My friend Eric McFadden is not only a great electric guitar player and singer, he’s also a great flamenco guitar player. Here, he shows us his approach to Jimi Hendrix’s Manic Depression, wrestling his Strat like it’s a wild animal, but also check out his crazy acoustic flamingo guitar licks!

Stumbled across this .. Eric played on the first album of a band I played with called Saddlesores and one night we both played lead/rhythm guitar on stage together at Sonny’s Bar .. I felt elevated playing with him .. like I was able to be better because he was so far beyond me yet he was sharing the spaces and pulling me along with him.., it was pretty magical from what some of the (drunkish) friends in the audience said …

Bruh! The guitar tonal range during Manic Depression just blew the top of my head off. You guys sounded phenomenal, thanks for sharing this with us. 🙏

he did a solo acoustic house party in Seattle a few years ago and I was lucky enough to get invited. I was gobsmacked at how great he is. And a nice guy too.

I think Eric is a fellow Bay Area resident where I've seen him perform a few times in noir revue settings. It blows me away to hear about his first exposure to flamenco at the feet of instructor John Truitt. As local Albuquerqueians know, John is a local treasure. I studied alto sax with Truitt for a couple of years, and he played solo guitar and with his jazz band Alma at my New Mexico wedding. That was a long time ago, in 1982. Hail Albuquerque! Hail John Truitt! And hail Eric McFadden!

Eric’s unique vibrato gives it a very sitar-like sound. I gotta learn that!

Thank you Tim! You are so generous with your giving back to all of us who yearn to have chops like you and Eric have mastered. Crazy cool with the nod to Jimi, channeling the Reckless Abandon!

I used to bump into Eric in San Francisco constantly just walking around my neighborhood or at the many live shows I used to attend. Last time was in a Kinkos where he and Eric Burdon were trying to print flyers for a European tour they were leaving for in the morning. Being an IT guy at the time, I was happy to help them ;)

Wow, thats cool. I saw Eric years ago in a tiny club in southern spain (El Palmar near Tarifa). He played with a little band. A female bass player was in his band too.. It was awesome. Like him. Greetz

Ahhhh, Reckless Abandon indeed. Like, you know what you know, no matter what 'level' you're at with the instrument...you got all your 'chops'...now...forget 'em, and just PLAY!! That's the most Hendrixian way !

Wow Eric McFadden tremendous musician !! , definitely not Flamenco , but it does have an undeniable flavor of Spanish Rumba when he picks up the nylon string guitar.

Eric came over to my beach bungalow in OB San Diego. I think that was before he played w George Clinton. I went to Albuquerque, NM and hung out with his old friends and his brother Ivan.

Eric's stratty guitar sounds great; and similar to Jimi's sound on the original recording. Sort of dirty in a clean way. I often think people have forgotten how relatively clean Jimi's sound could be compared with modern high gain metal type sounds.
