  • This is part of my conversation with Burton Cummings, of THE GUESS WHO and my comments about the news of Burton Cummings suing Gary Peterson and Jim Kale.
From Rolling Stone April 30, 2024.
Burton Cummings, a co-founder of the Guess Who, canceled his performance license agreements for the band's songs he wrote, including "American Woman" and "These Eyes". This action removes copyright protections, preventing the current Guess Who from performing the band's hits. Cummings has said that the band will be sued each time they perform a song he wrote, and that he's willing to do anything to stop the current band because they're "taking [Randy Bachman's and my] life story and pretending it's theirs"

Burton is like Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian treasure. Nice insightful interview. Still missing the old show, Henry Diltz, W. Cooper, S. Friedman were never miss shows.👍

Just as a clarification. Burton owns the entire GW catalogue from 66 - 75 and not just the songs he wrote/co-wrote. The cover band cannot play any of the songs regardless of who wrote them. Just clarifying the comment from Rolling Stone.
