Animating Little Boxes at 3am
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 кві 2011
- A short little cartoon I made at 3am. I made this in a state of insomnia and procrastinating on other more important animations I'm doing. It also loops because I wanted it to feel like how I did as I listened to this on a loop for hours. Enjoy!
If you want to watch the better version go over to Newgrounds.com and watch it there. www.newgrounds.com/portal/view...

"Little boxes" song by Malvina Reynolds
Song remake by the Decemberists. - Фільми й анімація
Watched this in history class nearly 6 years ago, and what do you know it came up again today. Childhood trauma right here. I doubt I will ever forget this video, the moment when the houses come down and trap the kid is just, emblazoned in my memory. May be traumatizing, but it certainly gets the point across.
I saw this animation years ago on newgrounds for the first time. Ever since, now and then I'll be walking on the street whistling this tune. Sometimes I'll visit the video again. I think it's good to every now and then stop and look at what you're doing and like where it's going.
Oh my god, I haven't seen this animation in YEARS. Still awesome years later.
SAME
What's interesting is that even though everyone is put into their little boxes you can see that every box is a different color on the inside. Underneath all of the conditioning, expectations, and institutionalization an individual still exists beneath the mask.
**questions existence**
actually, the fact that there are houses of four colors just indicates the limited version of non-conformity allowed. You must go to school, summer camp, university, get married, have children, have a "Respectable" job-- but hey, you have a choice of four colors for your cage.
@@johnjamele By little boxes I meant the masks surrounding their heads. If you look closely you'll see that they're colored on the inside when they grab the boy at the end.
Fak
Watha fak
I thought this was gonna be a funny little video, but hell no. It got very deep. Damn.
It was animated at 3 a.m. what do you expect
I thought it was going to be a parody but love this version of the song and the animation
ouch, the edge
Imagine watching this in history class as an 11 year old. I just revisited some childhood trauma.
I really like this version of this song
And your way of drawing how you feel.
10/10
Benedicte Bakkland seriously it’s so simplistic and yet everything about the way the video was done is perfect
Man f*** you
@@juanantoniomedina5241 no, you.
ouch the edge
I'd never heard the Decemberists version of this song - it really adds an entire new layer of atmosphere to the song which was captured so well! The animation and expressions of the characters were superb!
You know what makes this scary? The truth in it.
??? What's the truth
the truth is did the scary stuff really in the video or he just make it scary @@jolenewalkingeagle3666
Yes this is the reality
Hello welcome to 2019 xD the truth is this is like the reality we in UwU
@@jolenewalkingeagle3666 The truth is that most people are just the same. We grow up ,we get a job ,we get a family and then we die. And everyone that tries to be different is critisized and put to the side.
aww man I expected like subtle changes every loop. Like that first boxhead you see is actually the kid from before, and like history repeats itself but everytime the kid keeps getting farther or something, then manages to destroy the 'university' and shit just goes up in flames or something.
Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington that would a been cool, alasd it was just originally made for new grounds
ahhhhhh yes, genocide
This video was a large part of my childhood, and watching it now in my adult life brings back so many memories
So, I finally tracked this fucking thing down after it's haunted my nightmares for the last decade.
And it's just as good as I remember.
Man it's been so long sence I've seen this. here it is 2020 and this was when I was 15
Why is this so creepy?! *Remembers this was animatied from the same guy or gal who made Skitzo the killer bear, Fibble and Sin, and S.A.H.U* oh.
Eveeloutions and Evees r da best Pokemon eva i actually met her
@@DonPatatron Despite (or perhaps because of) being 27, I also like Pokémon. But what the fuck does Eevee have to do with this?
I feel like this really drives the point of the song home. Great job!!
I show Pete Seeger's version and this one when I teach 1950s America in my APUSH class. The students are divided over which ones they like better- and I can pretty much always guess which ones will like which version.
This video is too underrated. THIS is the very definition of art in its purest farm. It's also frickin creepy. This person deserves recognition, and more than 600 views.Rebecca Black can go viral in a few days, but this has been up for a couple weeks and only has 600 views. It doesn't make sense. THIS deserves to go viral more than anything that has.
10 years later and you're still right! Deserves soooooooo many more views !
I think it would be creepier if the boxes were smiling at the end, as if to act like nothing is wrong.
"I made this in a state of insomnia"
All the best stuff are products of insomnia and insanity. :D
Perfect music for when you're writing a paper on conformity.
I just wanted to say, since Newgrounds I've loved this video version and to show it I am still listening/watching time to time over a decade later!
I LOVE YOUR VERSION!!
I learned this song in grade school, but heard it way before that on the old 'Smothers Brothers show'. That was shown with an animated version as well, but your version is sooo much better.
So.. how did it feel listening to this for hours??
All your Drawings and videos are always lovely
reminds me of pink floyd
WE DONT NEED NO EDUCATION!!!
Comick, I have always been a fan of your sense of humor, and your animations. Everything you do is awesome.
2020 and this is still awesome asf
I love this version and the video.
Very good, I love! I discover this song and you make appropriate analyse.
Good job!
Why do I love this so much?
*do I need a therapist?*
My sister didnt know why I was screeching RUN TIMOTHY at 4 am but ...
*I had a reason*
you did not brich
THROWBACK! I remember in 2011 my babysitter would always watch this video with me. I just found it again! Can't believe it.
Babysitter ? Woah isn't that too young for existentialism
Babysitter was giving u subtle hints that u gotta run while u're young...else the boxes wud get u
This is wierd but awesome at the same time. totally worth watching.
Why is James so good at tetris
xD your here from the stream.
Lol
Love it the meaning is so powerful.
Really like how the simple stick-like animation in this video develops. A good cover to this great song.
I’ve been looking for this for so long, wow it’s really been 11 years, I was 10 when this came out..
i love this version i prefer it over others awesome work!
Here from Odd1sOut livestream
BRILLIANT!! Just loved this!!
God, this animation really fits the song. Great job!
I really enjoyed this!
I thought it was going to be a really cute animation at first with the smiling houses but I was really wrong. The animation paired with the music was well done. Every symbol crash scared me a little.
1st half: Aw this is cute.
2nd: Uh..... o_o
3rd:Yay its cute again!
Final:0_0...
EXStephen there you are. Took way too long to find your comment
Loving this. I wish insomnia made me do stuff like this! Thank you for sharing.
this was kind of epic good work
I saw this animation 9-10 years ago ... eh nostalgia
*This puts a smile on my face*
this is literally amazing
I am currently writing a short excerpt for a story using this as inspiration... thanks man
I thought it was awesome dude!!! Always loved this song and heard it at the end of the box trolls movie so I decided to jump into a UA-cam black hole. Glad I did!!! :)
This is The Best One I've Seen :)
This is brilliant.
i remember watching this on newgrounds a while ago.
At first i was saying to myself "oh god this is stupid"
facial expression for the rest of the day when it changed 0-0
Then this randomly popped back into my head a day ago and i was compelled to come here and watch this awesome video!
Guy: is my box made out of me or I'm I made out of my box?
Box: yo . .
-
i watched this when i was 9 yrs old. i'm almost 17 now and decided to come rewatch. Damn
I want to see skitzo in that world
How to make this song creepier.
Replace the word "boxes" with "coffins"
Shaydys, The Shadow Queen or just slow down the speed it’s creepy af
I think that defeats the point of the song. It was a commentary on 1950s consumerism and conformity, with the "boxes" representing the houses in suburban America, which was praised as being "affluent" although conformity and deindividualization were on the rise, which ironically enough, was at the same time America was dreading the spread of communism and the conformist ideals that came with it.
man, i love it when people try to be edgy, but just come off as tacky (or is that all edgyness) edgyness edgyness
Really good Crystal Gonzalez
this is one of the greatest songs EVER
It would be nice if you do a new version of this :)
This is amazing.
I watched this when I was three years old...somehow I thought it was really cute until I re-watched it years later..
Love your drawings for this video :)
“And there’s doctors” is that too many pills
i gotta tell ya. actually watching this at 3am is a truly terrifying experience.
thats pretty awesome.
I have NO idea WHY I thought about THIS animation 10/11yrs later.
I was just going to DQ for chicken and this came into mind.
I think the first time I'd seen this was on New Grounds?
F-
First time seeing quite a lot of stuff on that site.
I find it funny how this song, which is(in part) about individualism, has been covered so many times.
You made it quite sinister! I like it actually, heh.
You're video fits so well with the song, I quite enjoy it. I also like just how dark it is, mostly just because I enjoy societies underlying psychosis.
Wow.
Fantastic.
AFTER YEARS I FOUND IT! HUZZAH!
Damn 11 years ago? It's been that long? I remember having nightmares about growing up when I first heard this now I'm like ok I guess but damn this is a classic.
pretty same
3:12 when I’m stuck on a frustrating level in a video game
This is the perfect invisionment for me of this song, i thought of sheep when i heard it. - but this animations truely brilliant.
loved this so much it is amazing but oh so very freaky
D8 So creepy yet so awesome. Yay for social commentary!
I watched this when I was like 7 when this first came out and I was scarred since ngl. No boxes for me mate
really good and true ....
This should have a lot more views!!! XP
I guess the boy thought "outside" the box eyyyy
funny and so true at the same time
love the "The Thing" bit
That's made my Afternoon........Wait.
i think im starting to understand what this song is all about, of how life in the suburbs is just a big cycle
I love this
Dude i watched this when i was like 6 or 7 years old because i loved the song and i finally found the video that haunted my nightmares
I knew I shouldn't have trusted this
feels good
AMAZING Best Song Ever
It was cute in the first place, but in the ending or something... CREEPY
This should have more views, i mean it was on front page at newgrounds.
I love this song. :D
Apparently 5 people were converted into Ticky Tacky also awesome song and this is one of the few songs that yet give me hope for humanity
BRUTAL.
dont know if you pay attention to comments on this 2011 vdeo. just wanted to say you got the imagery of this cover perfectly
You're thinking of Hoovervilles, which we're actually shanty towns built by the homeless and unemployed. They named them after Hoover, whom they partially blamed for the Great Depression. I don't know about the conformity though.
LOVE IT
I thought that the Levittown structure was primarily due to how much one could save for following a cookie cutter house template (it's still used today) and that it was actually appealing since it offered a sense of safety and order in a somewhat chaotic Cold War/ McCarthy era.
If I lived in that town, I would be so scared and try to leave at all costs no matter what.
Order and entropy, a never ending cycle.
Or there are 4 archetypes and all the boxes fit those 4 categories.
And in general if they are all similar except for color then they can be considered similar or "the same"
awesome
