Torsten Sträter was actually present when Max Giermann impersonated him during "Der Deutsche Comedypreis 2020" He sat at a table in the front, happily smiling and shaking his head in disbelief. Max Giermann is being held in high regard for his art. And you are absolutely right, the make-up team should deserve a great round of applause. Then again Giermann once just put on the black beanie und "transformed" into Torsten Sträter just like that with out any latex prosthetic makeup. He sure is a rare talent.

The Honecker scene is from Sketch History a German TV series that was making a parody out of historical events. The guy, who was shot by Honecker is the west german rock musician Lindenberg, who performed a concert in East-Berlin in 1983. This was turned into a musical by Lindenberg called "Hinterm Horizont" and into a movie in 2010 "Die Akte Udo Lindenberg" In this Sketch he is asking for the GDR permit to have his festival and is in response shot and then they put in a dummy for him.

    • @tomate3391

Exactly, in in the early eighties Lindenberg wanted to perform so badly in the GDR. His song "Sonderzug nach Pankow" was all about that. And the look of Lindenberg in Sketch-History was from that period.

The best thing about the Thorsten Sträter Imitation was, he did it at an event, where Sträter got an award. And while he was speaking on stage, the camera switched to Sträter nearly peeing his pants in the audience! Priceless! Later, when he went on stage to get his award, he turned around and bowed to the backstage area, saluting to Giermann...

Maybe not really an impersonator of celebrities, but to me, Billy West comes to my mind with his extremely versatile voice. He spoke Stimpy on Ren & Stimpy and when John Kricfalusi, the voice of Ren was fired, Billy West took over his role. And at least to me, one can hear no difference. He also speaks multiple characters on Futurama with completely different voices. In one early episode he spoke an alien with a weird sound effect overlayed on their voice. Or so it seemed. In the DVD commentary he told it's no sound effect. It's just pure Billy West. In the commentary he once also perfectly imitated Stephen Hawking's speech synthesis.

24:00 The impression and the mask is shockingly accurate, but yes, it is Max Giermann. If you were familiar with Torsten Sträter, you could tell that the sound of the voice is slightly off - Giermann imitates his manner of speaking perfectly, but his voice has that slightly "compressed" tone that you just can't avoid when you imitate a voice that is much lower than your own. Max Giermann parodies him perfectly.

  • @newnyu7763

You are absolutly right in what you mentioned with the look, the phrases and the style of behaviour he imitates on point. But for obvious reasons you sadly couldn't mention some maybe even more brilliant aspects of his performances that complete his perfection.
On one hand he is doing jokes about these persons and the context they got public attention for (like scandals or personality they show in interviews or television shows etc.) AND on the other hand he perfectly matches the wording and language style of those persons. So he is using sentences that those person could have said themselves (by the feel of the language).
In rap context you'd say he is biting them.
So even given the fact that the visual imitation is brilliant you could close your eyes and recognize only by the sound imitation of the voices which person he is making fun of.
    (I checked ;) )
So an absolutly incredibly talented comedian.

Max Görmann is just brilliant, like others said, you definitely have to know the person and the behaviours he is imitating. Also it would be better, if you could see his imitations longer, since in this video, his takes are quit short and the imitations haven’t that depth in just 10 seconds.

It's great that you took the trouble to show the originals. Otherwise this video wouldn't have worked.
Hardly distinguishable from the original. Facial expressions, gestures, manner of speaking, accent...
Thorsten Sträter himself is also pretty good. Of course he's very eloquent, but I don't know if that can be translated well. Jochen Malmsheimer is also very eloquent (Hosenpredigt, Wurstbrot).

About Erich Honicker... the guy he shoots is Udo Lindenberg...
Udo had a huge fan base in the GDR, but for whatever reason he was never allowed to perform there, so he wrote a song "Sonderzug nach Pankow "
With this song he personally addressed Erich Honicker to ask why every stupid schlagerfutzi is invited and he isn't... a catchy song and totally funny. One line of the song says "Oh, Erich, you like to put on your leather jacket and lock yourself in the toilet and listen to West Radio."
The song became very popular in both the West and the East.
And then Udo Lindenberg actually got an invitation and he was allowed to perform at the Friedrich Stadtpalast and he sent Erich Honiker a leather jacket... in reference to his song... and yes,... simply because it was funny....😂
Erich Honicker By the way, Udo also gave something as a gift, namely a shalmei, so a multi-tone horn (you can also interpret a lot into this gift ;)).

The Honecker scene refers to the SED (ruling party of the GDR) not allowing the west german Rock musician Udo Lindenberg to play in the GDR.
in 1965 a waiver to bann beat music was signed in the gdr, to disrupt the
"attempt of west-imperialistic masterminds to carry acoustic war preperations into the GDR" (Walter Ulbricht, Head of the central committee).
This was used to to forbid the import of entire music genres from the west.
    Among them was rock music.
As a reaction Lindernberg wrote the song "Sonderzug nach Pankow" in which he asked Honeker why all the Schlageraffen (humpta-monkeys) where allowed to play and he wasn't.
4 years later Lindenberg was allowed a single 15 minute gig under heavy Stasi supervision (producing a file a 180 pages strong).

Kinski is the best. Max Giermann should be very careful and NOT imitate Kinski in South America. Why? When Werner Herzog filmed Fitcarraldo on location somewhere in the Peruvian or Brazilian rain forest with Kinski playing the protagonist, native workers approached Herzog and proposed to "disappear" Kinski free of charge because they couldn't watch Herzog and the crew suffer from Kinski's tantrums. He was mad, insane [insert more synonyms], and lunatic.

Max Giermann, is a genius concerning playing and speaking, and his appearance, the make-up, this is brillant too ... yes, he has great support. ;)
The thing that is astonishing, is the political appearance of Germany. You don't know Helmut Schmidt but Oliver Kahn and Jürgen Löw. Helmut Schmidt is one of the most considered chancellors. Similar to Helmut Kohl or Margaret Thatcher.
Seems that sports combines the different nations most.

My favourite Max Giermann impression is of Klaus Kinski in Sketch History's "reimagining" of the Fitzcarraldo fight scene.
For context, you should watch the original first: ua-cam.com/video/MPKODzv1PD4/v-deo.html
And this is what Sketch History made of this: ua-cam.com/video/5CSeDNce2cI/v-deo.html
Everything about this clip is genius, not just Max Giermann's performance but also the idea, the script, the set design, the costumes and makeup and the other actors. There is something very meta about Max Giermann playing a much nicer version of Kinski trying to 'act' as the psychopath he actually was, and him and Herzog basically reversing roles.

    Awesome... Genius...

You asked for anyone to educate yourself more on. Definetely Helmut Schmidt. Not because I'm a fan but to be honest to listen to this man's thoughts is something else. I'm not deep into politics but I read a book from him about China and it was mind-blowing. I recommend watching some of his speeches with subtitles. Maybe worth your time.
For example watch this video "German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt on world leaders" and you'll see what I mean. He was asked spontaneously about world leaders and taking into account the time he was asked he made some very clear and in my opinion bold answers.

7:09 this is making fun of a piece of German histoy. German rock singer Udo Lindenberg (the other guy in the scene) was seeking permission to give a concert in East Berlin.
He actually even wrote a song about that, "Sonderzug nach Pankow". Here it is, with an English translation:
    ua-cam.com/video/vK0HOMY4SU8/v-deo.html
After much deliberation within the GDR state and with the Stasi, Lindenberg actually could give a concert in East Berlin. Couldn't play Sonderzug nach Pankow there, though, he wouldn't play that in East Germany until after the Communists were gone.

Apart from that often it's either the way he looks or he speaks so similarly (btw he also imitates all the German dialects so well - Helmuth Schmidt who was from Hamburg, for example...) - love it! Udo Lindenberg (the guy shot by Honecker in the sketch) was is a very famous singer who back in the days wasn't allowed to perform in East Germany and even made a successful song about that fact. The sketch shows Honecker rather shooting Lindenberg than granting him a visa to East Germany. Jens Spahn was considered a very ambitious young politician and for a brief time even considered a potential next chancellor (thus the joke about him accidentally calling himself chancellor) but handled the pandemic in a less than optimal manner and has since sort of sunk into oblivion.

He is incredibly good at capturing the characters but does emphasize a lot of quirks a bit too much. I'm sure that is for comedic purposes though.
If you plan to do research on some of the characters Max portrayed, I'd suggest Helmut Schmidt. He was quite the character and there's a lot of stuff named after him and/or his wife Loki (the airport in Hamburg for example). They both left their marks all over the country.
