    Pat Mac’s - 4 Reasons To Train
    1. Self-preservation and longevity | ex. “Stronger is longer. Motion is lotion. Mobility equals survivability.”
    2. Ability to save your own life. | ex. Pull yourself out of something, fight your way out of a crushed car, or fire, or run from something.
    3. More importantly, ability to save someone elses life. | ex. need to be able to carry your child, wife, friend, and/or neighbor and run to safety
    4. Kick someone’s ass | ex. Resolve conflict with physical violence to defend, escape, and/or protect yourself and loved ones.

When I retired from active duty in 2009, I had the pleasure of meeting a special individual who told me: exercise to be at your best at your worst...pulling someone from a burning bld or vehicle accident, saving yourself or loved one, terrible treatments for a terrible disease. Always good contents on here.

At 59, I have been practicing a "Something is better than nothing" philosophy of working out every day along with "Don't eat bullshit" dietary regimen. Over the past 3 or so years I've lost 50 lbs and im pretty damn good shape. This CST concept hits home for me because I know that if I move the wrong way--I'm going to injury myself.

I had 3/4 of a foot amputated last October. (Long story)
Until I can walk unaided I’m focused on bands. I don’t want to use weights in case I drop them on my fo (half a foot)
Your band stuff has really helped mate. Thanks Pat.

Truly a game changer Pat Mac has a truly easy to understand how and why ability. After adding training tips and knowledge from T.A.P.S as well as from combat strentgh training I have added a new level to my training. More importantly I am able to pass this knowledge to my shop patrons reinforcing these lessons while sharing knowledge. Knowledge hoarded is knowledge lost. Thanks for all the wisdom and experience that you share ROCK ON!!!

Love it! Thanks Pat & CJ. Being a trainer and gym owner, I see it all, and always stress to my clients the importance of all the aspects of exercise and functional movements to help their every day life. As a mentor of mine would say though, the exercise doesn’t have to look like the skill to help improve the skill though. Exercise, hormetic stressors (deliberate cold and heat) and recovery are so crucial to our resiliency and longevity. Thanks for helping spread the word!!

"Too heavy too soon"! Indeed, this is especially important. Muscles grow a lot faster than tendons and ligaments. You want injuries that will sideline you, go too heavy, too soon.

In the Marine Corps back in the late 80s early 90s we ran with that old flack jacket, ran in mopp levels plus obstacle course on a regular basis.

In 1994 a book by the title, Conditioning for Football was written by Indianapolis Colts Strength Coach Tom Zupancic.
What made this book different then others is Tom had the colts do what is now functional fitness.
Tom had some weird lifts like carrying a beer keg on your shoulder down and back. Then carry it on your other shoulder down and back. Then carry the keg in front of you.
Tom also was the first person i saw with kettlebells only he used pony kegs filled with led shot. 50, 75 and 100 lb pony kegs and you would grab the handles and swing the pony keg through your legs the forcibly contract your whole body to swing it back. He said it was better than power cleans and wrestlers could use it for conditioning and grip strength.
Tom also used tractor suitcase weights created a yoke walk with the weights. Also they dragged the weights and famers carried the weights.

Jocko has already said that all you need for a workout is a black mat and that's it. You can workout anywhere. Having a mechanism for pull ups is great and it doesn't necessarily have to be a pull up bar.

I have actually quit all those things, and transitioned to only weight lifting. The only cardio i do is a 1 mile dog walk.
All natural Bone density , testosterone and relaxation is my recipe for growing old, thats why I have chosen strength training with weights.
But its a pain in the ass just to get down in the floor to do sit ups. I was thinking to myself just today if I was back there on sand hill GA, where them drill sergeant all that "your up he sees you your down." " On your front, on your back, on your feet." shit.....but im not scared, wars not gonna happen overnight. If the US ever needs me to fight again, Ill get drafted and some guy will show up to whip me back into from ghting shape. Make me shine my boots. Lol

You are the expert so i wanna ask: i got good results using the traditional gym split to get back into shape (5 ft 10, 207 went back to 171 pounds). Now that i am in a more comfortable weight, functional fitness is all i do. BUT i would say classic gym works for fitness models, getting back from an injury AND ALSO getting back into some sort of shape, so once you are there you can start with combat fitness training...is that ok? Or combat streght training would have worked just as fine??

I’m becoming anal about my sleep schedule. I think it makes a big difference. I’m 40 and overweight. I’m trying to walk 3 miles a day again. I’ve introduced push ups as well. I did 3 miles uphill already without stopping after a month or so. 3.1 mph on a treadmill at 3-6.5 incline. My hips are killing me daily I need to stretch them out first or something.

Borderline meaning still consuming sugar and refined carbs. I borderline but I fast almost 24 hours. And I perform mobility excercises with heavy kettlebell swings using anti glycolitic rest periods mixing jump rope. Mindset. Modern saying is if you can’t perform resting/Asian squats and seiza for longer than five to ten minutes, everything else is just spinning your wheels. Your hips are not flexible and your knees are not flexible and your setting yourself up for lower back and knee pain down the road for the rest of your life. So evrything else would be un doable and spinning wheels.
