Animals have souls, emotions, can communicate with each other and humans, and dream. They show more compassion than most humans, and probably knew they (the dog and goat) were going to die. Dogs are trainable. You need to understand them and have patience to do so. Kristi Noem shame on you. My Hank (black German shepherd) was untrainable to his previous owner. He is now the most loyal dog I’ve ever had and he is 14months. I’ve never met a bad dog but lots of bad owners.
To be fair, we have a bad dog. We have had him for 14 years because no one else wanted him. First dog we ever had that we could not train. He is on his last legs, still not a good dog, but we will treat him with love up until the end. We couldn't get anyone to take him, so we did the best we could.

but some breeds, (cocker spaniels for example) have a genetic marker for lowered inhibitions and sudden, unprovoked rage...I have no doubt you did the best you could. Thank you for trying and doing what is RIGHT versus what was EASIEST.

@@lf3541 even that isnt universally accurate. I know several spaniels who are nothing like that but the exact opposite and very well trained to obey commands. Much like pitbulls have this unjustified bad reputation because they can be trained to be aggressive with little effort, any pitbull can be a total cuddlebug in the right environment with zero risk of spontaneous aggressive behavior. I am of the opinion that it is always the failure of the human if a dog is problematic and its not necessarily bad intent but simply the wrong method. And thats where outside help should be sought, to train the human train the dog.

My son and his family has a dog that repeatedly failed hunting dog school (not kidding, they paid a lot of money for it) she is the one that nibbles me out of excitement when I go over. He also has one that was dumped on the side of the road because he is blind in one eye. I taught my children that there is not a single perfect person on the face of the world and we all deserve love. That is how they treat both people and animals.

OR for another purpose. Lots of livestock guardian dogs are aggressive to other "varmints," ie. what they see chickens as. This dog might have made a fine police dog. I always say - "a dog that won't bite, is too gentle to be a watch dog."

My 14-month-old borador ate my brand new sofa. She's now 8yrs old and beautifully behaved. It's called patience, training, and most of all love.
My childhood dog ate a couch too when he was puppy and he grew up to be the most wonderful dog I've ever encountered. He had human eyes and was so protective of the family.

My wife's grandfather used to train dogs for field shows. Know what happened to the dogs that didn't make the cut? He took them home to be a family dog. This isn't the frontier anymore. You're not going to starve because the family dog chased away dinner.

Laws vary from state to state--especially in regards to farm animals and animals endangering livestock. But, just because it's legal, doesn't mean you should brag about it. That is what she's done by including this story, and other ones regarding killing the goat and old horses in her book. Also, she never once considered the options available to her, i.e., finding a QUALIFIED trainer, rehoming the dog, or taking it to a no-kill shelter, all of which are available in South Dakota.

I live in South Dakota and I am mortified that she is my governor. Not long ago a sweet elderly woman wanting to connect with me and have something in common gushed over what a wonderful governor we have. I was shocked, and it must have shown. I listed several reasons why I was appalled; nepotism, covering up ahorendous crime, threatening the lives of the elderly in my community among others and simply not doing the job she was elected to do to jet around the country at our expense to toady up to Trump. VP was her end game. She could very easily be our next president. Be SCARED….be very scared.

Years ago I was chatting with a lady in Connecticut who worked in animal welfare and testified in animal cruelty court cases. Her experience had led her to the conclusion that she had never once seen a vicious dog, but that she had seen plenty of vicious owners.
