- This was a very rare, somewhat after-market body effects package you could order through Chevrolet dealers for your stock Celebrity Eurosport. It didn't upgrade the engine, suspension, or brakes (didn't even have discs in the rear), but it did make your Celebrity stand apart from the rest. Apparently, special jackets, sunglasses, and gym bags could be ordered as well to compliment your Chevrolet. I remember seeing one of these at a gas station when I was about 16, and another one that whooshed past me on I-271 in Beachwood, Ohio. I literally haven't seen one since 1988.
I just love the little rear squat when they introduce the bodies. All 125 horse go.
The VR has the nicest body kit I have ever seen on any car. Very nice!

There used to be a white 1988 VR here in New Albany, IN but I have not seen it for a few years now. It was driven by an old man so he may have passed away and the car was sold at auction. It was a beautiful machine. I loved the effects. I had a regular 89 Eurosport that was a nice car as well. Thanks for sharing with us here.

Man, I have an A-Body 1990 Buick Century that I bought off my High School Auto program a year ago. I used it to get me around while working on my Fiero, but although it may be weird, I love that car. (only 87k on the odo when I got it. R12 A/C is ice cold) The Celebrity Eurosport VR is a really cool looking car for what it is. When I look at my Buick, this is exactly what I imagined ground effects would look like on it. If I ever come across one of these someday, I'm going to buy it.

Had an 'Oh, yeah!' moment seeing this because i was a GM employee back then though I was smitten with their new pickup trucks and my wife had just bought an '88 Pontiac Bonneville SE.
I really liked the Celebrity. On a business trip I'd rented a Celebrity sedan with the 4 cylinder and was pleased that it fit the bill for what I needed from a car that week. I remember being amazed at how _large_ the trunk was in that Celebrity sedan.
So basically there were no mechanical improvements at all. Just a body kit? No wonder they didn't sell many of them.

Very disappointing. They could have at least offered AWD as Pontiac did for their 6000 STE and S/E models.
The Celebrity was a nice car for its time shame that GM never kept it in production for more than 1 generation. They sold well and were everywhere throughout the 80s and even used ones were still around throughout the 90s as well. My Dad had a 1986 grey metallic sedan with matching grey cloth interior was the base car with the 2.8 V6 and the Chevy metal hubcaps was a nice car. He bought it used in 1990 and had it until 1997. Was the older style with the sealed beam headlights unfortunately even being garage kept always the rust belt ohio weather eventually got to it.
My mom had a euro VR, I didn't know it was rare. Come to think of it, I don't remember seeing any since. It rusted out and everything broke, but continued to run nontheless.
This is a car I see being a rare classic in the future once I find one I'm buying it. Could possibly be worth a lot in maybe another 30years
I've never heard of the VR. I like it in red. I think the sedan looks the best though. It's supposed to be a sporty car, but they don't even mention the powertrain. All they talk about are the cosmetics. I'm assuming it was nothing more than a V6 Celebrity with some cosmetic embelishments. Still, I like it. The 2.8L V6 was a great motor. Insanely responsive and torquey. I drove an '87 Eurosport wagon with the V6 with 237k miles and it was still incredibly strong. Go back to making good cars GM!

I love how the narrator hypes up the high tech engineering, advanced everything, euro driving experience, ect... Give me a break, it's a POS Celebrity. They were about as high tech as a $99.00 Sears push lawn mower. They should of called it the EuroCheeseBox. Are any still on the road??? Not many. Here in Miami, I haven't seen a Celebrity on the road in years.
I actually owned one of these (white 4-door model). I liked it, but it was not as nice as my first celebrity eurosport, a grey 1986 2-door model. These cars could take a lot of punishment, the v-6 virtually bullet-proof, the car could keep on running even after cosmetic things started failing on it.

I did not have a VR but I did have a Euro and I put 350,000 miles on it before I sold it for $500, I paid $1,500 10 years earlier. Great driving car and very fast especially the first few years. I drove this car like the Dukes of Hazard, and once jumped it off a ramp like embankment in the woods lol, that broke the A frame btw. Scared the crap out of the guys who were with me that day. Why was I driving through the woods? Damn shrooms I have no idea. Man was I wild back in the day
You haters really make me shake my head. IN THE DAY, this was a pretty cool car. Back in the mid 80's there really wasn't any really high performance cars affordable to regular people. This little gem might have done that.
Name me a mid 80's car that: 1. Had actual performance; 2. Looked like it was built for performance; 3. Seated 5; 4. And sold for under $15K.
All you could get was 3 of the 4 points back then. this one hit those 3 points solidly.

What you have to remember, is that many cars were underpowered in the 80s. 115 hp was enough to excite. Even some American muscle cars were down on power compared to the cars that came before them in the 70s. If you didn't have a Firebird Formula, you just had a firebird, if you didn't have a z28 IROC, you had a slightly less exciting RS, or a V6 mustang instead of the big boys

I had a couple Celebrities for demos in the early to mid 80's. They drove pretty well, but we never drove them past 6,000 miles. New cars should drive good. Even a Fiat drives ok when it's new. They have been trying to get into the US market for 50 years but never have been able to compete.
Unfortunately for the Celebrity Eurosport VRs, they weren't allowed to show up Chevys poster child the Corvette.

I drove on back in 1998 and could have got it for 1000.00 back in 1992. I could has brought a mint one for 1200 back 1998. I didn't know if these would be collectible.

Miguel Gil it is the 1988 models. The '87 was a concept car and way more rare. they made 600 of the 2-door, 1250 of the wagon, and 3500 Sedans in 88

I have a rare 84 Celebrity custom conv made Hess and Eisenhardt 2.8 v6 gets 30 mpg freeway roomy inside smooth ride excellent cornering these cars were made fun of but I love mine I switched it from carb to multiport injection from a parts car it runs like new and with some customizing is quite pretty and gets lots of compliments the build quality is also good compared to today's plastic bubbles
That's pretty cool. I've got an 86 Celebrity conv made by Hess and Eisenhardt as well. It's still got the carb in it though...

Saw a 1988 VR Celebrity (white) for sale in a Hemmings Magazine. It had under 20,000 mile on it.
the only bad thing i can say about any celebrity is where they placed the fuel lines. The were too exposed to the elements so if u droved in places that had snow, the fuel lines would rust before anything else. But other than that ive had like 3 of them and all of them drove awesome and have been great cars for cheap. Dont know why they stopped making them.

the Euro Sport VR celebrity was the rare one. They made a lot of the regular celebritys and those are the ones i had. Very good cars but again horrible placement on where the fuel lines were placed.

It's too bad Chevy didn't do anything to enhance the Eurosport VR in more of a handling, and performance aspect. I also say, hell, just because they didn't doesn't mean privateers can't. If I could find one that was in decent enough shape to do up, I yank the 3.1 or 2.8, in favor of a blown Vette v8 with upgraded electrics, and hot cams. Add some vette elements to the suspension, coil overs, dampers, bushes, and of course open the exhaust, and then you'd have an even badder ass machine....

I think this started the trend of manufacturers slapping on some plastic trim and a few decals and rebranding a bland car as a "sport" model, without any changes to suspension, brakes, engines or anything. I wonder how schooled the first tool to buy one of these "sport" models was when he went up against a real sports car.
I have a lumina z34 and id trade it for the 2 door celebrity coupe anyday......

I am ABSOLUTELY still in Love with mind.......There are only two on the road right NOW. One is mine and the another one is a elderly older man have one that's has been trying to sale it. It's a red sedan. This guy has been trying to cell this car for ever...l am "ABSOLUTELY ABSOLUTELY " IN LOVE WITH MIND 🥰🥰🥰.... The only problem is, these cars is hard to "repair".
Say if you have a accident. You will not be able to find parts. You may be able in go fo the junk yard and hope to find parts that you are looking for. My car is forty years old. Thank God my husband is a mechanic and if it has a motor he can fix it. My baby is (IMPECCABLE" . I am in Love with mine, and like me you will Love your....

Chevy was giving you body kits and suspension upgrades before you even knew you wanted them.
I do not make the difference between the coupé, the 4 doors and the station wagon ... a Dodge Aries is sexier ...

oh yeah.. the 115 horse mr2 was king of the road in 88........ I 'll give credit where it is due.. there was a SC mr2 but it was still under 150hp

yep, these caused me a lot of confusion as a little boy, trying to learn all the cars. I thought it was called a celebrity then saw eurosport on a lot of them, looked pretty decent though. Now one has to wonder why they also had the lumina car at the same time which was nearly the same size. That and the monte carlo z34 or whatever it was. GM and their redundancies . Not sure if any of you guys ever owned a Eurosport but they were the 3.1 V6. Those were terrible engines. I had the 3.1 Eurosport Lumina and 3.1 Eurosport Celebrity. Garbage engines. GM's 3800 was the best V6 GM ever made.
The Eurosport was mostly the 2.8 as the 3.1 didn't come out until '89.

Cheaply, made, poorly built crap..100k its time to bury ol' nelly.. give me a volvo or honda, Toyota, something that will get 250k with no problem
t payton Not always either. This is a common myth and pure ignorance. Any car can last over 300k miles if properly taken care of. I've seen Volvo's, Honda's, Yota's hit 100k and fall apart due to poor ownership. I've had a Celebrity with 350k miles that was always taken care of and well documented when repaired or had oil changes/tune ups. It's all in how you take care of it.
Jack Creason thats true to an extent.. but a lot of cars especially AMERICAN cars were purposely designed to break down early so that you can either pay the dealer shop to fix it ( very expensive) .. or you have to buy another car from them (money and greed was there motive)..a very clever scheme that most dont see..this was the case in the 80's american cars..pontiacs, fords, mercury and others were straight garbage..theres a reason why honda was the best selling car in america..truth be told there cars was getting double, or triple the mileage than American cars..america woke up after the auto industry in Detroit collapsed due to very low sale..foreign sales exploded, while the motor city suffered.. so bad that obama had to bail gmc and others out in order to keep them afloat..i think they learned there lesson. The American people will not settle for purposely built garbage. American cars are much more reliable now, and last longer than the garbage that used to roll of the assembly lines..
Again it all falls on how you take car of it. Even a cheaply made car can be taken care of and used way longer than it's intended life span. I got a friend who has a Yugo with 400k miles on it. Only owner. Does oil changes every 3500 miles and tune ups every year. Yugo's were made with the cheapest parts possible granted not american. I've got another friend who still drives his dads Citation. I agree that cars are built to fail like new TV's are but unlike TV's you can easily fix cars and their issues.
Jack Creason yes you can easily fix cars and there issues..but who wants to go through that? Especially when it could be avoided or minimized by purchasing a more reliable vehicle. U can fix a car with a blown motor also, but again who wants to go through that? I would rather drive a honda accord that will get 300 k with normal or very little repair issues.. chrysler 300 4 and 6 cyl. Has a very bad rep for premature break downs..especially the 4 cyl. Motor trend described the car as a very unreliable box on wheels.. i love these cars because of the body design, shape, etc..but once again there engines are very weak and cheap..in this case this is not about proper maintenance keep up .this is about very poorly built cars, maybe this is the reason Chrysler went under..because buyers started getting tired of the American garbage rolling off the assembly line..dont get me wrong, im not saying that America doesn't have the technology to build super tuff, long lasting cars, because they do, they've done it in the past..what i am saying is that they prefer not to..why sell one car every 15 years when we can increase the turn over rate by selling one every 4-7 years..wich boils down to more money..i would rather sell one good car every 10-15 years and have dedicated customers and a good name, than to sell lots of cheap cars every 5 years with unreliable, uncommitted customers any day. .thats why Chrysler went under..greed my friend..
Not really. Just because they're Honda's or Toyota's doesn't mean they'll automatically make it to those miles. You ask any owner that has had one get to 250k or higher and I'll bet money they took care of it. I'll bet money they took care of it. Even a little bit of TLC is enough. IF you want I had a Honda that barely went over 125k before it died due to lack of care. Or a Yota that died as well before 175k. Both weren't well taken care of before me and sorta with me.
