  • Some of the 2019 Kia Niro EV features and functionality are harder to find and unless you read the giant manual you may be missing out on some cool things. These not so obvious features should also apply to the Hyundai Kona Electric as well as the new 2020 Kia Soul EV since both share DNA with the Kia Niro EV.

    Hey Ho! I now own a 2019 NIRO- and this has been the BEST help getting used to the EV and its 'habits'. I bought the EV via the Internet, so I had NO dealer instructions, and this is my 02nd EV. My first, the IONIQ 03 [2017-2021} is very much like the NIRO, but the NIRO is worlds better!

    Agree with one of the comments below, I believe the teal section of the power monitor is entirely dependent on terrain or resistance. It is telling you what is considered an "eco" throttle application, but depends on if you are going uphill or downhill. For example, if you are going uphill, you will need more throttle to get up the hill, so it allows more throttle that would still be considered eco driving. Downhill, the opposite occurs, and the allowed throttle to remain in the eco section will decrease!

      Thanks for the reply. I have had time to test it more since the video was made and that appears to be the case. The Eco section also seems to expand to keep you in it as much as it can when required. Thanks again.

    The incline also influences the position of the marker between eco and power range. Uphill the eco range is larger, downhill it is smaller. I always understood it as giving you clue what power levels are considered eco driving. It doesn’t feel like there is a difference on throttle response depending on where the marker actually is.

    The teal "eco" section of the power meter is also sensitive to terrain. If you're going uphill it expands; if you're going downhill it contracts.

    Sure enough, I checked the middle seat belt and saw how the buckle was making an indentation into the seat when the seat was down. Your suggestion fixed that pending issue. I also recently found out how I can open the trunk from the inside when it's closed by putting a kitchen knife in a slot located in the bottom middle of the trunk and sliding the knife in the slot to unlatch the trunk lock. btw the Power gauge you refer to around 7:00 for eco mode, I believe is based on the gradient of the road you are driving. Essentially, if you are driving uphill its expecting you to apply more throttle and thus reduces the point at which the driving style is considered in the 'Power' section. I think its just a visual aid to help keep your driving economical, whist giving you a realistic target which is adapting to the roads in real time.

    In eco mode the power gauge shows how "eco" your throttle input is. You can see on the driving history while driving whether you are driving economical, normal or sporty. I guess the limits are the same for both indicators. The power gauge will lower the eco range as a function of the speed you are traveling. I found the eco range is smallest when you exceed the eco limiter.
    As for the luggage cover. You don't need to flip it but can also inverse it and then place back the plastic cover which you were still holding onto in the video.

    Could you please check how quickly in winter you get warm airflow from vents in E-Niro with heatpump (without preheating). I presume E-Niros with heat pump also have a PTC-heater to complement the heatpump at start and at very low temperatures.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  3 роки тому +2

      In the winter, if I don't preheat the car (not very often), the vents blow hot air within a few minutes. Regarding heating types, I believe that EVs with heatpumps also have resistive heating, like the cars that do not have heatpumps, because they are only efficient to a certain temperature below 0C. I am trying to find out what temperature the heatpump in the Niro EV (and related models) stops working as well as what additional heating types are in the cars.

    Here’s a new one for you:
    If you set the headlights to the “on” position they automatically turn off when you turn the car off. It’s perfect for Vancouver where it rains 10 months out of the year. There is no need to ever use the “auto” position.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 роки тому +1

      I had noticed this when I set my headlights to "On" because the auto sensor was not seeing it as dark enough, and I forgot to turn them back to "Auto" before leaving the car. The next day I saw that they were off. It makes sense that Kia would do this though because the 12V battery already gets more use than in a gas car and they would want to prevent excessive drain. Also to note, the interior lights, if left on, will also turn off fairly quickly if you forget them in the "On" position. Thanks for the info!

    I have a question. Would you get the Base Niro EV here in Northern Canada? The Kia Canada website shows no battery heater on the EX model but does show it on the SX model only. It's an $8000 difference in price so really expensive if all you want is the battery heater. Can you live in -45C without a battery heater?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 роки тому

      This is a good question and one that should be considered by anyone who lives in a colder climate. The EX is not only missing the Winter Mode battery heater, it also has no heat-pump, no heated seats, no advanced safety features, etc. It was seriously handicapped on purpose as Kia did not want to sell any more than the mandatory quantity required to be eligible for the federal credit. With that being said, the Hyundai Kona Electric in Preferred trim is the same price as the Niro EV EX trim, but offers all of the missing features, so it is a much better purchase. I would not recommend the Niro EV EX trim.

    Love the "auto regen" finding. Great explanation 👍
    Does the break tail lights turn on when you put your leg off the gas pedal at regen level 3 or 2?
    What about when "auto" is set?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 роки тому +4

      Thank you very much 🙂
      In any level of regen (1, 2, or 3) if you are going fast enough for the car to slow down as if applying the brakes, the tail lights will light up. If the regen only slows the car down a bit, based on your current speed, then the tail lights will not light up. This applies in Auto or manual regen setting. I hope this helps.

    • @ChuchaKnaany
      @ChuchaKnaany 4 роки тому +1

      @@EV-olution it answer the question perfectly. Now another one 😉:
      Since I never drove an EV but planing to buy the Niro when it comes out, can you help me understand the regen break force - does the break force change based on the speed you're at? How does it compare to regular shift drive where releasing the gas pedal when in the fifth gear is different then if you're at first
      Thanks!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 роки тому +1

      @@ChuchaKnaany The regen levels let you adjust how much the car slows down at different speeds, each level giving more regenerative braking power and slowing the car down more than the previous, but how fast you drive has an impact; the slower you go the less the lower level slows the car down. Level 1 makes the car feel similar to an automatic gas-powered. One note, at slow speeds the car will slow down less in regen 1 so you can increase to 2 to keep the braking power up, then set it to 3 as the car slows down more. This is why auto regen is awesome. In Regen 2, when you let off the accelerator pedal the car will slow down more noticeably, like down shifting a manual car from 3rd to 2nd at normal/lower speeds for the gear. Regen 3 is fairly strong and letting off the accelerator at 60km/h will slow the car down quite a bit. It is hard to compare each level; the best is for you to try it. If you can’t test a Niro EV, then try the Kona Electric, same electronics, so you will know what the regen is like. The Kona is more readily available.

    • @peterbodifee
      @peterbodifee 4 роки тому +2

      Lior Knaany I would say level 3 is comparable to like shifting down 1-2 gears on 5 speed man transmission. That is if you completely take off any pressure on the throttle. The beauty of this drive by wire system is that you can completely learn how to regulate slowing down without having to use the brake pedal and thus extend the useful life of the brake pads and discs dramatically. You can actually stop the car without the brake pedal by using the left paddle. Once the car is stopped, it will actually hold (even if auto hold is off), also on non-horizontal roads. Which is awesome, because I live in a hilly city.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 роки тому +2

      @@peterbodifee One thing to note though, if you stop the car with the left paddle the brake lights do not stay on, they go out when the car is stopped completely; you must press the brake pedal for them to light up and if Auto Hold is on they stay on.

  • @peterbodifee
    @peterbodifee 4 роки тому

    I am going to try out auto regen mode at level 1 to see what you actually mean. I have always auto regen level 3, so I can drive without using the friction brakes. Maybe auto regen isn’t doing anything different in level 3. I have always assumed based on the behaviour that auto only works when the smart cruise control is on.

      Basically the regen level is the same in both modes, so if you are set to 1 Auto, it is the same as 1 regular. The difference is that in Auto the car will increase to level 2 and 3 as needed, by itself, then reduce it back to level 1 that was set. If you leave your car set to level 3, that is the minimum that the car will reduce to, in other words, it makes no difference.

    Have you tried testing the forward emergency braking system? I tried putting a 3-foot tall cardboard box in front of the car and rolling forward to see if it would stop. I didn't get a beep, and it didn't stop. It just punted it away. I'm a little disappointed.

      Almost all cars that have an electric motor have regenerative braking; the Niro EV, Soul EV, Kona Electric, Ioniq Electric, Leaf, all Teslas, have regenerative braking. If you were considering a plugin hybrid because of this then go for full electric, you won't regret it.

    The outside and inside temperature setting in my e-niro has somehow stuck itself into Fahrenheit degrees. As I'm used to Celsius, this is rather annoying. Trying to change the setting via the appropriate button on the steering wheel does not work anymore. Did you perhaps encounter a manner to change it back to Celsius when you got in engineering mode?

      @EV-olution  4 роки тому

      I just spent 20 minutes going through the engineering mode menus and disabled my backup camera by accident 🙂. That is fixed, but I was not able to see any setting that would make F default and fixed. I suggest performing a factory reset of your cluster as well as the center touch screen. This will erase all EV power use history as well as radio settings, among other user data, but the buttons on the steering should allow you to change the temperature from F to C with no issues. You could also try a reset then disconnect the 12V battery for 30 minutes. This would ensure the system memory would be wiped as well. If that does not work then I am afraid you will have to contact your local Kia. Sorry I was not of more help.

Essentially, when used as intended on the highway, it makes driving far less stressful, especially in stop and go traffic and is very smart. • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 роки тому +1

      It's OK if electric cars are not for you, or do not fit your requirements, but it is important to note that an electric car can be good for highway driving and long roadtrips. Most of my driving is highway and I have done several long trips, my longest being 1,110km, and I had no issues. The important part is living in a province or state that supports EVs by having a good charging network. If you don't live in a place where there are at least a few rapid chargers on the main highways then I agree that long trips are not great. Hopefully the charging network will be expanded quickly, hopefully prices will continue to drop, and more models will become available so that everyone can enjoy the multiple benefits of driving an electric vehicle. Thanks for watching.
