As a Navajo, I/my family had that same stove before, while living in a female hóóghan. To quickly cook on that stove, you see the door/opening for it? There is a base/flat plate in front of the opening that forms a shallow bowl. What you do is bring out the red hot coals onto that base and evenly spread it out. Then you'd place your pot/pan/bowl/etc to cook/boil your food/water faster.
I am a Navajo who was born and raised on my homeland Navajo reservation. Kudos to you for experiencing what it is to live in a hogan (prounounced Ho'gone' ) translated to english it means "house" "home". We would have been watching you at 27:26 laughing at the funny acting "white guy" wondering what on earth is he doing?
From ages 6-9, my father ran the trading post in Nazlini, outside of Ganado. We were the only white family for many miles. I learned a lot about the Navajo culture that stick with me today. This was back in the late 70’s, basically no technology. Wild times.
@@spartanswerve7575 I'm born and raised in Nazlini but i come from a little place up north called Flatrock. My late paternal grandmother my father mother name was Grace Descheenie and her husband was Hosteen GreySinger or Singer from Flatrock
i love when non natives go out of their way to experience and learn about our culture even if its not all the tribes its at least one, i hope you get to experience more tribes culture in future videos ryan!
Oh wow. That gets a huge thank you from me, not having ever seen any Native American culture up close like that. Thank you, Ryan. Plus, your stew looked so delicious.
To cook on the wood stove, you close the door and close the dampers on the front. It'll keep the heat in when the fire is going good. You can leave the damper a tiny bit open to heat up fast but otherwise keep it closed so the wood lasts longer and it doesn't get too hot. I'll send you an invoice. You're welcome.
Best nights sleep I ever had when I slept in one on the Navajo reservation. Came with traditional diner and breakfast and was set up next to my host family’s trailer. The only items it had was blankets on the ground, a stove I didn’t have to use for heat and a wash basin. The doors always face north because that’s where the Navajo came from. A great people and the highest percentage of any ethnic group with US military service. American flags everywhere and I almost got to meet a Navajo code talker but he was a little under the weather that day. That was at a PowWow where I was invited to and natives promised they would not scalp the pale face.
So first, the fact that you take the time to put whatever Celsius would be for your viewers is amazing. You truly care and take your time to hit every target audience, that’s why you’re rising to the top so quick! Secondly, You didn’t want to show us the “pit” of the toilet but I know for sure because I’m the same way. The “fear of loss” made you want to “go to the bathroom” so quick after that bit. lol Keep pushing Ryan! It’s only up from here! The rest of the 150k+ subscribers agree!
One of the things that really impressed me when I moved to AZ was seeing the various weather cells off in a distance...even here in Mesa, I can be completely dry yet see rain storms a short distance away....your stew looked fantastic! Have you ever thought about opening up a small cafe and having what you have cooked on your trips being your menu? Take care!
You should reach out to Foresty forest and do a video together he’s a super Awsome mountain UA-camr who lives out of his van and climb a mountain with him
You're saying Hogan like Hulk Hogan. Hogan in Navajo is pronounced Ho' gone, but respect for staying in one and knowing there is a female and a male ho'gone.
Being from the UK, i really do appreciate the temperature conversions as Fahrenheit means absolutely nothing to me and when you say "70 degrees" it would mean nothing. Little subtle touch you add but it makes the vids a lot more immersive. Keep it up brother
Awesome video! I never even hear of a Hogan before. Thanks for such entertaining content. Always excited to see your channel pop up on the feed. Can't wait for the next one. I'm sure there's a lot of that goes into the concept and creation of each video. It's very much appreciated.
Cool bro I been watching since you first started, i grew up on 89 lol ... look forward too having you again, there's so much too see .. n do .. be safe out, there 🤝🏽
just a tip for the stew, since i hate adding cornstarch too - putting some of those powdered, instant mashed potatoes in a little at a time works pretty well and doesn't ruin or distract from the flavor
Newly subscribed, thanks for checking out the homeland. Makes me want to take a trip back home (Dine´Nation). And yeah, we usually cook on the coals themselves just to keep from overheating while cooking, lol. Great video!
I like the Hogan! So nice of Shana to open them up so people can enjoy them and the culture. Man your stew looked so yummy🍲, really enjoyed this video thank you for sharing and taking us along😊.
Definitely got the feels watching this video, having lived in AZ for 20 years........driving across the Rez......watch out for cattle! Now I'm in South America.....living amongst indigenous peoples (Canari/Incan)
Fantastic vid, Ryan! It was a nice change to switch things up and stay somewhere else. I love the format of all your videos: very real, very relaxing and never boring. 😀👍
What a fantastic place to stay, thanks for taking us on the adventure! A little trick I learned during a cooking class I took at TrueNorth Health is that their chef likes to use brown rice flour to thicken soups & stews. It's also flavor neutral. Easy to find at Whole Foods, many grocery stores and online. (I'm not a fan of corn starch flour either).
Navajo traditional daily life is a wonderful blessing. 🦅 I miss the time I lived in a hogan for 1 whole summer (2 years ago). I absolutely loved every day & night. & Miss it so much! 😢 Sheepherding 🐑🐏every day & caring for the property was amazing & a learning humbling experience that I will cherish forever. 🥰
1. Celery is so satisfying to cut 2. Rice pudding is delicious. Not enough people appreciate it. 3. Thank you for sharing this hogan experience. What a beautiful and cozy structure.
I grew up living in one of those as a kid, it wasn’t for a long period of time but I remember hearing the snow and rain hitting the stove pipe at night. Couple years my parents built a house next to the hogan. Hogan is still there but it’s not safe to go inside.
I too love watching your videos and look forward to seeing them every time they're uploaded! That said, what's going on with your other build? Secondly, why haven't you ever scheduled a trip to see a rocket launch because I for one would love to see that video!

I would definitely not dare to go outside for a pee or anything else 😱. Thank you for the fun video Ryan 🤗❤❤
