Zouken plays his role perfectly he's made to be completely deplorable & exceeds at it while also being a very well written character in the process just like Danzo & Mahito
i agree except Danzo was responsible for so many things that it feels like a plot hole that he didn't get charged with treason.
I wouldnt call Danzo well written.
A lot of their characterization and logic is absurdly inconsistent.
He seems more like a deus ex then a fully fleshed out and realized villain. Too much of what he did doesnt feel like it served him or his intent in any capacity, and the writing never explcitly tries to lean into writing him as being a malicious or inconsistent character so it just comes across as the author just putting him in positions to be hated by the audience even though it makes no sense for the character.
Good Idea, Horrible Writing
Nasu cooked Zouken too hard that we hate him, and that was the whole point, so Zouken is indeed underappreciated. That man made me realize I had more hate in my heart than my self hatred.
zouken is fuyuki's palpatine, i like this evil rascal.
And Saber is Anakin, as Zouken and Palpatine corrupted them, turning them in Saber Alter and Darth Vader respectively.

Though that i imagined Shirou more like Obi Wan Kenobi than Luke Skywalker. While that Mordred could fits as Luke for be the lost son of Salter and Vader respectively.
This is why fate is so amazing it has so many characters to deep dive in and so many questions and small details that were unsolved.
Zouken is Danzo. An old man just makes things worse.

Zouken is that one villain people love to hate for a very good reason while being well written complicated villain that is one of the reasons why we have Heaven's Feel route.

Let me just say, the man who became immortal, near all powerful, belongs to the death apostle race, and has done feats that made the world come so far, seems like the next chill old dude in the room compared to the maniac that Zouken is.
He was my one of my favorite characters in Zero. Felt he was underutilized in the other routes, because he just didn't care, he was just gonna wait til the next HGW and the movies don't do him much justice.
I think seeing him during the 1st HGW will shine some light on this character who has only ever worked in the shadows... to the point he doesn't exist.
I like Zouken as a character because he succeeds at his purpose in UBW, HF, and Zero to be an evil, sadistic puppetmaster whose shadow secretly looms over everything. Man is so twisted from his original altruistic goals that he understands what he's doing is terrible, and enjoys the suffering that follows. I think his character serves as a study in horrific means (the worms) warping and poisoning a well-meaning end. I think part of the point of Zouken is that our goals are important, but so is your methodology to achieve them.
I'd love to see how different the old man Zouken is compared to him in his prime. In a way I think it would be a lot like Shirou and Heroic Spirit Emiya where the core of the person is the same "evil" but how they move would be completely different and what they tolerate. Not sure if it's ever stated but I would fully believe he refined torturing his descendants as a pastime to feed his sadism but not so horrible they they break on the first try but sontinue to stuggle so he gets the most entertainment from them with they still being subservient to him.
In his prime he was an idealist to the same level as Kiritsugu, except without the patricide. He began running his long slip down the slope of rationality when he forced himself to go along with the Einzbern’s plan for the Grail Ritual, which called for the sacrifice of the woman he most loved. He then forced himself to keep living to see her dream come to fruition, but his magecraft and life-extending spells all rely on very sketchy methods that corrupted his soul as time went on.
Maybe at one point Zolgen Makiri was a redeemable person, but that stopped being true hundreds of years before the story of Stay Night.
By then, he was a monster, a plague, and he needed to die. They even explicitly say his soul was corrupted by his method of immortality.
In my opinion goetia was the best villain in fate series so far you should make about video about him!
Zouken is under appreciated because Kirei slaps in every single category.

The fact that he's "inside" Sakura is so fucked up to me on so many levels. He violated a near toddler with the worms 🪱 (emote popped up decided to use it for effect), knew she was getting sexualy assaulted by his multi generational grandson (so I guess by this point Shinji is just some sort of weak magikless spawn), and then makes a plan to high-jack her body at which point dude is literally shown to be a worm 🪱 which the original design was made out to look like a dick
So this dude not only a dick of a person but also has their final form be that of a dick-worm
Like you can't get any more vile
And that's just the tip of the iceberg after acknowledging that he may have very well have been inside her while she was getting assaulted just adding layers of bullshit to this guy
He always was a weak magicless person to be used as a pawn just like his father Byakuya. It was why Zouken adopted Sakura and abused her. He also abused Shinji as well and Shinji took his dad telling him to not do magic or dive into it as an attack and still studied when he could have escaped like Kariya.

Zoken is the type of character who is intimating and disgusting at the same time. And his character made me hate him too much. But I can say if a charater can make them hate them then they are a good character like that Pink headmaster from Harry Potter or Homelander from The Boys
Dolores Umbridge.
I hope we get zouken as a servant in fgo where we can see him when he was good and his wish for the grail is to correct his future mistakes to redeem his family name and legacy.

Imo, Zoken IS the main villain. He feels that way to me atleast. He just did different stuff on the 3 routes.
Zouken largely engenders disgust. Everything about him down to his very physical make-up is pretty disgusting. His characterization, design, and vocal performance are all wildly successful in depicting someone you'd really not want in your life if you could help it. Thing is, if we're being honest, fandoms tend to avoid such figures. He ain't sexy, he ain't charismatic, no one even does the "Zouken did nothing wrong" as a meme. None of which makes him a poor character, but he's never going to be a popular one.
For me, i never liked zouken, i didn't want to understand and didn't care to understand

Zouken reminds me a lot like Voldemort. Really hard to kill with complicated motives, but my we all know are both evil. Both lurk mostly in the shadows and do cruel things to people that ally with them.

Am I one of the few people that feels like reallt bad for Shinji? His home life was likely hellish and he is terrified of his grandpa. 😩
However I’ve only watched fsn, zero, and ubw so maybe ge gets like way worse in other stories.
The way Zouken is directly and sorta internationally written as a Evil and Disgusting character kinda ruins it a bit if it was less intense and more natural it would have been a bit better (form me).
To be honest, Fate Stay Night was an incomplete visual novel. Had Nasu had more time to develop the story and didn't drop or discard the other routes, then the visual novel would be complete.
