This weekend will be it's last..March 12th will be it's last day open..had Soo many great memories here at this place..thank you for keeping this establishment open for us to enjoy all these years
My father grew up frequenting his local Pig Stand in the '50s and I did so in Beaumont, Texas until it closed in the '00s. I really miss it and feel sad that this is the only one left. Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere. If I'm ever in San Antonio I'll definitely make it a point to stop at the last one. Thank you for so many great memories!
A big hearty thank you TCR for reporting such a great news story. And a God bless this lady for saving this business may the Lord be with her forevermore
I went there about two years ago and the food was super duper delicious, scrumptious and very down to earth. Great ambiance, character and superb service.
Thank you so much Mary Ann. Pig Stand was one the first cafe I visited when I moved to SA from TN in 2001. I worked at Cardell Cabinetry just down the road and enjoyed lunch there countless times until I moved in 2012. Thanks for the good times and great food and wonderful staff. Miss Ya!
At the Pig Stand in San Antonio in 1983 my cousin and I were 19 years old and heading from Ft Stockton to Indianola. We had stopped to eat and were leaving. When we opened the door to my truck to get back in, my female pitbull jumped out and started running around and wouldn’t come to me. There was a lowrider parked right next to us with the drivers window rolled down and she jumped right in that car. My cousin started calling her but she wouldn’t come to him, so he opened the door to the lowrider and crawled inside it to grab the dog. He got her and put her in the truck and yelled at me to take off before the lowriders came outside wanting trouble. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breath and got dizzy, then he got tickled and started laughing! It was hilarious and is one of the hardest laughs I ever had. I finally pulled it together and we backed out and left! Good Times!!!
1921? My mother was born in Elmendorf in 1921, I was born in San Antonio in 1942. I see now that I must hurry back to San Antonio to revisit an icon of my youthful environment.
Just loved this one! I live in Charleston ,SC & we had The Pig In & The Piggy Park Drive-IN back in the 50's & 60's. Started by the Bessinger family who are still here today!! Come down & give them a look?
Stopped by a couple of weeks ago. Doing a good business and breakfast was good. Hope people support this business. Next time I drive thru San Antonio I will try to get by there to try something else.
I love the Pig Stands!! We had one here at Rigsby and WW White road. My parents and I used to go there when we were out late at night, and LOVED the breakfast!!! I miss that place dearly! I want to go down off of Broadway and take my Mom for breakfast one day soon. Re-live some old memories!!
exactly the type of place I believe we are all seeking , to visit good food , good people , and a step back in time . I traveled to San Antonio every other week for over 20 years , never knew of the place , talk about the disappointment I feel now , thanks Bob , for showing me , and others another jem in the great state of TEXAS !
When I lived in the Big Bend area and then later the Hill Country ,whenever I went to San Antonio I hit the Pig Stand. THE ORIGINAL and the greatest. Just think of ALL the drive through today around the world and where it all started. Stop in and Keep them OPEN !!
I loved the Pig Stand on Washington Ave in Houston and also the one on North Main St as well Many a good meal at both of them I think about the pig sandwich when ever I smoke a pork Butt in my smoker that sauce was great and the girls that worked there were great also.
I love this place.i remember going as a kid with my dad.as I got older I went there in my high school years on Fridays.im glad this place is still around still making memories.please give your support and stop in if in the area.
I used to go to a Pig Stand in Houston with my grandmother when I was a boy. There was still a Pig Stand in Houston when I left in '03, but I guess it must be closed now if this is the last one. I miss my grandmother, what I would give to visit this Pig Stand with her one more time.
Yes, they closed several years back. It made me incredibly sad because I used to live a little bit east on Washington and would eat there all the time.
This restaurant has truly stood the test of time - it has been several years since I ate there but I plan to do so very soon as i remember the food being very good !!!!!!!!!!
@@jollyjohnthepirate3168 : Yeah, the last one in Houston closed for the same reason. Maybe the same owner but I don't know that for a fact. www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Bankruptcy-closes-doors-of-historic-Pig-Stands-1865101.php
Places like this need to be preserved and protected. When I go to a big city I don't leave remembering the highways or high rises... it is places like this that I never forget. Places like this that make my trip great. - Heidi
This story is so crazy, my girlfriend loves pigs I will have to take her to this restaurant, love country reporter remember as a kid waking up and hoping I did not miss the episode either Saturday or Sunday morningg want to
Bob you had your first date at pig stand by white rick on garland road, just knew cause we are long time viewer and you were in our home room class at bryanadams high school, i rememer when you stated out on channel 4 dallas in that beater chevy van . They probably didnt trustee a teenager with a NEW van .
Oooooh, next time i’m in SA i gotta go get me some pig. Growth and density aren’t necessarily a bad thing (especially density, we need that now more than ever), but we need places like this too.
I first ate there in the early '70s. Been in and out of San Antonio several times as a resident and would often meet friends there for lunch or dinner. I know where I'll go next time I'm in SA.
This one was good I know cause it made me tear up. !! Do me a favor do a show on the underground cistern in Houston at least that would not make cry. ( I hate to see the last of anything ) Thank you Frank from montana...
Wohoo that sandwich at 5.35 looks awefull good. A wet dream for a meatlover like me. And those cars outside are realy on his place in front of that pigstand
She was able to run last 100 years, but sadly had to sell and retire last year. Wish I had taken the opportunity to visit during one of my trips to SA.
There was a Pig Stand Restaurant at S. Congress Ave. and Live Oak St. in the 1960's in Austin. It had a sign that read Eat A Pig Sandwich on it and was famous for a murder where an ex husband or boyfriend shot someone in a car in their drive in parking area parking lot with a high powered rifle.
I won't get to eat there again, much as I would have loved to on my next SA visit. As of March 2023, Pig Stand has closed down. A local developer just purchased that piece of property not very long ago. It's now the end of a 102-year era, long bypassed by progress.
Do a pig stand there on Broadway is one of the best restaurants in San Antonio and in the country and Mary and has a great job so the rest of the crew miss living down there
God bless this Woman... and God bless Texas.
