"I am Clark Kent, I need to be Clark Kent. I will go crazy if I am Superman all the time". Favorite line from this episode. I loved the mystery style storytelling for this episode. The investigative reporter and Clark Kent wanting to be the hero to save an innocent man. This was suppose to be Clark Kent's victory. When I saw this episode I immediately thought Detective Bowman can't be trusted. Everytime he just kept brushing off the case. The animation in this episode was really good. Certain episodes for Superman: TAS has this kind of animation very stylized, grander and there are other times it's very simple animation. Also in this episode you get the very first tease of Lois Lane really caring about Clark Kent, regrets teasing him, had respect for him. It was that foreshadowing tease of Lois and Clark's relationship.

Yes, Kal was really hoping to doing something great without superpowers, just investigative journalism. Then his plan/dream got ruined with a dirty cop planting bombs. If they didn't have the awkward love triangle ending, Lois could have told Clark he was right and doing great investigating 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

@@RJ_Cormac my headcanon is that Clark was able to get the credit that was due to him for finding the evidence that cleared Walker, if only by setting events in motion that would lead to the real killer being exposed, it would be Clark's victory as in finding that pizza place and scrolling through what may have been thousands of orders, names and addresses would have been something that his superpowers wouldn't be able to help much with.

IMO, my fav STAS episode in the series. Mature storytelling, great pacing, fluid animation, and great writing. I always prefer episodes that focus on characters/dialogue (like Two-Face Part 1) over ones solely focused on action. Just an amazing episode.

I do love this episode. It’s easy for people to forget that under all his muscle, Superman does actually have a brain (I’m looking at you, Frank Miller), but here, we have him in a film noir style story, so it’s on full display here. I also love Lois admitting to having feelings for Clark.

I love this episode as it shows that Superman can be every bit the detective that Batman is
(which makes more sense than people realize, given Clark Kent is an investigative journalist.)
In fact, I used this episode as reference for how we finally can get a GOOD Superman videogame,
IF they go with a more "Telltale Batman" style where gameplay is split between Clark Kent and Superman.

You need to review Batman Beyond and there is an episode which featured the assassin Curare "A Touch of Curaré. In that episode there is a scene between older Barbara Gordon and Terry McGinis where Barbara tells Terry about how Bruce's true identity is Batman and he just couldn't give up being batman. One of the best lines from that episode when older Barbara Gordon says to Terry about Bruce by saying "I don't hate him, I hate what he has become. Such a great man so alone".

This is definitely in my top 3 favorite episodes in this series for many of the same reasons you stated. For me personally, there's also I suppose a nostalgic element to it as well. I remember when this episode first aired. I caught it from the beginning and it really resonated with me. I enjoy stories about superheroes who are forced, or who choose to arrest their superhero persona in favor of their true or secret identities. I always enjoy the human element it brings to these larger-than-life figures.
Anyway, at about the halfway mark, shortly after Clark is "killed," a bad storm that had been raging outside that day had knocked out the power and I never got to finish the episode. I'd never forgotten the parts of it I'd seen and was really hoping to catch it again in reruns to finally see how it ends. Sadly, it wasn't until about a decade later (when the series was rolled out on DVD) that I'd finally gotten to see it in full. The anticipation gave way to satisfaction as I found that it held up very well and that it was just as good an episode as I remembered it to be, if not better.
On another note, it's perhaps one of the darkest episodes in the series, in my opinion. What cartoon show features death row and ends with a criminal being executed? I mean, many people die in this show (all of Krypton, and 2 other ancillary characters who play key roles, not to spoil anything), but no one is executed, by the good guys, no less. It's the one death in the series that comes to mind that has no element of fantasy or sci-fi.

I love noir, but for me the best episodes of this and BTAS are the ones that center more on morality, hero and villain. Superman and Batman always have to hold themselves back from becoming just as bad as those they fight. It's a constant battle with temptation. When this is contrasted with a villain, like Batman with Lockup or Superman with Mala and Jax-Ur, the hero sees just how far they could fall if they're not careful.
I remember reading somewhere that Superman didn't choose to be a journalist just to maintain his secret identity. Rather being a journalist is a way to challenge himself. Sure his powers may help him get information, but they don't help in writing a good article. Being a journalist for him is like people who speedrun games, it's a fun challenge for him.

    • @AndyKnode
      @AndyKnode  5 років тому

I do like the stories around the internal struggle for the hero.
I had not heard that but that makes a lot of sense, no super strength can help him write, that's pretty cool.

This is a very well written episode, I love how it gets ibto Sherman's thinking. Sometimes you want to be superman, sometimes you just wanna be an average guy.
Important question however: how is it that the Detective got the death penalty!? Corruption and attempted murder gets you the chair? Maybe Superman ought to deal with metropolis' draconian justice system LOL

Maybe there was a time lapse and he was convicted of murdering Clark Kent, before he could get to Lana with a lost at sea head injury story. 🤔
Or Kal let him die to protect his identity! Either way this makes Kal-El complacent in letting him be executed! 😲

It's definitely got a tone that's comparable to Batman but I eased my guilt surrounding the whole 'one of my favourite STAS episodes is more like BTAS than usual which isn't fair because this show is also great' by remembering that a lot of the best elements of this episode are ones that would never work in a batman story- Bruce can't really (in theory) survive what Clark can for one and that's such a big part of this ep

The late Mr Kent is my personal favourite episode it shows for me proof that the theory that many fans (and Bill from Kill Bill) have is actually false, that superman is the true identity and Clark Kent is the disguise when in fact it's the other way around, Clark was Clark long before he was superman he adopted the guise of superman specifically so that people wouldn't figure out that he was Clark Kent.
Another is that helping Walker is something that Clark does deserve credit for as tracking down the pizza place and spending hours trolling through the computer records isn't something that his superpowers would make any easier, Clark wanted it to be Clark Kent's victory and rightly so.
If I have one nitpick about this episode (and it's only a little one) it's the way Clark brought himself back from the dead, simply saying he survived the bomb that blew his car to pieces with injuries that only required bandages and bed rest raises the obvious question, HOW? the killer spends his entire time on death row mulling it over and with his last thoughts figures it out. A better way might have been to simply be thus
Lois "CLARK? how on earth did you survive that car bomb?"
Clark "superman heard the car ticking, x-rayed it and saw a bomb under the seat and pulled me out before it blew, he then advised me to lay low with someone I trust absolutely (old childhood sweetheart Lana who's known him since kindergarten) for a while as if the bomber knew I'd survived he might try again and if you, Jimmy or Perry knew you all could be in danger too but no one would think to look for me at Lana's place"
I doubt anyone would question that explanation as that's just the sort of thing superman would do, save people in danger and because in identity crisis Lois had seen what she thought was Clark and superman (actually bizarro)side by side (and supposedly rescuing Clark) she certainly wouldn't question it but again it doesn't bother me that much just enough that I could think of an alternative.
