I’ve had the privilege of seeing and meeting Josh a number of times in different settings and his reputation is absolutely accurate. Not only is he an absolute burner….he’s also a genuinely kind dude. 🤘🏻
I'm new to Josh Smith, and beside being a phenomenal player, he seems like a cool down-to-earth guy. new fan right here! Tim, you're awesome as usual. :)
I met Josh in Dallas when he was doing a clinic early this year. Amazing player and a down to earth nice guy!! He's become one of my guitar favorites... and you too Tim! I haven't met you yet but I really appreciate your playing and your hard work... you make look so easy... both you guys! Thanks, jp
This was so much fun to watch! The energy and excitement was great! It took me back decades when I was an active guitarist and engineer. It was great to see that old analog tape gear again! Thank you both, Tim and Josh!
Josh definitely takes modern blues to a whole other level with his tone and technique! Really a premiere guitarist in the modern era I'd say! Great interview with him!
In jazz I think they call it exposition, development and recapitulation. Josh is one of my all time favorites...His phrasing is out of this world and he's got the elusive Albert Collins burn and tone taken to the next level. Just an amazing player. Tim is a monster too, he's so good it makes me smile.
This is such an awesome lesson. When I was spending time writing more Melodie’s, I always adhered to “anything worth saying once is worth saying twice” and often played my guitar solos that way. Those solos were the ones everyone talked about.
This is the most important lesson every guitarist should try to understand. This is where the less is more saying came from. I really think thats what the guitarist are trying to say but josh dissects it and makes it digestible. Great video , you guys are awesome.
I was blown away by the approach of blues phrasing and soloing. When Josh mentioned D'Angelo's Brown Sugar was recorded on that Studer, my jaw dropped. That is an epic album!!
JOSH is also amazing... and "alive." He's just making sure the message continues to be heard and gets passed down to all that can benefit. I absolutely love and respect Josh Smith. He, too, is obviously a brilliant musician, but the passion he displays for everything his craft entails is nearly unsurpassed in my book (well, along with Tim Pierce, as well). Check out ANYTHING from him. He's all heart, and he can barely keep his Enormous talent and passion contained, or that huge, talented Heart of his will explode. We are so lucky to have him in our life's timeline.
You don't have to prove anything to anyone. You have the feel, so just have fun with it. Play what makes you happy and feel good. That's all that matters my friend 😉👍.
I also love how professional Tim (and/or his crew?) is doing the entire videoproduction. Very impressive to deliver so much content, of such amazing quality MANY times a week. Love it!
Josh Smith is killing that guitar solo WOW! He is a master guitarist and musician! Thanks Tim for this video! It's eye opening, inspiring and all around perfect.
I very much like Tim's "the view from here" approach to everything. Being humble is great lubricant for self improvement. I loved the quote from his sample video: "I'm smart enough to know that I'm too dumb to play over those changes..." stellar. love.
You're basically describing the way Jerry Garcia played guitar, the other day I watched one of your videos and you suggested that we play like our life depends on it. This is another Jerry Garcia philosophy. I heard a story once where he did a little too much acid any thoughts of mobsters were going to kill him as soon as he got off stage. So just play like you got a gun pointed at your head and you will kill it every time! Mucho gracias! You and Beto... are the Jedi Masters. May the tone be with you!
Tim, your channel is amazing and a real gift to guitarists and musicians in general. I've been a fan of yours for a very long time and also a fan of Josh Smith too. Recently, you turned me on to Tom Bukovac. What an amazingly skilled, knowledgeable and creative player he is. He is also a hoot! He's got a great sense of humor and humorous mannerisms to go with it. Tim, your skill and love of sharing wonderful, creative ideas is really special! Thanks so much for dedication and all you offer the musical community!!!
Awesome stuff Tim! I love Josh's playing and attitude. Had the joy of seeing him in a small venue in Budapest twice now... what a fantastic musician! He's definitely not just a good guitar player, the guy really plays for the song. Thanks for the mini tour of the studio too!
I worked at Schnee Studio in 1989 - 91 - such an amazing time seeing Jellyfish, Dr. John, Mark Knopfler, Jackson Browne, Toto, etc. etc. making amazing music - it is very cool that Josh has some of the wall tiles & patch bays in his room now. Serious mojo!
It's amazing how excited these cats are to just give away so many trade secrets. THANKS GUYS! Also, it speaks of how infinite the whole guitar/music thing actually is. At the end of the day I'm just so grateful for EXPANDED MUSICAL HORIZONS and for the education in musicology that I've had and given myself over the decades...
This whole concept reminds me of the John Mayer video where he goes to Berkely College Of Music and jams with Tomo Fujita and explains this exact idea. And when Tomo plays the entire audience goes nuts when he plays just a simple phrase but plays it with finesse and John says "now you have the entire neck left to go wherever you want".
It's so great to see that such masters of the guitar as you still do their best to keep growing and keep investing in themselves. You're a great inspiration to musicians all around the world. Much respect from Latvia!
Larry Carlton also suggests that simplification is the key to a memorable solo especially in blues when you have 5 recurring notes to emphasize. Tim's lick is melodic and rockin' at the same time and can be repeated at different positions on the neck to add variety. Very valuable lesson there.
TIM...💥! This was the best...most helpful...and inspiring video I’ve ever seen about the business of the guitar, and the business in general! 👏🏻 I’ve always loved your no nonsense way...and style...you and Josh are both just monsters ! The segment about composing short ..repetitive, memorable riffs...then morphing slightly...before you burn rubber...then return to these themes...is something I’ve been pounding into my students for 30 years 🎸😆 ...some get it, some don’t...but it’s the best advice EVER ! Thanks for the great video ☝️👏🏻 Steve in North Dakota ❄️🌬
Many thanks for this, Tim. Loved Josh's playing and your playing, and this is a really good tip. "Play for the song" is my approach to playing, too. Josh also seems like a really nice, articulate and personable guy, so he is very easy to watch and listen to when he is talking about how he approaches guitar playing.
Brilliant Analog Studio. That art will always be needed. Jimmy Church pointed out a few weeks ago: a cymbal on digital - tssss a cymbal on analog - tsssssssssssssssss And it's true. I needed this video so bad; I am in the middle of recording a new song, and I wanted to learn some things before I finished it. I learned from this today, like providence.
Tim,really liked your guitar solo, no boring stuff. Liked the way you switched from the hemiola part,to the double stop fifths. You are the first guy in years ,I have heard do that, that's traditional RnB.I have been playing guitar for fifty five years, and worked with a lot of Blues Artists Taj ,Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter,John Mayall to name a few. But,thanks to guys like you,I can keep learning .Konoronk:wa (Love and Care)
I learned this as kid. I picked up bass to get in a band with my friends, playing tone support was boring me. Our drummer taught me the "Bootsy Collins" jive... Always come back to "1". Coming back on the count of 1 playing the same lick, then go walking around the rest of the counts. The 1 will hook your ear. I picked up the same style in my soloing, timing my solo off the drummer and hitting that sweet lick every time the drummer gives me a sweet spot or if he's repeating a fill I can hook up with.
Thank you for sharing this! It’s exceptionally helpful for those of us who play in cover bands who take the framework of someone’s well loved riff and somehow try to hang our own music on it!!!
This has hands down been one of the most helpful guitar related videos I have seen on here in years. At the moment I do feel like i'm running out of things to say so it's time to keep the phrases shorter and stick to a few notes and really dig in to them! Amazing video, keep it up! 😎👍
Tim. You have become one of the most influential and important guitarists in my 35 years of playing guitar. Your style is so laser beam pointed and aggressive while your lessons are always calming and informative on so many levels. Thank you for your channel and for sharing your wealth of information in such a candid and kind manner. You're a down to earth guy who makes watching so easy and your teaching manner is spot on easy to assimilate and digest. I just bought the Josh Smith TrueFire Blue Highways course and already see it building my playing immensely in so many ways. You have a loyal fan and student here. Thank You for everything.
I really dug this video. It took me back in time in a gloriously good way. I'm so impressed that old school recording is being appreciated for it's magic sonic qualities. The massive reverb plate behind the day bed was killer!

Love all of your videos Tim... they are informative they are fun to watch their funny they're amazing bus is also refreshing to see an amazing guitar player such as yourself buying other guitar players videos to learn stuff that's amazing
Love that tone on his Tele style guitar. Interesting player. But I'm here to see Tim Pierce anytime he plays, or talks about playing guitar. Whadda legend😎👍
I love these vidoes Tim, it's like we're there, in this special world of music and tricks. Need them longer, want them longer, wish them...(you get the drift) :) way way longer. When ever they stop it's like "nooo more please!" :)
Great video Tim, love what you and Josh played. Had the headphones on jamming. Yes I am a drummer learning as much as possible about music theory and guitars. That is why I am here. Josh is right us drummers who play with and for the music are the real work horses in our markets. 👍🎼🥁🤟

Josh smith is really good! Cant believe he's not yet a house hold name like bonamassa? Hes just as good. Your super good too Tim i've always liked your style and the way you break things down. You have helped soo many people and you have helped my guitar playing alot! You two should record something together if you haven't already? I also totally agree with what he said about how far some younger guitarists have come these days "So technical" but sometimes the forget the simple things that make good blues and rock stand out "The hooks"! Awesome!! Never forget where you come from no matter how good you get! Tell a great story or conversation with your guitar playing i say! Repetition i guess is what learns it, playing for years and even just finding our own voice/style of playing! This stuff just gets me pumped to grab my geetar! Rock on!
Tim Pierce have you seen the old instructions video with Scott Henderson? Where he goes over this process so beautifully and it's funny too. He was so right back in the day, kinda cool to see you guys still talk about his ideas of "great blues", and building a phrase and about the audience and such, Keep Rockin'
Man I alsolutly love Josh's tele playing it's how blues should be played (ala Albert King). Blues is motif playing taken anywhere you want. TP is one of the smoothest players you will ever hear, thanks guys!
Love the TA.. I just stumbled on an Icon at a local shop. Whichbwad the 1st TA I ever played. Bought it on the spot.. Amazing gtrs.. Speaking of amazing, I wish I was on that cruise..

Josh And Tim together = oh man!!! Too good.
And to top it off, Mateus giving it a compliment. GOLD!
Vai Palmeiras!!!!
Not to mention Jack Mason commenting on Mateus comment!! Don't get better than that!!
GUITAR GODS IN THE COMMENTS!!
Mateus, you three are UNBELIEVABLE AMAZING.
It really is a a great time to be alive when I can just click and be educated by someone with such a wealth of experience for free
That’s what she said 😉
I’ve had the privilege of seeing and meeting Josh a number of times in different settings and his reputation is absolutely accurate. Not only is he an absolute burner….he’s also a genuinely kind dude. 🤘🏻
Tim, you are humble enough to still be a student. You have all my respect and admiration.
I find Josh Smith one of the most inspring guitar player these days - just love the sound and the variety in the playing - thank you !
I'm new to Josh Smith, and beside being a phenomenal player, he seems like a cool down-to-earth guy. new fan right here!

I love that you and josh both not only play amazing solos but you play interesting rhythm guitar as well..,.which seems to be falling out of fashion.
Recently discovered Josh Smith. Not only does he have some great chops, he also seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Josh definitely takes modern blues to a whole other level with his tone and technique! Really a premiere guitarist in the modern era I'd say! Great interview with him!
Thanks! I feel the same way
@@timpierceguitar You are welcome my man! Glad to see him on the show indeed!
Dude, why am I seeing you everywhere? Cheers!
@@christoph.schneider ahh that's what happens when I have to time to do so haha! Cheers to you my man!
Not many blues guys made such good use of a Tele bridge pickup either. Other than Albert Collins and Rory's slide work of course.
I love these two; Josh is a blues master! Tim can play ANYTHING! I'd love to hang out with these guys on the weekend.
I am semi-obsessed for the past couple of weeks with Josh’s incredible guitar skills. Very cool behind-the-scenes type video.
In jazz I think they call it exposition, development and recapitulation. Josh is one of my all time favorites...His phrasing is out of this world and he's got the elusive Albert Collins burn and tone taken to the next level. Just an amazing player. Called the same in classical music!
This is such an awesome lesson. When I was spending time writing more Melodie’s, I always adhered to “anything worth saying once is worth saying twice” and often played my guitar solos that way. Those solos were the ones everyone talked about.
Two baaaaad dudes! (in the best possible way)
Just saw your comment thanks so much man !!
if you get a chance send me an email at admin@timpierceguitar.com I’ll hit you back
Theme and melody. Bravo! That is what grabs listeners and sells records, not all the techno-shred around the edges.
This is the most important lesson every guitarist should try to understand. This is where the less is more saying came from. I really think thats what the guitarist are trying to say but josh dissects it and makes it digestible. Great video , you guys are awesome.

a few years back I got into Lovepedals and found Josh Smith there.. what a player! the look on Joe's face while Josh threw down? priceless!

I'm just starting to learn to play (at 66) and this was WAY over my head, but I was still smiling like a schoolboy in a brothel. SWEET!
You don't have to prove anything to anyone. You have the feel, so just have fun with it. Play what makes you happy and feel good. That's all that matters my friend 😉👍.
School boy in a brothel??!! Hahaha. Love it

WOW, what a fantastic player, fantastic approach, excellent lesson for us all, less can actually be more, much more. Thanks Tim and Josh. Fantastic
Tim , you always have the best content. Interesting, informative , and learnable! Thanks
Two bad ass guitar slinging masters riffing off one another's passion! WOW!!!

That run at about 9:45 was incredible! I backed up and watched that over and over again. Going to learn that one.
Great video! I love Josh's generosity and enthusiasm. Thanks Tim!
Awesome - nice to see Tim Pierce as a beast in his own right.
Josh Smith is on fire he is one of best that i have seen and i like the fact that he shares his licks with every one thanks for the music Josh.
Just had musical brought a tear to my eye moment with a Josh solo in this vid! Wow
Thank you for putting into words what I always knew down in my soul was the right way to express yourself on guitar! Awesome!

Wow! SUCH WISDOM in this!
IT is really fun to see you guys sharing the passion for the guitar. The ultimate instrument. And thank you guys for tips and hints. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I really dug this video. It took me back in time in a gloriously good way. I'm so impressed that old school recording is being appreciated for it's magic sonic qualities. The massive reverb plate behind the day bed was killer!
You are just the greatest Tim, Insperation to all of us !! Music or other wise !
Any guitarist would be humbled by Josh's playing. Even the great ones.
With all the information available to us now, a whole new generation of badass guitar player is coming.
Yea baby.

you can hear billions of hours played in Josh playing, love it !!!!
This technique hits the nail right on the head. I also take this approach and it just works.

Thank you-that was deep diving! Keep it simple and free to go wild. 😇
Hey, Tim, love your stuff! Keep it up, and thank you!
Cool vid! Thanks! Singing along with your solo helps keep it simple and melodic too. Three notes and the truth! :)
Great video Tim, love what you and Josh played. Had the headphones on jamming. Yes I am a drummer learning as much as possible about music theory and guitars. That is why I am here. Josh is right us drummers who play with and for the music are the real work horses in our markets. 👍🎼🥁🤟
Super excellent! Crazy good player. Thanks for the fantastic video.
I was just looking at that this morning on True Fire. You both have a great way of sharing your musical knowledge that gets right to the point...no fluff. Thank you so much!
That's a real tasty nugget of blues education! Also very inspirational and motivational. Thanks!!
So cool to see inside Josh's home studio setup. Thanks. Very nice setup.
Tim is so cool the way the respects others.
its been a while since I have heard someone with that kind of fire for the blues in there fingertips and there were parts in the opening performance were his intensity reminded me of SRV, just hitting my soul and soaring, thanks for introducing me to this guy Tim, the interview was also a nice insight into what a down to earth dude he is as well, absolutely love it !

What a refreshing take on the blues.
Great advice from Josh on playing in one small space on the fretboard and pulling as much as you can out of it!!
josh Smith Always Play And Say the right Thing
Josh has a room full of guitars, Tim has a room full of gear. A match made in heaven.
yet they're in the same room
Awesome vid, thanks Tim!! Love the practical stuff y'all talked about...

I LOVE THIS. That he has all his super cool musical stuff and a day bed for guests in the same room!
Wow Josh that opening solo was soooo good that’s exceptional playing dude 👍
Call and response always appeals to my ear. This is great video. Love how Josh has those ('Abbey Road') style old Studer tape machines. Nice studio
