Full Build: Building the Ultimate Sleeper Out of a 1977 Ford Granada That Turns 7500 RPM!

- We heard about a 1977 Granada with a low miles, but several mechanical issues. We wanted to build a ride that looks like a Sunday driver… but runs like a Super Stocker when you open up the throttle! We’ll give it a stroked 347ci Small Block Ford, valvetrain that will turn 8000 RPM, and a shot of nitrous for BIG power. Then… we take our 500+hp Sleeper to the streets!

You started with probably the nicest Granada coupe still in existence, and the results are pretty doggone fantastic.
I have a 79. In green
Hard to find a decent one, really really hard.
@@boxcarent.3147 Yes, I had a Navy Blue 78 2-Door Grenada in high school. Graduated in 85 and sold it. Tried to find one a couple of years back and $5k would only get you a 4-door still bent around a telephone pole. Just insane.
@@lunarvvolf9606 Check out sleeperdude if you want to see cars that nobody would ever think could be saved made derivable again.
Ford, Chevy and Dodge he saves them all.
I spent a lot time cramming screws in holes in the Granada Monarch assemblys
I loved every aspect of this build, it was nothing flashy like a mustang or a camaro and it was a completely unique perspective on what a sleeper can be. Well done pat and frankie, hope to see you guys do more builds like this!
😊😊
Incredible specimen for restoration.
Absolutely!!
Its a "Fox chassis" just like a Mustang. The "upgrades" will cost you the exact same but there are far fewer of them "cosmetically". This is a $1,500 car you can dump $15,000 in and not increase the "book value" a dime.
@@deeremeyer1749 This is not a Fox chassis. It is from the earlier Falcon chassis family. Fox Granadas weren't made until 1981
I can't believe that car was that clean & just sitting in a field !
On a C4, upshift point is accomplished by turning the adjustment screw inside the modulator at the back of the transmission. If you need more adjustment range, replace the modulator rod with a different length.
Wonderful episode. Loved it.
tempting not to use C6.......... shift harder........but the added weight,.....
@@jamesdemestihas9904 ...and more horsepower waste with the C-6.
Cant they just manually shift the transmission @ the Rpm they want?
Yes, there's making some adjustments and parts changes to change shift points, true...and then there's installing a full manual reverse valve body that also cannot be SEEN from outside or inside the car. ;)
I think Pat still has some room in that shirt pocket for more pens and items.
ROFLMAO 😃😃😅😅
Per ASE Code, he has the minimum requirements. But 4.1.2 say he can add more if space allows... BAHAHA
😂😂😂
Because of pat I don't let anyone work on my car that doesn't have at least 3 pens and a pencil in their shirt pockets
He's probably got a key chain on his belt loop that has 50 keys on it
Hahahah omf that’s funny 😆
I really like it when you release these full builds. Instant gratification.
Agreed
my first car was a '79 Granada. Worked all summer at 16 to make the $650. Loved that car! had electric windows, seat, sunroof, factory cb radio, 8 track. The 302 smoked a little but it was a champ, I did multiple 500 mile road trips.
...was that the Grand Ghia? In '75 and '76 there was a car called the Grand Ghia. Every bit a Cadillac.
Had a 77 silver one, great car.
We are the same age. Got my 79 granada when i was 16. But mine was a 250 inline six. Loved it to death
I remember the original granada commercials. That guy is still singing that song in my head.
Fellas that's a GREAT build !! No turbo, no juice ! DAM !
This was a fun one. You couldn't ask for a better sleeper candidate and we can tell the guys had fun doing those little extras to keep it looking like grandma's church car. It was unique too. There are only so many Camaros, Mustangs, and Chargers you can see before you start feeling like you're watching reruns. Cool series and a damn cool car.
Except for the idle, of course..😂😅
Absolutely love this build! More Ford projects please!
Yeah, really, no argument from me. I enjoyed the 300 build. My dad bought a brand new F-150 in '81 when my brother and I were kids; bought me a new EFI '90 F-150 with a 300 in it when I was a young man. Loved that truck more than my my dad's mainly because of the fuel injection.
For a 45 year old car it looks great and the old engine didn't sound all that bad. Good to see old iron surviving. Hello from Australia 👍
not original 302CI, this is a built 347CI
@@grantkoeller8911 I meant before they changed it.
I'm with you on that, grew up with these old Ford's.
It was really disappointing to see they just changed the engine. I really thought they were going to rebuild it.
@@kevincostello3856powder blue ! Lol yeh there was a bunch of these ol girls running the roads when I was young in the mid 70’s(what a time)
If you're looking for a Rockauto commercial with a bit of Ford Granada thrown in, you've come to the right place!
Watching Pat and Frankie working together is awesome. Even though Pat has a lot more experience then Frankie there is no ego flexing going on. Frankie does know his stuff even though he is quite a bit younger then Pat. I think the knowledge between the two compliments each other.
To me it's a little annoying. Bad chemistry.
In 1977, my boss man at work had a new Granada. I was taking night classes after work at a community college 20 miles away. My car was having reliability problems and he was kind enough to offer his new Granada to me so I wouldnt miss classes. Though I only used it two times, that Granada was a very nice car! It was smooth, quiet and comfortable! I had no idea that it was underpowered because I babied it and treated it with respect! Im happy that you folks decided to save and upgrade that somewhat obscure model Ford, Great job!
I graduated 🎓 high school in1979. This was the car your parents drove not something a teen wanted .I have to admit it has aged well and I would love to have one 😎
In the late seventies, my grandpa owned a '77 Granada hardtop coupe with the 235 straight six and a three speed auto. I'm not much a Ford guy, but I loved that car from my childhood. This sleeper, brings back memories, and is one of my favorite projects from Power Nation.
Back in the day, my Ford car salesman buddy drove a sharp 2 door metallic red Ford Grenada demonstrator with white interior, V8, 4 speed manual...
My grandmother had one of those cars with the six cylinder and I was shocked when I drove it and I couldn't even get it to spin the wheels in the sand. People in Volkswagen Beetles laughed at that car's power.
@@BuzzLOLOL I would love to have seen that car! Would have been a great time with the 4 speed manual transmission.
They never had a 235 straight 6. They only came with a 200,250 straight 6s. Not sure where you came up with 235🤷♂️
@@faststang85 - Yeah, 235 was the Chevy straight 6 with more HP than Ford V8's...
A 1977 Ford Granada base model was my very first new car. Straight 6, 4 speed manual overdrive, after market air conditioner. Wish I still had it! Great on gas, smooth ride, quiet, quality build.
Watching this REALLY made me appreciate the genius of Derek from VGG!
STEP 1: check the boot and cabin for parts.
Who would suspect a 77 Granada as a monster speed machine sleeper? Nobody. The NASA valve setup, wow. The exhaust bypass, genius. I felt like a kid again watching this. I was a gear head and constantly buying, rebuilding and trading up with pickups and motorcycles as a teen. This old man LOVED this video guys! Great job.
Loved this episode! My first car was a 1977 Ford Granada with a rebuilt 302 bored .30 with a four barrel carb, mild cam, and heads from a 289 hi-po V8...it was a great car! Miss it to this day!
I bet that thing was fun with the compression bump and 4 barrel.
@@bradleyhanlon It was a zippy fun car...I do miss it
I remember the 70s when you could turn the top of the air filter upside down eliminating any restriction but still having the paper filter in place. Even if it didn't add much power, it sounded great.
Did that a few times!
Worked at Hertz rent a car in late 70s. We a crap load of these Grenades (as we called them) But I always thought it would make a killer sleeper so I was thrilled to see this. Also had Fairmont's so thought the 2 door Futura might be cool but too weak of a Unibody. Thank you for making my youth come true.
Owned a stock white '80 Ghia in the mid '80s. Enjoyed everything about it. Had to give it up after I got married. Would have put in a 390 built up to a 454 if I'd kept it. Wanted to replace the stock mags an with a set of Ford 15" Continental ones that looked like the originals. With some low profile tires it would have kept the stock appearence. I will be watching more of your videos.
As a teen boy with access to alot of car culture back then, I went down memory lane with this story. These cars were not taken seriously but I have always loved the look of them. `Everything that was classy from ford went into the looks dept. of this model . Those were the days my friend !! Thanks to you guys for the production too!
Granada's are totally classic now!!! Prices are going up!!!
My parents had a tan 1977 Ford Granada in the early 1980s, and I'll never forget it with good memories as the first car I ever remember my parents having
Had one of these in High School. Loved working on the Old Monarch and throwing Edelbrock parts into that 302.
This is so cool! My best friend had a Granada ESS ( It had the 5.0 motor in it) The motor went up and he and his father put a 351 Windsor under the hood. Man that thing was fast! That was around 1985.
The 351 W was an option on Granada/Monarchs on 1975-77 models. The 302 was the largest motor available from 1978-80.
Absolutely loved your old school sleeper build on the 77 Granada! Thanks for taking me back to my early days.
My grandma had a ‘77 Granada in banana yellow. This sleeper build hit home with me. I couldn’t stop watching this build. Great!!
This car in black with this build.... Man, ultimate gangster
Never saw a granada as a youngster in the 90s in the USA. It looks like a "crown vic compact" to me.. thats a clean ride
I had a 76 and a 81 Granada. One a 200 and the other a 250 6-cylinder. Both 4 doors. Always wanted a 302. Great cars for the time and decent gas mileage. Shawn from Indy.
My 1st car when I was 16 back in '06 was a 1976 Granada Ghia 2 door. It had a 302 2bbl with a C4 & open 8" after I was done building it in my shop class (dad was the teacher) it had a mild 351W 4bbl , stage2 rebuilt C4 with a 2800 stall torque converter & a GM posi track. God I miss that car, this vid hits the heart strings
One of the biggest selling cars in the 70's.
I really do appreciate the fact that you used assembly lube, ornate it and you talked everything down that takes real patience. So far everything that you’ve done is right so it’s gonna turn out good. I enjoy people who take pride in the work that they do.
It's a 302, lots of easy performance things to do
By far my favorite build on this channel! 👍🏻
Right!, a nice practical build that is not all stupid and nice interior
@@lazynow1 Exactly!
My grandmother had a 79 ghia 4 door with the 6. It was silver with the 8 track player. That door buzzer brought back a ton of memories of that car.
7 minutes in, and I'm already in LOVE !!
In the 90s my buddy had a black 4 door Ghia model w red leather interior and a 351. God it was a sweet car. Still had the factory stickers on the valve covers. Beat a C3 vette with it once!
As a kid of about 17 I worked in a full service gas station and picked up parts every day in that exact model Granada. It's some of the best memories I have of learning to drive. Mechanics at the Shell station I worked at had hopped-up and put a great tune on the motor. The car was fast, we named it zoomer
I bought a used ‘77 Granada in the late 80’s as my ‘beater’ car. Mint with Low miles. Wish I still had it. Loved that car!! I’d buy one like this one in a heartbeat!!
What an awesome build. Probable one of my favorite episodes.
YES! I built one of these in the early 90's. Totally stock looking on the outside but had a brutal drive train. My car was even the same color. Burnt Orange.
Classy old car, in great shape, done sleeper-proper, looks, drives and performs great with tricks up it's sleeves...PERFECT. My family had a light navy blue '77 Granada when I was a kid, I drove it all over when I was 15 (daytime only). I would definitely drive a sleeper Granada like that and mess with old-school Camaros, Mustangs, Dusters, Firebirds, El Caminos, Darts, GTO's, Chevelles and Barracudas on the street. ;)
Great Build, brings back memories. My Mother, God rest her soul had silver Mercury Monarch she let me drive to high school. Burgundy leather with the sun roof.. 😀
I want to see a 4 door 80’s caprice sleeper or a New Yorker sleeper built on the same level! Something for the everyday gear head to appreciate! Love this build
I am 60 years old so I well remember the Ford Granada, not exactly one of my dream cars while I was growing up. I have to say this is a nice example and the factory 8 track cracked me up. It is a shame to camouflage what was a nice looking engine, especially those cylinder heads. I love the difference in the exhaust noise, this car is a true sleeper.
They hit the nail on the head when they mentioned Maverick.
Sweet memories come to mind of the '77 Granada we were cruising back in High School '91. The best ditch-mobile ever.
We raised a lot of hell in that car. This build is like something we'd always imagine, joked about doing back then.
My buddy had a "tweaked" 77 Granada V8 back in 1980 and it screwed
Freakin' SWEET! One of the best "sleeper" car builds I've EVER seen! Love you guys and THANKS!
Nice sleeper build ! I was surprised to hear that the Granada weighs 3800 lbs , you guys turned a 70s grocery getter into a cruise night fun ride !
Me too. Put that thing on a diet and then get after it.
I'd like to see them do something similar to a Ford Fairmont. Definitely not my favorite car, but lighter than Tank Granada! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My 1st car was a '77 Granada 4 door. Black with red vinyl top/interior and a "302". My buddies all referred to her as "Granny". They used to refer to her as a "big old boat", but I explained that in '77, it was considered a midsized car. Also, the "BIG 302" was a small V8 back then....LoL
Now that the floor is precisely massaged… lol😂
I was surprised at just how little you guys had to do to get it started. I miss the days before "check engine" lights, when everything was controlled by mechanical linkages
I had bought my very first car with the money I had saved from working on weekends while still in high school. I paid $500.00 for it. I bought it from my dad's mechanic buddy. Even though the old V8 had a blown engine my dad's buddy said he's repair the engine for $500.00. The guy told my dad he would bore the engine out to .030 of an inch. He new rings, bearings, the whole works. He even Put a hotter cam in it. We put some headers on it and some other go fast parts that I don't remember. But that little red Granada had about 275 RWHP. For a 15 year old kid. That was just enough hp to have a lot of fun with. I will never forget that Granada out running my cousins a brand new 1982 Toyota Supra. Good times in that car.
I owned a 1977 Granada 4DR deluxe with 302, C4, AC, PS, 8 Track, and a special order that year a 2.47:1 rear end. Got tremendous fuel mileage on the road with 3 kids, but not a lot of power! Bought the car in 1978n with 12,000 miles on after trading in my 1973 Dodge Sport 318.
I just discovered your channel and really enjoyed this build. I believe my dad had a 1975 Granada with a 302. The 70s were some rough years for performance after the factory hotrods of the 60s. The conscious effort to reduce emissions began then and Ford reduced compression and introduced EGR making the 302 , 2 V a whopping 130 HP. When you took the car on the road , I recognized roads and buildings in the area. I live about an hour from you and over the course of 25 years spent a good bit of time there with my work. Like they say, it's a small world.
This build ticks so many boxes. I love a high reving sleeper ❤
I am Not a Ford Fan but I do Appreciate Great Work when I see it. I would definitely drive this. I like it! Keep up the great work.
Guys Could you Please Put me in your Will lol. Love Dads old Car. I wish you could see Dads Old Granada ! Same Car but red. You made him Proud. Thank you
Great job guys, I could never imagine someone turning a Granada into a stock car. I'm a machinist formerly from Cleveland OH in Summit racings is a local company in our back yard,.
I owned a Granada, and it almost felt as stable as a Ford model -T driving down the road. The ford Maverick was much closer to the ground and seemed more suitable for stock car racing.
Thanks for posting good content!
Love this! Projects like these will bring me back for sure!
The rack on the back makes it a true sleeper.
No doubts, that beast is gorgeous!!
Amazing job with this build!
70's cars are VERY often overlooked since they came from the era of crazy smog regulations and the gas and oil crisis. But look close enough and you'll find they can have a lot of potential, as you guys have proven here. I have an '82 El Camino, which came out at the tail end of that era and they're nowadays getting the respect and love they deserved. With the earlier muscle cars having become rather unattainable to the average guy, the Granada and other cars like it may have their day in the near future! Really liked this sleeper build, hope to see more like this from you guys in the future!
My mom bought a Mercury Monarch in 1974 which is the same car with a few upgrades especially the hood ornament which was round instead of squarish and that alone added an elegance factor. White with red interior was awesome. Same v8 and it was the best new car value at that time. We loved it.
I had a couple of those car's in the 90s and I installed a cam lifters dual exhaust and a 4 barrel carburator, lower gears in the rear and it flipped me and several others out with how strong it ran lol. I put 8" rim's all the way around it with 70 series tires on the front and 60 series 15 inch tires and rim's all the around it so it would appear to be a stock vehicle, it had plenty of pep and then some lol. I loved playing around with people in it cause nobody ever done anything with em except drive until they most usually just fell apart...That's a nice looking car and you don't see em anymore cause nobody saved em. I's always interested in different types of vehicles that nobody wanted and I paid like 150 bucks for each car on different occasions. The lite blue on blue one is the one I went all out on cause it had low miles, so I figured why not lol. Those were like Fords small or midsized luxury car and even with the upgrades I done to it, it still road smooth and run really good lol...
My friend had an old Granada SST. Never knew it existed. He needs to do what you guys did.
I got a 4 door. It's a sweet ride 😎
Wow, I absolutely love this project. Being a Ford fan helps of course and the fact that I used to hot rod a Maverick with a 302 4spd. That Granada being 3800 lbs, you can shave 1000 lbs off that by putting that 347 into a Maverick or Comet. Fun fun
Good luck finding a skinny bumper maverick. Those, and 66 back Mustangs are good candidates for the 347, anything else a 393w would fit! Or, a 408! Noone will believe that's a 302 anyway!
the grenada as a sleeper is a great tip. I love these guys " getting out of the shop. " Having said that after so many " will it run and drive channels " ( Vice Grip Garage is the grand-daddy ) it is hilarious these guys go to pick up a " used " car that is actually newer-than-new. As far as the motor, use the motor that came with it and improve it rather than always putting in a bigger gas-guzzler. This car was super ugly to me in the day but now it is " a classic. "
Every car back in the day was a BOX; but now that boxes have been replaced by jellybeans, boxes are the rare ones, lol !!
They couldn't do much with the engine that was in it to start with. It was already bored .060, and that's as far as you can go with those. Made sense for them to use a stroker they had from another project and toss it in instead.
I had one that looked just like this. My wife had a 1977 white Granada. I liked the way they looked and drove.
A supercharged coyote in this thing is going to beast mode this old classic.
I didn't really care for these pre-foxbody Granadas but this one is so clean I can't help but like it. You should put a good buff and wax on it tho.
Please finish dialing it in and take it to a 1/4 mile track so we can see some ETs.
Exactly. What does 9.27 sec @ 73.3 mph translate into as far as 1/4 mile?
I gotta admit that even with the full exhaust, without the cutouts opened, this engine inthe grenada makes a lot better horsepower than what it originally started out with
Got married in 1980. Brother-in-law loaned us his brand new Ford Grenada for our honeymoon to Padre Island Texas from Oklahoma. Sweet ride, sweeter honeymoon!
Sorry about the short comment but I wanted to say that you and Pat did a smashing awesome job on the Spicy Grenada and the homemade custom permanent brackets and custom headers just impress me and at my age I don't impress much. Your build is right up the alley to get the job done and most of all better than most and that's what got me happy with the build of the car. Great day today and Good morning to you all.
Great build, one of your best video's yet. You two work together well and are knowledgeable and entertaining. 7 seconds in the 1/8 mile converts High tens or 11 in the quarter. Ya gotta love a sleeper, especially with those flip of a switch exhaust cutouts. The luggage rack on the trunk is fantastic. I'm curious how much it would gain by ditching that factory air cleaner just for the track. Also would be interesting to put a ram air vent onto that factory air cleaner, many cars from that time period had what looked like dryer vent hose routed to the grill for cool air intake, you wouldn't lose the stock look that way.
on target.
Mid 6 in 1/8 is about mid to high 10s in 1/4
@@michaelbower2117 right, this car would be more like a 11.3 in the quarter.
I love late 70's and 80's cars. I prefer GM, but I'd definitely take a car like this
Agree with the other comments , just want to say it was nice to see a build that didn’t go for the LS swap you see on every other show.
Nice the first car I ever owned when I was a teenager one day when the lord allows me would owned one again great build
Probably my favorite sleeper car video ever, great job and very thorough.I can’t help to think about how it would gave run in the quarter with a stick shift though.
I wonder where they ordered the parts from?
Submit and Rock auto, arp, and more.
@@adammiller6606 Woosh, right over your head.
Awesome video. I used to ride in a friend's Granada, and I never thought it could be made into a sleeper. That thing is sick. I want to build one myself now.
I have a 1980 ford Granada with a 302 and almost no modifications. I know it barely pushes 100 hp but it still feels quick. My first real classic car and I’m in love with it
Love the small block Ford build, I presently own a 97 Ranger with a 3.0 Vulcan I always wanted to give it bump for more performance but even though the V6 is similar to an old style 302 it doesn't have much available for performance upgrades. Great sleeper
Yeah, Bump Woo! 🇺🇸
There's a company that makes supercharger mounts for the Vulcan. I think it uses the Eaton M90 from the Thunderbird Super Coupe.
You could always swap in a 302. Some Explorer models had a 302 from the late 90s to the early 2000s. It would be a pretty easy swap because of how much Explorers and Rangers had in common in those years.
Still was an enjoyable video, and like your parts supplier as I too use them and have found them to be the best on the web for the shade tree mechanic. Way to go Rock Auto.
Pat is that neighbor that walks up when your doing a simple water pump swap and somehow talks you into a motor swap
This makes me miss my '80 Fairmont even more.
Dang it.
Nice to see the dyno comparisons of engine dyno vs in the car with restrictions. Don't think I've ever seen that much of an apples to apples comparison.
Very nice build, tastefully done. If anything I'd do differently, I'd do the tires with the raised white letters showing on the outside.
So good to see perf articles on the beloved Blue Ovals.
This car brings back good memories of my moms Granada, I really like that car back in the day.
I had a '76 same color and interior except it had a straight 6. I would have never thought you could get that lead sled to do 7's. Bravo gents!
I REALLY like that car, great build and please in the pursuit of higher speeds don't do anything to mess up it being a nice street car. One thing that you could do to make it even more stealthy is whitewall tires. It IS a Ghia so it should have whitewalls.
I had a gray 78 2 door Granada, mine was an El Chepo Grande model with the six and a four speed... yes, there was such a thing as a stick shift Granada. Second best car I ever had.
I would have mounted the tires with the lettering facing outside, the car's height does betray it's souped up and finally IMHO if you're not a strip racer then the NO2 kit is overkill... other than that you did an *awesome* job.
Oh and my first car was the Granada's sibling, a '77 four door Mercury Monarch with the 302 engine. Good times.
Maybe next time they'll get you to pay for their next build. Then your opinion will matter.
You're most generous.
Nothing like making an awesome moonshine rig. This is just kick ass, haha.
Absolutely love this build!! Just curious though, since you went through the trouble of running the Holley and all of the sensors/dash etc, why not just run a throttle body and injectors and go efi? You’re about 90% there…Just a thought. This car would hurt some feelings on the street for sure.
Yeah, it would have been cool if they used a 90s mustang/f150 5.0 or 5.8 with the speed density EFI. Then they could’ve run an aftermarket ECU and boosted it with a turbo or centrifugal supercharger. There’s a guy in the next town over from mine with a pretty cool 4 door ‘90-ish Crown Vic EFI with a pro charger. Talk about a sleeper. The thing rips lol
For such a low mileage example that is in great condition, it's a shame the original engine block wasn't used. It would have been better if it had matching numbers IMO.
Yeah, I was surprised about the decision not to use the original engine block considering this is such an OG car.
