  • NES - Nintendo Entertainment System - Chronicles of Gaming
Exploring the history of the NES, or Nintendo Entertainment System. It's time for an in depth look at the foundation of Nintendo, the birth of the Famicom, and what would be known as the NES to the rest of the world. The NES was a pillar in the world of video games, and absolutely deserving of as much attention as I'm giving it.

Finally someone mentioned the fact that the NES was succesful in France and Scandinavia. So many other UA-camrs ignore that fact and say NES totally failed in Europe. As someone who grew up during that time in Sweden, it's a bit frustrating how people seem to forget other countries exist in Europe. Here, SEGA did alright with Master System, although far from a massive hit, while NES on the other hand was pretty huge over here!

British UA-camrs mostly. One of the things Brits share in common with with us Americans is a tendency to think we're the center of the world.

I lived in Britain in the late 80s as kid and remember the NES being big. Yes the master system was big too but the NES only free and grew in popularity. By 1991 the NES was pretty big. When Super Mario Bros 3 came out it was the must have game. It was the very first game I bought with my own money.

Video game history is something that's sorely lacking on the internet. This comprehensive history is amazing in its completeness. Your ability to reference specific legal battles and company policies speaks to how much research you do did. Thank you sir, for this look into 80's game development and the glimpse into 80's game development culture.

It's actually something I've been wanting to do for a long time. (Way before I even started my channel) - but just didn't really have the tools to do so. It's been nice being able to release this series, even if it's not super frequent.

Recently I have begun loving Nintendo more and more to the point I never want to go back to Microsoft and Sony ever again. I have owned N64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy Advanced and now 3ds but I have never really paid any attention to Nintendo even though I have owned so many of their products.
I have had so much fun with their games, with and without friends but now that I'm finally paying attention to Nintendo I can see how amazing they are. They are doing exactly what I want and what the gaming industry desperately needs right now.
I know so little about Nintendo and their history and because I have become such a big Nintendo fan at this point this video is so fascinating. Thank you Dave. I'm very excited for Nintendo Switch and all their quality games.

When I think about Nintendo, I always have this international company in mind, that operates from Japan, but is in actuality very cosmopolitan. Now that I know what the name actually means, that they were in the oicho kabu business, and intersected with the yakuza, I think: "Wow, you can't be more culutrally Japanese. Holy shit!"

Reading up on it, and the effects of WW2 on the company and family was really interesting, just because it's not something you normally think of - especially with Nintendo.
(Not that there was too much with WW2 outside of them trying to keep Hiroshi Yamauchi out of the war, as he was around the right age - and his parents did everything they could to make sure he wasn't on the front lines).

You never cease to impress! Every time I watch one of your videos I learn something new. It was interesting to see the design for a DS used on an older handheld. I had never seen that system before. (Can't wait for that Banjo Tooie Super Show that you hinted at)

And I wanted to suggest that you purchase Darkest Dungeon. It is a turn based strategy similar to a Final Fantasy. There is a twist though- imagine all four positions in the column moved behind one row. The abilities are specific to the positions too. On top of that, you have to manage a character's stress levels to make sure they don't get too unhealthy. BUT the most debilitating aspect of the game is when a character's hit points reach 0, they have a chance to die permanently.
Sorry for the rant, but after following your channel for so long I know you would enjoy it.

    • @DaveControlLive
      @DaveControlLive  7 років тому +1

I've actually been wanting to get Darkest Dungeon for a long time. I think it fell of my radar because it sorta fell off everyone's radar, haha. But, I'll definitely pick it up!
I also find it pretty incredible that the DS is essentially a repurposed Game & Watch with a touch screen. I had no idea until recently.

1989 was a very big year for Nintendo. The Wizard premiered in theaters, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Captain N made it to TV, Game Boy made its debut in stores. Movies like Ghostbusters II and Back to the Future Part II made references to Nintendo. This shouldn't be too surprising considering that 1989 was also Nintendo's centennial year.

The release of the NES is the reason why gaming still exists today imo. Without this, the gaming market would've either died completely or became a very niche form of entertainment that hardly anyone used. It's not an overstatement to say the NES saved gaming.

Well, don't worry, man. All of your videos, no matter how long they take have huuuge effort put in them. Not to mention the production value. You're a top notch content creator, friend. You see the trending tab in youtube? Pranks. Not people like you. So take comfort knowing that even if you don't get enough views, your content is right up there with JonTron and Every Frame a Painting. :)
