  • Showing some experimentation I've been playing with, different designs of baffles to fit inside 3" diameter side pipes. First design is 2" pipe inside the 3" pipe, others are 1 3/4 inch pipe, the "reversion" design is two pieces of 1.5 inch antenna mast.

Very informative video, nice to see real world testing 👍🏼

Thank you for making this so many years ago!! I’ve referred back to this video several times. I have a C3 Corvette with sidepipes and am trying to temper the noise levels from ‘wake the dead’ to tolerable. My ultimate design is going to be a reverse flow with electric cutouts to have the best of both worlds.

Thank you for this video. I'm trying to design my own baffles for my motorcycle mufflers. This was very enlightening.

Where is your next video showing how the baffle (s) sound after being installed :) Me and my husband are making a homemade muffler for our 8n tractor that has a 4cyl engine and are using 4" 304 stainless tubing for the muffler housing and 2" stainless tubing to run through the 4" tubing. I realize that that different amount of cylinders as well as other aspects will change the sound, but needed to hear the sound of the different baffles so we could have an idea of how to design our baffle.

+Journey4Sure Knowledge-N-Wisdom Back when I made this video, I could not splice different "clips" together, had to include everything I needed to show in one "take". But today I have "Movie Maker", could conceivably swap in all the different mufflers off camera and just show clips of the sound. But other videos I have with sound, the microphone in the phone or camera is overwhelmed, and the sound in the youtube movie isn't authentic. Listen to my "Dual Megaphone / Dual Stinger Baja Bug" video, you can hear the sound is very distorted. So for now I can only offer the verbal descriptions of the sound as in the video now. Thanks for the comment.

Ok you're forgiven this time but the next time you build a variety of baffles and you get a better recording system, we want to hear the sound :o)

I have a Radio Shack db meter that was about $29.. would be interesting to hear it run at various rpm and the db meter on a stand for consistent readings. Nice job.. good work. BTW what is the engine combination?

Not a bad idea. Any of these baffles make a very different sound from the just having the straight pipe, both in tone and sound intensity. The db meter would prove the greater quiet, but the tone is difficult to gauge. Ford 302 two-barrel & C4. Sounds mean but really isn't.

guidoguitar my curiosity is from having a 69 Stang CJ428 4 spd++++ that I bought in June of 1969. Back then there was a company called Trend Setter who made side pipes that AMC even offered through their dealers... Well 40+ yrs and Trend Setter has been out of business for 30 yrs I need to recreate the pipes/mufflers. Covers etc are still perfect.

10susan10 Sounds like a project. I'd like to try the spaced washers with short lengths of tube attached on the upstream side, joined together with threaded rod, like I saw in a video. The video is about 3.5 inch pipes but the same principles should apply to 3". I'd include a link but I believe links are prohibited in comments.

guidoguitar you have to break links into sections to get past the guardians...

hey bud I have a question, I have a Pontiac G8 I have been told that if I take off the stock axlebacks, and replace them with 3 inch spiral baffles would I see a performance gain you think?

Any reduction in back pressure is likely to provide a performance gain. There are many low-restriction muffler choices, but with these side pipes, I really can't go much beyond a 3" diameter pipe. Won't something bigger fit under your G8 ?

Your not giving anything away. These have been made by hot rodders since the 50s
