The Workboy retrospective and recovery was such a fascinating story. I almost can't believe you managed to not only acquire but activate an unreleased 30 year old one-of-a-kind prototype that was near guaranteed to never function again. It was a lucky break thanks to the Gigaleak but you yourself never gave up on the conviction to run the add-on and I greatly respect your tenacity. Amazing video.

I think the Workboy video is my favorite DYKG video. It was cool to see something that only lived for a brief moment as a dream that was almost accomplished. Seeing the software suddenly start working as intended with both the cartridge and the keyboard gave me nostalgia about something I never held in my own hands.

So workboy question: curious as to what countries it has in the world map with the 1992/93 release planned. Does it still have a yugoslavia, or had they already updated it? How about the rest of the former soviet satellites that were still finalizing themselves around that era? I find all the tech from that era a fantastic time capsule of how rapidly the world changed - like how two versions of the same shareware Risk clone had two different sets of countries, or things like the Workboy that are forever trapped in a world that doesn't exist anymore.

  • @rabidguineapig

okay, so when I was very little I remember seeing and ultimately owning a cartridge for some sort of organizer software for the game boy, it had a calculator, word processor, date organizer, etc... I remember my mom and dad explicitly protesting "that's not a game, you wouldn't like it" but I wasn't interested in it being a "game" I was interested in something new for me, a piece of software...
I owned something like that, I swear! I cartridge for my game boy, particularly a game boy pocket, that was sort of like a home computer, it didn't have any kind of keyboard add-on but I could still do all of the things the beginning of this video says. It was some sort of "home computer on the go" type of thing.
does anyone here know what I'm talking about? I just want to find the rom so that I can confirm that I'm not crazy! it was just some random cartridge I found at target probably....

the applications of the Work Boy probably seem laughable to someone today who has a smartphone but in 1992, before the internet was a household thing, before computers were even portable, this seems like a cool gadget to a traveling businessman. I'm actually amazed.

Even today, there’s always room for
low end, low cost computers. Comparing a Gameboy paired with Workboy to the more expensive portable PCs of the time, i think the feature and hardware differences (screen resolution, processing power, memory and storage) are similar to say, a chromebook and a mid to high-range Windows laptop. Maybe a Gameboy can play better games than a Chromebook though!

Even if the market eventually became more of a grey spot after PCs got more mainstream, or it QUICKENED PCs becoming mainstream, the WorkBoy still would have gotten a lot out of parents that wanted their kids to get into all its uses and applications, just as I used to in our old Windows 98 pc haha. Its GBC repercuted sequel really actually captured a market that could have been held, It's almost as a wireless phone medium as was achieved later but for gaming and would have never been seen as "fighting with THAT industry" if it came out. Kinda ironic as that same bubbled social media for THEIR users and interactivity with games was later tried heavily with Miiverse, but this time they weren't the first.

Am glad the workboy wasn’t released because it made the gameboy hardly portible and since the screen was also not backlighted and not sharp,it would,ve be very impractical to use it for serious work, yes it did had forward features for it’s time in 1990 but that’s it.
