care about solving the client's issues and go the extra mile like you did by adding that extra catch basin and not "pocketing the extra" is a wonderful thing to see. Shawn your work is top notch and honest. Wish you, your team and family all the best in the New Year.
Thank you Lew. you can't fake drainage work. Either the flooding is gone or it's not. I knew I had to add that catch basin and I'm glad we did.
By raising the concrete against the bldg you also get a smoother transition with those door sills. 🤩 The down hill curb turned out real nice too. Love that you do “in the rain” after footage.
👍👍
Nice one Shawn, another solid, professional job with good results. Great to see the concrete guys working hard, turning it round quickly and delivering a great job every time !
thank you S! More videos coming shortly.
@@GCFD I am eagerly awaiting you Sean, but if we are lucky enough, copious rains will come to see your excellent results !!!!
Hello from the Netherlands .
as a true Zeeuw (province) and Dutchman,
as Water People it is so beautiful and fantastic to see that there are still other people who have the insight into how water runs and determines its own way and how you can steer that in a natural way to the right place .
thanks for the video Shawn. Sincerely, Hollandduck
Thanks for your comments and support as always Hollandduck!
@@GCFD
you're welcome Shawn
I love how you saved work from summer and fall to get us through winter. I also love the time lapse with the pan on the camera love your videos
thank you Seadoo! I also just love that panning video. I think it is soo cool.
I was going to comment about the pan time lapse and just noticed i already did. F-ing love it.
That old concrete would make good rip rap
It got recycled
When you say Harvey’s on the job it’s like that scene in pulp fiction. “Oh you bringin the wolf? Shiiit. That’s all you had to say!”
hahah for sure. He still works circles around all of us.
Great job to solve this problem. Great watching all the people involved solving this water issue. Breaking concrete, adding catch basins, correcting the angle away from the building, laying out the new concrete and following up with the video seeing the water flow like you planned it. Just great work. Looks like all involved enjoy their work.
Hats off to the cement guys, too.
Buen echo.
Thank you Victor!
Great job Shawn! That was a really big job you and Harvey's crew work well together. I know the owner is happy to have the flooding resolved.
Yes they are an awesome crew to work with. They seem to like me too. 👍
I had a mouthful of coffee when you pointed out the green wheelbarrow being ready to go.
I damn near shot it out my nose! 😅
Ah the joy of seeing you fix others dumb mistakes, and see the perfect result, that is sooooo rewarding, watched this after having a really bad day at work, and now I am happy inside again, good job!
That's great news! Happy day!
looks like a case of spending 3000 three times to avoid spending 6000 once.
For sure!
Don’t get it, unless it’s immediate, save the cash for a period of time till ya get the 6,000 (in this case) and spend it to get it done right. But I’ve noticed though job experience that the people who are higher up the ladder want the smaller less expensive fixes then spending one time to get it right.
I’ve also learned though doing so and working manual labor that giving water, soda, sports drinks or lunch to people. They’ll do a little extra or just be happier working in your project or if there’s an issue there willing to fix it.
I've watched a lot of your videos Shawn and would have to say THIS IS ONE OF YOUR BEST!! Happy New Year from Townsville, Australia.
Thank you! I have been trying to increase the quality of these videos for sure.
Something about the way the guys pour and spread that concrete is mesmerizing. A superlative job! And the walk-though to check the drainage is always fun. Thanks Shawn!
Looks like art to me!
Thank you Sheena. I just love that panning time-lapse head that I have for the concrete work.
What a concept water flows down hill to the lowest point. 🤣😂🤣
I agree. I don't see how it's that difficult, lol.
Your concrete guys are awesome, you can tell they take pride in their work and went the extra mile to put in that curb all hand formed.
I agree. they are the best for sure!
Please pray for me and my family we got covid right now all prayers are needs right now thank you
👍I hope you feel better soon

Good idea caulking the gaps . Tree roots grow into those gaps and block the pipes plus dirt ingress as the roots grow larger. The whole problem stems back to the Building is sited too low up against a hill in the first place . Not sure why Council regs over there allow this to happen all the time . The Blame Goes back to blue prints and drainage Engineering plans at approval stage
I agree with the hill situation. I think a lot of these places are built upon because they can build and make money, even though they shouldn't or should place better drainage measures.
big job but thats what it needs. how did they build that building next to a hill with no swale in between?? maybe it filled in over time. lots of maintenence needed oof oak trees. schedule 40 8 inch wow! interesting job. glad you're there to fix things.
i had two plumbers tell me my iron sewer pipes were all tore up and causing backups. had two plumbers run cameras neither could find any tore up pipes. asked one plumber if he thought it was the vent. he said no, because the toilet was flushing. if there was a vent problem then it wouldnt flush. i put the hose on the vent and cleared the vent. now it works again. GO FIGURE. plumber x told me i had to dig up my cement floor to replace my sewer pipe. yeah. $20,000 to do that under my kitchen too? no way! always get a second opinion! or third. or learn it from youtube haha.
WATER FLOWS DOWNHILL shirt when??
Great story Apples! And yes, common sense says to check the vent, even if the toilet is flushing. Start with the easy, obvious stuff. If you had spent 20k your drains still wouldn't have worked!
As already commented, couldn't believe no rebar in that slab. Great job though. I'm sure the company that got ghosted ended up getting a better job done hiring you.
I feel the same way Ray. Coming from Colorado where you can't put enough rebar in to no rebar needed. It's strange.
Same at least some welded wire
@@GCFD why no rebar needed here? Is that just code there? Surprised too
Gravity rules...that's the law. Period. Good luck trying to get water to flow uphill...you will loose every time.
Hahah for sure. A couple of notable examples of water flowing uphill are the waves at the beach and transpiration through leaves.
Shawn you’re brilliant man as a plumber in the commercial industry I’ve done tons of drainage outdoors and now I’m on my own with my own company it’s amazing to see there’s good guys out there that understand hydro mechanics like you do I get into it a lot around here with landscapers and other drainage companies that build disaster after disaster especially the burrito wrapped French drains to name one lol keep it up
Thanks Robert! I see the same thing here. The burrito wrap is even in the NC landscaper's handbook! I couldn't believe it.
Filter fabric works great. You just have to find the brands that work well. Dude, even the DOT uses it. But ya, I certainly agree that most companies do not do good drainage work.
@@High-Flow-Drainage-Solutions lol the dot isn’t the greatest branch in the world also u can use filter fabric I didn’t say that I actually
Do usually line the bottom
Of the French drain with fabric so silt doesn’t climb up into the French drain piping holes but a full burrito wrap
Is a waste
@@roberthernandez1985 well, It says a lot if the dot trusts it to protect billions of dollars of highway. But plus, I know it works beacause I use it.
@@High-Flow-Drainage-Solutions it works it’s just slightly restrictive to flow and for what it is the pipe stays just as clean depending on the soil type
Great video and great job! After all these eons water still flows downhill. It's amazing the number of people that miss that fact.
It's amazing the number of drainage contractors that miss it too Greg! haha
I agree with your assessment. It is always far better to prevent the water from getting anywhere near the building. It is good to have both active (drains) and passive (sloping) systems in case the drains get clogged. I would add mesh to the sidewalk. Helps prevent unwanted cracking. But would require a pumper.
👍👍
Oh oh, I see another toy you need. Seems like you need a pipe cam with a built in light.
for sure! They sell them too - sewer inspection cameras
Great job solving the problem. You should create a master class on drainage. It's disappointing to see all the jobs you have to fix when other people don't do it the right way. People need to learn to call you first because then they get the job done the right way the first time.
Thank you Michael! First and last lesson: water flows downhill (:
I was impressed by your workers input and your acceptance of them doing so. So often the person in charge at a work place does not allow that.
Everyone on my team is a valued professional and I welcome their input. Sometimes I start telling them what the job is and they'll say, what about doing it this way, and I reply, yes that's how we're doing it....now.
@@GCFD This answer, I really wish more people could think like that. You don't just hire muscles, you hire people with skills and experience, and their input is worth listening to.
Really enjoyed the great educational work from you guys mate. Loved the concrete work and great personalities too. You also threw in some awesome innovative camera work which was a treat… shots from the drone, in drains and even up the concrete shute. Bloody ripper of a program. Great work mate.
Love the project! Agree: very important to add that catch basin. That location needed one due to its low point position. I sure like those catch basins. So pitiful that all that expense went into the first project establishing those catch basins with no fall away from the FFE. Smart to never put drains against the foundation. Great project.
Thank you Alan! I'm, glad you enjoyed the project - Shawn
It's probably been close to 8 months since I last watched one of your videos and I have to say I'm loving the outro. Time to catch up on everything I've missed.
Thank you Jimmy! I've been trying to improve the quality of these videos since so many people are watching them now.
Those concrete breakers look so good
I can’t wait to get one for my 463 bobcat 👌
Harvey's is like 20 years old. 👍
These long uploads are awesome 👌 🤟.
Thank you! I always wonder about the length being too long. Thanks for sharing.
I’m a big fan of yours in the UK. I’ve been following you around. two and a half years now and without doubt, this has been your best video in every way.. very professional. Keep ‘em coming 👏👏👏
Thank you Brian! This was one of my last videos with my old Garmin virb action cameras. I now have gopro 10s at 4k. I wish I had made the switch sooner. More good stuff is OTW!
Did you have an isolation joint between the foundation and the new concrete that would allow you to install a self leveling joint sealant along the perimeter of the building?
Yes I thought about doing that but there doesn't seem to be any more problems.
@@GCFD Give it time.
Were you able to reuse any of those channel drains?
they are currently stacked at my house. I need to either sell them as used or install them as used.
The concrete looks like crap. Usually video hides a lot of stuff but not on here. I'm sure it drains just fine, but the concrete finish is sub par
How could the concrete have been improved upon? I think it's stellar!
Yeah thats a pretty rough looking sidewalk
As of date I have watched this twice - this second time I am even more impresed with the work done than I was the first time. The little things that matter came across even better.
Thank you Jeremy! If you missed the premier, Gome passed away and this was the job he was on. So I included a lot of chatter from him.
That guy in Florida would’ve put in 20’ of Eazy Flow with a couple of catch basins and called it a day 🤣🤣🤣
I do like integrated concrete solutions!
Lol - it’s only a million loads with that toy wheel barrow
Hahah for sure! Luckily it has a no-flat wheel on it.
Bad drainage is a homeowners nightmare, you ride in there like the Lone Ranger on a concrete buggy to save the day. Well done Shawn and all involved!
Haha thank you!
You did a very nice job, but I just have to shake my head that after spending so much money to fix the issue, the owners aren't smart enough to keep the drains cleaned...SMH...
👍
Amazing video Shawn, love the drone footage, that's awesome .. must be amazing knowing your work will be here 50-100 years from now serving the next generation of people.
Thank you! I hope things are still working after that long!
I’ve never seen a broom used like that on concrete…. Made some really odd looking finish
That's called a broom finish.
I broom finish concrete all the time I’ve just never seen anyone broom that way with the back and forth scrubbing motion
With all your concrete work, do you have a standard company name logo stamp w/date to mark the job? I have seen these in a lot of concrete jobs in a town I used to live in when walking around.
No but that's a really cool idea. I will check into it.
That is horrible concrete work. Sad, but true. Find a new contractor for your mud. It looks like little grade schoolers did the work. I really like how all the grates, especially the newest one, were locked in by the concrete. Nothing like a chipped edge on new mud.
Also, when you broom… it’s akin to painting. Keep the strokes in one direction.
Hey Sean, glad to see you up and running. Healthy,Happy New Year……Bobby L
Thank you Bobby! You too!
Shawn, another awesome job and attention to detail. I liked that you dropped the catch basin, many guys would have left it on top of the sand rock.
They were not thrilled with me that we needed to lower it but no one complained. It's great working with quality people.
Magnificent job well done Shawn, Harvey's crew did a wonderful job as well you guys really work well together keep up the good work and thank you being a decent and upstand man the world needs more like you. Shout out to Ronald and Jeremy God bless you.
Thank you Anthony! More videos coming soon.
I almost feel like you need a segway screen and music at the 8:18 mark something like: "Now During This Weeks Shawn's Animal Corner! We have the X animal!" Then Back to the show as an outro or something like that.
haha the next video as a couple of animal cameos in it!
Shaw, I really interesting, educational and entertaining video. Thanks!
And please do not be afraid to repeat stuff you probably have repeated a lot in the previous videos you have made. Stuff like "water want to flow downhill", and "you never ever want water flowing to the house". It really adds to your videos when you point out these principles.
Thanks for the tips. I feel like I'm repeating myself a lot but it still fits into the overall video.
? Is the concrete reinforced? With fiberglass? If not my experience is that with that thickness of concrete you should be reinforced otherwise with reinforcement mesh or rebar. If not, it will most likely crack. Laying concrete directly against a wooden structure like this against the stairs, even though it is impregnated, will rot. Sooner or later. Feel free to explain how you thought. Maybe I should learn something new. For my goal is to learn a new thing every day.
Rebar isn't needed and rarely used here for nonstructural concrete. The reason is we have no frost line, impermeable clay subsoils with no subsurface water, and no bentonite.
Another excellent video with great explanation all the way down to the core :) it’s like addiction watching your videos and learning from it. Question…Channel drain not a good idea next to foundation, slope of the concrete away from house should take care of the water…however, can you have both? Ie both channel drain (next to foundation in this video) + slope of concrete away from house?
You want the channel drain to be at the low point to collect the water and allow it to drain away. You never want to place a drain at a higher point otherwise the water that doesn't get in will pool in the low point. Great question👍
Sir you missed a point in doing it your way leaving out a HUGE bonus. IF the new drains you just cleaned out ever clogged, the new lower area makes a safety catch basin. How many gallons would be pooled in this basin before reaching the foundation. Will add a nice safety margin plus a advance notice if you see pooling in the basin, clean the pipes.
Great point. that's the buffering capacity of the system. 👍
I think your new lime green wheelbarrow was overkill for the job hahaha
hahah for sure! Luckily it had no-flat tires on it.
I like you content, only thing I recommend your inside pipe shots is a very powerful flashlight attachment that can operate by extended thumb switch. only because those are always dark shots you give.
Great suggestion William! Thank you
41:36 Whats that dude on the left doing? The yellow bucket guy...
She's cleaning up the little bit of plastic left in the concrete where we hung plastic to protect the siding from splashing concrete. She also cleaned up the catch basin lids.
@@GCFD Ahh ok, I thought she was crack sealing or something, was gunna ask what the process was and what product u guys use.
Nice job as usual. I would be a little nervous about that hillside and water flowing under the new concrete. They need a retaining wall and some leaf maintenance. Otherwise it will back up with leaves pretty soon.
Water flowing under the new concrete is a concern. We make sure to compact the soil very well with our finish grading for that reason. The concrete is also functioning as a basin to hold water in case the catch basins get covered in leaves, similar to how a wetland works. I hope they keep up with clearing the debris.
How much does a job like this cost the property owner? Seems like a profitable business model once you’re up and running and have all the tools
👍
Quite sad to see so much work getting removed with a jackhammer. If the company would have done a messy job, it might be easier, but it seems like they did a proper job - just in the wrong spot. Still, if the drains get overflowed, could't this be solved with a "faster water removal" instead? Like adding a sump basin and a pump to that drain system?
Adding pumps could help to temporarily solve the problem. If the pumps failed, the power went out, or they were overwhelmed the building would flood again. I needed a solution that worked better with more and more water, worked with no power, and had a buffering capacity away from the foundation. This was it for me. Great points to consider doc!
all good work, but do damp/wet down the base prior to pouring your concrete, it strops the mix from drying out too fast and causing cracks..
Great tip!
They make rubber saddles for sewer connections that are much better that the hack nipple glue sealant job. The saddles are $25
Send a link for a 8x4 saddle.
Anytime I buy a hat like that, I make sure to buy two. Cause when you shit in one, you always need another one to cover it up with. They work exceptionally well in this manner
I never considered that Casey! Sounds pretty good.
Water wants to go to the lowest point? Imagine that! Next you'll be saying gravity is a real thing! Whaddaya know!
Haha wait until you see this project we are working on now. Another company installed timbers in a retaining wall to stop an apt flooding. Anyone could have seen that wouldn't work.
Wtf where the smart level for all the water percentages according to code .?? Fucking torpedo level wtf
There's no code when you're trying to save the foundation from all the flooding it's got. We go full bubble all the way. 👍👍👍
The work you had done looks 100 times better!
thank you Jimmy!
I had a pet Millipede as a kid (About the size of a Cigar) - they make surprisingly good pets, and are great for the soil if you're gardening! They do love sweet fruits and veggies - anything they can find rotting on the ground. Melon rinds were my Millipede's favorite dish.
What was his name?
Excellent video and what a job. Great work between GCFD and Harvey's team to get that large area marked and poured. Looks like it is working like a dream as well - but maybe the homeowner will be best off investing just a little more in a leaf blower 😅 Cheers Shawn, looking forward to the next one already.
Yes those leaves need to be removed!! Grrrrrr
are you trying to recoup their money with an ad break every 3.5 minutes? JFC
I'm not really sure how that works.
But is it water from hill go under that edge and under the concrete they created,,, Should you put also a drain pipe with holes next to this concrete edge and only then pour earth to cover the edge to collect water that came down from hill
No, we used a soil with a high clay content against the new concrete so water will flow over it and onto the concrete. There is no way the water can hold on that hill and percolate down.
Nice job, but why are you not using any mesh in the concrete or is it fibre concrete. Without mesh, it's bound to crack
Not needed in our area with our subsoils and climate. 👍
In terms of UA-cam vids, that was a cut above. Congratulations.
Thank you Ian!
hmm i could have swore that dude didnt speak any english in the beginning of the vid ....
Haha. He's certainly not Country Corey!

Great job Shawn!
Thank you!
Is there a reason the concrete guys didnt put any control joints in the concrete?
I asked this before point of them cutting the control joints with the saw,... never seen someone cut them the hard way, good to know.
We usually use a green saw for the joints but we didn't have enough space here.
Good to see you care about the local ecology, that's a kind of professionalism that contractors don't tend to think about, no quick money in it
👍
Where is the rebar or wire mesh?

another stellar job Shaun and couldnt think of a better result. I had several videos to watch when i got home but yours as always was the first I got into. True professional
Wow thank you! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Thanks for the millipede minute; that had subscribe to the video written all over it
Hahah even though I mispoke and meant to say two PAIRS of legs per body segment. Doh!
Did you by any chance add fiberglass fibers, to concrete ? I noticed no wire.
Yes we do occasionally use fiber. Wire is not needed in our area for non-structural concrete.
That the worst concrete job I've ever seen the bloke with the broom needs to learn how to use it properly.
Man I have to disagree. I think it came out awesome.
At 41:35 - I'm really curious what that worker on the left is doing.
Pulling up and tape and plastic left over from the plastic we hung on the building.
Great job! I like your videos because you show results in the rain!
It must be nice to be able to get an experience concrete crew together when you need it.
They are the best. Harvey borrows the concrete buggy from me and sometimes I operate it on their jobs. Always a fun time.
Real nice job. Now the building people need to keep it working properly by keeping the leaves cleaned up to not clog the inlet grates Lol
For sure!!!
Nice to see that you don’t believe in half measures to fix problems.
No way. You can't fake drainage solutions either. Either the flooding stops or not.
Were is the wire or rebar?maybe i dont know what im saying but dont u need to put something in the creat?
Rebar is not needed in our area for non-structural concrete. Strange, huh?
Why did you leave the channel drain next to the building on the other side of the building?
I left that one there because there was no water pooling near it. It is pointless in its location and there was no reason to remove it.
Another great video 👍🏾
Thank you lee!
I wonder if you could have dropped in a french drain next to those catch basins? Instead of dealing with the labor-intensive concrete work?
If we had left the channel drains in place the flooding might still continue. The only 100% effective solution I know if is what we did, even though it was a very large project.
Another great job Shawn, well done.
👍 Thank you Dylan!
Why not just install another channel drain a few feet from it?
Channel drains clog up and I wanted buffering capacity by sloping the concrete away
you can still speed up film and use ambient noise only thing i hat about your videos is the music
I haven't figured out how to do that. The program I use can only match the audio pitch up to 1000% sped up and I usually do 8000%.
Just like Gate City Foundation that millipede has a leg up on the competition.
Hahah 👍
Maybe whoever built the building should not have put it at the bottom of a hill. Lol
For sure!
