I hope Nintendo keeps being weaker than the competition though. Easy to emulate instead of paying $60 for old games. Gamepass is doing great things for consumers
actually its the hardware limitations that force you think outside of the box and this results in classic games being born... modern gaming lacks this the game designers have been spoiled with good hardware...
Link's Awakening was so colorful and care-free that one developer also included a fishing mini game just for fun; also it was partly inspired by the surreal Twin Peaks... the duality of man
In the original version you can use the screen skip trick to warp the fisherman into the tree to the south of him and then "go fishing" it will take you to broken glitch world with invisible broken pathways to any place in the game as well as inaccessible areas. However if you didnt leave this "glitch world" in specific way you would be stuck there wandering in broken pixels and horrid glitch amalgam enemies and solid floor tiles that you can swim through or fall through.
The fact that Gold and Silver had a very obscure anti-cheat, means that Nintendo was well aware of people who exploit the trading features of the mainline games as well as the glitches found in the first generation of games, so Clair is effectively self aware of the glitchy reality she resides in. When triggering this anti-cheat, the game effectively has banned you from finishing the game.
That's not the only one. If you use a GameShark code to get all the badges before you actually beat the gyms, there's a guy in Mahogany Town who sells RageCandyBar who blocks the east exit to Route 44 and normally leaves once you got the seventh badge (Pryce's Glacier Badge)...yeah, you hack the badges in, HE WILL NOT LEAVE. EVER. You're screwed and have to basically start the entire game over. Unlike Clair, this guy won't call you out for cheating...he just keeps doing his normal thing of pestering you to buy the candy and won't leave even after beating Pryce. Same for Crystal, too. So Nintendo was probably also aware of the fact that people were using cheat devices, which they were adamantly against to the bitter end.
Here lately I have been too busy to actually really get into any gaming but getting deep dives into games that I grew up with definitely scratches that itch, thanks for the videos!
The original Link's Awakening and a gameboy pocket were my first gaming experience. I was so young that I hadn't learned to read yet, so I had to have my parents read the text to me. Some of the best music in videogames
Oh man. I got me a Gameboy pocket one year for Christmas and I've loved playing videogames (preferably portable games I can take anywhere) it's great. I think I'll play some right now!!
The gameboy was a huge portion of my childhood. We didn’t have a lot of money so the gameboy was my main video game console, also living in a rural area I had a lot of commuting I did with my family to go anywhere so the gameboy was everything to me.
Damn, I didn't know that the Pokemon Trading Card Game for gameboy had a sequel. I actually really liked that game, so a sequel would have been right up my alley.
Makes me happy hearing how Link's Awakening influenced Ocarina of Time, such a good game and it being on the GameBoy makes it easy to think that it wasn't all that pivotal or important to the franchise.
I welcome the switch to more longform and indepth videos. I think preserving videogame history and talking to devs while it's still relatively easy is super important. Even more so as games with mandatory online components become the norm. One fascinating video I recently watched was about restoring the online hub in MHTri after Nintendo shutdown the servers. Things like these are at risk of being lost to time.
I never had a OG game boy but I had a game boy advance sp and I miss that thing like crazy. Probably some of the most fun I’ve had gaming was on long road trips on that thing playing Shrek 2, Donkey Kong, and Pokémon.
The Game Boy has such an amazing line up of games that people barely bring up, and that's a shame. I really hope whenever we get GB games on NSO more people will be able to discover the gems on this console.
19:26 Can you imagine the people who actually had Mission Impossible *and* Robopon? Robopon had a sensor that could receive remote control signals to unlock chests and to power up Robopon. And Mission Impossible could send remote control signals. There's probably a handful of people in the world who actually used those two functions together.
I feel like yelling that narartor, for building up the drama for the guy sleeping in his bunk. It felt lke when michael scott hit meredith and said "Meredith was hit by a car. It happened this morning in the parking lot. I took her to the hospital and the doctors tried to save her life. They did the best that they could" and oscaar says "What is wrong with you? Why did you have to phrase it like that?"
I did not know that David Lynch was an indirect influence on Link’s Awakening. That explains a lot. I wrote a small book for an art class at age 12 mostly inspired by Link’s Awakening and later I was getting into the surrealism of Lynch, like Lost Highways and the music in that.
Huh.... The part around the 51-minute mark where Jimmy talks about video games being able to suppress traumatic memories has me wondering if that's what got me through my mother's passing in 1992 when I was 7. 🤔
Hahahah I live 10 minutes away from Irvine... I love that the college was subtitled as University of California, Irvina. Love your guys' content. Thanks for the videos!!
8:12 also bonus fun fact...that I learned from DYKG, the ability to make your own dungeons was something planned for the original Zelda on Nes, (I think you might also mention it in the mario maker video?) anyway... it's cool to see they finally added that feature... albiet 20 or so years late
Dude...told to get on a train, travel across this beautiful country of ours, and while I'm at it try to complete Links Awakening on my own GB ? Sign me up!
39:45 Yes and no. "Gerbera" is more likely a reference to the _GP04G Gerbera_ in keeping with the theme of the four RX-78 GP series Gundam units, though you're still _technically correct_ because Anaheim never completed Unit 04 as a Gundam, instead refitting it as the _AGX-04 Gerbera Tetra_ and giving it to the Zeon remnants of Cima Garahau's fleet where it became her personal mobile suit. *[Adjusts glasses]*
8:25. "We'll keep that in mind going forward." That's such a powerful courtesy and the Zelda franchise has continued to shine. Not perfect, but certainly coming into it's prime. That's the difference between Zelda games and the contemporary Pokemon main series experiences. When fans make an uproar about something, they listen, and if nothing else, they take it seriously for future game developments. I want great pokemon games back with all the love, sweat, and tears they used to bring with them. If they just had more of that kind of attitude we'd have better games too.
In anticipation for Metroid Dread, I played through every Metroid game (excluding pinball). I was quite shocked by how much Metroid 2 (GB) improved on the first Metroid (NES). The Game Boy was quite the little beast.
Do you have any plans to do a video about the second Japan-only Pokedex Book that was made for Gold & Silver, similar to how you did for the first? Anyway, excited to watch this great analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
I was genuinely surprised at how few RPGs were on the Gameboy. I would've thought that they would probably have some of the most titles of the entire library, but I've only been able to find 2-3 good titles. Maybe I'm just underappreciative.
"If people like this idea of arranging dungeons, we'll keep it in mind." Aww, crud! LAS's dungeon maker was garbage though. I really hope they make a full game of it someday anyway. 🙏
21:47 I would expect DYKG of all channels to know that that's not just any knockoff Lego, but Nintendo's own N&B blocks from 1968 when they were a toy manufacturer. I suppose though that they aren't quite as well known as something like the Ultra Hand or the original projector version of Duck Hunt though.
I believe it is possible to transfer between the first GameBoy and a newer GameBoy idk which one I think it's the adcanced one now through a mod a UA-camr made recently
It's funny that Universal went from suing Nintendo for thinking they infringed their rights over King Kong to making a Donkey Kong land in their amusement parks.
one hour of Zelda facts is the perfect background video to trying to sleep to insomnia, although maybe the fact that I'm posting this at 02:48 am might be a contradiction lol
Man i enjoy the handheld games a lot thanks to their portable of it heck every game generation didnt matter which system I got i always have a Nintendo handheld with me
20:15 Correction. The game you are showing and describing is Final Fantasy Adventure, *not* Final Fantasy Legend. There were four games on the Game Boy that were localized with the Final Fantasy name. Final Fantasy Adventure, The Final Fantasy Legend, Final Fantasy Legend II, and Final Fantasy Legend III. The Legend series is also known as Saga. Fun fact: the actual files on the American cartridges for the Final Fantasy Legend games are "SAGA," "SAGA2," and "SAGA3"
I have to agree, but honestly the music always left me a bit disappointed, except a few tracks. Like the theme while in Wario's Castle? Perfection. Just, the whole, *mostly silence, add some squeaks* songs I really didn't enjoy.
Ya know, I love emulation, flash carts, etc. Essentially, any way that lets me play roms. For multiple reasons of course. I love the ease and convenience of having all of my games in a big list that I can just pick and play. I can also play games that I missed out on. AND, the biggest reason, being able to play games from other regions. For example, Pokemon Trading Card Game 2. There's a whole english translation you can find online. I can play that english translation on my actual Game Boy Color or even GBA (or any number emulation devices). I played the hell out of the original Pokemon TCG on GBC, and being able to play the Japan-exclusive sequel is amazing. And over the years, I've managed to play so many non-english games, in english, that I'd otherwise never get to play. Even more recently, playing Monster Hunter 2 on PS2. The Game Boy line of consoles are probably my favorite games to play, ever. Through emulation or real consoles, I can play pretty much anything from old MS Dos and Atari 2600, up to Xbox Series S/X games. I have flash carts to play on a real handheld, I have a handheld emulation console, and I have emulators on my Xbox. I play Game Boy more than I play my actual modern Xbox games.
GameBoy proved that weak hardware doesn't stop you from making great games.
That's true but with more capable hardware you can even make better games.
I hope Nintendo keeps being weaker than the competition though. Easy to emulate instead of paying $60 for old games. Gamepass is doing great things for consumers
It's so cool how working with limitations makes people think outside the box.
Do you guys know about other games like Links awakening who's origins begun as fun sideproject that weren't intended as actual games?
actually its the hardware limitations that force you think outside of the box and this results in classic games being born...
modern gaming lacks this the game designers have been spoiled with good hardware...
Link's Awakening was so colorful and care-free that one developer also included a fishing mini game just for fun; also it was partly inspired by the surreal Twin Peaks... the duality of man

That story about the guy locked in the sleeping compartment is so freaking ominous.
yeah at first I was like, oh, wait, he was just sleeping? Then it was, wait he slept through a SLEDGEHAMMER THROUGH THE DOOR?!
It ended very differently than I expected!
I've slept through thunderstorms.
I thought it would end with them saying they found his dead body or something 😬
Really been enjoying these long-form videos. They're nice to put on in the background while I work or do chores.
I wish I had a job

I remember seeing DYKG YEARS ago but never really watched their videos until recently, now I have a backlog of content to watch. Very nice
Relaxing narration on top of classic game tracks is why DYKG videos are top tier. It's video game ASMR and I love it.
I just love How links awakening was just a simply class like project and when done it literally was beloved by all
Oh man. I got me a Gameboy pocket one year for Christmas and I've loved playing videogames (preferably portable games I can take anywhere) it's great. I think I'll play some right now!!
Link's awakening was my first game ever. Sweet nostalgia.
I still got my Gameboy Color and Link's Awakening DX. That game holds up so well, I still play it whenever the nostalgia kicks in

Out of this entire hour of video, the most memorable moment was the narrator mispronouncing 2002 as “Two thousand thoo”. 44:00
Damn, I didn't know that the Pokemon Trading Card Game for gameboy had a sequel. I actually really liked that game, so a sequel would have been right up my alley.

Thanks for these long play facts. It's so fun to listen to at work!
Thanks DYKG. I love falling asleep to these.
Going into my driving playlist right away! Love the compilations!
Link's Awakening is still my favorite Zelda game of all time. Such a good original story
Can’t believe they missed the chance to call the Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls into “For Whom the Bell Toads”
If only you knew about the translation of Link's Awakening for the German release. Boy, they were special in some parts.

The gameboy color was my first ever console (N64 came maybe a month after) and it will forever be nostalgic for me lol. Love these vids
The games pictured in the thumbnail are literally my 3 favorite Gameboy games of all time, well done.
One of the first few GB games that I've played was Bomber King. I didn't know back then that it was part of the Bomberman series.
This video came first for 3 nights in a row after picking shuffle on the dykg 1 hour playlist. Neat.
