This is great info Allan. I needed to hear this topic since I got a little lost lately in trying to figure out how to transition from my current career.
I've been in the industry for about 20 yrs now. I'm self taught and did not goto school for VFX. I find that in life it's all about who you know and not what you know. Anyone can be trained to do VFX, just like anything else. If you really want to get into the industry all you need to do Is move to Canada and get your foot in any VFX company , your chances will be better up there. Check out a few UA-cam videos, learn the lingo and have confidence in yourself. You'll be a VFX sup sooner then you know. Good luck!
Two questions. 1. Is it okay to learn one type specialization to get a job or does one need to know the basics of everything and kind of master one thing. 2. What material do you suggest i study / learn if I want to learn VFX for fantasy landscapes / nature etc. Is this area called something special? Is it recommended to delve into this as a beginner. Thanks

Hi Allan! This was the nice fresh breeze I needed. I was feeling stuck just before I started but this defo made me raise my head and look forward! I'm giving my first steps into Compositing,... trying to learn a little bit of roto, matte painting, camera projection... When you talk about our "Sunday goal", is it a good way to try and replicate a scene? For example, I love that Stranger Things season 3 part where Will comes out of the Arcade Games bar and the Shadow monster appears very far away, with all those clouds and red scenery. Should I put all my efforts in trying to recreate that? Thanks in advance!!

Awesome Allan great video! How important would a skill like polygon modeling be for a technical director? I would love if you could elaborate on what kind of core skills should a technical director have. Seeing as now that a vast majority of modeling is done through sculpting software. Thanks again, you are a great inspiration! Love from Mexico!
Great talk as usual Allan! Thank you! Can you please make video or share tips how to work as vfx freelancer from home? I worked as nuke compositor at mpc, mill, unit etc. but I would like to start work from home. What do you think about upwork, fiverr and other freelance sites? Thank you and keep up the great work!
Hi Pavel, definitely! I plan to cover working from home extensively. As a majority of my work I do is always remote (mostly so I can work on multiple projects at once). In the meantime check out www.allanmckay.com/1/ there's also a few other podcast episodes focused around remote work I made
Allan, you need to create a video on that light you have on your desk. I am confused as to if that's even a real light or a CG render. With my background in photography, I would like to know how your camera is exposed so that the light isn't blown out... Create a video on your lighting setup. :D
Thanks buddy I'm terrible at lighting haha - the bulb is very low light and the light behind me I think is 1000w. If there's any indication of how under exposed the shot is. I assume I had a lot of night lights on me off camera
Hey Allan! Love your content. I am starting a film business at the moment. In therms of visual effects I started learning Blender a while ago (back then just for fun and because I was curious) and became somewhat familiar with it. I wanted to ask your opinion on the programm (I know its kind of a silly question) and how you see it useable for vfx. I so far only used it for short animations fun personal projects and architectural renderings, which in my humble opinions . But I found it rather difficult for vfx, as I couldn't find a proper or really useful way to exchange tracking data and other things with other software(Fusion, After Effects, Mocha). I now the software is only a tool, but I kinda fell in love with it (instead of Maya for example) and it is free/open source which really helps when looking at the subscription prices of other software. Thank you in advance. Greetings from Austria
Hi, idk if you are till reading this comment section but I'm interested in vfx. I know absolutely nothing about vfx. I always find myself reacting and watching corridor crew. Everytime I watch a movie I love the effects and the animations of the movie. I don't know what I want to do but I would like to be able to create animations of characters etc. Im currently studying computer science but I really don't like this at all, I only took it because I thought I had a possibility to start working in game development/animation. I just want to be able to create an animation even if its really janky but Idk how to get started.
Hi allan mckay, my age is 28 and as am working as a technical illustrator in Lionbrige technologoes inc.i want to learn and i want change carrer to visual effects so please guide me for that whats the steps i want to take?

Hey Allan, what role does coding play in vfx industry, will that be an additional advantage for a person to get a job? being programmer will be limited to just backend software developer in this industry?
Is it easy to find a job (or distant outsource job) in California in VFX if I know 3ds Max well, some plugins for it and can do character animation in maya? If it is real, how to start looking for a job and where to send the showreel?
I watched your other tyflow tutorial I stopped when I noticed u using 3dmax now that you say we can start even from blender it's very cool I will continue.. Question how do I bring in tyflow I downloaded into blender.?
HELLO I AM YASH PATEL. I AM VFX STUDENT AND WANT TO BECOME COMPOSITOR. I KNOW BASICS IN ROTO, KEYING AND COMP. TO BECOME COMPOSITOR WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED,AND HOW TO GET INTO INDUSTRY AND FROM WHICH ROLE I CAN ENTER STUDIOS.WHAT I HAVE TO DO FOR THAT DOES IT REQUIRED ANY COURSE OR DEGREE OR SHOWREEL.
I love fusion But if you want to get work, 100x more nuke jobs over fusion But it isn't much work to learn one over the other I was 100% fusion until I went to ILM then I made the switch there I'm really good friends with the black magic guys but I only use fusion for a few automation tasks at home that I need since I don't want to pay for a nuke license
Even with a goal and free Internet content your biggest problem with self-education will be structuring the path from A to Z. Because "you don't know what you don't know" figuring out strategies like fuzzy bisecting to fill in gaps is invaluable. On the way to "Z" what is "M"? "F"? "C"? "B"?
Do I need to learn programming if I want to become a 3d asset designer in game industry because So many companies need a designer who possess the knowledge of programming ?
You can get by without programming and definitely for 3d assets you do not need to code I feel there's lots of benefits to learning to code But don't let it be a wall to stop you There are lots of people who put a lot of focus on thinking they need to code or draw and realize later they spent a lot of time on something that they never once got to use in their actual job So if you care about assets focus on modeling and texturing the most Since that's what your day to day will be focusing on
Definitely Bigger studios usually have more hands on a certain shot and that's typically where things can become quite segmented, but even at industrial light and magic I would be doing all my own shots and usually at smaller studios you're expected to be able to do all of this. I think it's important to at least have that responsibility at some point in your career because it will help you be a better artist even if later you intend to focus on one area. So you definitely can create all of your own shots and be responsible for everything
sub spanish! please haha

Thanks Sankhadeep let me know if you have any questions
Awesome Allan great video! How important would a skill like polygon modeling be for a technical director? I would love if you could elaborate on what kind of core skills should a technical director have. Seeing as now that a vast majority of modeling is done through sculpting software. Thanks again, you are a great inspiration! Love from Mexico!
Which movie u work sir are u do a vfx course only
thank u so so sooo much sir for this video ..!! great respect
Thank you so much it means a lot thank you
Great talk as usual Allan!
In the meantime check out www.allanmckay.com/1/ there's also a few other podcast episodes focused around remote work I made
@@AllanMcKay Amazing! Thank you Allan! I look forward to hear more from you! All the best.
Und wie ist es bei dir weiter gegangen? Grüße aus Wien
Hey Allan, if I want to learn animation, do I need to learn advanced modeling too?
You have a amazing content!!
Thanks so much Guilherme! More stuff coming, I'll be posting a lot this week stay tuned :)

Hey Allan, what role does coding play in vfx industry, will that be an additional advantage for a person to get a job? being programmer will be limited to just backend software developer in this industry?
Thanks a lot...
I feel motivated more than ever now!!❤️🙏🏽
Hope I'd get to meet you someday!✨
Is it easy to find a job (or distant outsource job) in California in VFX if I know 3ds Max well, some plugins for it and can do character animation in maya? If it is real, how to start looking for a job and where to send the showreel?

Thank you so much dude... Greetings from Peru...
Thanks so much buddy! Hope things are going well over there!
what if i want to learn something but its just not available like 3d lightning tutorials
Thank you Allan for brief explaination.
Great, I can't decide between Nuke or Fusion. My heart wants Fusion, but the standard is Nuke.
Should I follow my heart or companies?
I love fusion
But if you want to get work, 100x more nuke jobs over fusion
But it isn't much work to learn one over the other
I was 100% fusion until I went to ILM then I made the switch there
I'm really good friends with the black magic guys but I only use fusion for a few automation tasks at home that I need since I don't want to pay for a nuke license
Thanks sir
.Love from India
Thanks you sir, more information.. 😀😀 !!
You can get by without programming and definitely for 3d assets you do not need to code
I feel there's lots of benefits to learning to code
But don't let it be a wall to stop you
There are lots of people who put a lot of focus on thinking they need to code or draw and realize later they spent a lot of time on something that they never once got to use in their actual job
So if you care about assets focus on modeling and texturing the most
Since that's what your day to day will be focusing on
@@AllanMcKay Oh thank you for the advice, I will keep it in mind
What is the difference between CGI and VFX
Thank u a lot!
You're welcome Yana!
Hi i am a professional graphic designer good at photoshop aparr frim that i wanted to lear vfx from the basic so can u help me
i wanna go to fx deep in destruction plz suggest me how to i apply this department
I have procrastinated for too long even if it its means that I can't walk or run, I will crawl to get there
I love it - you can do this. Whatever it takes
but how long does it take to become a vfx artist
5 year's
hey Allan......I was wondering...Can a one talented vfx artist do a one massive vfx shot ?
Definitely
Bigger studios usually have more hands on a certain shot and that's typically where things can become quite segmented, but even at industrial light and magic I would be doing all my own shots
and usually at smaller studios you're expected to be able to do all of this. I think it's important to at least have that responsibility at some point in your career because it will help you be a better artist even if later you intend to focus on one area.
So you definitely can create all of your own shots and be responsible for everything
