Long-winded comment but I love 3D fashion so this hit a sweet spot for me. Obviously- thanks so much for this wonderful conversation, Zoe and Coy!!!!
For those interested in learning 3D software, I wanted to add a second comment in support of getting started on a powerful, FREE program like Blender. There are toonnns of comprehensive tutorials on UA-cam specifically for Blender, and their own docs are very helpful. Another free powerhouse is Unreal Engine, which is geared toward game dev, but lots of people in the film and animation industries use it for photorealistic rendering,- and all 3 industries are, like Coy and Zoe mentioned, looking for fashion-focused artists.
I also personally recommend watching architectural visualization/photorealistic landscape tutorials to develop strong 3D spatial awareness and lighting skills; great lighting, proportion, and coloring will have people staring at your portfolio trying to guess which images are actually photos. It's not only a massive flex, but I think it's also a helpful confidence-builder after sketching. It can be incredibly affirming to see your own designs in a photorealistic setting before whipping up a muslin (which you should absolutely still do).
These programs can't and shouldn't replace a skilled atelier, but I do believe that they can help us continue to create tangible things with more sincerity. And there's nothing wrong with another tool in the toolbelt!

In addition to this you have Nomad Sculpt, Forager, And Spline, but Spline is the only free one from those last 3. The other two are under 20 bucks. I’m still watching this but not sure I understand what they are attempting to do at her company. What I see in the render shared is just animation with a cloth simulator (this is in Blender or can purchase a plug-in to do this.). But if you want to get into this as an independent you can do so for free. Using the aforementioned Blender and free mocap programs and unreal engine, you could do this in under an hour. Mind you it would take a lot of learning, but not sure why it’s marketed at fashion technologies.
If you are planning to have someone create your garments in 3D, using Clo3d (Marvelous Designer is actually the most used, not Clo, but they are the same company, you can animate in Marvelous Designer) would be your best bet, as it’s using the real measurements and flat lays. You can have samples sewn (or you sew them) and hand off to someone like me to bring it to life with animation and colors and cloth simulations. I wanted to add this as I’d hate to see those of us who are Indy think they can’t do this because of money.
You can also create avatars for free using meta human, animate for free in adobes online free rig and animator. I would steer clear of DAZ 3D as it’s much too resource heavy. You can use online renderers too.
I often share my work in your group Zoe, but would have been happy to sit in on this. Clo is too expensive to start with. Marvelous is cheapest if you want to keep costs down at start. But you can start in Blender with the same cloth sim…for free. Okay gonna stop rambling.

I am so happy that Fashion Technology was talked about. I am really into fashion tech because it is a good way to start with slow fashion. Also, I am really interested with fashion tech integrated in Augmented Reality! so cool!

I don't believe that digital fashion programs should replace a skilled atelier of pattern and sample makers, nor should a digital runway show fully replace a physical one, but I believe that these technologies could be used to reduce costs and ethical issues related to product development, which can be magical for low-end and mid-end brands.

This video and the positive remarks towards 3D fashion shows has a WHOLE different tone in light of AI "art" going mainstream. How many workers were eliminated for this "fashion show? No models? No makeup artists? No dressers? It's not worth it and won't ever have the impact of HUMAN BEINGS.

Hihi! I have a question, where are good places to get a custom fabric? I have a design I want on a mesh/stretch type of fabric- think the trendy fashion pieces with the mesh that are tight (fashion nova, dolls kill, etc) im trying to get into designing myself and not sure where to go with things like these!
Thank you so much, I love your channel! ❤️❤️
