    I’m been raising worms for years and your doing great. I recommend buying a micro shredder and shred cardboard boxes. Every time you feed you need to add carbon I use mostly boxes and dead leafs. It helps with smell and moisture a lot. Freeze your food scraps will help the worms eat it faster also add a grit for the worms I use oyster shell flower and azomite. It helps the worms but also adds minerals to the garden and control ph in the bin

      Hi Paul: Thanks for the comments. Glad you enjoyed the video. I too, use leaves to help keep down odor and moisture. As far as the smell, it really doesn't have a bad smell - I just have a gagging-reflect so any kind of pungent smell can get me going, even when I'm at my compost bin making regular compost. But it's not a rotting or sulfur smell. I like to use coffee grounds for the grit. I get them in great abundance from my local StarBucks ;-) . Thank you so much for your suggestions & for watching! Hi Van Robertson: Thanks for the comment. Glad the video helped! Also glad you're growing your own food, it's a great feeling to harvest your own crops, and it will give you a newfound respect for all the hard work that goes in gardening/farming. We hate wasting anything here at J&D, so we compost everything or add it to our worm farm. As you get more into gardening you will find you have the same feeling towards wastage, look into composting or vermicomposting, you will be glad you did. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

    I've been feeding worms for about 3 years. I'm using 3 storage containers. They are a pain and quite heavy to arrange and re-arrange. I put a couple of pounds of kitchen scraps in per week. But mine never smells. The strangest thing is even after putting a couple of pounds of scraps in per week the level of soil in the bin never goes up! It's freaky.

    • @jdgardensnj4563

      Hi @timothyhargadon752 . Thanks for the comment. Ours doesn't actually smell bad, I'm just particularly sensitive to any kind of earthy smell. It's a nightmare when I start turning my compost pile :-) . As far as feeding it, I'm with you! Our worms are ferocious eaters, especially when it starts getting hot. I can't keep up with them. They really love all the suckers from all the tomato plants, that's their chocolate ;-) . Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

    How will you store your worm castings? I have used a 5 gallon Home Depot bucket but it gets moldy. Some people use a burlap (or jute) bag but I have heard those deteriorate (if worm cocoons are present and hatch perhaps worms will eat it) and are messy leaking out contents. Probably the same for cotton or canvas bag. Would a woven polyethylene bag be a good material? Thanks.

    • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  7 місяців тому

      Hi @markowensby3662 . Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the comment. We make alot of potting mix throughout the year so I usually it right away ... so the moisture isn't an issue. But for the times I do store it, I'll sift out all the worms using Hercules, the way I show in the video, and then I'll let it dry out for a few days, before I store it. And it's usually in some kind of plastic container or bag to stop any moisture from getting to it. If you dry it out correctly, you shouldn't have any problems with mold and it'll still be fine to use in your potting mix in the spring. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

    You may want to add less food at more frequent intervals. If the food is sitting long enough to rot and smell bad, you may be feeding them too much? Idk, still a noob at this, burying 5 gallon buckets in my raised beds.

      Hi @Billbarker57 . Sorry for the delayed response - thanks for the comment. I get this alot from that video. I’ve just started a hungry bin, following the instructions mine is almost full to the top from the get go. Did yours start out that way too and just settle once the worms started to do their thing?

    • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  Рік тому

      Hi @gityerkneedahn . Thanks for the comment. When I first started it, I didn't fill it to the top because you want to get your worms acclimated to the new environment and you don't want to overfeed them. But yes, most of the stuff that you're probably putting in is pretty airy so once they start eating, especially in the summertime, you're going to see how it all compacts down. Also, it depends on how many worms you have. The more worms you have ... the more food you can start off with. But you should be fine because worms are extremely active during the summer months. Just a tip: If you find that during the really hot days, worms are trying to climb out of the bin or are all hanging on to the bottom of the lid, then you might want to consider freezing some of the scraps that you're going to be putting into the bin. This will help cool down the environment for the worms. One worm farmer even told me that he uses frozen water bottles and switches them out during those hot days and just keeps re-using them. Hope this helps. I'm actually going to be doing a Year Review video soon ... so keep an eye out for it. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

    Just watching your channel first time. I'm sorry to tell you the liquid your getting is leachate and it's actually not good. It's the rotten liquid from the vegetables and clippings so to speak....it's not worm juice. You can add this to trees especially pines or cedars.
    Worm tea is from taking castings in water and aerating it with a bubbler for 24 to 48 hours. Needs to be used immediately on your plants leaves stock and dirt.
    I've never used hungry bin but have about 100k worms.
    Your worms crawl to the top like they did is because they're over heated and a frozen bottle of water will aid in cooling it down. As for the compressor it actually puts off a ton of heat.
    Bins should never smell, should always smell like dirt. The smell means it's annorbic and causes problems.
    You should always add carbon to the bin when you add food. That should help with the smell. I always put the food under the castings and add shredded cardboard on the top.
    Just a few thoughts

    • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  Рік тому +1

      Hi Tammy: Thanks for the comment. It's interesting what you said about the worm tea ... I've gotten alot of people commenting Pros and Cons against it. Luckily enough that our plants seem to love it and we've noticed a difference. But I do understand what you're saying about using a bubbler. We actually do that process when we're making our compost tea ;-) . This summer, we'll probably try it with the worm castings.
      It was such a crazy hot summer in NJ this past year, I thought I would leave the bin by the compressor because it radiates heat but it also blows alot of air towards it. But I like what you said about the frozen bottle of water ... I think I'll try that this summer. As far as the smell, it's really not a rotten smell - I should have explained it in the video. I just have a gagging reflex and any kind of pungent smell can get me going. Even if the smell is a pleasant one. We do tons of regular composting here at J&D, we've been doing it for years and whenever we get a fresh batch of some nice earthy smelling compost, I start up with the dry-heaves, lol.
      Thank you so much for all of your advice. Sounds like you've been doing it for awhile. It's been our first year with the Hungry Bin. So far, so good. We've gotten several bricks from it and we're so happy that we never throw food scraps away - it goes right to the worm guys. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

    • @jdgardensnj4563
      @jdgardensnj4563  Рік тому

      Hi Dario: Thanks for your question. Generally NO, the worm tea doesn't let off much of an odor but if you were to put your nose right to it, I'm sure it wouldn't smell like roses, lol. But it won't stink up your garage. As for as the bin itself, as long as you're doing a good mixture of food and carbon materials, your worm bin will be fine and won't stick up the joint. ;-) Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

    Nice video. I thought it shouldn't smell that bad. Would it help if you added more carbon (paper, cardboard, leaves, peat, etc)? Also, I thought it would be filled closer to the top. 12 lbs seems like a good amount of worm castings.
